The Yorkshire Air Ambulance is an independent charity providing a lifesaving rapid response emergency service to 5 million people across Yorkshire. We fly 7 days a week, 365 days a year, covering a vast landscape that not only includes major cities and motorways, but also rural and isolated locations.
YAA is an independent Charity needing to raise £12,000 per day to keep both of Yorkshire’s air ambulances in the air and maintained. This is equivalent to £4.4 million each year.
We operate 2 helicopters, G-YOAA and G-YAAC. They operate from Nostell Priory, near Wakefield and RAF Topcliffe, near Thirsk. The service is operational 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
We currently fly over 1,200 missions a year, an average of 3 incidents every single day. Patients are transferred to the nearest major trauma centre, flying at speeds of up to 160 mph.
If every adult in Yorkshire donated just £1 per annum, this would cover the yearly cost of keeping the air ambulances maintained and in the air. To find out how you can donate to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, please visit www.yaa.org.uk
WELCOME TO THE ILKLEY CARNIVAL Welcome to the 2017 Ilkley Carnival ‘At the Movies’. The programme cover features Ava Jones’ stunning Cover Competition design, the winner of our annual competition. Her design has been printed onto 5,400 bags thanks to our new main sponsor, Tesco Ilkley, and these will be handed out for free today. In addition, Tesco Ilkley are also providing a cookery workshop for Ava and her friends. Tesco Ilkley’s sponsorship is warmly welcomed and we hope it will be the start of a long-standing relationship. Today wouldn’t be possible without support from local businesses and organisations so thank you to all. You can find details of all our sponsors within this programme and on our website, we ask that you support those that make Ilkley Carnival happen. We are also extremely grateful to the 150+ volunteers who give up their bank holiday to assist. Thank you for ensuring that Ilkley Carnival is an event by the community, for the community. We have some fantastic entertainment lined up today including our headline act, the Vander Wheel of Death who are one of the best acts of their kind in the UK. There is also lots of free entertainment for children including the Westville House craft tent and the storytelling corner performed by Ilkley Literature Festival representatives. Another new addition to the carnival showground is the Tesco cookery workshop where children can make healthy pizzas and edible slime. We promised the biggest carnival yet and further expansion across Denton Road has certainly secured this. Don’t forget to wander across Denton Road to the classic car show, Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Black Hats v White Hats cricket match. Today is about raising money for local good causes and we’re delighted that the primary beneficiary this year is the Junior Ilkley Harriers. We have some wonderful sports facilities in Ilkley but there is huge demand for athletics training. The money Ilkley Carnival donates to the Junior Ilkley Harriers will cover only a fraction of what is required but it will go a long way to benefit our local community who are currently travelling to Halifax and beyond for training. Last but not least, we’re extremely fortunate to have such dedicated and enthusiastic schools and organisations in our community that spend weeks making costumes to ensure that the parade is the best within the district. On behalf of the carnival committee, I thank you for transforming Ilkley into a wonderful spectacle. I hope the weather is kinder than last year but it is indicative of how much our community loves the carnival that the downpour of 2016 didn’t dampen the smiles on the children’s faces. Have a great day! Andrew Stacey Chairman, Ilkley Carnival

ABOUT OUR MAIN SPONSOR The Tesco store in Ilkley is based on Springs Lane, a stone’s throw away from Ilkley train station. The store has been a feature of the local community for many years with a wide range on offer for local residents. In support of this year’s carnival the Tesco store will be providing an onsite foodie workshop and have also printed Ava Jones’ winning ‘At the Movies’ design onto limited edition hessian bags, which can be found with Tesco colleagues around the Carnival and at the store throughout the May Day celebrations. Store manager, Sarita Prashar, said: “The store team are absolutely delighted to be supporting this year’s Ilkley Carnival and cannot wait to see the fantastic creations for the annual parade. Whilst we are dedicated and focused on serving our customers and enhancing their shopping experience in our store, we are also keen to engage with and help to support our local community.” “At the store we offer The Bags of Help scheme which helps to fund local projects for the community through the 5p carrier bag charge. We are always looking for groups who may need some support to purchase new equipment, train coaches or volunteers, improve community buildings or run community events. It is then our customers who decide which project or group receives the funding by voting with the blue tokens that are handed out at checkout.” The store is committed to educating local children about healthy food choices, so Tesco Ilkley will be providing a foodie workshop at today’s carnival. Children will have the opportunity to make healthy pizzas or edible slime! Parents are also welcome to grab recipe cards from the workshop to have a go at home. The Ilkley store runs a number of other community initiatives including the Community Food Connection, where surplus food direct from the store is delivered to local charities for free. As well as Farm to Fork and Food Connection, where schools can take part in trail activities that takes place in-store. Further information can be found at www.eathappyproject.com. If you would like more information about the Ilkley community initiatives please speak to one of the Tesco colleagues in-store. Sarita added: “We’re always looking for ways to get involved with local community initiatives and we’d like to encourage any community groups who are looking for support to come and chat with us in-store.” “Lastly, we hope that this year’s carnival is a big success and that everybody has lots of fun. We’re sure that this year will be the best year yet!”
CREATIVE COMPETITION WINNER An inspired ‘At the Movies’ themed picture scooped first prize in our competition to create the cover of the Ilkley Carnival programme. Ava Jones (9) from Ghyll Royd School, was the winner of the competition following an impressive collection of entries from local schools and independent submissions. Ava said: “I'm so happy that my whole class gets to enjoy the prize of a workshop with the Junior Chef’s Academy and I can't believe that so many bags will have my design on. I really enjoy colouring and drawing so winning the competition is a real confidence booster!” Other highly commended entries were Lotte-Rose O’Keefe and Ghyll Royd pupils Evelyn Connor and Bea Horsley who will each receive Bettys goody bags and certificates in front of thousands of spectators on the carnival presentation stage.

BENEFICIARIES The carnival committee has worked tirelessly to provide another fabulous community event, packed with entertainment and attractions, a great way to raise much needed funds for local groups and organisations. Last year we were able to donate £10,000 to projects ranging from installing flood defences at Ilkley Cricket Club to helping young volunteer and Chemistry Undergraduate Ryan Coones’ self-funded work experience year at the Goddard Space Flight Centre at NASA in Greenbelt, Maryland. In 2016, we were delighted to be able to split the funds between three main beneficiaries and twenty-three other volunteer groups, without whose support we wouldn’t be able to put on such a popular, family event. Following the annual beneficiary process held earlier this year, the committee decided to announce Junior Ilkley Harriers as the 2017 primary beneficiary after the group presented an “exciting project intended to bring ‘real’ athletics facilities to Ilkley for the benefit of the local community”. Ilkley Carnival funds will go towards their ‘Compact Athletics Training Facility’ which will make a difference to athletes of all standards, from total beginners trying the sport for the first time to experienced competitors. For further information have a look at: www.ilkleyathletics.org.uk Again, without the volunteers we wouldn’t be able to run such a large event so if you think you could offer your time, energy, ideas, skills and/or just enthusiasm towards making next year’s Carnival the best yet and help to raise funds for your own project or group please contact me: Mari Hunt, Ilkley Carnival Secretary at carnisec@gmail.com or call Andrew Stacey, Chairman on 07951 890836. You will be welcomed with open arms and be part of a close team working towards providing profits to share between worthwhile causes and a great annual event for the community of Ilkley. It’s hard work, but a lot of fun! Best wishes to all… and have a great day out with us! Mari Hunt, Ilkley Carnival Secretary

BLACK HATS versus
VICTORIAN CRICKET – WITHOUT RULES The most fun you’ll have with your hat on
2017 sees the return of the Black Hats versus White Hats cricket match. If you have come expecting to see a serious game of cricket, this is not the place for you. Ilkley businesses got together over 100 years ago for a light hearted fund raising cricket match which has today evolved into the Ilkley Carnival…but without the cricket. This historic match was played every May Day Bank Holiday Monday from 1880 until the Second World War and then played sporadically until the final match in 1994. In 2016, Ilkley Carnival revived the annual tradition which resulted in a nail‑biting victory for the Black Hats and it’s back and set to be bigger than ever. The match will be held at the Olicanian Cricket Club at 4pm with teams led by local business people Stewart Taylor, owner and managing director of The Black Hat pub and Mike Sansbury of The Grove Bookshop and member of the Ilkley Over Optimists cricket team. A huge thanks to Stewart Taylor, owner and managing director of The Black Hat Pub for sponsoring this historic match and to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance crew for making a guest appearance to get the game off to a flying start.

WHITE HATS WHERE ILKLEY CARNIVAL STARTED The early history of the match We are indebted to the late Fred Cobley who not only recorded the events of the first few years of this unique cricketing fixture, but also noted the highlights of the after dinner speeches which marked the end of each annual match. It would appear, according to Mr. Cobley, that in the late 1870's the Ilkley Cricket Club was, financially, very nearly on its knees. It was decided, therefore, in 1880 to hold a novelty match to coincide with the Ilkley Feast, to raise funds. By 1882 the teams were wearing their distinctive black and white top hats or "tiles". In 1892 the superb cup, which still exists, was purchased by public subscription for annual competition. The carnival connected to the Black Hats White Hats in 1885 when a fancy dress parade was held through the town and is now one of the main attractions of the modern day carnival. So now another series can begin. A new generation of Ilkley traders has grown up determined to preserve the traditions of Old Ilkley, as it still is and hopefully always will be.

PARADE ENTRANTS
Ilkley Carnival’s legendary parade is a truly fantastic kick-start to a fun-filled day! Last year we saw over 1,000 local school children and organisations coming together in an imaginative “Best of British” themed display. This year it’s all about ‘At the Movies’! Expect to see Dalmatians and oompah-loompahs along with trolls, dazzling Oscar performances and a parade of film from black and white to glorious Technicolor. The parade heads along The Grove from 11.00am, down Brook Street and finishing off at the showground on East Holmes field at 11.30am. A big thank you to everyone who helps put on a spectacular show each year and a special mention goes to just some of this year’s carnival legends: All Saints Primary School, Ghyll Royd Pre-School and Nursery, Sacred Heart School, Ben Rhydding Pre-school, Ben Rhydding Primary School, Westville House School, Ashlands Primary School, Ilkley Playhouse, Ilkley Pre-School Playgroup, Outside the Box, White Rose Yorkshire Steampunks, WTA Dance Academy, Moorfield School and Junior Ilkley Harriers.

HELPERS
g c
Ilkley Carnival 2016 was a huge success, not just because we raised such a large amount of money but because we had such an amazing turnout of helpers. Following a request for help to a number of local clubs, groups and charity organisations we had in excess of 160 people helping over the weekend, providing in excess of 300 man hours of assistance. We thank every single person who assists us on the day and the time they volunteer is rewarded with a share of the profits made on the day. Our Primary Beneficiary receives 50% of the profit, the remaining money is distributed to our helpers groups who can achieve a substantial pot of money to utilise on fundraising they are working towards. The groups who assisted us in 2016 were Ilkley Rugby Club, Ben Rhydding Sports Club, Ilkley Soroptomists, Aware, Addingham Scouts, Burley Scouts, 1st and 3rd Ben Rhydding Scouts, Christchurch Cubs, Dans Den, Christchurch, Cookridge Camera Club, Junior Ilkley Harriers, Ilkley Literature Festival, Nasa Project, Ilkley Swimming Club, Ilkley Stroke Club, Westville House School, Ilkley in Bloom, Friends of Martin House, Ilkley Pre School Playgroup, Ilkley Wharfedale Rotary, along with the many other helpers/friends and family, who come back year on year to help. So we thank the 20+ groups who assisted us in 2016 and look forward to seeing you again in 2017 and beyond. Without your support Ilkley Carnival would not exist. ABOUT OUR MAIN BENEFICIARY
Compact Athletics Training Facility All children in Wharfedale should have the opportunity to do the FUNdamental skills of running, jumping and throwing either for fun and fitness or to develop skills further and compete. Junior Ilkley Harriers are looking to raise £245,000 to build a Compact Athletics Training Facility (CATF) on the IGS playing fields to support our junior athletes and offer athletics to the wider community. We want to be able to offer ‘Come & Try it’ athletics sessions and short taster blocks of athletics to Year 2 upwards; run virtual leagues and award schemes and introduce innovative low level competition formats to children. We have strong support from coaches, volunteers and parents and lots of enthusiastic juniors to make this happen. The CATF is L-shaped and wrapped around two sides of Ilkley Town’s proposed 3G football pitch (similar in design to visual above). The southern strip is 15m wide and has an 8 lane all weather 100m running straight leading into a jumps pit. The eastern strip is 17m wide and has provision for all the throws on marked hard standing. The money from this year’s carnival will be specifically used to help fund the shot put area. The grass to the east will double up as a throws landing area and endurance training area. This year we are looking to build a smaller affordable footprint and add the high jump area and building and the throws wall at a later date. Anyone wanting more information or interested in investing or donating towards the project should contact Shirley Wood on 01943 831765 or Shirley@ilkleyharriers.org.uk

ILKLEY CALENDAR
On hearing that Ilkley Chat were not going to produce a calendar for 2017, the Ilkley Carnival committee agreed to take it on. Despite the short notice and with the support of Ilkley Chat we got a good selection of images to choose from, sponsors for each month and great help from local retailers to sell them. We would like to thank everyone that made it possible. The 2017 Calendar made a profit of ÂŁ1,400 which will be added to the Ilkley carnival profits and be distributed to local good causes.
