Beauport Park Golf Club
Welcome Beauport Park Golf Course is a visually stunning 18-hole championship course set in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the heart of the Sussex/Rother Weald between historic Hastings and Battle. The course sets a compelling and stern yet fair challenge whilst you enjoy the views of the glorious East Sussex countryside. Over the years the very well-maintained course has continued to be an extremely popular venue with a wide variety of golfers from beginners to advanced, to societies and, of course, to club members. It has also proven to be a favourite tournament venue, having hosted numerous Pro-Ams and the Sussex Professional Championships. Undulating in nature, one of the best ways to enjoy the course is by hiring one of our buggies. Visit our 14-bay driving range with its two-piece balls and quality mats to limber up before a round or just to work on your game. We also have our own nine-hole short course, which is very useful for those wishing to tidy up their short game. It is also very popular with parents wishing to take their children to their first “little golf course. Hole distances vary from 54 yards to 107 yards in length. Off the course, the facilities are excellent, too. Be sure to visit our comfortable clubhouse where you can relax and enjoy good food freshly prepared by our outstanding catering team.

Golf is at the heart of the Beauport Park experience, but there is so much more to enjoy here at this historic and incredibly picturesque location. You will find us in some of the most beautiful rolling woodland that Sussex has to offer with an abundance of wildlife and some of the finest flora in the country. General Sir James Murray, the former governor-general of Canada, whose estate this was in the 18th century, started the tradition of planting rare and unusual trees here, some of which are such magnificent specimens they are listed in Kew Gardens and are unlikely to be found anywhere else in Sussex. Murray built a country house on the land between 1763 and 1766, calling it Beauport after his summer residence in Quebec. That is how we got our name. Items of historical interest abound from long before that, however. In the 1970s a rare example of a Roman bath house with its walls still standing was discovered between our 12th green and 13th tee. The building was fully excavated and its discovery brought about a visit from the Time Team television programme who conducted an archaeological dig adjacent to the course in 1999. There may not be a bath house here these days, but you can still luxuriate in this unspoilt corner of East Sussex. Golfers wishing to stay overnight have the Bannatyne Spa Hotel Hastings, a magnificently-appointed four-star hotel and health spa retreat, just 200 yards from the clubhouse. Whatever your level of golfing ability, we know you will enjoy the Beauport experience. Come and discover all that we have to offer.

the course Opened in 1972, Beauport Park Golf Course has now matured into a testing 18-hole parkland course. The rolling contours and tight fairways make accuracy and shot selection imperative. The course measures 6,168 yards, par 71 for men off the white championship tees and 5,608 yards, par 73 for ladies. For the men, there is one par 5, the 2nd, on the outward nine and par 3s on the 4th and 6th. Going home, there are short holes on 11 and 16, with the latter welcome relief coming as it does sandwiched between a pair of tough par 5s. We believe there truly is something for everyone at Beauport Park. Yes, it is tight in places and punishes the wayward, but there is the chance for the long hitters to open their shoulders on occasion, as long as they choose those moments wisely. At many other times there are hazards fiendishly placed to catch out errant shots. If Beauport Park is anything, apart from being well maintained, it is a thinking player’s course, rewarding those who exercise the grey matter before pulling the club out of their bag. There is the opportunity for the more skilful golfer to work the ball both ways around dog-legs and be richly rewarded. Some greens are elevated and require a well-positioned high approach to hold the putting surface, others need the approach shot to land short and allow the contours to do the rest. However you get to the putting surface, good putters will relish the opportunity to show their prowess on the true greens.

Arguably the prettiest hole is the 15th, while there are some magnificent views from the 7th tee which is one of the high points on the course. Perhaps the most memorable for other reasons are the 8th and 17th, gargantuan holes across the same two valleys which offer a true test of stamina and golfing talent in equal measure. Like any good championship course, there is a particularly strong finish, which is ideal for tournaments or matchplay events right down to those tense conclusions to the weekly four-ball matches where there might only be a pound or two at stake. Four of the seven most difficult holes on the card can be found in the closing stages, meaning anyone with a lead can never rest on their laurels. If you score well regularly at Beauport Park, rest easy: you are a fine golfer who will find their handicap attained here travels well when visiting other courses.

Take the Course Tour Plan ahead for your visit to Beauport Park and make the most of your round with some top tips from our resident professionals on how to tackle the course. Hole 1 (Battle Road) 363 yards, par 4 A straightforward opening hole with a fairway bunker to catch the well-struck drive. There are ponds on both sides, hidden in the trees. Greenside bunkers guard the green left and right but there is room at the back for an over-hit ball. Hole 2 (Top ‘o’ Sussex) 493 yards, par 5 Rising gently up to the green in the distance and the only par 5 on the front 9. A wide open fairway which narrows at 260 yards and favours a drive to the right which opens up the fairway for the second shot. There are bunkers either side of the green and little room for anything long. Hole 3 (Into the Valley) 385 yards, par 4 A tight driving hole with a right to left sloping fairway into a valley at 250 yards from the tee. There is a slight dog-leg right and a rise up to the green which again is bunkered left and right with the ground falling away to the left of the green. Avoid the sequoia tree on the right from the tee or your shot to the green will be restricted.
10
Beauport Park Golf Club
Hole 4 (The Bunker) 133 yards, par 3 The easiest hole on the course is protected by a deep bunker front left. Keep right as the ground again falls away to the left of the green beyond the bunker. This hole is all about the carry so make sure you have enough club while remembering long into the trees is bound to result in a lost ball. Hole 5 (Switch-Back) 400 yards, par 4 An extremely difficult drive into a deep valley beyond the marker post which also slopes left to right. The approach to the green is steep, there are no bunkers but a severe slope to the right. Balls will collect down to the green from the left. Hole 6 (Climb to View) 199 yards, par 3 A tough, long par 3. Straight up the hill with a deep bunker short right, a bunker back left and a large sloping green. Use more club for this tough tee shot. Your target is left of the large bunker where there is plenty on room to chase the ball up onto the green

Hole 7 (Kentish Lookout) 366 yards, par 4 What a view straight back down the hill! Even though it has a stroke index of 16, anything left is bound to be lost and anything right will be in the trees or blocked by the lone fairway tree. Avoid trying to hold the ball on the green and instead land it short and run it up for the best results, especially in the summer. There is a bunker to the right of the green with no space beyond it or behind the green. Hole 8 (Hidden Hazards) 388 yards, par 4 A strong par 4 crossing two valleys with hazards either side of both. Drive into the wide open fairway beyond the first dip. Either chip into the “saddle” for an easier approach or go for it. There is a bunker and steep slope left of the two-tier green, but plenty of room to the right of the green, that’s the best place to be. Five is a good score! Hole 9 (Biddy’s Dip) 324 yards, par 4 A testing drive to the fairway which dog-legs right beyond the marker post and also slopes right to left. Alternatively, bail out left to a flat area leaving 170 yards or more to the green which has bunkers on either side and slopes right to left. Accuracy is paramount here, so keep the driver in the bag.

Hole 10 (Round the Bend) 299 yards, par 4 Drive down from the elevated tee into the valley with the green just round to the left. If you are feeling brave pull the driver out and go for it but you will have to keep a tight line towards the trees on the left. Alternatively hit an iron down into the valley followed by a wedge. If you can get the ball on the correct level of the two-tiered green your chance of two-putting is much greater. Hole 11 (Joyous Descent) 203 yards, par 3 A beautiful, long, downhill par 3. A bunker right stops balls rolling onto the 12th tee, while a bank to the left should kick the ball down on to the large putting surface. Make sure you have a club in your hand which will keep the ball below the pin. Short is safe, long (and right) is wrong! Hole 12 (Monkey Puzzle) 379 yards, par 4 Truly a classic hole. A hazard runs all along the right side from tee to beyond the green. The fairway is flat on the right but then slopes up to the trees on the left. Use the monkey puzzle tree as your line and let the slope bring your ball down to the flat. There is a deep bunker front left and a pond beyond the winter green short right.

Hole 13 (Stonehouse) 415 yards, par 4 A tough drive up the hill with the tee tucked away on the right. Tree trouble awaits on both sides before the fairway levels out and dog-legs right at 200 yards. There is a very small target for your approach shot so aim to be a little long to avoid the front right bunker. Hole 14 (Heaven’s Stairway) 408 yards, par 4 Stroke index 1 and well deserved. Drive over or into the valley where the fairway dog-legs left and rises steeply 250 yards to a plateau green above. Have plenty of club in your hand, just make sure you don’t go long otherwise you will not hold the green for your third and you’ll be 100 yards back down the fairway. Hole 15 (Copper Beech) 544 yards, par 5 Take a moment to look back and admire the view back over the 14th green. Keep to the right of the marker post as the fairway slopes to the left and there are three trees standing out to block your second. The approach slopes down into the flat green with lone trees protecting right and left so try to land the ball short and it will run up near the green. Long is gone!
16
Beauport Park Golf Club
Hole 16 (Short & Sweet) 140 yards, par 3 A slightly uphill par 3 where it is wise to hit an extra club. There is a tree front left and a bunker front right, but otherwise not too much to worry about. The large green slopes from back to front. Check the pin position as you come down the 15th. Hole 17 (Heartbreak Hill) 474 yards, par 5 A testing par 5 back across the same two valleys as the 8th. There are steep slopes in the trees to the left, though a good tee shot will give you a chance of reaching this par 5 in two. If you are playing it as a three-shotter lay up about 100 yards out for a clear view of the elevated green above atop “Heartbreak Hill”. The green slopes back to front with a big drop to the left. Hole 18 (Rest and be Thankful) 307 yards, par 4 It’s time to catch your breath after the 17th. Drive up to or around the elbow, avoiding the pond in the trees on the corner. Play up to the green in front of the clubhouse which has two bunkers to the right and slopes back off the front. The ditch short of the green is not a hazard.

Members can get to know quickly and easily how they are getting on in the Order of Merit and the results of competitions if they were unable to attend, because we post our results regularly on the internet. Check out www.masterscoreboard.co.uk and do a search for Beauport Park to get an idea of the regular competitions on offer here. Another benefit of the masterscoreboard system is that any member is also able to see his or her current playing handicap in an instant. Our ladies’ section is also very active and enjoy competitive golf throughout the season, both against other clubs and in monthly medals and stablefords. The seniors at Beauport Park are a very friendly and lively bunch who make use of the course and its facilities at every opportunity. They turn up every weekday morning at 7.45 to take on the course, whatever the weather. If you like good banter, then this is the group for you. They call themselves SWAPS, which is short for Shift Workers and Pensioners Society. Much of the competition is informal, with the sheer enjoyment of playing the game more important than the accumulation of items for the trophy cabinet, that is not to say that the stableford held on the first Wednesday of the month isn’t keenly contested!

Junior Academy Beauport Park is fast gaining a reputation as one of the leading clubs in Sussex for young golfers to learn the game of golf and play successfully. Inspired by Head Professional David Edwards, we introduced a Junior Academy which has gone from strength to strength. The scheme is aimed at youngsters aged eight to 18 and involves a 15-week course teaching them the fundamentals at the end of which there is a certificate to those passing the course. The children then progress on to subsequent courses which examine in more detail the individual skills needed to become a fine golfer. There are four academy groups on a Saturday and one on a Sunday. There are competitions and medals to be won though the overriding aim is to provide a safe environment in which everyone can have an enjoyable time. If it wasn’t fun the academy would not now boast between 60 and 80 youngsters, several of whom already have single-figure handicaps. The club takes care of its youngsters, who we hope will become full members of the club and represent Beauport Park with honour and distinction in the future. Some of them are already doing so, with several of our youngsters having gone on to represent Sussex.

Clubhouse and Dining You don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy our facilities, but you can always be sure of a warm and friendly welcome in the cosy and comfortable clubhouse. It really is a spectacular setting and from our full-length balcony there are fantastic views to the 18th hole and beyond over some of the most inspiring scenery 1066 Country has to offer. Inside you can relax in our comfortable surroundings, which include leather sofas and chairs. In the winter, relax by our log fire. In the summer take in the superb views whilst you meet with your friends or colleagues. We are fully licensed with a selection of draught and bottled beers from around the world and also have a selection of fine wines, together with an extensive range of refreshing soft drinks. Our snack menu offers a range of tasty baguettes and sandwiches, fresh coffee and all-day breakfast. Or if you have a large appetite why not order one of our specials off the board. With a selection of dishes from steaks to scones all freshly prepared by our outstanding catering team and we are sure you will find something to suit your needs. There are filling golfer’s favourites such as lasagne (beef and vegetarian), ham, egg and chips or scampi and chips to offerings for the more adventurous such as beef chilli or a filling griddled chicken Caesar salad for the health conscious. And let’s not forget the Full Monty Breakfast which is guaranteed to replenish the calories you have expended out on the course. If is advisable you eat this one after a round rather than before it because once consumed you may have trouble getting out of your chair to make that tee-time!
