Sydenham High has just celebrated 125 years of educating girls aged 4 to 18 from across London and the South East to outstandingly high standards. In fact in Summer 2012 we achieved some of our best ever GCSE and A level results. This followed an Inspection report which judged the school to be outstanding for providing a first class education that allows pupils to be intellectually fulfilled whilst offering lively, stimulating enrichment beyond the classroom. That enrichment is embedded in school life because we believe in educating and not just examining our girls. With small class sizes and individual attention, education at Sydenham High focuses on helping each student to achieve her personal best in and beyond the classroom. It may be organising a fundraiser or producing a school show; playing in the orchestra or leading a Duke of Edinburgh expedition in Morocco.
What’s important is that our girls are not afraid to accept a challenge, have the courage to try new things and the self-belief to see them through We’re proud of our girls’ excellent academic achievement and we’re equally proud of our award-winning choir; our musicians; our theatrical productions; our creativity in art and design and our excellent sport, including a new elite athlete support programme from September 2013. There are no less than five hours of timetabled sport per week at Junior School and once at Senior School the girls have access to a very wide range of sports, from fencing and water polo to cricket and rugby. Come and visit us to discover more about the outstanding educational experience we have to offer.
The
Cricket
Club
The juniors compete in the North Kent Junior League and Cup competitions at all ages from Under-11, regularly winning league and cup medals, while our Under-9 side also competes in the KCB-organised festival.
For junior members that show special talent we run an academy in both the winter and summer, with many of our former juniors progressing to represent Kent and Surrey at county level.
We recognise the future of our great game is in the hands of our junior cricketers and offer vastly discounted membership rates to younger players, with even more attractive rates for those aged 16 or under.
Our outdoor season starts in April and runs until the end of August, during which time we have a packed programme offering coaching, holiday camps, competitions and social activities for our junior cricketers.
Our cricket coaching is overseen by qualified cricket coaches, many of whom also play in our senior sides.
All new members are welcome to attend training on Tuesday and Thursday evenings during the summer at our Foxgrove Road ground. Please visit the cricket website at www.beckenhamcc.co.uk for more details.

There are men’s, ladies’ and junior squash teams playing in Kent league and cup competitions. The club also runs two senior sides, one playing in the North West Kent Priory League and the other in the Wellington Cup.

The
Primary
Club
T
he Primary Club – the cricketers’ charity that raises money for blind and partially-sighted people – was founded at Beckenham Cricket Club in 1955, and now has members all over the world. The eccentric origins of the club go back to one particular match, and four hapless Beckenham players who each failed to survive a single ball of their innings. After enthusiastically reviving their spirits in the bar, they hit on the inspired idea of forming a club to raise money for blind cricketers – the only membership qualification being that of having a first-ball dismissal to your name in any form of the game. Over half a century later, the club boasts nearly 10,000 members worldwide who have between them raised over £2 million, and in so doing funded many sports and recreational facilities for the blind and partially-sighted. Over the years the Test Match Special radio team – most notably the late Brian Johnston – have been avid supporters of the club and its works. In 1997 Derek Underwood MBE, himself a former Beckenham player, became patron of the club. For more information, contact The Primary Club, PO Box 12121, Saffron Waldron CB10 2ZS. Reg. History
I
n early 1866 the Beckenham Cricket Club was founded by Mr AC Wathen and friends who had the permission of Mr Peter Hoare to use the private cricket ground at Kelsey. After the first season at Kelsey the ground on Foxgrove Road was leased and play has continued here ever since. The first recorded game was on 19th May 1866 between a Married X and a Single X. Even taking into account the fact that the game was only 10-a-side, scoring was low. Single made 95 batting first and, in reply, Married mustered a rather hen-pecked 71 including 21 wides!
The Beckenham Cricket Club played its first game the following week against the Saturday CC, losing by 137 runs to 51, and had to wait until 23rd June 1866 for its first win against South-Eastern Railway. These were early days for club cricket in general and fixtures were hard to come by. Several notable fixtures took place between 1885 and 1895 between Beckenham, Bexley and Bickley Park. In 1885 Beckenham replied to Bexley’s 77 all out with 470 for 0, but, it wasn’t always so easy. Bexley returned the favour the following year and in June 1894 Beckenham suffered their largest ever defeat
35
against a Hampstead side containing AE Stoddart of England and FR “The Demon” Spofforth of Australia. Hampstead made 269 and promptly dismissed Beckenham twice for 13 and 21. Spofforth (8 for 7 and 4 for 4) lived up to his nickname. By the end of the century two teams were turning out for the club on most Saturdays. The Whole-Day and Half-Day sides were starting to field players who would become well known throughout Kent and Beckenham, including P Northcote, FD Brown, CO Cooper and GJ Gulliver.

History
Beckenham’s annual cricket week started in 1893, with the first ever game a two-day fixture against Oxford University Authentics, and the event continues to this day. The period up to WWI was dominated by HZ “Zouch” Baker with some outstanding all round performances. He was a stroke-playing, correct batsman and a bowler with immaculate control of length, moving the ball both ways, as well as a fine fielder.
When war was declared on 4th August 1914, the club closed down. The war took a heavy toll on the club and it lost 25 members, among them fine players such as KR McLoughlin, AA Torrens and HJ Edwards. They are all remembered on a roll of honour in the bar. Cricket finally returned to Foxgrove Road in 1919.
37
Bert Curwen almost single-handedly managed to keep cricket going throughout the war years. Although the standards may not have been as high, it provided the opportunity for many young cricketers in the area. Several bombs fell on or near the ground during the war and one morning it was Bert with groundsman George Carter who arrived to find a land mine had fallen near the tennis court. With glass and paper everywhere George asked Bert where to start.

History “First thing is to get the bar straight,” came the reply, proving not everything changes! Sadly Bert did not survive the war, dying in March 1945. He had joined Beckenham in 1884 and it is impossible to convey how much he meant to the club. After first gracing the field in 1929 the extra Half-Day XI, with a name change, became firmly established in 1945. They became The Wizards and were a success from the start. Charles Miller took over as captain after a year and became their inspiration for the next 25 years. They became an institution with their own ties and traditions largely thanks to Charles. The Wizards had a remarkable win in 1949 scoring 104 before dismissing Farningham for 9.
“Beckenham’s annual cricket week started in 1893, with the first ever game a two-day fixture against Oxford University Authentics, and the event continues to this day.” On 4th July 1955 Ralph Lilly made history by taking all 10 wickets against the Butterflies who made 192. Earlier that year John Stickland had taken 9 for 38 and the following year Peter Hulston took 9 for 48 against Wickham. In 1959 CJ Edgar emulated Lilly taking 10 against Crockham Hill for the Wizards. This clinched a tight, low-scoring game by seven runs after Beckenham had only managed 98 in the first innings.
In 1962 the two Underwood brothers played for Beckenham; Derek was only 17 and playing for Kent’s 2nd XI. It is interesting that in Ronnie’s history in 1966 he states that he has no doubt Derek will have a long and fruitful first class career! In an early game for the club Derek took 7-28 against Cyphers. The next season he took 101 wickets for Kent. He will always be remembered for operating on wet wickets, but in 1976 at the Oval he was the only England
39
bowler able to put the brakes on a rampant IVA Richards on a belter of a track. Probably his finest hour though, predictably, also came on a wet one at the Oval in 1968. After Australia had appeared to be saved by the weather, Underwood reduced them from 110 for 6 to 125 all out in half an hour on the final day, drawing the series for England.

History A Brief History of Tennis at Beckenham Although Beckenham Cricket Club was founded in 1866, the sport of tennis was not played on the Foxgrove Road grounds until 1879 when, in response to the growing popularity of tennis and the increasing interest in The Championships at Wimbledon, three grass courts were cut. The Beckenham tennis section was established shortly before nearby Bromley and Bexley clubs making Beckenham one of the oldest surviving lawn tennis clubs in the world. In 1880 the membership of the tennis section was opened up to lady playing members, a full eight years before the Lawn Tennis Association was founded and recognised women as serious players. At this time there was an expansion of the grass court facilities, which today surround the cricket outfield. Beckenham’s influence over other clubs in Kent for the quality of their grass courts, under the management of Groundsman Tate, saw them become a founder member of the Kent Lawn Tennis Association in 1890. Beckenham Cricket Club staged the Kent All-Comers’ Championships, an international tennis tournament, on its outfield from 1886-1996. In June 1968, Beckenham became the first grass-court event in the world ‘open’ to both amateur and professional players. The tournament, contested two or three weeks before The Championships at Wimbledon, was highly regarded by players as a dress rehearsal due to the quality and speed of the club’s grass courts, which were cut on the cricket outfield. It had a garden party atmosphere as a result of spectators being allowed to watch matches only a few yards from the court.
Dozens of legendary players in the history of tennis competed at Beckenham Cricket Club from the tournament’s infancy, including early champions Dorothea Douglass Lambert Chambers, Anthony Wilding, Bill Tilden, Bill Johnston, Elizabeth Ryan, Molla Mallory, Senorita Elia de Alvarez, Helen Wills Moody, Fred Perry and Bunny Austin. Appearances by Maureen Connolly, Althea Gibson, Lew Hoad, Ken Rosewall, Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, John Newcombe, Maria Bueno, Ann Jones, Margaret Smith-Court and Billie Jean Moffitt-King helped further develop Beckenham’s rich tradition. The Kent All-Comers’ Championships was the world’s first tournament to have a sponsor, Rothmans, in 1963, after a special dispensation from the Lawn Tennis Association, the governing body of British tennis.

History
Almost five years later in March 1968 at a Special General Meeting in Paris, Beckenham was awarded the status of an Open event. The club welcomed amateur and professional players to compete in the world’s first Open grass-court tournament in June 1968. It was the third ‘Open’ field after the British Hard Court Open in Bournemouth and the French Open at Roland Garros. In the professional era sponsorship agreements were signed with Rothmans, Green Shield, Kentish Times and Direct Line Insurance, which ensured a new generation of champions competed at the Foxgrove Road ground for prize money.
Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, Arthur Ashe, John McEnroe, Pat Cash, Stefan Edberg, Ivan Lendl, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras, Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova all visited in an attempt to win Beckenham titles and gain grass-court experience. Beckenham Tennis Club is very fortunate and honoured to have an honorary member in Maria Bueno. Maria is one of only a small number of players who won both the Wimbledon and Beckenham championships in their career, (and one of even fewer who did it in the same year). Since that year in 1964, Maria has been a regular summer visitor to

Beckenham, and in 2004 celebrated the club’s 125th anniversary with us. When a sponsor couldn’t be found for the tournament in 1996, 33 double winners (those who have won the singles title at Beckenham and Wimbledon) had etched their names in Beckenham folklore. Now, all we have is memories of marvellous summers and the knowledge that Beckenham played a pivotal part in the development of lawn tennis.
