Club History
History surrounding golf reflects how mother nature and human behaviour have developed this wonderful game since 1450 to all parts of the world.
The golf club officially started on 11th March 1890, which makes it the oldest club in Oxfordshire. History surrounding golf reflects how mother nature and human behaviour have developed this wonderful game since 1450 to all parts of the world. In 1242, the Earl of Arundel and Lord of the Demense of Chipping Norton, gave 500 acres of land to Chipping Norton. By 1890 only about 35 acres was still owned by the town which was known as The Common and that was where the golf course was established. In 1907 the club moved to the Southcombe site and rented land for the course. Ladies as well as gentlemen have always played an important role in the club, the club minutes of 1932 refer to a ladies’ committee. In October 1934 a committee report stated the club held various discussions with the owner of the land, Mr.C.Penford, and he agreed to sell 59 acres for £600. The report explained how if the club owned the land many improvements of a permanent and constructive nature could be made. The members supported this and the land was bought. In 1944, during the war, the course was ploughed up for the planting of cereals and replanted in 1948. The direction for playing the course was reversed, as the back nine holes are today. Apart from the 18th hole, the last nine greens are the same as the earlier ones. Although there were only nine holes, golfers would play them twice, giving an 18-hole score. In 1955 an extra nine set of tees were laid which fundamentally made it an 18-hole course.

History Continued...
The competitive side of the club continued to expand throughout the club’s history.
The competitive side of the club continued to expand throughout the club’s history. The number of playing members has increased over the years from about 40 in 1897 to 696 in 2007 and so have competitions. Records up to 1906, for all categories of players, show five Major competitions plus Monthly Medals. By 1950 ten Majors plus Monthly Medals were contested, by 1980 20 plus Monthly Medals and in 2007 80 competitions including Monthly Medals. Two of these are dated 1907 and one 1924, also there is an 1895 silver Monthly Medal. In 1984 extra land was bought for a new nine holes and the club now has a complete 18-hole course. The latest acquisition is land for a driving range and a junior academy. Various clubhouses have been built throughout the years, the last was in 1987. Further details of our history can be seen on the club’s website www.chippingnortongolfclub.com
Chipping Norton Golf Club 9
The Course
Chosen as one of the Top 3 Courses in Oxfordshire by National Club Golfer Magazine
Chipping Norton has a splendid undulating 18-hole golf course which stretches to 6,316 yards off the championship tees and plays to a par of 71. Set out in two loops, it comprises tree-lined fairways in a delightful setting, offering a challenging but never unfair test to golfers of all abilities. The River Glymme rises close by and is the source of a number of our interesting ‘water features’, including a delightful par 3 played over a well stocked lake, home to a number of golf balls! The course is maintained to a very high standard and, because it occupies some of the highest ground in the Cotswolds, drainage is excellent, which practically guarantees play all year round. Ours is a thinking man’s course, so be prepared to test your powers of recovery if you are the sort of player who automatically reaches for the driver on every tee. The trees ensure that crooked shots are punished, so even if you are not having to chip out sideways after a wayward drive an errant tee shot will likely leave you out of position. The greens are always in very good condition. Some of them are undulating, certainly, but they provide a fair test and are a pleasure to putt on. We have an ongoing commitment to making the golfing experience at Chipping Norton the best it can possibly be. If you have never played here you should, we feel it will be a visit which lives long in the memory.

The Course - Hole by Hole A visit to Chipping Norton Golf Club is something to savour. We promise you will be in for a treat and to ensure you enjoy your round to the fullest, take a moment to read our course guide with helpful tips from Stewart Davies, our Head Professional, to ensure you score well and avoid the pitfalls which lie in wait for the unwary. Hole 1, 455 yards, par 4 A tough long opening hole with trees and bunkers right and out of bounds left. Try to favour the right hand side of the fairway. Play the second shot slightly left and it will feed into the green. Hole 2, 370 yards, par 4 Another toughie with a well placed fairway bunker and a fairway that slopes towards it! The second shot is uphill and will play slightly longer so one extra club may be needed. Hole 3, 152 yards, par 3 A picturesque par 3 and the first of our four short holes. The wind can be deceiving here and it can play anything from a short iron to a fairway wood. Take plenty of club otherwise the lake awaits! Hole 4, 305 yards. par 4 Don’t be deceived as it looks straightforward enough but beware the out of bounds left and well placed bunker to the right. The second shot is to a well protected green that slopes from right to left.
13
The Course - Hole by Hole Continued... Hole 5, 483 yards par 5 Drive slightly left of the fairway bunker. Don’t take too much on for your second shot. Be careful of the water. Hole 6, 492 yards, par 5 A long hole that plays uphill and often into the wind. Be careful of the hidden bunker for your second shot. Miss the green left or right and the bunkers await. Seems straightforward but often a card wrecker! Hole 7, 395 yards, par 4 A dog-leg left. The bunker on the right is visible from the tee and catches many out. The second shot is all downhill to a tricky green. Don’t go long as all sorts of trouble lies over the green. Par is a very good score on this hole. Hole 8, 190 yards, par 3 The longest of our par 3s. Always take one more club as the green sits on a slight incline and catches many out. Be aware of the left-hand bunker. A strong hole. Hole 9, 381 yards, par 4 Slightly uphill but a generous driving area. The green is protected by bunkers left and right and if missed can leave a treacherous chip.
14 Chipping Norton Golf Club
Hole 10 - 171 yards par 3 The first hole on the old nine. This is one of our signature holes and is very difficult to club. Between tee and green sits a deep dip and a bunker wraps round the front of the green to catch any under-hit shot. Hole 11, 504 yards, par 5 A beautiful par 5 that sweeps right to left into the trees. Aim your drive at the ash tree on the right side of the fairway. The land slopes from right to left so play your approach shot slightly right of the green. Hole 12, 267 yards, par 4 A real risk-and-reward hole. Easily drivable for the big hitters but trouble awaits left and right. To lay up favour the left side of the fairway for an easy approach to a well protected green. A good birdie chance. Hole 13, 442 yards, par 4 A long par 4 but with a very generous fairway that slopes from left to right so try and keep it up the right side. The green sits in a dip and your approach shot will come in from left to right. Hole 14, 411 yards, par 4 A dog-leg from right to left that may tempt the bigger hitter to take it on. Avoid the bunkers on the right side of the fairway. The green runs away from you so the second shot can play shorter than the yardage.
Chipping Norton Golf Club 15
16 Chipping Norton Golf Club
The Course - Hole by Hole Continued... Hole 15, 138 yards, par 3 A short par 3 that looks straightforward but miss the green and you will struggle for your par. A deep bunker left and pot bunker right is awaiting any loose shot. Hole 16, 359 yards, par 4 A tricky driving hole with two fairway bunkers on the right side of the fairway so try and favour the left side. The green is well protected and slopes off severely on the right side leaving a tough chip. Hole 17, 439 yards, par 4 The hardest hole on the course and our signature hole. Only a well-struck drive will clear the hedge and then you’ve got to avoid the bunkers for your second shot. The green is small and very well protected. Good luck! Hole 18, 362 yards, par 4 A pretty and fairly gentle finishing hole. The tee shot is better staying on top for easier vision of the green for your second shot. Anything short will run all the way down the bank so make sure you take plenty of club.

Practice Facilities For those of you who are really keen we also have substantial practice facilities available. These include a putting green just outside the clubhouse, a practice net, practice area and chipping and pitching green. These facilities are going to be greatly enhanced, however, with the construction of a magnificent new practice facility for the clubs’ members in 2012 on a section of land owned by the golf club, adjacent to the 1st Tee. The work will create a three-hole par 3 Short Game practice course and new 14-bay driving range and Professional Shop. The range will have realistic green complexes set at a variety of distances from the teeing area and clearly visible to the golfer. It is hoped that the new facilities will be ideal for youth development and beginners to bridge the gap between formative development through the practice range and lessons allowing them to graduate to the 18-hole golf course. A new practice green complete with practice bunker will also be constructed and to cope with what we expect to be a very popular addition to our club there will be a car parking facility for 28 vehicles.

Playing Categories Club Competitions Chipping Norton has an extensive and diverse competition programme for ladies, seniors, juniors and men. The majority of our competitions are managed and processed through our CONGU-approved software programme. Access terminals for tee booking and score entry are located in the ladies’ locker room and the entrance hallway of the clubhouse. Men The men enter a team each year in the Central Sevens Golf League, a premier league of golf clubs for teams of seven players with handicaps ranging from 6 to 20. There is also an accompanying knockout competition which Chipping Norton won in 2011. The club is also in the top division of the Shaw Gibbs Oxfordshire Foursomes League which features clubs meeting to contest three games of foursomes. Both these competitions take place on Saturdays, as do the many friendly fixtures played throughout the season. Here an enjoyable social occasion is as important as winning and good golf and after the five or six pairs on each side have done battle, the match is normally followed by a meal and some good-natured speeches.
Chipping Norton Golf Club 29
Playing Categories Continued... Another county event always well supported is the Hillman Trophy, where clubs are represented by seven players, three with handicaps of 6 to 9 and four with handicaps between 10 and 20. The club has traditionally has been based around competitive golf. There is a formal competition every Sunday morning and monthly medals on offer to both low and higher handicappers. The cups on offer to members throughout the season are numerous. The Hall Bowl is a matchplay knockout competition starting in March which runs through to the autumn, while the Secretary’s Trophy is for single-figure handicappers but played off scratch. There is, however, something for everyone and some of the trophies date back a long time, with the Challenge Cup, known as the Daly Cup, the club’s oldest trophy dating back to 1907. Ladies Ladies have always played an important part in the development of Chipping Norton Golf Club and club archives show that as early as 1892 a Ladies Scratch competition was held at the club. The majority of Ladies competitions are played on Thursdays with reserved tee-times from 8.30am to 10.30am. Ladies also have a reserved tee-time on most Saturdays, usually from 9am. The Ladies play matches in the North divisions of the Silver and Bronze sections of the county league which features five players per team competing in singles scratch matches.
30 Chipping Norton Golf Club
They also play in the Daily Mail Foursomes and Mail on Sunday national competitions, while a book is kept in the club listing details of county competitions members may care to enter. Friendly matches are played against quite a number of clubs, with venues alternating each year. It is an excellent opportunity to enjoy some of the county’s other delightful golf courses. Play involves fourball betterball or greensomes, normally four or five pairs a side. There are five majors, generally played on a Saturday, the most prestigious of which is the Beamish Trophy, a 36-hole scratch competition for the club championship. A prize is also awarded to the handicap winner. As with the men, a great deal of history surrounds many of the club competitions. The Hutchison Cup, for instance, was presented by the then president in 1907. A medal competition, it is still played for today. The ladies have their own very hard-working separate committee with its own secretary and handicap secretary. This is a very friendly section, which is keen to encourage new members to join in and enjoy the Chipping Norton experience to the full.

Playing Categories Continued... Seniors The seniors section, for golfers aged 60 and over, is extremely active and seizes every opportunity to make use of our wonderful course and facilities. There are early morning roll-ups on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with the Wednesday meeting normally being the more formal with fun formats featuring on the other two days. There are both winter and summer qualifiers for handicaps. Friendly fixtures are played against 15 clubs each summer season on a home and away basis featuring between six and eight pairs playing fourball betterball. These matches are always friendly but with a competitive edge and are followed by a relaxed meal. The major club event of the winter for seniors is the Senior Winter Competition. A cup is played for and goes to the player with the best scores from six cards out of approximately 14 played. In the summer there is a similar competition known as the Leech Cup, which started life as a table lamp before being turned into a tasteful trophy. Knockout singles and pairs competitions are also played, but more than the competitions, it is the golf and friendship which brings seniors together. New members are soon made to feel that they have belonged to the club for years. An annual away night is held in the summer where the seniors play a round of golf at another course, stay overnight and play a second round the following day. There is also an away day and regular greensomes matches are played with the Ladies throughout the year. Off the course, one of the events always greatly anticipated is the seniors’ own annual Christmas dinner, a formal evening function which they attend with their wives. Chipping Norton Golf Club 33

Juniors Chipping Norton has a thriving junior section with a number of our young golfers playing off single figure handicaps. We have a number of combined adult and junior competitions, as well as the usual junior competitions, club and league matches. We appreciate that the young golfers of today are our full members, captains and committee men and women of tomorrow. Our investment in educating them in the technique and etiquette of the sport we care so passionately about not only benefits the juniors themselves but ultimately the club as well. It is this commitment to the care, nurturing and development of our younger members which was recognised with the club being awarded GolfMark status in 2007. Children who have never played before can grasp the basics in our excellent Academy system under the expert guidance of head professional Stewart Davies and his team. When they are ready, the juniors are encouraged to take to the course under supervision and work towards earning their first handicap. Once they feel comfortable within the Chipping Norton golfing family, young people have a great many trophies to compete for, the most cherished of which is the Junior Championship played for in September over 36 holes. A team is entered in the Oxfordshire Junior Golf League, a competition in which the club has enjoyed great success in recent times including a run which saw us finish champions and lift the George Gale Cup for two years in succession and runners-up’ in year three. Societies Societies can expect an exhilarating day out at Chipping Norton Golf Club. We are a popular venue all year round and see groups returning year after year. We can cater for small or large groups and have several ready-made packages available or are happy to customise a day to your exact requirements. Start the day with a succulent bacon roll, followed by a challenging round on our 18-hole golf course. After your game, relax and unwind in our clubhouse where you will find a comprehensive selection of beers, lagers, spirits, wines and non-alcoholic beverages. A typical society package inclusive of green fees would be as follows: • Freshly brewed coffee • Bacon sandwich • Light lunch • 3 course evening meal The golf shop provides a comprehensive range of equipment as well as being able to arrange golf lessons and prizes. We can also organise longest drive markers and nearest the pin should you wish. Whilst we do not insist that all players are members of recognised golf clubs we expect them to be reasonably competent golfers and do ask that they observe the etiquette and rules of golf at all times. Bookings should be made one month in advance to enable us to inform members and arrange tee reservations and catering requirements. For more information on booking a society day please contact our Operations Manager on 01608 642383 or email golfadmin@chippingnortongolfclub.com Chipping Norton Golf Club 39

Social Activities With its friendly membership and well-appointed and welcoming clubhouse, it will come as no surprise that Chipping Norton members have equally as enjoyable a time off the course as they do on it. An extensive and varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in entertainment. If we can combine golf with our social activities all the better and we try to welcome new members into the fold as quickly as possible. One such opportunity to do this is at our popular Tuesday night nine-hole roll-up held throughout the summer months. Members can challenge the respective captains to a friendly match, with the proceeds going to charity, while those not involved in the featured match of the evening all take to the course with everyone joining up in the clubhouse for the traditional tasty fish and chip supper afterwards. The catering at Chipping Norton is outstanding, and we have many themed dinner evenings throughout the year where glorious fare from around the world can be sampled. All the traditional favourite days in the calendar such as Burn’s Night, Christmas and New Year’s Eve are also celebrated, while the club’s presentation evening, usually held at the end of November, is another date inked in the diary.
