This flag does not represent me. A flag picked by a private club, without input from the community as a whole or even in part, is not representative of trans people in any way. This is shameful and offensive. Why has the City of Toronto allowed this flag ?

That the Toronto Trans Alliance went ahead and booked with the protocol office and laid the groundwork for yesterday’s flag raising says volumes about the disorganization and mistrust within our own trans community. Don’t like the flag raised? Go to the protocol office at city hall and book Nov 20, 2015, and do the work to organize a TDoR flag raising yourself. In other words, stop complaining and get off your arses and get organized. While the flag wasn’t my choice, I took the time and effort to attend the meetings and vote on the flag choices. Trinity Western In Canada, there is not a “religious” version of the law. There is merely law [“BC Government Considering Revoking TWU Approval,” dailyxtra.com, Nov 19]. If this school wants to unleash so-called professionals upon the public who cherry pick what is right and wrong based upon so-called holy texts, then Canada is truly wading in deep waters about church and state. That’s not the trans flag [“Trans Flag Flies for First Time at Toronto City Hall,” dailyxtra.com, Nov 20]. That’s the Toronto Trans Alliance’s flag representing their own private Facebook group. They appropriated TDoR to get attention for themselves and excluded marginalized people from taking part. Make no mistake: Ms Chaudhary’s protest was against TTA’s racist organizing practices and their inappropriate flag unveiling. It was not, in any way, a protest of the actual Trans Day of Remembrance itself.

Anger is a powerful emotion that those of us who work in the HIV/AIDS movement have long channelled into our advocacy work. Die-ins, protests, lobbying, voting, fundraisers, letter-writing campaigns, self-made and -distributed public service announcements: we used whatever tools we had at our disposal to fight our government and healthcare providers for our right to stay alive. With HIV/AIDS causing fatigue, pneumonia, Kaposi’s sarcoma and other debilitating opportunistic infections, sometimes all we had was our rage to fuel us. Sustaining oneself on anger, however, creates short- and long-term health problems, including heart disease and the weakening of the immune system. Did our anger sometimes contribute to our own deaths? With the advent of AZT and then HAART, life expectancy for those living with HIV/ AIDS began to increase in Canada, and in 1996, the number of deaths from AIDS began to fall significantly. In 2011, an estimated 71,300 Canadians were living and thriving with HIV. Our previous battles and hardwon victories began to be mined to produce nostalgic entertainment and win Oscars. Average Canadian citizens understood and retroactively supported our past fury at our political and religious leaders. Now, with advances in treatment and harm reduction, many feel that anyone testing positive for HIV is fortunate to be infected at a time when potential cures, vaccines, drug trials and scientific discoveries are being reported in the news. With time healing old wounds and modern medicine ensuring our survival, could we finally let go of the anger that has characterized our struggle and worn on us so heavily? The answer is no, and the reason we’re asking this question is because the general public once again believes we’re not entitled to be angry. Now, like then, the perception is that the situation is under control and our best interests are being met by our leaders. The old adage — “the more things change, the more things stay the same” — rings true. Since we are no longer dying at the rates we once were, some feel the threat of HIV has been neutered.

But that ignores that infection rates have been climbing steadily since the creation of protease inhibitors, affecting healthcare costs and our quality of life and giving rise to the criminalization of HIV transmission. At this point, being angry and having HIV are so synonymous that anger may as well be listed in medical text books as a side effect of being positive. Advocates’ grievances concerning HIV in Canada today are too numerous to mention, but there are a few that stand out. Like the cancellation of Correctional Service Canada’s safer-tattooing pilot project, which had to prevent only four HIV or hepatitis C infections a year to pay for itself. Or the Harper government’s vote against Bill C-398 in 2012, leaving Canada’s Access to Medicines Regime broken and many developing countries without access to lifesaving HIV/ AIDS medication. In an opinion piece for The Globe and Mail, academic Gerald Caplan wondered if our prime minister could be found guilty of murder as a result by the International Court of Justice. Recently, pharmaceutical companies Janssen and Gilead developed a 90-percenteffective hepatitis C cure, then priced it out of range of most Canadians, with many private plans (as well as the Ontario Drug Benefit) refusing to cover it. (About one quarter of HIV-infected people in the United States are also infected with the hepatitis C virus.) Fighting continuously is exhausting, but since the start of the epidemic, HIVpositive queer men and their allies have used their anger as fuel in their battles to effect change. Anger may indeed cost us, physically and emotionally, but it’s our anger that has gotten us where we are today. If World AIDS Day serves a purpose, it’s to remind the general public that our anger is justified. Perhaps one day, when we have finally found a cure for HIV, we can learn how to exact social justice and be caregivers without relying on such a base human emotion. Until that day, don’t try to tell us we’re not entitled to be angry, because some days it’s only our anger that keeps us moving in the right direction.

The three grounds used by these three parents needs to fail on three grounds: 1) The petition assumes that trans persons are automatically immoral. In fact, being trans, like being lesbian, gay or bisexual, is morally neutral. Of course LGBT people may engage in behaviours that are moral or immoral, but being LGBT is neither moral nor immoral. 2) While the privacy of all persons in a washroom must be protected, this can be done if washrooms are properly constructed. I have been in washrooms in Scandinavia that are used by both men and women and had far more privacy than we have in our single-sex washrooms. 3) While parents normally do have a right to be informed on the behaviour of their children, there are times when the right to privacy and confidentiality of a child or adolescent must come first. Certainly a student who has good reasons to fear a negative reaction from parents concerning her/ his sexual orientation or gender identity needs to have privacy and confidentiality rights respected and protected. Schools’ and school boards’ first responsibility is to protect students. The rights (real or perceived) of others must come second behind the rights of students.

Trans flag raised at city hall Historic ceremony proceeds amidst tension, a protest and severe cold ACTIVISM HG WATSON

Voices from Toronto’s trans community thundered across Nathan Phillips Square during a historic — if fraught — ceremony on Nov 20. On the Transgender Day of Remembrance, for the first time ever a trans flag was raised in an official ceremony on the roof of Toronto City Hall. Approximately 100 people withstood below-freezing temperatures to attend, including mayor-elect John Tory; councillor-elect Joe Cressy; councillors Janet Davis, Sarah Doucette, Joe Mihevc and Ceta Ramkhalawansingh; former mayor Barbara Hall; and former mayoral candidate George Smitherman. But there was tension in the air even before the ceremony started. Amidst reports of a planned protest of the event, members of the organizing group, the Toronto Trans Alliance (TTA), alleged that the flag they had brought had been stolen from the flagpole. “I don’t know anything for sure” about who took the flag, said Rocky Clark, a member of the TTA’s steering committee who said he was aware there had been a protest planned by another group of trans activists. Huddled nearby inside city hall with several other activists, Abuzar Chaudhary, the organizer of the protest, said she hadn’t heard that the flag had been stolen. Throughout most of the ceremony, Chaudhary and four other protesters marched behind the speakers holding signs stating that the TTA silences trans women of colour. At the end of the ceremony, after a second flag was procured to be raised on the flagpole, Chaudhary clashed with a member of the audience who objected to her speaking during the accompanying moment of silence by standing in front of Chaudhary. The confrontation came to a head when Chaudhary placed her sign in front of the person standing in front of her. Though one person called for security and police were nearby, the dispute ended peacefully. Chaudhary feels that the TTA’s event did not properly represent the entire trans community. Before the ceremony, she and a group of activists raised concerns about scheduling two cisgender

people — Barbara Hall, the chief commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission, and Cheri DiNovo, the NDP MPP for Parkdale–High Park — to speak at an event meant to remember deceased transgender people. “A lot of the violence is racialized violence, so it disproportionately affects trans women of colour,” Chaudhary says. In a letter sent to Hall, DiNovo and Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, the activists wrote that they believe the voices of trans women of colour should be front and centre at TDoR ceremonies. TTA steering committee member Boyd Kodak says that the TTA had considered whether it was appropriate to include cisgender speakers but through consultation decided that it was important to have politicians address the community at the event. “The group felt as long as we had at least 80 percent of the program being trans run . . . then that was sufficient,” he says. “And indeed, they did want to hear from some of these prominent dignitaries.” In the end, Cheri DiNovo did

not attend; Andrea Houston spoke on her behalf. Some of the controversy stemmed from the flag that was chosen to be raised at the event. The TTA held a vote to decide which flag would be used. “There are some people that felt that the flags didn’t properly define them any longer,” Kodak says, noting that people who have non-binary identities don’t feel represented by the most wellknown flag. A newly created kaleidoscope-coloured flag was chosen over the international trans flag and several other designs in a poll posted to TTA’s closed Facebook group and at various locations throughout Toronto. Kodak says the decision was a majority consensus. The activists, however, allege that voting in a closed Facebook group doesn’t reflect legitimate community consultations. “It’s basically a TTA flag; it’s not really a trans flag,” Chaudhary says. “Because the trans community has never agreed that this would be a wider symbol that represents all of us.” Chaudhary says she is happy with how the city

hall protest went. “Unfortunately, I would have at least liked it if the TTA had acknowledged there is a problem and that they need to work towards a resolution with the community,” she adds. Kodak says that despite being disappointed about the scuffle and the interruption, which he blames on the missing flag, he is happy with how the ceremony went, even if it was “a little long and cold.” Representatives from the trans community shared personal stories and spoke about the importance of acknowledging the Transgender Day of Remembrance. One speaker, Rubert Raj, reminded attendees of the barriers transgender people face, while Shadmith Manzo, who immigrated to Canada from Mexico, said that the intention is to continue to push forward the transgender movement. Several speakers called on attendees to encourage senators to vote for the passing of Bill C-279, the transgender rights bill, which is now before a Senate committee.

Papasotiriou recharged for murder Attorney general overrules preliminary judge’s decision in Lanteigne case CRIME HG WATSON

After being discharged once on a homicide charge, Demitry Papasotiriou will face the judgment of the court after all. Ontario Attorney General Madeleine Meilleur decided to indict Papasotiriou directly in late October, according to the Toronto Sun. On Sept 11, Justice Shaun Nakatsuru had discharged Papasotiriou citing lack of evidence. Papasotirou was arrested originally on Nov 2, 2012, more than a year after the body of his husband, Allan Lanteigne, was found at Lanteigne’s home in Toronto’s west end. The Canadian Criminal Code allows

provinces’ attorneys general to sign discretionary orders superseding judges’ decisions in preliminary hearings. Papasotiriou’s lawyer, James Lockyer, says he is disappointed with the decision. “I was not happy that the attorney general preferred an indictment,” he says. “It seems to me that rather than bypass the courts she should have waited for the courts to review the decision of Justice Nakatsuru.” According to Lockyer, these kinds of indictments don’t happen often. He says he was also not given an opportunity to argue against the indictment, which he says is the usual course of action. Jason Gennaro, a spokesman for the Ministry of the Attorney General,

Church Wellesley BIA considers expansion After reporting a successful year, the Church Wellesley Village Business Improvement Association is eyeing an expansion that could see the organization push up against Yonge Street. At the BIA’s annual general meeting, at the 519 Church Street Community Centre, chair Avery Pitcher, Michael MacDonell, Stephanie McCracken and George Pratt showed a map of the proposed new boundaries. Though it will be some time before an official boundary change takes place, board members believe there is enough interest in it from nearby businesses to make it happen. The expansion would come on the heels of a good year for the BIA. The organization reported a $145,102 operating surplus in 2013, exceeding the budgeted projection by more than $25,000, thanks to a significant increase in sponsorship

funds. The BIA did spend more money on promotions and events, including making Church Street pedestrian-only on the weekend before Pride, an initiative that cost just over $51,000. According to BIA staff, that weekend is usually quiet, so the street closure drew more people to Church Street. In 2015, Church Street will close for a number of weekends, including during the Pan Am Games. The games’ Pride House will be located on Church, and a

total of $60,000 — including a $30,000 grant from the City of Toronto — will go toward streetscape improvements for the event. Pitcher said the BIA will also try to address the concerns of businesses that might be affected by the street closure. tells Xtra that the ministry does not comment on requests for direct indictments in specific cases. At the time of the alleged murder, Papasotiriou was studying law in Switzerland. Another man — Mladen Ivezic, also known as Michael — was charged and extradited from Greece in 2013. At the time, police alleged the two were co-conspirators in the case. Other details of this case are subject to a publication ban. Both men were scheduled to appear at the Ontario Superior Court Nov 17, but Ivezic did not appear. A letter provided to the court said he had to go to Scarborough General Hospital for mental health reasons, but his lawyer, Susan Jane von Achten, said that she understood he was in hospital for a hernia surgery. After appearing before the court, von Achten told Xtra that she believes her client “barely scraped the Sheppard Test” in the preliminary inquiry, referring to the legal test that determines whether there is enough evidence for a jury to convict on. Papasotiriou, who was released on bail after being recharged, arrived at court Nov 17 in a knee-length fur jacket and wide-brimmed fedora. He declined to comment for this story.

Aaron Glynwilliams, who works as part of the 2015 Pan Am Games public affairs team, is a returning member to the board. Alica Hall, who was elected to the board at the AGM on Oct 30, works as a communications officer for United Way Toronto. Former co-chair Shelley Craig will continue to sit on the board as a member. “We’re grateful to Shelley for her dedication and commitment to the organization as co-chair and look forward to continue working with her in our new roles,” Glynwilliams said in a statement. Former co-chair Sean Hillier left the board in the fall to pursue his PhD. Chris Tremeer was reelected as treasurer, and Paul Saguil was reelected as secretary. HISTORY BOYS MICHAEL LYONS

I’m not going to beat around the bush. I despise the Catholic Church. Don’t get me wrong: I don’t care for most organized religion. But to me, Catholicism represents the worst of what religion can be: preaching virtues of humility from a golden palace, claiming to spread love while treating women as second-class citizens, denying queer people rights and actively covering up child sexual abuse. With my fiery anti-Catholicism, I probably would have hit it off with 17th-century Mexican poet and intellectual Sister Juana Inés de la Cruz. Born in a village southeast of Mexico City, she was baptized in early December 1648 as a “daughter of the church.” Despite being the illegitimate daughter of a Spanish captain and an illiterate Criollo woman, Inés’s mother made sure her children all learned to read as early as possible. When she was about six or seven, Inés begged her mother to dress her like a boy so she could go to school in Mexico City, but her request wasn’t taken seriously. In a way, though, she later got her wish. She eventually was sent to Mexico City to live with her wealthy aunt and uncle and became something of a local oddity: an expansively intellectual teenaged girl was as common as a snow drift in the desert. She could not attend university, as women were barred from higher education, but through her own notoriety, familial connections and beauty — in paintings she’s depicted as petite, dark eyed, impudent and fine-featured — she joined the court of “New Spain,” a fantastic educational opportunity. When she was about 16, she was a favourite lady-in-waiting of a Mexican noblewoman. In 1669, Inés joined the Mexico City convent of San Jerónimo, a drastic change from court but essential to her intellectual survival. She wrote, “I took the veil because, though I knew I would find in religious life many things that would be repugnant to my character . . . it would, given my total opposition to marriage, be the least unfitting and most decent state I could choose, with regard to the assurance I wished for my salvation.” Hence, Inés became

Pride of ownership During her time in the convent, Sor Juana wrote the bulk of her work, which included a number of passionate, erotic poems to important women in her life. SISSYDUDE

Sor (Spanish for “Sister”) Juana, and she would spend the rest of her life in the convent. We presume a nun would lead an ascetic life, but Sor Juana lived quite comfortably in a two-storey apartment chock-full of books. During her time in the convent she wrote the bulk of her work, which included a number of passionate, erotic poems to important women in her life. In a piece that begins “Perdite, señora” — something like “My lost lady” in English — Sor Juana apologizes to a woman she loves for not writing, saying she knows her love is wrong: “And, although loving your beauty/ is a crime beyond repair,/ rather the crime be chastised/ than my fervour cease to dare.” Along with a talent for the erotic and the transcendental, Sor Juana’s poetry had a secular and satirical bent. One riotous poem charges men with “not seeing you’re alone to blame/ for faults you plant in woman’s mind.” Her work had a feminist leaning long before any organized movement, and this got her noticed, not always in a good way.

‘...Thanks Banks...’

After she wrote a criticism of a popular old sermon that was then published by an antagonistic bishop, she was criticized harshly and relentlessly by the church. She was forced to defend herself as a learned woman in “La Respuesta” (“The Response”), an intellectual masterpiece considered largely autobiographical. Eventually, she was forced to sell all her books and scientific equipment — she gave the money to the poor — and do what the patriarchal church wanted her to do all along: take her place as a woman, and nothing more. I was raised Catholic, and I like to think my tendency toward zealous antiCatholicism is so strong because I was able to get out. Since then, I’ve always wanted people to dream beyond the four walls of the church. I think that’s why I see such a kindred spirit in Sor Juana, who, as a polite “fuck you” to the Catholic Church, I am naming patron saint of intellects and feminists. Evil stepmother From the sublime to the offensive, Disney films are rife with gay characters. The Little Mermaid’s brassy sea witch, Ursula, is based on the drag queen Divine. The eyelashes of the genie from Aladdin put RuPaul to shame. And the effeminacy of The Lion King’s Scar is overshadowed only by Timon and Pumbaa’s flamboyant affair. So it’s no surprise there’s so much drag in Ross Petty Productions’ upcoming holiday show, Cinderella: The Gags to Riches Family Musical. Each year Ross Petty Productions puts on a pantomime for the holidays; they take a simple, classic tale, such as Snow White or The Little Mermaid, alter the story a bit and add jokes and some modern songs whose lyrics fit with the tale. “It becomes ridiculous and funny. Usually a panto has a message it’s trying to convey,” says Nicko Giannakos, who’s performing in the holiday production for the first time this year. “In this show, Cinderella runs an organic food market and wants to go to the ball to spread a message about kids eating healthier foods.” As well as being a member of the ensemble, Giannakos is Ross Petty’s understudy. If some ill should befall Petty — and nobody’s pointing fingers here (Psst! Giannakos did it!) — Giannakos will get on his dress, wig and scowl and play the audience-taunting evil stepmother. “There’s kind of a tradition of this. For instance, in the ballet version of Cinderella, the roles of the ugly stepsisters and

stepmother are usually played by men,” Giannakos says. “They’re meant to be hideous, and it’s easier to make an ugly woman out of a man. I can tell you right now that I make an ugly woman.” Giannakos most enjoys Dan Chameroy’s character, Plumbum, who recurs in Ross Petty shows. “Plumbum is playing the Fairy Godmother. She’s a really crazy drag queen, with makeup all over her face, and she’s hysterically funny,” he says. “Dan often [ad libs], and we’re laughing onstage as much as the audience when he says these crazy things.” — Jeremy Willard Cinderella: The Gags to Riches Family Musical runs Thurs, Nov 27–Sun, Jan 4, various showtimes, at the Elgin Theatre, 189 Yonge St. rosspetty.com Dan Chameroy and Ross Petty BRUCE ZINGER

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE AT PAUL PETRO Holy shit! The time of year to indulge your consumerist whims at their sparkliest is just around the corner. When it comes to stuffing the socks of your loved ones, you can always make that dreaded trek to the Eaton Centre. But if you’re seeking a less painful experience and want to support some Canadian artists in the process, Christmas Spice is the place to be. Now in its 18th year, Paul Petro’s event has a cheeky “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” appeal. But the holiday art sale takes a more MORE AT DAILYXTRA.COM

critical approach to the capitalist hijacking of the birth of our lord and saviour. Created by more than two dozen artists, many of the works on offer put a quirky spin on materialism and consumerism. And though there are some more expensive items, gallery-goers can walk away with original art for less than $5. This year’s offerings include

Andrew Harwood’s day-glo pipe-cleaner pentagrams, Stephen Andrews’s smalledition Butterfly Effect ink-jet prints, Amy Bowles’s terra cotta twig stars, Carol Wainio’s tiny paintings of Home Depot–style reindeer lawn ornaments, a delightful series of unglazed porcelain cum-rag hooks by Maura Doyle, temporary tattoos by quirky collective Fastwürms, and a series of photographs of bedside Vaseline jars by gallery regular Keith Cole. The event’s opening party also marks an unofficial start to the holiday season on Queen West. Things of-

ten get a little crazy, but that should be no surprise. In addition to his photographs, Cole does double duty as host and security guard. “Keith takes his job very seriously, and we have the written transcripts to prove it,” Petro says. “In terms of the work, there’s always an air of anticipation to see what everyone’s come up with each year. And the bonfire out back is always popular.” — Chris Dupuis The Christmas Spice opening is Fri, Nov 28; the show runs until Sat, Dec 20 at Paul Petro Contemporary Art, 980 Queen St W. paulpetro.com

Kevin Vidal and his boyfriend recently attended a performance by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. As Vidal craned his neck, taking in the huge crowd at Roy Thomson Hall, his boyfriend teased him: “You need to get used to this. You’re going to be performing here.” Vidal is in an upcoming show called Symphony. The Second City Guide to the Symphony It’ll be an entertaining blend of the dour and the silly; while the TSO plays bits of Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Strauss, comedian Colin Mochrie and some miscreants from The Second City will perform comedy sketches on all things symphony, from the pomposity of regular symphony-goers to the sexual prowess of a woodwind virtuoso. There will also be original music by Second City’s musical director, Matthew Reid. Vidal has performed in musical Kevin Vidal theatre and in two mainstage shows at Second City but never in front of a Roy Thomson Hall–sized crowd. “It’s a huge, huge audience,” he says. “And the music is some of the hardest I’ve ever had to learn. It’s a big challenge.” It’s been a momentous year for the 25-year-old actor and comedian. In October, he finished shooting the first series of a new sketch comedy TV show, called Sunnyside, which will premiere early in 2015 on Rogers City. It’s his first time in a TV series. “In the way that Portlandia takes place in Portland, this takes place only in one mystical sort of neighbourhood in Toronto,” he says. “I play at least eight different characters, and they’re all pretty out there.” It’s an exciting time, not least of all because of the mystery of what comes next. “There’s the symphony gig and the show airs, but I don’t know what’s happening in the new year. Next year is the first year of my life that nothing is planned,” Vidal says, “but I guess I’ll audition for things and hope that people want me.” — Jeremy Willard The Second City Guide to the Symphony is Sat, Nov 29, 7:30pm, and Sun, Nov 30, 3pm, at Roy Thomson Hall, 60 Simcoe St. tso.ca XTRA! Cocktail name The Log Lady

Cocktail name Frost Bite

Cocktail name The Cure

Ingredients Wild Turkey rye Apple cider Lemon juice Winter syrup (cinnamon, clove, ginger, black pepper) One egg white Garnish with a cinnamon stick (the log)

Ingredients Absolut Vanilia Malibu coconut rum Blue Curaçao Pineapple juice Eggnog Rim with coconut flakes Garnish with a rosemary twig and three sugar-dusted cranberries on a stir stick

Ingredients Fresh cold-pressed juice: beetroot, granny smith apple, lemon and ginger Tarragon Shrub wildflower honey White chestnut Bach floral remedy Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur Victoria gin

Inspiration A take on the tropical-style cocktails you’d have at a beach resort. Eggnog gives it a seasonal twist while avoiding the “go to” candy-cane peppermint flavour. The sugar-dusted cranberries with the rosemary twig is a visually satisfying holiday treat.

Inspiration This drink gives a euphoric feeling of well-being and calm: the gin gives you a warm sensation, while the beet cleans your blood and gives you stamina for the night to come.

Inspiration This drink is inspired by a character from Twin Peaks, which I was watching with friends while drinking cocktails. This is a quote from the Log Lady herself: “Behind all things are reasons. Reasons can never explain the absurd.”

a book of poetry held up by author Alex Leslie at a poetry reading/launch that Type Books held for the Vancouver native. On the right is Sarah and left is Prathna, who also took part in reading portions of Alex’s book, The Things I Heard About You. It’s not dead, people — poetry is alive and well, living and breathing on Queen West. 2 Hywel and Lorna were just two of the attendees at Type’s event, The Effect of Texture, which took place in their store on Queen West. It’s all about the sweaterand-glasses combo that Lorna is rocking. I am so in love with Canadiana, especially when we do it well, and it seems we nail this look as soon as winter rolls her little head around. Ooh, I can taste the oversized cup of tea that goes with the sweater and a book of poetry just thinking about it. 3 Who would have known that a little party in tribute to Romy and Michele would be going strong after five years? Business Woman’s Special was another smash hit at Round Venue in Kensington. The beauty in this event is that it’s a real mixed bag: there are babes in boyland like Andrew and Fabio here and plenty of ladies to mack on, too. 4 I love, love, love this photo of Barbora from BWS. She was dancing around in next to nothing all night, but this picture really captures the classy side of the whole look. 5 How do I even begin to talk about Fay Slift’s outfit at BWS? She’s always got the best Texas-cheerleader hair and the most glitter, but the sides of that dress/shirt/caftan

were completely gone, and Ms Slift had on nary an undergarment. I swoon for her like my very own bearded Dolly Parton almost every time. There is just something so classic about Fay, even with the craft (as mentioned: I love the craft). 6 Finally, a BWS family pic to finish it off, from left to right: photog Kimon Kaketsis, DJs Diego Armand and Nino Brown, organizers and belles of the ball Mike Yerxa and April Wozny, and DJ Sammy Royal from Yes Yes Y’all. This one really captures an era. It’s good enough to frame. These are the kind of babes that have their shit so together they probably invented Post-its. 7 The always-dashing Judy Virago as Elsa Mars is a nice juxtaposition against Igby Lizzard as the glitter-bearded lady at Queerican Horror Story at The Beaver. The whole thing was a tribute to American Horror Story’s current season, Freakshow. All I really care about is craft drag. When you start drawing lines on your face and gluing glitter to your beard but still somehow rock your grandma’s church hat, then you are in, in, in, in my books. That’s the drag that is closest to my heart. 8 Jess and Allysin Chaynes got super cozy at Queerican Horror Story at The Beaver. Maha had this to say about Jess: “When you close your eyes and hear her, she sounds just like Courtney Love, and when you open your eyes — just like Courtney Love.” It’s almost too much to think Courtney Love plus that purple beard and excellent cleavage Allysin is pressing up. Almost.

“All the amazing people I get to meet and the awesome times I get to be a part of,” are two of the reasons Zsombor enjoys working as a model and dancer. Zsombor’s favourite drink is a glass of zinfandel; his favourite way to relax is a walk with Ziggy, his huge Labradane dog; and his favourite haunt is The Geraldine in Parkdale. He prefers boxer briefs, “or my Elmo thong if I’m feeling frisky.” And when it comes to frisky, the Oakville local is into “biting, scratching, hair pulling — the usual.” Zealous and indefatigable, Zsombor lives by his favourite quote: “The higher you climb, the farther you can see.” Instagram: iamzsombor | Twitter: iamzsombor To comment on or become an Xtra Hot guy or gal, email Drasko at xtrahot@dailyxtra.com.
