A Warm Welcome Welcome to Canterbury, a city that boasts a cathedral, a castle, an abbey, a river, a history as fascinating and as intense as a best-selling novel and one of the most outstanding inland golf courses in south-east England. Our course, which opened in 1927, was created by the renowned course designer Harry Colt, who lists Sunningdale, Wentworth and Rye among his many other masterpieces. Visitors and golfing societies are always hospitably received at our friendly club and are invited to use the many off-course facilities including the comfortable clubhouse and modern driving range. Spend some time with us and then explore this beautiful part of the world. Situated on the main route connecting the United Kingdom with the continent, Canterbury is ideally positioned to provide easy access to all major locations within the county of Kent. Almost everyone will have heard of Whitstable, renowned for its oysters. Then there’s Faversham, home to Britain’s oldest brewery; Ashford, with its designer outlet and international rail station; Broadstairs, celebrated for its association with Charles Dickens; the sandy beaches of popular holiday resorts Margate and Ramsgate; the ferry ports of Dover and Folkestone that offer swift passage to the continent; and Hythe, from where the famous miniature railway starts its journey across the Romney Marsh to Dungeness and back. All are within half-an-hour’s drive from Canterbury, through some of England’s most delightful countryside.

The City of Canterbury Canterbury plays host each year to thousands of visitors from all over the world. Many are attracted by the cathedral, originally constructed in the sixth century but rebuilt in 1070 after being destroyed by fire. For centuries the cathedral has been a place of pilgrimage following the murder there of its most famous archbishop, St Thomas Becket, in 1170. The journeys and experiences of some of these pilgrims are told in The Canterbury Tales, a collection of fictional stories written by the 14th century author, poet and diplomat, Geoffrey Chaucer, widely acknowledged as the father of modern English literature. For hundreds of years, the city was protected by a Roman wall and visitors could only enter through one of the gates that allowed access. Much of the wall still remains, as does the magnificent West Gate, with its twin towers, and the remains of a Norman castle. A few hundred yards from the West Gate, outside the city wall, is St Dunstan’s Church, where rests the head of St Thomas More, former Lord Chancellor who, in 1535, was beheaded as a traitor for refusing to recognise King Henry VIII as head of the Church of England. It was at the same church, four centuries earlier, in 1174, that King Henry II had changed into sackcloth before starting his walk of penitence to Becket’s tomb in the cathedral.

The City of Canterbury Continued Canterbury is served by the River Stour, which runs through the heart of the city, under the King’s Bridge, alongside the Weavers’ House – once home to Huguenot refugees – and past an old ducking stool, used in medieval times to identify witches in a most inappropriate manner. The Westgate Gardens provides a kaleidoscope of colour throughout the year and the huge Roman burial mound in the Dane John Gardens offers a panoramic view over the city wall. One of the most elegant cricket grounds in the country can also be found in Canterbury. The St Lawrence Ground has been the home of Kent County Cricket Club since 1842 and stages matches from April to September.

The Club’s History Canterbury Golf Club was founded in April 1926 and opened for play in May 1927 on 160 acres of land leased from the War Office. The land was inherited by the Ministry of Defence, who have re-affirmed the golf club’s occupancy by agreeing a longterm extension to the lease. The whole area is known as Scotland Hills but bears not the slightest relevance to the country north of Hadrian’s Wall. It is, in fact, a corruption of the name, Scolland, who was appointed abbot of St Augustine’s Abbey in 1072 and acquired for the abbey the land on which the course now stands. Founder members of Canterbury Golf Club commissioned renowned golf course architect Harry Colt to design what was described then as “one of the finest inland links in the country”. Initially, the course was laid out on land that was predominantly coloured by gorse and broom. However, over the years, large expanses of trees have appeared, some introduced by the vagaries of nature and others as part of a planned planting programme.
10
Canterbuty Golf Club
Consequently, the course has changed in character from heathland to woodland. The original thatched clubhouse burned down in October 1938, to be replaced by the present building which has been improved and extended. During the Second World War, a great portion of the course was commandeered by the Army for training and only 12 holes were available for play. After the War, the course was lengthened and altered. Three holes – the first, the fourth and the 16th – were remodelled and, in 1997, the 11th green was completely re-designed and rebuilt. Over the years, the odd bunker has disappeared and one or two new ones have been built but care has been taken to ensure that the course largely remains faithful to the Colt principles. The inevitable introduction of buggies came in 2003 and four years later, the club opened a new driving range and academy. More recently, broom and gorse were reintroduced to the 18th hole, adding colour and an extra element of danger.

Harry Colt, Renowned Course Designer Harry Colt, creator of the course at Canterbury, is one of golf’s best known and respected golf designers. Born in Highgate in 1869, Harry Shapland Colt was, in his student days, a talented cricketer, rugby player and rower. He attended Monkton Combe School before earning a place at Clare College, Cambridge, where he gained a degree and captained the university’s golf team. After graduating, Colt joined the Hastings law firm of Sayer & Colt and became a partner in 1894. While there, he helped design the course at Rye and the following year became the club’s secretary. In 1897, Colt was elected a founder member of the R&A’s Rules of Golf committee and four years later beat off 400 applicants to become first secretary, a post that carried a salary of £150 per annum.

Harry Colt, Renowned Course Designer Continued At Sunningdale, as at Rye, Colt displayed his creative artistry, adding a second course, the New, to William Park Jnr’s Old Course. Colt entered into a partnership, first with Dr Alister MacKenzie and then with Charles Alison and John Morrison, and between them, the four men were involved in the design, construction and modification of over 300 courses throughout the world, Colt himself being responsible for 115 of them, among them Canterbury, Royal Winchester, Camberley Heath, Wentworth (East and West), Stoke Poges, Rye, Moor Park, Muirfield, Royal Belfast, Royal Dublin, Formby, Hoylake and Sunningdale. He also designed courses in North and South America, throughout Europe and Australia, and in Africa. As a golfer, Colt was accomplished enough to play in both the Open and British Amateur Open Championships and was the first, and possibly only amateur golfer to become established as a course designer. Colt died, aged 82, in November 1951.

The Golf Course Few inland courses are able to match the variety and quality that Canterbury offers. Elevated tees, raised greens, steep climbs, sharp descents, twisting fairways and sloping lies are the features of this wonderful tree-lined layout. The opening drive must clear the brow of a hill and avoid the trees on the left and the undergrowth on the right to offer a chance of threatening the green with the second shot. The approach must be accurate and precisely weighted to avoid contours that can kick the ball towards the bunker on the left or return the ball to the fairway via the slope at the entrance. The par-three second hole demands 150 yards or more of carry across a deep ravine and the drive from the lowered third tee must negotiate a steep slope to find a blind fairway. And so the journey continues, twisting and turning, downhill and up, with breathtaking panoramic views over the course and surrounding countryside, accompanied throughout by the melodic strains of the myriad species of birds that have made Scotland Hills their home. The sixth and 13th tees are particularly memorable. From high above the fairway, the ball is launched into the ether before dropping onto the fairway far, far below. The downhill 10th hole is crossed by a ditch that can capture the most powerful drives and swallow a fair number of mis-hit second shots as well. The uphill par-three 11th is arguably the most difficult short hole on the course and is followed by the sloping and undulating 12th. Here, a flat lie for the approach is a rarity and there is little respite on the green, which slopes from back to front and a good deal beyond.

Hole By Hole Guide
Prepare for your visit to Canterbury by familiarising yourself with each hole over the coming pages and make the most of your round with our hole-by-hole guide. You can prepare yourself for the challenges that await, as well as pick up some invaluable playing tips from our head professionals, Paul Everard and Danny Maude. Hole 1, 472 yards, par 5 A long, straight drive can bring the green into range at this short par five. Anything left of centre is likely to see the ball kick left into the undergrowth. The front of the green slopes appreciably to the left. Hole 2, 166 yards, par 3 Hit the green at this innocuous-looking par three and you’ll be fine. If you’re short, the ball will roll back down to the base of the gully. Too far left, right or beyond the green can spell big problems. Hole 3, 385 yards, par 4 A blind tee shot from a lowered tee, with bunkers perfectly positioned to collect balls that stray to the right and thick vegetation beyond. No great perils thereafter. Hole 4, 376 yards, par 4 A right-hand dogleg at which long hitters can shape their drives around the trees to the right. Too far left or long will present a testing approach and possibly a sacrificed stroke. A lone rowan tree must be negotiated by those hugging the right of the fairway. Green slopes gently from back to front.
Hole 5, 155 yards, par 3 Miss the large green to the right and it needs a minor miracle to salvage par, depending on the pin placement. Hole 6, 385 yards, par 4 The ideal drive from this lofty tee is long and left for a short iron to the sunken green. The lie to the green will be obscured by trees for any drives that finish right of centre. Long, sloping entrance to the green carries many balls to the back fringe – and often further. Hole 7, 540 yards, par 5 Straightforward par five and flattered by stroke index six. Small copse just beyond driving length can be an obstacle but straight drives will have no problems. Large green with no hidden terrors. Hole 8, 140 yards, par 3 Shortest hole on the course. Take enough club to clear bunkers that guard right-hand entrance or run the ball in through the gap. Left-hand bunker can produce impossible lies. Flat green. Hole 9, 499 yards, par 5 Gentle dogleg right. Main hazard is large tree on right that encroaches into fairway just beyond midpoint. Play left side of fairway and consider extra club for uphill approach to green that slopes severely back to front.

Hole By Hole Guide Continued Hole 10, 453 yards, par 4 Downhill all the way off the tee to a ditch that bisects the hole and can be reached in favourable conditions or by long hitters. Green runs from right to left. Finish on the high side and it will be a struggle to get down in two – or three!
Hole 15, 392 yards, par 4 Tricky dogleg right. Fairway slopes right to left towards pair of bunkers but a drive too far right will block the view to a raised green that has subtle breaks and runs right to left and back to front.
Hole 11, 180 yards, par 3 A tough par three. Long and uphill, with a camber that kicks the ball towards the greenside bunker on the right. Steep slope to the green, which is domed and undulating.
Hole 16, 378 yards, par 4 Drive to right side of fairway to avoid kicking down slope and behind dense copse. Fairway slopes right to left but beware taking right-hand bunker for the line as ball often bounces straight – and in.
Hole 12, 365 yards, par 4 Stroke index one. A drive down the left from an elevated tee will provide a flat lie for the approach. Anywhere else will mean playing the ball above or below the feet. Green has a severe slope from back to front – and off! Pray for pin placement top left. Hole 13, 380 yards, par 4 Elevated tee from highest point of course to wide fairway. Avoid drifting too far right. Approach likely to play one club shorter and aim left as green has left to right camber. Hole 14, 321 yards, par 4 Good driving hole to wide fairway but uphill all the way. Second shot to blind green. Take a club extra as humps foreshorten distance to flat green.
Hole 17, 195 yards, par 3 Tough par three, especially into the wind. Uphill and long, with deep hollow to the left and large bunker right. Longer handicappers may benefit from playing short of trouble and using shot to good effect. Subtle breaks from everywhere on green. Hole 18, 490 yards, par 5 Drive from elevated tee to wide, inviting fairway. Second shot must avoid large area of gorse and broom on the right, bunker on right and another clump of gorse and broom on the right. Approach is uphill to a two-tier green guarded by bunkers left and right.

The Clubhouse The friendly, relaxed atmosphere of the clubhouse provides a comfortable setting in which to unwind after a round and to enjoy a refreshing drink and, perhaps, a bite to eat. Players can reflect on contrasting fortunes and the highs and lows of the contest while watching fellow golfers make their way towards the two-tiered final green. The glass-fronted clubhouse presents a pleasing view from the lounge and the dining room down the 18th fairway and across to the 1st tee. A varied selection of snacks, sandwiches and light meals can be ordered at the bar from a menu that is constantly reviewed and updated according to preferences and the ever-popular all-day breakfast is a popular choice. Meals can be served in the informal surroundings of the lounge or in the adjoining dining room. Alternatively, the patio at the front of the clubhouse affords a closer view of the action on the 18th green. The restaurant can comfortably seat 90 diners and can be reserved for private and corporate occasions. The changing rooms have lockers and showers, and clean towels are available for members and visitors. From the main clubhouse entrance, it is only a short walk to the professional’s shop, where a tee-time can be reserved, trolleys and buggies can be hired, scorecards are freely available and everything from clubs to golf bags, clothing and footwear, tees, balls and other accessories, or simply a cold drink or chocolate bar can be bought. The putting green immediately outside provides a final opportunity for a final practice before moving onto the first tee.

Membership at Canterbury Membership offers a combination of playing this beautiful course, entering competitions, use of the practice facilities, reduced rates at the well-equipped driving range and socialising at the clubhouse both informally and formally. We regularly play friendly fixtures throughout the year against other Kent clubs and the local Army regiments. Our Seniors’ and Ladies’ sections are amongst the most active in Kent and our ‘scratch’ team compete in the East Kent League and Invicta League and in 2011 won the Kent Amateur Foursomes, only the second time in the Club’s history. Our application process is made as convenient as possible with potential members being proposed by existing members followed by an informal interview with the Club Captain or a member of the board. The club will also consider an application for membership without a proposal as long as it is accompanied by a letter of recommendation and handicap certificate. Beginners are welcome at the club but we recommend a course of tuition with our club professionals prior to application. Although the membership continues to grow, we have a limited number of vacancies in all membership categories for male and female golfers. There is currently no joining fee and categories include the following: Full Membership Six and a half day Membership Five day Membership Students Juniors The above categories are sub-divided, please contact the office (01227 453532) for more detailed information. Subscription rates are reviewed annually with any increases being introduced on April 1. Golf Societies Canterbury Golf Club has a long tradition of hosting golf societies with many returning year after year. The challenging Harry Colt course is a good test of golfing skill which can be matched with formal and informal catering arrangements to suit all societies. The majority of golf societies are made up of experienced golfers holding current handicap certificates and membership at another club but we also cater for the infrequent but nevertheless competent golfers as well. The club offers a number of society packages to play 18, 27 or 36 holes with rates dictated by the size of the society playing on the day. Catering options available are varied and can be pre-booked and set to individual needs. They range from coffee and bacon rolls right through to a three-course lunch or dinner. By far the most popular package during the winter is a Full English Breakfast followed by 18 holes of golf. In order to book your society day or arrange and event, please contact the office to discuss your individual requirements by e-mail: secretary@canterburygolfclub.co.uk or telephone on 01227 453532.

Coaching and Tuition
(Tom, Paul, Ben, Danny)
Canterbury’s professional staff are PGA-trained and qualified to help golfers of all abilities, members and non-members, to improve their game and consequently enjoy it more. Beginners, novices, high and low handicappers, schools, youngsters – there are classes for all. These can be group sessions or individual classes. Whether it is a minor adjustment or a major problem that needs attention, the pros are best equipped to identify the cause and to provide a solution. And their beginners’ or taster programmes ensure that newcomers to golf are given the best possible introduction to the sport. Starter classes are held at the driving range, on the practice area and on the putting green before progressing on to the course. Personal tuition mainly takes place in the pros’ bays at the driving range. The pros have all the latest training aids at their disposal but it is not simply equipment and technique that influence the standard a golfer can achieve. Fitness, diet, physique, mental attitude and relaxation routines all effect performance and the pros at Canterbury can provide information and guidance in these subjects. To book a lesson or for further information, phone the Pro Shop on 01227 462865.

The Professional’s Shop The Professional’s Shop at Canterbury offers a comprehensive service to visitors and members. In addition to selling a range of seasonal clothing and footwear for men and women, the friendly staff will be pleased to chat about equipment options and offer advice on what offers the best value for a particular budget or what may suit or improve an individual’s game. An extensive range of competitively priced stock, ranging from woods, irons and putters to bags, shoes and balls, features all the major brands – Ping, TaylorMade, Mizuno, Callaway, Yonex and Footjoy. There are regular sales and special offers, especially with line clearances, and for those with a tighter budget, the shop also sells selected second-hand clubs. The PGA-qualified professionals can custom-fit new drivers, re-grip a set of clubs, change the cleats or studs in a pair of shoes or simply hire out a trolley or buggy, book a tee-time or take a green fee. A fleet of buggies is available for hire, as well as electric or pull trolleys and golf clubs. This, of course, is subject to the weather and course conditions. Advance booking is advisable to ensure availability. The Pro’s Shop is also the place to go for gift ideas or golfing novelties and if you need a drink or chocolate bar to take with you onto the course, there’s plenty of them, too. For tee reservations, golf lessons and any other golf-related enquiries, contact the pro shop on 01227 462865 or visit www.canterburygolfshopandacademy.co.uk.

Festival of Golf Every year, normally in the second half of July, Canterbury Golf Club stages a Festival of Golf, which is open to members of all clubs who possess a bona fide handicap. Previously known as Canterbury Open Week, the festival comprises four competitions on consecutive days. In recent years, these have been an individual Stableford, a four-ball betterball Stableford, a Texas Scramble and a team Stableford (best three scores from four). However, the organisers take into account comments and feedback from competitors before arranging the programme for the following year, so formats can change. Being blessed with beautiful weather, the 2011 festival proved popular and was hugely successful. For many visitors, the festival is regarded as a reunion as they return each year to renew friendships with past playing partners. Social events are often held as part of a day’s activities. Competitions can fill quickly or be oversubscribed, so players are advised to enter early. Entry forms and further details are available from the office (01227 453532). Information for visitors to Canterbury - For information on accommodation, entertainment, tourist attractions, events, restaurants, theatres, cinemas, maps and other services available in Canterbury, the coastal resorts of Herne Bay and Whitstable and the surrounding countryside, visit the Canterbury Tourism website at www. canterbury.co.uk or phone 01227 378100. Canterbury Golf Club works closely with the Abbots Barton Hotel (Best Western) in New Dover Road, Canterbury, and reduced golf rates are available for hotel guests and reduced hotel rates are available for visiting societies. Further information can be obtained from www.abbotsbartonhotel.com, by sending an e-mail to sales@abbotsbartonhotel.com or by telephoning 01227 760341.

Meet Our Dedicated Greenstaff Meet the men who are responsible for maintaining, repairing and improving the course and surrounds at Canterbury Golf Club. While most club members are still tucked up in bed, the six-strong team of greenkeepers, led by head greenkeeper Mick Garrett, will already be busy preparing the course for the day’s activities and carrying out the many additional tasks that are necessary to present the course in its best condition. Most of them have been employed at Canterbury for many years. They’re a friendly bunch of lads, so don’t be afraid to give them a wave or exchange a few words as you make your way around the course. A Paradise for Wildlife Canterbury’s golf course is a real delight for nature lovers. At various times throughout the year, a wide variety of animals and birds can be seen or heard or both. Rabbits and squirrels may be regarded by many as pests but they can provide added pleasure for people who are just out for a stroll on the edges of the fairways. Those who are lucky may catch a glimpse of the black rabbit that lives close to the road to the 10th tee or, perhaps, an albino squirrel that shows itself on all-too-rare occasions. Both need to be alert to their chief predator, the fox, who lopes through the bracken and long grass and, occasionally, across a fairway. In recent years, the pheasant population has grown enormously. Where there was none 20 years ago, they are now a common sight and there is no mistaking their throaty screech. The finches, robins and tits – great, coal and blue – are distinguished members of nature’s choir at Canterbury, as are the mistle thrush and collared dove, and there are cameo contributions from the nightingale and wren. Every so often, a kestrel will put in an appearance, hovering high on the lookout for potential prey, while the colourful jay and the green or the lesser spotted woodpecker, may also attract attention. The best time to enjoy what the golf course has to offer is the twilight, when nature has most of the course to itself.
