a brief history It was in 1906 that a group of golf enthusiasts, consisting of mainly railway workers on the north side of Glasgow, leased 53 hectares of land in the Kenmure area of Bishopbriggs adjacent to the Forth and Clyde Canal and set in motion their plans for the development of a golf course. The site we know today lies within the boundaries of the original Kenmure Estate purchased by Charles Stirling, a West India trader, in 1806. Once the land was secured, the shrewd band of golfers designed the nine hole parkland course in October 1906 and which was extended to 18 holes in 1911. They made the prudent decision to build the clubhouse in the style of a family home, so if the golf course failed they could recoup their investment by selling the house as a domestic residence. There was never a need to resort to Plan B. By the 1920s and 1930s the golf club was very successful, members paying subscriptions at around 7/6d per annum. Initially, no golf was allowed on Sundays, and members faced sanction for taking to the course without wearing their club badge.
www.thebishopbriggsgolfclub.com
In the early days sheep grazed the course with the greens cut by hand with the help of horse-drawn cutters used a few times during the summer to keep the rough in check. Finally, 1930 saw the first tractor-drawn cutting machines in action, which must have delighted members and greens staff alike. In the 1940s and 1950s the course was a popular venue during the day for many music hall artistes appearing at the Empire and other theatres in Glasgow with a wide range of playing abilities and artistic temperaments. Their visits were always very popular with the “juniors” who found lots of good balls and the occasional golf club on the course after the “artistes” attempts at the game of golf. The members purchased the golf course lease in 1991 and a significant investment has since been undertaken to enhance many areas of the golf course and its surrounds to ensure the golfing experience at Bishopbriggs compares favourably with any to be found in the area.

the course With its tree-lined fairways and excellent greens, The Bishopbriggs Golf Club is always popular with visitors. The golf club has enjoyed significant investment in recent times, including money spent on drainage and the layout of the course, resulting in the creation of three new holes. A number of holes on the golf course provide golfers with inspiring views of both the Campsie Fells and the adjacent Possil Loch which is renowned for its abundance of wildlife. The Bishopbriggs burn comes into play through the golf course and adds to an enjoyable and challenging golfing experience. Visitors should note it is worth checking the course planner for the presence of water hazards on each hole before teeing off to avoid any nasty card-wrecking surprises!
www.thebishopbriggsgolfclub.com
However your round turns out, your surroundings will never disappoint. A significant element of “policy” woodland broadleafed tree species such as oak, ash and beech established at that time of the course’s creation still remains today. This and the abundance of flora and fauna ensures our 18 holes is never a good walk spoiled. The course stretches to 6,262 yards (par 71) off the white medal tees. It is a slightly more forgiving 5,946 yards off the yellow tees and plays 5,536 from off the red tees, though an extra shot on the 10th (which is played as a par 5) provides some assistance for the Ladies. There are three par-3s - two in the closing stretch of five holes - and two par-5s, with the remainder a good selection of par-4s that examine all areas of your game.

the course continued You have to be on your game right from the first shot as the course opens with a testing dog-leg par-4 to the right. The first encounter with the burn comes in front of the par-3 2nd, with the burn in front of the green or three bunkers ready to swallow any under-hit second shots. The card says at Stroke Index 18 it is the easiest hole on the course, but it is not to be underestimated. The signature hole of the round is arguably the excellent 16th Hole AULD BRIG 389 yards Par 4. A good drive then a decision to take on the burn in front of a sloping green with bunkers at both sides.
www.thebishopbriggsgolfclub.com
The back nine is far flatter than the inward nine, but no less interesting and has three new holes to contend with. The 384-yard 10th is a testing hole with a blind tee shot and an accurate approach over water, which has benefited more than any other from the money spent on improving course drainage. The 14th is a medium length par 3 that was created in the club’s centenary year. Featuring a raised tee and a sloping green, it is the toughest short hole on the course. If you do not play to your handicap on your first visit, do not despair, it becomes easier with a bit of local knowledge. Just ask our members!

TAKE the course TOUR We hope you enjoy your time with us at The Bishopbriggs Golf Club. Here are a few handy tips and course notes which should help you make the most of your round if you have never visited us before. Hole 1 (Kenmure), 370 yards, par 4 The successful tee shot centre left will open up the hole as it dog-legs to the right. For the approach to the green play safe and aim for the centre of the green irrespective of the pin position. Any shot missed on the right leaves a tricky pitch. A rewarding par 4 can set you up for the rest of the round. Hole 2 (Burnbank), 133 yards, par 3 A short par 3 which should not be underestimated. Negotiate the burn in front of the green, which is protected by three bunkers. Your par will be achieved by taking one more club than it looks.
12
THE BISHOPBRIGGS GOLF CLUB
Hole 3 (Plateau), 310 yards, par 4 Distance is no advantage for this straightforward par 4, and is perhaps a birdie opportunity for some. Many play short of the ridge in the fairway to leave a full shot to a plateau green, which should favour the left side. Miss the green right, and your par becomes a struggle. Hole 4 (Rookery), 367 yard, par 4 A challenging par 4 up the slope. Hold your drive left of centre to set up your approach to the green. A successful shot to the green will be to the left half since the bunker protecting the right will gather the weaker shot. A long green makes club selection critical.
www.thebishopbriggsgolfclub.com
Hole 5 (Meiklems), 310 yards, par 4 A short dog leg par 4 with accuracy off the tee paramount. A tee shot of around 190 yards provides the best view of the green down a narrow tree-lined avenue. The longer hitters can reach the putting surface with a well placed tee shot but missing the fairway left or right can be fatal. The very large green is well bunkered and has many complex borrows to add to the difficulty of the hole.
Hole 7 (Stane Dyke), 411 yards, par 4 A medium length par 4 with a cross burn a short distance from the tee to catch the miss hit and a lateral ditch to catch the slice. The shorter hitters will require to negotiate the cross bunkers to reach the green which slopes deceptively from back left to front right. The view to the right side of the green is augmented by the first stage of the reinstatement to its former glory of a HA-HA wall.
Hole 6 (The Firs), 331 yards, par 4 This hole requires the tee shot to be positioned or the approach to a green with a narrow entrance becomes increasingly more difficult. A group of trees on the right side of the fairway is balanced by the out of bounds to the left side. The green is steeply banked on three sides punishing wide and over-hit shots and a weak strike will inevitably end up in one of the front bunkers.
Hole 8 (Lang Riggs), 507 yards, par 5 The first of two par 5s on the course where the longer hitters must beware the bunker hidden from the tee to the right side of the tree-lined fairway. For most players the key is to position the second shot to the left side of the fairway to prevent the approach being impeded by the large tree and the bunker to the right side of the undulating green.

Hole 9 (Kenwood), 416 yards, par 4 A straightaway par 4 which, into the prevailing wind, tends to play much longer than the yardage. The cross bunkers must be avoided as these will be in play for all but the longer hitters. The approach to the green tends to be foreshortened by the flat area to the front and a bunker to the right side waits to snap up the weak shot. Hole 10 (Shangie), 384 yards, par 4 Undoubtedly one of the course’s most challenging holes. For years the source of devastating flooding but with the investment in drainage now the driest fairway on the course. The blind tee shot must be struck truly to set up the second shot over the burn in front of the green with its horseshoe of mature trees. The shot must be played “all the way to the putting surface” as the steep bank in front of the green prevents shots “bouncing up”.
www.thebishopbriggsgolfclub.com
Hole 11 (Carron), 327 yards, par 4 From the tee the pot bunkers to the right of the steep fairway lie in wait for the shorter hitters. The brow of the hill is the target for most players which permits an unrestricted view of the deceptive front to back slope of the green which is only receptive to the truly struck shot. Everything else inevitably finishes off the back or side of the putting surface with the cautious pulling up short leaving tricky recovery shots. Hole 12 (Bing), 428 yards, par 4 The longest par 4 on the course is enhanced by a dog leg to the left at driving distance. Though bunkerless the green is well protected by out of bounds tight to the left, heavy rough to the rear and a raised front edge which ensures a challenging second shot to gain a two-putt par.

Hole 13 (Balmuildy), 389 yards, par 4 A medium length par 4 with a relatively wide fairway but beware the second of three burns which will catch a poor tee shot and a strategically placed bunker on the right side of the fairway to catch the longer drive. The approach shot to the green is over the third burn, narrow but with a large catchment area, to the biggest green on the course, some 40 yards deep. Once on the green, perhaps the biggest challenge of this hole is the steeply tiered and contoured putting surface and avoiding the three putt. Hole 14 (Centenary), 157 yards, par 3 A medium length par 3 created in our Centenary year provides one of the stiffest challenges on the course. The tee shot from the raised tee is visually daunting with a long carry over a water hazard to a smallish sloping green. The safest

line is well protected by a large bunker 20 yards short left of the green with a further bunker capturing balls drifting to the right. Miss the green at your peril – recovery is difficult to say the least. Hole 15 (Mavis Valley), 522 yards, par 5 A longish par five in the opposite direction to the 13th with the same three burns to negotiate. Again, this has a relatively generous fairway off the tee with a large lateral water hazard to the right catching the wayward fade. The second burn, around 350 yards from the tee, now comes into play for the second shot which must be played into the narrowest part of the fairway with bunkers left and right. Once negotiated, the approach to the green is over the third wide burn to a relatively small but level green. A par 5 here will always be welcome.
www.thebishopbriggsgolfclub.com
Hole 16 (Auld Brig), 389 yards, par 4 The golf courses’ signature hole, an excellent par 4 requires a good drive to gain position for an exacting second shot. The drive, often shortened by a sloping fairway, can leave a difficult shot to a green across a burn which runs along the right side of the fairway. A pin at the front of a sloping green and bunkers at both sides still offers a challenge to those who do not take on the burn with their second shot.
Hole 18 (Avenue), 366 yards, par 4 This aptly-named par 4 bordered by trees with the burn and out of bounds running down the left side for its full length is a good finishing hole. The second shot to a long sloping green with a narrow entrance is increased in difficulty by front bunkers and small banks on each side.
Hole 17 (Ca’canny), 145 yards, par 3 Short par 3 to a raised green again using the burn as a feature and bunkers on both sides to catch the weaker tee shots. Difficulty is increased by positioning of the pin to the front of a green with a steep bank from the burn. If the green is missed it leaves a difficult pitch from all sides to match par.

biodiversity project Golf clubs have not always had the best reputations when it comes to looking after the environment, but here at Bishopbriggs we have looked to buck that trend.
The work is aimed at providing invaluable habitat corridors that help to link other semi-natural/natural habitats together both within the golf course and beyond.
The club has looked to manage the land on which we sit in an environmentally-friendly manner, with this best practice put in place to show we can co-exist in sympathy with our natural surroundings and plant and animal wildlife rather than being at odds with them.
Volunteers from the club followed up these initial efforts by planting blackthorn and hawthorn plants, enabled by a grant for Action Earth and the next step is to introduce bumble bee and insect wintering boxes and bat boxes in selected areas.
We were delighted to be awarded a Biodiversity Grant cofunded by East Dunbartonshire Council and Scottish National Heritage. This money was put to good use to fund a wild flower planting project on an out-of-play area on the golf course, the grass banking at the side of the old 6th fairway.
www.thebishopbriggsgolfclub.com
We are tremendously proud of this work and it is playing its own part in assisting the golf club in achieving our objective of providing a quality golf course, which, through the design, playing surface, general presentation and environmental consideration places Bishopbriggs among the top inland courses in the West of Scotland.

Members’ Golf Bishopbriggs offers a full programme of competitive golf throughout the year, both in the form of matches against other clubs and in internal competitions in pursuit of the club’s numerous honours board competitions and trophies and against other clubs. The major inter-club competition for the men is the Donald Cameron League, a scratch matchplay league that features home and away competition against six other clubs in the same division. The club won Division One in 2010 for the first time since the league’s inception in 1947 and were victorious again the following year just to prove it was no fluke! The winners of this meet the winners of the Brand Putter League, South of the River, for the Boundary Bell, with the victors rightly calling themselves the Champions of Glasgow and having the chance to compete against the champions of Edinburgh for the Inter-Cities Cup. You do not have to be a scratch golfer to enjoy inter-club golf in Glasgow, however. The Thomson McCrone League is similar to its Donald Cameron counterpart, but it aimed at players in the 9 to 20 handicap range.
www.thebishopbriggsgolfclub.com
Other team competitions such as the Bill Jessiman Memorial Trophy and Donald Cameron League Foursomes knockout ensure the golfing diary is a busy one. The over-55s play in the Kelvin Friendship Seniors League whose aim, as its name suggests, is to create a harmonious and friendly competition between the seniors of its members clubs. After the day’s golf is complete as the social side to golf comes to the fore as old friendships are renewed or new ones made in the clubhouse. The Ladies also enjoy similar inter-club competition in the Patrick Trophy, an event whose formation is of particular interest to our club. In 1949, in an attempt to be able to play good competitive golf after working hours, two ladies, Miss Elizabeth Ogilvie from Kirkintilloch Golf Club and Miss Patrick from The Bishopbriggs Golf Club began what is now known as The Patrick Trophy League solely for working women in and around the Dunbartonshire district.

The League consists of seven teams: Bishopbriggs, Cawder, Douglas Park, Hayston, Hilton Park, Kirkintilloch and Lenzie. 60 years later, in keeping with tradition, all games are still played after work within a two month period to make best use of evening light. The Ladies enjoy a regular social programme throughout the winter which allows everyone to keep in touch, whether or not the weather outside is suitable for golfing. There is also a Ladies Coffee Evening held in March and a Ladies Open Day in June, affording the opportunity to showcase the club to potential new members and to raise money for good causes. As far as the Club competitions are concerned, the traditional monthly medals and Stablefords can be found in the diary,

as well as more light-hearted events giving ample opportunity for mixed golf and fun matches between the various sections at the club. Singles or pairs, medal play or matchplay, Stableford or some other fun form of competition, there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever the time of year. Over the years, many golfing groups have been formed and while not officially recognised, these groups contribute greatly to the fabric of the Club and meet on a regular basis to enjoy social golf, the most relaxed and for many, pleasurable format of the sport. Most of these groups have some sort of “end of season” competition whether it is a finals-type day or an inter-group competition.

JUNIORS At The Bishopbriggs Golf Club we believe strongly in the development of our junior members. The Juniors here are a vibrant and talented group, who have gone from strength to strength since the opening of our Academy and as a result of the club formulating a Junior Development Action Plan (JDAP) in line with the Scottish Golf Union Junior Charter.
But just like ClubGolf itself, Bishopbriggs is focused on offering a chance to participate for all who wish to experience the game, while at the same time developing those who show a particular aptitude.
We have well in excess of 100 junior members, most drawn from the town, and hope that encouraging golf at junior level will lay firm foundations for future adult membership, as well as raise the quality of young golfers here.
• ClubGolf Level 1 Structured teaching by Level 1 Coaches covering safety, etiquette, rules and technique. (Mandatory for all new members)
Our most talented players play representative golf for the club in the top division of the J.J. McCarry League, which features home and away matchplay competition against six other clubs from Glasgow. This gives the juniors the opportunity to develop their game playing in a very competitive golfing environment and to experience playing on some of the area’s outstanding courses. By starting a junior coaching programme in 2001 and being one of the first clubs locally to adopt the national junior golf programme, Clubgolf, in 2003 it is no surprise to those involved that the club has reaped the rewards in recent years, with several of our youngsters lifting some of Glasgow’s premier competitions for junior golfers. ClubGolf is Scotland’s national junior golf programme supporting the early development of young golfers through structured coaching, from beginner through to the highest levels of achievement through instruction from qualified ClubGolf trained teachers, volunteer coaches and PGA professionals.
www.thebishopbriggsgolfclub.com
The club offers the following opportunities for juniors:
• Structured coaching for general Junior members age 12 and upwards. • Structured coaching for J.J. McCarry team members. • Supervised Mini medals over 6 holes within new Practice area for all new members. • Friendly team competitions with other local Clubs for non J.J. McCarry team players. Beginners are started on the club’s Academy Course, learning the basics of chipping, putting and the full swing, as well as etiquette and the rules of the game, two equally important components for a lifetime of enjoyable golf. Having achieved a target score on the Academy course, youngsters are allowed to enter handicap competitions on the blue course and progress to the red, yellow and, ultimately, white tees in due course dependent upon their ability.

Academy and Practice Facilities Few golf clubs in the area are blessed with practice facilities to compare with those at Bishopbriggs, making us an excellent perfect place for juniors and beginners to learn the game. We were thrilled when Scottish professional golfer and former winner of the Amateur Championship Gordon Sherry opened our new Golf Academy area in November 2010. The new golf academy facilities feature: • 9-hole par 3 course • 6 bay driving range (3 covered 3 open) • Two practice greens for short game and bunker play The facilities were made possible by the support of sportscotland and a generous grant from the National Lottery. The Academy Area is open to all members from the beginner to the experienced golfer. As well as being a tremendous asset to the club and to our juniors in particular, it is also open as a community resource.
www.thebishopbriggsgolfclub.com
It should prove the first stepping stone for a whole generation of new golfers. Nothing would make us more proud than future champions saying they learnt their game with us at the Bishopbriggs Academy. The Bishopbriggs Golf Club is delighted to have recently been appointed Scottish Golf Union Development Centre status and the Club will be a key partner in the promotion of the improvement of a young golfer’s all round game, focusing on the fundamentals and skills development, with a particular focus on short game and putting. The facilities throughout Scotland which the Scottish Golf Union have selected will provide an environment which will allow them to work on all these aspects so it’s not just about hitting balls on a driving range. In addition, a series of educational workshops will be delivered that will allow both players and importantly their parents to gain a better understanding of Performance Development for Golf.

Clubhouse The clubhouse offers great comfort and a welcoming atmosphere in which to socialise and relax either after a round of golf or as members of the club. The bar is well stocked with a wide selection of beers, wines, and spirits and a choice of soft drinks. Hot and cold food is served daily seven days a week. You can enjoy a good selection of snacks at the bar or enjoy something more substantial from the menu in the dining room. The clubhouse has been refurbished in recent years and is a very agreeable place to spend some time. There is a large main lounge for relaxing in after your golf, together with a dining room that can comfortably seat in excess of 50 people.

The TV lounge is a popular location for watching all the latest sporting events and for those looking for some competition on those rainy days, there is a pool table or a Wii computer console to pass the time. Conversely, when the weather is good, there is a very nice patio area which makes for a very pleasant spot in summer to sit with a cooling drink. Clubhouse hours are normally 8am to 11.15pm during the golfing season from April to October. Hours are shorter in winter and subject to change.

better spot. There are some lovely views out over the course towards the Campsie Fells and the clubhouse offers the perfect environment away from the office in which to conduct business. Surrounded by countryside and parkland, it is hard to believe we are just a short drive from central Glasgow. But our location enables you to have the best of both worlds: peace and quiet with the benefits of a major city nearby offering excellent air, road and rail links to visitors.
Play is available before 4.30pm on Monday to Friday and any additional extras such as coaching clinics can be arranged given adequate notice.
The clubhouse is comfortable and well-appointed, with Wi-Fi and audio-visual facilities for those important presentations.
We have a flexible attitude here at Bishopbriggs and if the corporate membership option above does not quite meet your needs, come to us with your perfect package and we will do our utmost to accommodate you.

Social Activities Bishopbriggs prides itself on being a friendly club and as well as getting to play a fine and historic golf course as often as they choose, members enjoy an active social calendar. An extensive and varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in entertainment. These events are aimed not only at the members, but their partners as well, so they too can enjoy being a part of club life. Members who are partial to musical entertainment and tribute acts or live bands can often be found among the offerings on the social calendar. Other events have included quiz nights, race nights, karaoke, shows by comedians and sportsman’s dinners featuring guest speakers. We’ve even had a Psychic Night - but didn’t need to tell our members because they knew it was coming!

For those who like dressing up in their finery, there are more formal occasions such as the annual black tie dinner held at the beginning of November. Autumn is a busy time of year for special events, with both the ladies and men holding separate presentation evenings to celebrate those who have excelled in club competitions. Burn’s Night is celebrated in January, while Christmas sees something for the children with a Christmas party and the adults with a dinner dance. New Year’s Eve is traditionally spent in the company of friends at the club with a lively Hogmanay Hoolie seeing in the new year.
