Welcome

C

ame Down Golf Club, located in Thomas Hardy country just south of Dorchester in Dorset, offers a spectacular golfing challenge suitable for all skill levels.

The course sits on chalk downland and offers stunning 360 degree views to locations such as Weymouth, Portland, Dorchester, Isle of Wight, Maiden Castle and more. The current layout was designed by Harry Shapland Colt, who includes Muirfield, Royal Lytham, Pine Valley, St Andrews, Wentworth and Sunningdale among his other masterpieces. Founded in 1896, we can lay claim to being the birthplace of the Ryder Cup, because it was during his numerous visits to Came Down that Samuel Ryder was given the inspiration to create the most famous team competition in world golf.

Golf World magazine named our course among their 100 “Hidden Gems”, placing us in illustrious company, and we would be delighted if you paid us a visit to discover for yourself why we received such an accolade. Came Down is a very friendly club and visitors are more than welcome to come and sample our hospitality. Our members enjoy much competitive and social golf and we are also able to offer them reciprocal golf at a number of other outstanding courses across the South. For a round of golf in Dorset, there’s nowhere better than Came Down. Came Down Golf Club | 5

The Club’s Origins

T

his brief history of Came Down’s origins starts with a private club, situated at Broadway Farm, locally known as ‘Lorton Links’.

6 | Came Down Golf Club

When play there was terminated in 1895, negotiations began with the landowner Lord Portarlington for 180 acres on Came Down. Successful talks led to Tom Dunn of Bournemouth laying out the original nine-hole course of 3,620 yards complete with small pavilion. The ‘Dorchester Golf Club’ opened for play on March 2, 1896.

With golf in Bournemouth proving such a successful attraction, Weymouth Town Council enlisted former Open Champion J.H. Taylor as their golf course architect in 1904, with a view to setting up a first-class 18-hole course. Taylor took the view that there was no land suitable for golf south of the Ridgeway and recommended the expansion of the Dorchester Club’s course to 18 holes. The proposal was carried out and the course extended to 18 holes over 6,090 yards. In addition, a new clubhouse was constructed at the northern end of the course and the Great Western Railway were persuaded to build a ‘halt’ at Monkton to provide golfers with easier access to the course just a mile away.

The new course opened under the revised name of the ‘Weymouth, Dorchester and County Golf Club’ on May 15, 1906. During 1910 the club appointed Ernest Whitcombe to be the club professional. Later his mother Bessie was appointed as the stewardess and brought her other two sons, Charles and Reg for a stay of 17 years. The brothers did much to put the club on the map by their brilliant play, which brought them many national tournament victories. During their time here the brothers got to know Samuel Ryder, a country member who played at Came Down when on holiday in Weymouth. It was an association

which was to change the face of golf and one which we cover in more depth elsewhere in this brochure. During 1923 and 1924 the club was thriving, helped by the fame and popularity of the Whitcombe brothers. A resolution was passed to liquidate the original company known as ‘Weymouth, Dorchester and County Golf Club Company’ and alter the name to ‘Came Down Golf Club’. It was also agreed to raise money for improvement to the course and clubhouse.

It was not until 1927, however, that the work started. Harry Shapland Colt was employed to undertake a major course reconstruction. Mr Colt was himself a fine player but even more famous world-wide as a golf course architect responsible for such courses as Sunningdale, Wentworth, Royal Portrush and the redesign of Broadstone.

HMS Iron Duke

A

s well as Came Down’s links to the Ryder Cup, visitors may be fascinated to learn that our Club also has a unique association with the Royal Naval ship HMS Iron Duke and its crew.

It all started back in 1931 when HMS Iron Duke (the second ship to bear that name) was stationed in Portland Harbour. The Club offered sailors on the ship a wardroom membership offering discounted rates and a relationship was struck up which saw a match played between Came Down members and officers of the ship. Iron Duke officers presented a very elegant silver salver to the club which is still played for as a major competition to this day.

The link was re-established about ten years ago when contact was made with the crew of the third Iron Duke, a Type 23 frigate launched in 1991. The fixture started up again in 2004, with matches taking place at Came Down and also at the Navy’s course near Portsmouth. Came Down members have even been given a guided tour of the ship and entertained on board. The friendship has grown to such a degree that Came Down has been named an official Affiliate with the Iron Duke, perhaps the only golf club to enjoy such an association with the Royal Navy.

Came Down and the Ryder Cup

H

ere at Came Down Golf Club we like to refer to ourselves as the birthplace of the Ryder Cup. It is no idle boast and makes for a fascinating story.

Samuel Ryder, the donor of the Ryder Cup, was a St Albans seed merchant who made his fortune partly thanks to having the foresight to sell seeds to the public in the form of the ‘Penny Seed Packet’. A member of the Verulam Golf Club, he was determined to improve the lowly status of the golf professional. Accordingly he arranged for one of his companies to sponsor the ‘Heath and Heather’ tournament at his beloved Verulam club in 1923. For his holidays Ryder liked to go to the seaside resort of Weymouth on Dorset’s coast (a few miles from Came Down GC). Taking a party with him comprised of various relations and golfing friends, he always stayed right

on the esplanade at the Royal Hotel. Ryder played golf at Came Down and eventually became a country member. He took the greatest of interests in the club’s affairs, in particular noticing the brilliant play of the Whitcombe brothers. He asked Ernest if they ever played in important tournaments, Ernest replied that they rarely did. They could ill afford the unpaid time and travel costs. Ernest told Ryder, “the Americans come over here smartly dressed and backed by wealthy supporters. The Britisher has a poor chance compared to that”.

Now Sam Ryder was a man full of pity and sympathy for ‘the other chap’. It was just this kind of sympathy for the underdog that Ernest Whitcombe’s comments brought out. Ryder’s eldest daughter Mrs Marjorie Claisen takes up the story in her 1979 booklet entitled ‘The Ryder Family’. “Father considered that something vital was required to rouse golf clubs to take a real interest and responsibility in encouraging any young ‘pros’ who showed promise, such as the Whitcombes at Came Down. He consulted his friends Abe Mitchell and George Duncan who had both made names for themselves in the golfing world. Together they discussed the

question of the poor support given to British ‘pros’, and the idea emerged for some important contest to be set up, to be played solely between Britain and America. Father provided the golf cup; beautifully designed and bearing on top the figure of a golfer based on a photograph of Abe Mitchell.

opportunities for them which were impossible in the old days before ‘ The Ryder Cup ‘.” Members have twice seen the famous trophy at Came Down, most notably in 1996 as part of the centenary celebrations, when it was brought to the Club by Bernard Gallacher, Ryder Cup Captain for our 1995 victory.

So was born The Ryder Cup. It has definitely achieved the aim which father had in mind - British ‘pros’ are now respected and supported by clubs eager that their man shall be included in The Ryder Cup team, on equal standing with the wealthy Americans. The golfing world now has Came Down Golf Club | 11

The Golf Course

I

f you like your golf to be challenging without the need for a ball retriever then you will enjoy Came Down. The course has no water hazards, fewer than 40 bunkers and at 5,903 yards from the visitors’ tees is quite short by modern standards. For the ladies it is a formidable challenge, at 5,563 yards, one of the longest around, but there are few long carries from the tee so the shorter hitters need not despair. The fairways are not narrow and the rough is maintained at a level that should enable you to find your errant shots, or at least most of them.

12 | Came Down Golf Club

That should equate to easy but you will find that is not true. Much of the course is set high on the hill overlooking Dorchester so there is usually enough breeze to be a factor in club selection and the greens have subtle, sometimes not so subtle, slopes, so few 10-foot putts are straight. The amateur course records for men and ladies stand at 65 and 71 respectively.

If your golf is not going well you can still enjoy the wildlife, the wildflowers and the views. In the summer months you can see swifts, swallows and martins; the swallows are often flying past your feet. Buzzards are usually wheeling overhead and there is often a kestrel hovering in search of prey. Pause a moment on the 16th tee to look at the view of Weymouth harbour and Portland and if the visibility is really good you can look to your right on the 18th fairway and see Bournemouth and even the Isle of Wight.

One of Dorset’s best-kept secrets may not remain that way for ever. Every two years Golf World magazine publishes a list of the top 100 courses in Great Britain and Ireland. The courses listed are those which we all know and revere such as St. Andrews, Muirfield, Carnoustie, Sandwich, Wentworth to name but a few. In 2011, the publication decided to add a second list known as ‘Hidden Gems’ which selected another 100 lesser-known but also outstanding courses in the British Isles.

We are proud and delighted to announce that Came Down has been listed in the 100 ‘Hidden Gems’ and thus becomes a club which sits within the top 200 courses in the country.

The club is one of only four clubs in Dorset mentioned in the ‘Hidden Gems’ section, the others being Parkstone, Sherborne and the Isle of Purbeck.

The accreditation is a fully independent and impartial listing, thus demonstrating the strides the club is making to move forward, enhancing its reputation within the national golf community.

ituated close to the county town of Dorchester and also close to the busy coastal resort of Weymouth, Came Down Golf Club offers the ideal location for both the regular local player and the visiting golfer.

The course is a mature layout of 6,255 yards, par 70 for men. Based on freedraining chalk downland, the course rarely closes and offers year-round golf as well as a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Hole 1 (Casterbridge) 435 yards, par 4

Hole 2 (Linden Lea) 156 yards, par 3

Standing on the first tee you have a beautiful view of Dorchester. This view gives the hole its name ‘Casterbridge’ taken from Thomas Hardy’s name for Dorchester. A straightforward hole that plays downhill. The approach shot demands attention as you play downhill to a green that slopes away from you.

Named after a poem written by the Dorset poet William Barnes, this short par 3 is well bunkered. A good tee shot is required if you don’t want to be left a difficult up and down; especially if you go left.

Hole 3 (Spinney) 279 yards, par 4 This short par 4 is a great test. Two accurate shots are needed to leave you with a realistic birdie chance. Anything from a 4-iron to a three wood takes you up level with the bunker and leaves you with a precise wedge to the hole. Stay below the hole in summer as the slick putt from above can take you back off the front of the green.

Hole 4 (Woodside) 570 yards, par 5

Hole 6 (Westward Ho) 231 yards, par 3

The hole plays downhill with more views over Dorchester. There is out of bounds down the right-hand side and two bunkers waiting for the big hitters.

A great par three playing across the valley you have just played up. Beware the well-placed bunkers to the left and right.

Hole 5 (Valley) 402 yards, par 4

Hole 7 (Maiden Castle) 407 yards, par 4

Back towards the clubhouse now and uphill through a valley. A long hole off the white tees into any wind. A tough blind approach uphill to the green.

Named after the largest Iron Age hill fort in Europe. Situated just 2 miles south of Dorchester it covers an area of 47 acres. ‘Maiden’ derives from the Celtic ‘Mai Dun’ which means ‘great hill’. A blind but straightforward tee shot. The approach is a feature of the course, played from above to a green

sunken into a side slope below. A great approach and a buzz when you knock it stiff.

Hole 8 (Hardy) 355 yards, par 4 Named after the Dorset poet and novelist Thomas Hardy. The fairway is dominated by a large pit to the centre/left though some big hitters may decide to go over the pit. The fairway leads to the right of the pit but the further right you go the more you bring the large right-hand greenside bunker into play on the second shot. Great hole from the white tee.

Came Down Golf Club | 19

20 | Came Down Golf Club

Hole 9 (Tweil) 411 yards, par 4 This hole leads back up to the clubhouse. Stroke Index 1 on the card, it plays uphill all the way and requires two solid hits.

Hole 10 (Fred May) 141 yards, par 3 The short 10th hole, Fred May, is played in the summer. Shots to the left can get a lucky bounce on to the green off the bank whilst shots to the right will run down into the trees.

Hole 11 (Moonfleet) 386 yards, par 4

Hole 13 (Greenhill Barrow) 512 yards, par 5

An accurate tee shot up the left-hand side of the fairway rewards you with the best position from which to approach the green. Drives off the tee to the right of the fairway will run off into the rough.

Named after the barrow situated halfway up the fairway. This is a straightforward par 5. Big hitters can reach in two if they can negotiate their way past the barrow.

Hole 12 (Diggory Venn) 194 yards, par 3 Named after a character in Thomas Hardy’s book ‘The Return of the Native’. A great par 3 with a green set in a bank that slopes left to right.

Hole 14 (Mistover Knapp) 489 yards, par 5 Named after a location in the book by Thomas Hardy ‘The Return of the Native’. This is another straightforward hole. The approach to the green is made more difficult by a mound to the left-hand side. Came Down Golf Club | 21

Hole 15 (Who’s a Afear’d) 179 yards, par 3 As the name (which is the motto of the county of Dorset) suggests, a dangerous hole with out of bounds around the back of the green. The hole, being at the top of the course, is made even more difficult if the wind is blowing.

Hole 16 (Slingers) 404 yards, par 4 The tee provides one of the best views on course. It overlooks Weymouth and Portland. Named Slingers in reference to Thomas Hardy’s name for Portland ‘The Isle of Slingers’, due to the fact that Portlanders used to throw stones to keep Kimberlins (strangers) away.

Out of bounds down the right-hand side and grass bunkers on the left. The green is also bordered with out of bounds and has a well-placed bunker guarding the front right-hand side of the green.

Hole 17 (Polly’s Pit) 258 yards, par 4

Hole 18 (Home) 446 yards, par 4 A good finishing hole. The fairway runs off to the right. After two good hits you will have hopefully missed the pot bunker to the right and landed on the USGA-specification green.

The hole takes its name from the large pit to the right of the green, which itself is named after the last pony to be used to work on the course. A short risk and reward par 4. If you are going for the green off the tee, the pit to the right or the deep rough to the left await you if you miss the narrow entrance to the green. Came Down Golf Club | 23

Practice Facilities

W

hile it is always a joy to play our course and savour the spectacular scenery while so doing, golf is a sport like so many others that brings even greater pleasure if it is played well.

It is a satisfying feeling seeing your handicap come tumbling down but to do so you generally need three things: a will to work on your game, an expert to guide you on the right path and the facilities to put those words of wisdom into practice, ingraining them so that they become second nature. If you possess the first of those requirements, Came Down can provide you with the other two. Nick Rodgers, our Professional, is on hand to offer structured tuition and we have some outstanding practice facilities, starting off with a full-size practice ground parallel to the 18th hole where you can hit off turf all

year round with any club in your bag including driver. There is a chipping and pitching area with a couple of practice bunkers adjacent to the clubhouse where a very nice putting green can also be found and there are also a couple of practice nets near the clubhouse for last-minute warm-ups. During the summer our winter 10th green becomes an alternative chipping area, which provides invaluable experience of the conditions you will come across on the course.

Information for Members

T

he Club has about 700 members including almost 100 in the ladies’ section, 160 in the senior’s section and more than 50 juniors. We pride ourselves on the relationship we have with our members, always trying to keep them informed and looking for new ways to ensure their membership represents outstanding value for money. Reciprocal Golf The club has arrangements for complimentary games at a number of clubs in the UK. For details of how to reserve a booking please refer to the

list posted on the noticeboard in the lobby. You will need to book a game via the Manager’s office. We formed partnerships with Wareham (Dorset), Hockley (Hants) and West Wilts in 2011, taking our list of reciprocal clubs to 11.

Suggestion and Course Comments Books

Club Newsletter

Swipe Card

A newsletter is published regularly giving details of any work on the course, forthcoming social events and any other information of special interest.

A swipe card is provided to members which, once money has been added to it, entitles the bearer to a 10 per cent discount on bar purchases. Full prices for drinks are less than most local pubs and restaurants even without the 10 per cent incentive. The swipe card is also available for use in the restaurant, however the discount does not apply to food.

Separate books are kept for written suggestions regarding the Club and the course. These are regularly reviewed and all are replied to.

ame Down is able to offer its membership a wide selection of competitive golf, both of a casual and more serious nature. Our course is one to savour, but so too is the experience of playing alongside your fellow members representing the Club against our neighbours in league matches or knockouts, or in striving to put your name on one of our honours board competitions.

Our golfers also enjoy their Monday Morning roll-ups where there are no tee reservations, play starts off the 1st and 11th tees and is particularly appealing because you can just turn up sure that you will get a game of golf played in a very friendly atmosphere. A random selection of pairings takes place so members are not playing with the same faces every week and new members are integrated into the Club easily and seamlessly.

Juniors Nick Rodgers, our Professional, runs coaching for juniors on Saturday mornings during the golfing season from March to October. These sessions feature small groups of eight and introduce children as young as six to the game. The rolling six-week courses include competitions to stimulate interest and the emphasis is about making the game fun. Children of non-members are very welcome. If a child shows particular talent they will be encouraged to take up more structured individual coaching. Came Down Golf Club | 37

Men Came Down Golf Club’s men are a very active section who enter teams in the Hardy A and the Hardy B Leagues as well as other annual county competitions such as the Beckford Bowl and the Stokes Salver. Each Hardy A League encounter consists of eight singles matches between golfers with a handicap no higher than 10. The B League format, for golfers with a handicap between 11 and 18, features five four-ball games. The higher handicappers have an opportunity for competitive team golf as well with the Wagglers entering a team in the Dorset League.

Within the Club, competitions are open to all paid-up members with valid handicaps. The men play a medal on the first Saturday of the month from January to June and the third Sunday of the month from July to December. A stableford competition is held on the third Sunday of the month from January to June and the first Saturday of the month from July to December as well as midweek Stableford competitions in the summer. In addition, there are a number of friendly matches with other clubs in the district.

There are many trophies to play for, the most sought-after being the Club Championship which takes place in July. The Club hosts a county order of merit event at the end of July called the Weymouth Cup.

Mixed Competitions During the winter we have friendly Club mixed competitions and in the summer there are about 10 friendlies with other clubs in the district.

Seniors The seniors’ section is for those golfers aged 60 and over. To become a part of this active group, members have to pay the additional princely sum of £3 a year on top of their normal subscription!

events, the Club tries to ensure that everyone who wants to take part gets at least one match a year to play in. The seniors contest 12 Club competitions a year, all of importance, though the Club in 2011 did initiate its first seniors’ championship – held in July – which proved a great success.

There are 18 fixtures home and away from March to September with the majority of matches being against clubs in Dorset, such as Parkstone, Ferndown and Sherborne.

There are winter and summer knockouts, with the year’s silverware being handed out at the presentation dinner in January.

These are all very friendly occasions when winning and losing is secondary to rekindling old friendships that stretch back many years. Always popular

The seniors have a representative on the captain’s committee, so they have a voice at the Club at administrative level.

There is an annual friendly match against the ladies and once a year the group goes on a Picnic Day to Milton Abbey School, a private school between Dorchester and Blandford with which the Club has excellent relations and which has fantastic sporting facilities including its own nine-hole golf course.

Ladies The Ladies section are extremely active, playing their competitions on a Tuesday, with an alternative day available for working ladies.

Seven away and seven home friendly matches are playing against neighbouring clubs between April to October, the venues alternating each year.

They enter all the county competitions such as the team foursomes, a twoday event in June, as well as the Dorset knockout competitions the Humphreys Bowl and the Parkin Cup, both for teams of three.

Came Down also runs an Open event in June for teams of three as well as hosting two invitation days in August and September where each lady member at the Club is able to invite a lady from another club for a friendly game of golf in a sociable atmosphere.

Came Down’s ladies also play in several national competitions including the Ping Fourball Betterball event and the Coronation Foursomes, with qualifiers being held to decide who represents the Club.

Like the men, there is a medal and a stableford each month, as well as several impressive trophies to play for, with the Club Championship taking

place over 36 holes on the Tuesday following the August Bank Holiday. The ladies have a busy social calendar, enjoying a Christmas fair in November and a Christmas lunch at beginning of December. They are very keen bridge players, holding matches against other clubs and hosting a very popular and well-supported bridge evening in March which raises money for the lady captain’s chosen charity. The Lady Captain’s Day in July is another popular event which sees an excellent turn-out and the November medal is always played to support the British Legion Poppy Appeal.
