Welcome Chelmsford Golf Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in Essex, having celebrated its centenary in 1993. We are a traditional members’ club, but visitors are always made to feel most welcome. The course, which measures 5,996 yards off the white tees, with a par of 68, is always in good condition and offers some of the finest greens in the county. Chelmsford is a popular destination for visiting golf societies, who are drawn to the quality of our course, the friendliness of our staff and our members and the outstanding catering that is available seven days a week. If you are looking to join a club as a member, there are few better choices. Competitive golf abounds, with frequent matches against other clubs and a host of prestigious trophies to be battled for in our many club events. A change of pace is offered in the form of daily roll-ups or swindles where the spirit may be more light-hearted but the desire to do well no less intense. Mark Welch, our PGA professional, and his team are widely regarded and sought after for their expert golf tuition, which features some of the latest technology to help beginners and more advanced players improve their game. We offer a level of service and commitment seldom found and we will make every effort to ensure that you will want to return. Come and pay us a visit, you will not be disappointed.

History Chelmsford Golf Club is one of the oldest traditional, private members’ clubs in the county and celebrated its centenary in 1993. From modest beginnings, this gem of a parkland course is now recognised as one of the best in the whole of Essex and is a must for the discerning golfer. The first nine-hole course on Galleywood Common used the existing Horse and Groom public house as a clubhouse. The present course was formed on parcels of land acquired over the years but started in 1910 on land originally leased from Sir David Gooch. When the move took place a new clubhouse was constructed on the present site at a cost of £400! This building has been enlarged and modified (and modernised) to form the present changing rooms, dining facilities and administrative offices. Following numerous changes the current course layout was formed in 1936 following the sale of land to the county council for the building of St. John’s Hospital and the concurrent acquisition of Thrift Wood. The present hospital site was sold for housing development in 2010. Although the club is more than one hundred years old, 2011 offers the opportunity to celebrate a second centenary – that of the opening of the course on its present site. Chelmsford is very proud of its history: the first De Zoete Cup, for instance, was played for in 1895 by twelve players when the club boasted 68 gentlemen and 21 lady members. All our golfing sections are as competitive and as well supported as ever and indeed the De Zoete Cup is still contested to this day.

7

The course Our course is always in excellent condition and a warm welcome always awaits the visitor or member in the clubhouse. In these days of superior technology, it is perhaps easy to underestimate a layout that measures less than 6,000 yards (it plays 5,996 yards from the medal tees), but this would be a mistake. Chelmsford is far from a pushover and with a Standard Scratch Score of 69 - one more than its par - it provides a true test to golfers of all abilities. Better players tend to profit most on the par-5s, but our course has only one of these and with the five par-3s being far from easy holes, only the most skilful shots will afford the opportunity for birdie. The course looks a picture throughout the year with its majestic pines and oaks, but these are the same trees that will punish the wayward drive, for straightness off the tee is a pre-requisite, as is the oft-neglected art of course management. Having warned you off the driver, it should however be noted longer tee shots enable you to have a shorter distance in to the green, enabling you to better position your approach to the side of the flag you need to be on. Chelmsford’s ultimate protection, you see, is the lightning-fast and sloping greens which are not dissimilar to what you see at Augusta National for the Masters, with golfers discovering that identifying the correct line on some holes can result in them having to putt nearly sideways.

8

The greens can run above 10 on the Stimpmeter even in spring if the weather has been good and on the 1st hole if you spin your wedge shot too much the ball can come back some 40 yards. Members obviously learn to cope with this and place their shots accordingly, but it is likely to catch out unwary visitors. The course has many special holes, and it is difficult to pick out only a select few that would be considered particular highlights. The par-3 4th is regarded as the signature hole by members. It is set in what was Thrift Wood and the colours, particularly in springtime, make it a truly spectacular setting for a golf hole. It is easy to forget about the job at hand but be careful, because the green slopes severely and you can easily putt off the green if you get on the wrong side of the hole. The 7th, a par-4 playing 429 yards off the medal tees, is an outstanding golf hole. When you stand on the tee, looking over the fairway that rolls from right to left, it is reminiscent of Woburn with the fir trees in the distance. The 15th is another par 3 that should be appreciated for its beauty but treated with caution by any golfer looking to protect his or her score near the end of the round. Set in a valley, it is a delightfully picturesque hole but one where you are glad to take a par, savour the view and move on

Professional and the Pro Shop The Head Professional at Chelmsford Golf Club is Mark Welch, who has been with us since 1998. Mark took over from Dennis Bailey, who himself was the professional here for 39 years, meaning Chelmsford has had only two club pros in a period spanning more than the past half a century. The bond between the professional and the club has always been a strong one, and Mark has become extremely popular with the members. Mark specialises in custom-fitting clubs and teaching. He plays occasionally in regional tournaments but spends more time playing golf with members. He trained at the Open venue Princes Golf Club but originates from Chester in the North West of England. The assistant professional at Chelmsford is Lucy Clarke, who is in the second year of the PGA’s much-respected three-year training scheme upon completion of which she will become a fully-qualified professional. Lucy has built an excellent reputation with her teaching skills, especially with the junior section where she has established a series of group sessions to improve all age ranges. Our golf team have the enviable reputation of being one of the best in the area and their well-stocked shop provides members and visitors with a wide choice of leading brands of equipment, clothing and accessories.

Professional and the Pro Shop continued Mark is a firm believer in the benefits of a golfer having a set of clubs that matches their physical make-up and their swing characteristics and is able to offer custom-fitting for Titleist, Cobra and Callaway. Measurements are taken to determine the correct length, lie and loft for the individual player and these details are then sent to the manufacturer, who produce a purpose-built set of clubs to those specifications. Having custom-fit equipment should improve ball-striking and accuracy and result in what all golfers crave – more consistency. Better play in turn breeds more confidence and from there anything is possible. Mark stocks Odyssey and Scotty Cameron putters and Titleist’s popular range of Vokey wedges, together with a vast range of Footjoy shoes, Footjoy waterproofs, Sun Mountain golf bags and Masters golf accessories. Look the part on the course with clothing from new golf manufacturer Func Factory and stylish garments from AHEAD and Glenmuir bearing the Chelmsford Golf Club logo. Comfort is always important out on the course and the pro shop stocks the popular Under Armour golfing base layers, together with MotoCaddy trolleys to take the strain out of carrying a bag around the course. Golf balls, as is the case with all the other stock, are competitively priced and the popular makes from Titleist, Callaway and Srixon are all available. The top priority is always customer satisfaction, so if you are seeking a particularly club or piece of equipment that is not in stock, speak to Mark who will do his best to source it for you. For more details, phone the Pro Shop on 01245 257079 or e-mail Mark.Welch@foremostgolf.com 13

Tuition If you are struggling with your golf game or feel you are not improving at the rate you had been hoping, then a golf lesson or series of lessons can often be the solution. Chelmsford is blessed with two gifted instructors, whose instruction is highly sought-after and who are able to make use of the latest technology if appropriate. Nothing is left to chance, with the GASP system of golf swing analysis software available, together with the popular Explanar, a piece of equipment that can be used to help ingrain the correct movements to achieve a correct and repeatable golf swing. It is not compulsory to use both systems and advice will be given for the suitability of each with your swing. Lessons are available seven days a week and are available on some evenings in the summer. The team have recently added a new indoor studio to the Professional Shop at Chelmsford which means you can improve your swing whatever the weather. The swing can be recorded so that you can see your faults and learn how to correct them and there is the option to have the video file e-mailed to you as a reminder of the lesson. Video can also be used for short game analysis and with a putting green outside the shop, all areas of the game can be tackled. For more details, phone the Pro Shop on 01245 257079 or e-mail Mark.Welch@foremostgolf.com

The Sunday Times put solar PV panels as one of the top 5 investments for making 10% on your savings. Let the sun start saving you energy and making you money

A 2.53 kWp Solar PV system costing approximately £10,000 (inc VAT) will produce in the region of 2109 kWhr per year. Playing sections Chelmsford has a very active and thriving golf membership who like nothing better than to make the most of the beautiful course at their disposal. Being a club well into our second century of existence, the competitions open to members are steeped in history and tradition. There are well in excess of 40 trophies available to men and ladies, competing either as singles or pairs, so ours is certainly an ideal choice for someone who relishes the pursuit of golfing silverware. In recent years the club has enjoyed success in many county and national competitions including notable wins in the Thornton Cup, Leslie Wood and the Men’s Seniors whilst the ladies have excelled in the premier events organised by the Essex Ladies County Golf Association: Bronze Shield, Silver Trophy and Harris Bowl, and entered 2011 looking to win the Silver Shield for a record eighth year in succession. While the opportunities to excel in the heat of battle are numerous, Chelmsford Golf Club takes equal pride in the fact that its members play socially every chance they get with swindles or roll-ups of one description or another taking place on most days.

Playing sections continued Men’s section Competitions for trophies and cups generally take place on Saturdays and Sundays. Swindle groups meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, generally tee-ing off at 11am, while the Tuesday Boys is another informal gathering or swindle. There is also a lunchtime swindle on a Thursday and other noncompetitive play on Saturdays. The men compete in three prestigious Essex Golf Union competitions, the Thornton Challenge Cup, the Leslie F Wood Championship and the Senior Team Championship. The format of the first two competitions involves a ten-man team playing matchplay, Ryder Cup-style, with five foursomes in the morning followed by ten singles in the afternoon. The Senior Team is an eleven man team matchplay event for any members over 55 years of age. Ladies section Competition day for medals and trophies is generally Tuesday, though these do occasionally take place on Saturdays. The ladies are strong supporters of county competitions and always do the club proud, underlined by their recent impressive record. They enter the the Silver Shield (scratch handicap, seven players), Bronze Shield (19+ handicap, seven players), the Silver Trophy (10+ handicap, five players) and the Harris Bowl (no handicap limit, five players). These follow a league format, with the most successful teams going through to an end-of-season knockout. The ladies also play in the Munro Foursomes - an 18-hole foursomes matchplay knockout competition.

Playing sections continued Veterans section The Retired Members’ Group (RMG) generally play friendly matches against other clubs on Mondays or Fridays. Many friendships have been forged with our golfing neighbours over the years and this is as much a social event as a chance to play golf, with a sit-down meal following the match. Cadets section Chelmsford has an outstanding cadets section, which is wellrespected in the area. Our youngsters play county competitions in a mini-league format followed by a knockout phase for the top-ranked clubs. Many cadets have gone on to make a living in the game, either playing or as a PGA professional. Chelmsford is very proud of its golfing heritage and does everything it can to help its up-and-coming golfers. For instance, in 2009 we held a Skins tournament for the four professionals attached to the club, Lloyd Kennedy, John Tarling, Brett Taylor and Andy Pestell to help with their expenses for the coming year. Lloyd currently competes on the Challenge Tour, while one of the recent crop of talented young players looking to follow in his footsteps is Jack Hiluta. A former England junior captain, Jack earned a golf scholarship to the United States and 2011 sees him complete his senior year at the University of South Alabama.

Retired Homeowners: your home could be sold to fund care home fees “We have worked hard all our lives to leave something for our children and grandchildren. Why should the Local Authority get it all?” If you have to go into care and you have assets that total more than £23,250 (including the value of your home), you will have to fund your care in full. A care home could cost £500-£800 a week or more. The reality is that your children could end up with very little. Although care might seem only a distant possibility right now, there are important steps you should take now to protect your home.

Married Couples If you and your husband/wife currently have ‘Mirror Wills’ or ‘Joint Wills’ you risk leaving your share of your home to your husband/wife for it simply to be swallowed up in care home fees. A legal trust arrangement within your Will could save your family tens of thousands of pounds and ensure your hard earned wealth passes to those you choose.

Widowed/Single The options available to you to protect your home are fewer and it is vital you act now.

“I’m protected, I’ve signed my house over to my children” Have you considered what will happen if your child/children experience marital difficulties and your home forms part of a divorce settlement? What will happen if your child/ children experience financial difficulties and enter bankruptcy? Did you know that Capital Gains Tax is payable on second homes, meaning a potentially huge tax bill when your home is eventually sold by your children? It’s not too late to put it right – contact us today for advice.

Your day will be tailored just for you and can comprise 18, 27 or 36 holes with reserved tee-times for parties of 12 or more to suit your travel requirements. Your time with us will be enhanced by our usual friendly service and an obliging PGA host, with every need taken care of, including the obligatory nearest-the-pin and longest drive markers. Buggies are available for hire and we have a voucher scheme for your prizes. Your chosen meals will be served in a private dining room and the lounge bar offers an extensive range of beers, wines and soft drinks. Day visitor packages are available for groups up to 40 players at advantageous green fee rates. There are only a limited number of opportunities, so book early to avoid disappointment. Clubhouse Relax and unwind after your round with a meal and a drink served by our accommodating and friendly staff in the wellappointed clubhouse. There are two bars, which are both always well stocked with a wide range of wines, beers, spirits and non-alcoholic beverages. The main bar is the more formal of the two, along with the casual bar where players do not need to change after a round. This has Sky Sports so you can follow all the latest sporting action. When the weather is good there is nothing better than to sit out on the balcony with a cooling drink and marvel at the local scenery or watch the players as they look to close out their round in style on the 18th green. There is a restaurant area that can be partitioned off from the bars for functions and special occasions. The kitchen opens at 9am and closes at 6pm, though it can remain open after that time for pre-booked golfing groups. The catering at Chelmsford is outstanding, you will never go hungry and a selection of wholesome, tasty food is available throughout the day. Favourites include ham egg and chips, toasted sandwiches, cold sandwiches, lasagne and a selection of chef’s specials.

Social With excellent facilities and a sociable, friendly group of members, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the off-course benefits of being a member at Chelmsford Golf Club. It would not be unfair to say that many of the social events held here revolve around golf, or food, or ideally, a combination of both together. Friday Fever is the name given to our dining event usually held on the last Friday of the month which is highly popular and very well supported by members. We make the most of our excellent catering team and there are Sunday lunches most weeks of the year, which feature a carvery or a fish or vegetarian alternative. December is always an eagerly-anticipated month, as the party season gets into full swing. We have a children’s party early in the month, followed by a club Christmas party and another get-together on the final day of the month to welcome in the New Year. Burns Night is celebrated in style and is always a highly-popular and very well supported event held around January 25, the date of the late poet’s birth. The annual dinner dance – giving the chance for members to dress up in their finery - is held at one of the premier establishments in Chelmsford, normally in late February.
