C
helmsford Golf Club is one of the oldest traditional, private members’ clubs in the county and celebrated its centenary in 1993. The first nine-hole course on Galleywood Common used the existing Horse and Groom public house as a clubhouse. The present course was formed on parcels of land acquired over the years but started in 1910 on land originally leased from Sir David Gooch. When the move took place
History
a new clubhouse was constructed on the present site at a cost of £400. This building has been enlarged and modified (and modernised) to form the present changing rooms, dining facilities and administrative offices. Two of the game’s leading course designers had a hand in the make-up of the course you play today. James Braid drew up the original 18-hole layout having visited the Widford site in 1910, just months after winning his fifth Open title. The current
look of our modern Championship course owes much to the later work of Harry Colt. Following numerous changes the current course layout was formed in 1936 following the sale of land to the county council for the building of St. John’s Hospital and the concurrent acquisition of Thrift Wood. Chelmsford is very proud of its history: members still play for longstanding Club trophies some of which are more than 100 years old.
7
I have loved my time at Chelmsford GC and look forward to spending many more happy years here.
O
ur Harry Colt-inspired course is regarded as one of the finest in the county and a pleasure to play thanks to the efforts of our dedicated greenkeeping staff.
8
The well-designed layout may only measure 5,996 yards from the medal tees but provides a good test of golf for players of all abilities, as the Standard Scratch Score of 69 against the par of 68 proves.
Accurate approach shots are also important in order to leave the ball on the correct side of the hole. Chelmsford’s ultimate protection is the fast and sloping greens.
The course is in excellent condition throughout the year with its majestic pines and oaks, but these are the same trees that will punish the wayward drive. Straightness off the tee is vital to posting a good score, as is good course management.
The greens can run above 10 on the Stimpmeter even in spring if the weather has been good and on the 1st hole if you spin your wedge shot too much the ball can come back some 40 yards. Members obviously learn to cope with this and place their shots accordingly, but it is
The Course
The 7th hole
likely to catch out unwary visitors. The course has many special holes, and it is difficult to pick out only a select few that would be considered particular highlights. The par-3 4th is regarded as the signature hole by members. It is set in what was Thrift Wood and the colours, particularly in springtime, make it a truly spectacular setting for a golf hole. It is easy to forget about the job at hand but be careful, because the green slopes severely and you
can easily putt off the green if you get on the wrong side of the hole. The 7th, a par-4 playing 429 yards off the medal tees, is an outstanding golf hole. When you stand on the tee, looking over the fairway that rolls from right to left, it is reminiscent of Woburn with the fir trees in the distance.
The 15th is another par 3 that should be appreciated for its beauty but treated with caution by any golfer looking to protect his or her score near the end of the round. Set in a valley, it is a delightfully picturesque hole but one where you are glad to take a par, savour the view and move on.

helmsford is renowned as a friendly Club with a wide and varied membership. There are many established groups ready to welcome you who play on a regular basis throughout the week and at weekends so you will never be short of having someone to play with. We pride ourselves on having an active membership with a full schedule of competitions for men, ladies and juniors aimed at players of all standards. There
10
is also a busy and varied social calendar with events for all of the family. Membership is open to all upon application – you do not need to know anyone already at the Club. We make a point of ensuring new members are made to feel a part of the Club from the day they join. Immediately they feel comfortable and quickly find themselves part of a regular group of friends. With groups playing on a casual basis every day, finding playing partners is never a problem.
Becoming a Member
Competitive golfers can achieve an official CONGU handicap recognised worldwide, and play in regular competitions both with their fellow members and against other clubs. Chelmsford is a traditional members’ Club run for the benefit of the members, with the members playing a key role in the future direction of the Club. A not-forprofit organisation, any surplus income is invested in ensuring that the Club, the course and our facilities continue to
remain among the best that Essex has to offer. We welcome applications for membership from existing golfers new to the area, golfers from other local clubs, and keen beginners - men, women and children from five years old upwards. Our aim is to provide excellent golfing facilities and to encourage youngsters from the local community to enjoy the game of golf. Whatever your background there is a
membership category suited to you. Full Adult Membership By far the most popular membership at Chelmsford, allowing unlimited play seven days a week, the chance to play in all Club competitions and maintain a handicap and to use of all Club facilities and attend all functions. Under-30s Full Membership The Club seeks to retain a broad section of golfers and offers a discounted
membership for Under 30s. Membership is available at 50 per cent of the annual joining fee and annual subscription fees. Associate Membership Local residents may apply to become (non-golfing) Social Members. This entitles them to use the clubhouse, including bar and catering facilities, and to bring guests. A special green fee package can be attached to this membership type. Subject to availability.
11
Trial Membership A ‘taster’ membership to experience what the Club has to offer. A one-year or threemonth trial membership allows use of the course and clubhouse facilities, with the opportunity to join the Club either during at or at the end of the trial. Further details can be found later in this brochure. Student Membership A student membership is available with subscription fees based on whether the member came through our Cadets scheme.
12
Cadet Membership Chelmsford has a thriving group of young golfers and offers great rates to juniors wishing to become part of our Club. Again, further details can be found later in this brochure. Still wavering over whether to take the plunge? We would be delighted to give you a tour of the Club and its facilities under no obligation. Or pop up for a drink in the clubhouse and ask our members why they think Chelmsford Golf Club is so special. Rarely will you hear people speak so passionately about the club to which they belong.

G
olf can be such a rewarding game on so many levels. It can develop into a sporting passion that can last a lifetime, delight at times and infuriate at others and can lead to the forging of lasting friendships both on and off the course.
Golf clubs have a reputation – justified on occasion, unfortunately – for being stuffy unwelcoming places stuck in the past. Not Chelmsford. Yes, tradition is a big part of our historic Club, but we move with the times and nothing would give us greater pleasure than introducing new people to our Club and to the game of golf.
Set foot inside our Club and the one thing that will strike you above all else is the rapport between fellow members and between members and staff. There is a warmth you will find here that we feel you will experience at few clubs.
Two schemes have been introduced in recent years aimed at those who might be considering joining us here at one of Essex’s premier clubs. There is a Starter scheme for those new to the game and a Trial Membership scheme for those who have played before but never as a member at Chelmsford.
14
Starter Scheme The aim of the Starter scheme is to introduce new men and ladies to golf, help them develop the necessary skills to play the course while also having a good understanding of the laws of the game and etiquette. Having reached the necessary levels of aptitude we hope they will then become full members. Support is key in this process: support from fellow members, with a dedicated mentor and support from our professional team and staff. Unlike at other establishments beginners are not left to their own devices but made to feel they are part of the Club.
Starter and Trial Memberships
Key features of the membership include. • Starters must be accompanied by a playing member of the Club while using the course prior to obtaining a CONGU handicap. • Having obtained a handicap they may then play the course unsupervised. • At any time during the starter scheme, candidates may apply for Full playing membership of the Club, subject to having attained a handicap and with the approval of the professionals. • Starters may use the course after 12pm
on weekdays and Sundays and after 4pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays. • A Starter will not be able to enter any Club competitions until attaining Full status. • At the end of the first year if you wish to apply for full membership and are successful a 30 per cent reduction will be made against the current joining fee and 15 per cent at the end of the second year.
because of other commitments or who are new to the area, we have a special Trial Membership. This enables the prospective member to get a feel for what Chelmsford is about and whether it is the Club for them, without having to pay the joining fee. If you don’t like what you see, simply walk away with our best wishes. But with a beautiful course, friendly membership and outstanding facilities prepare to be hooked, like so many others before you!

We offer two Trial Membership options, one lasting three months and the other for a whole year. There are similar benefits to both, including: • Play permitted either seven days a week (three-month Trial Membership) or six days a week (excludes Saturdays) for the 12-month option. • Full golfing rights, including the opportunity to introduce a reasonable number of guests at the member’s concessionary rate.
• The right to play in all Club competitions once the applicant’s handicap has been accepted. • Full rights in the clubhouse, bar and dining facilities including the issue of a bar card allowing discounts on certain food and drinks. • Active encouragement to enter into the social side of the Club. • Interview at the end of the trial period to discuss full membership.
• If the application is successful, either an allowance made against the joining fee or the ability to spread the joining fee on preferential terms, depending on the terms of respective Trial Membership. • Only one trial period will be allowed by any one person (new members only). • Application forms can be downloaded from our website, www.chelmsfordgc. co.uk. e regard golf societies as something of a speciality of ours here at Chelmsford and can guarantee a good time for visiting groups both out on the course and in the clubhouse. If great golf, good food and accommodating hosts are your ingredients for a successful golf day, then you have come to the right place.
Flexibility is the key to the success of our society days at Chelmsford and the reason why many groups come back year after year.
Your day will be tailored just for you and can comprise 18, 27 or 36 holes with reserved tee-times for parties of 12 or more to suit your travel requirements.
Yes we can offer set packages if it makes life easier for society organisers, but our view is that it is your golf day, not ours. So come to us with a wishlist for your perfect day and we will do everything we can to tick all the boxes.
The course is a true test, but unlike some of the modern layouts, not so long that if favours only the big hitters. All areas of your golf game are examined in equal measure and we have some lovely par threes – including the last – for nearest the pin competitions.

The catering is held in high regard by our members and we can keep you fed and watered throughout the day, whether you want a bacon roll or full English breakfast to get you on your way, a light lunch or a three-course sit-down meal.

Really pleased that I have joined, one of the best aspects is how friendly the club is and the ability to join in with the swindles.

f you have a Corporate Golf Day in mind, we have a gem of a course with challenges for all levels of golfer. The greens are undulating and well protected by bunkers and keeping the ball in the fairway is a must. For the higher handicap player, the length of the course is not intimidating which allows all golfers to have a chance of winning.
The clubhouse has a balcony which overlooks the 18th green, a favourite for a nearest the pin challenge. Here players gather for some banter waiting for the last groups to come in. The team at Chelmsford Golf Club look forward to organising your day from start to finish with bespoke packages available to make your day a success. Here is just one example of how your day might run:
• 8.00am onwards – Arrive for coffee and breakfast and register in the clubhouse. • You will be met by a member of the Professional staff and a representative of our Front of House team who will be your main contacts for the day. • Giveaways with your logo can be organised and given out to each player or you, of course, can bring your own. • 9.00am onwards – Tee Off on the first hole for a team game of 9 holes with a

challenge on the 15th hole par 3 into the valley is popular and is a great talking point after play.
• 11.00am onwards – Players will arrive back in the clubhouse for a lunch of perhaps soup and sandwiches or ham, egg and thick-cut chips.
• 6.00pm onwards – Players arrive back in the clubhouse for dinner and a prize-giving in the restaurant area of the clubhouse which one of the Professionals will be on hand to assist.
• 12.30pm onwards – Back to the golf course for 18 holes and a Betterball Stableford with prizes from the shop for winning groups, along with longest drive and nearest the pin challenges. A Pro
• All of the players’ cards can be printed out for you and the computer system we have will record all of the scores and calculate the winners of the day. This
will leave you time to socialise with your guests and enjoy your day. We can also make the results available for viewing on the big screen television in the dining room. • If you have some guests with you that are non-golfers, we can organise tuition for them covering short game and some fun competitions and timing the lessons so they join everyone for the meals throughout the day. he Head Professional at Chelmsford Golf Club is Mark Welch, who has been with us since 1998. Mark took over from Dennis Bailey, who himself was the professional here for 39 years, meaning Chelmsford has had only two Club professionals in a period spanning more than the past half a century. The bond between the professional and the Club has always been a strong one, and Mark has become extremely popular with the members.
Mark specialises in custom-fitting golf equipment, retailing and coaching golfers at all levels and ages. He plays occasionally in regional tournaments but spends more time playing golf with members. He trained at the Open venue Princes Golf Club on the Kent coast but originates from Chester in the North West of England. The assistant professionals at Chelmsford are Lucy Clarke and Stephen Townsend. Lucy has built an excellent reputation with her teaching skills, especially with the Junior section where she has established a youth academy and from this, a shortened
version of the golf course has been set up, where the younger players can learn the game. Stephen has gained expertise in the fitting of golf equipment and uses technology such as the ipad to analyse golf swings and short game techniques to help golfers improve their game. Our golf team have the enviable reputation of being one of the best in the area and their well-stocked shop provides members and visitors with a wide choice of leading brands of equipment, clothing and accessories. The shop also has a dedicated website which is www.customfitgolfshop.co.uk. Continue on page 37

Golf balls, as is the case with all the other stock, are competitively priced and the popular makes from Titleist and Srixon are all available. The top priority is always customer satisfaction, so if you are seeking a particularly club or piece of equipment that is not in stock, speak to Mark who will do his best to source it for you. helmsford Golf Club has created a great environment where junior golfers can thrive by providing them opportunities regardless of any age, gender or background and allowing them to participate and develop their talent to whatever level they aspire to.
To be a Junior Member, you must be under the age of 18 years at the start of the Club year. We have four levels of cadets with a development programme to assist juniors in progressing to senior level, and a dedicated Junior Organiser to look after their well-being and represent their interests on the Club’s committee. The Club is proud of its record of developing its younger players and over the years we have seen many juniors leave this Club and go on to becoming seasoned professionals. A number of competitions are run throughout the year and Chelmsford fields
Juniors
a team in the Essex Youth Shield, giving our younger golfers valuable competitive experience against their peers at an early age. Junior improvement programmes can be created to suit the needs and aspirations of each individual and there are also beginner classes aimed at teaching children the basics of the swing and etiquette to enable them to get out and enjoy the game as quickly as possible. Learning sound fundamentals at an early age means many years of frustration on the course later in life can be avoided!
