Welcome Crews Hill Golf Club offers a spectacular parkland course often referred to as the Jewel of North London. Set in rolling countryside just north of Enfield, it is considered one of the finest tests of golf in the whole of Middlesex.

The 18-hole lay-out of 6,281 yards was designed by the world-renowned golf course architect Harry Colt. It has undulating fairways on most holes and greens that are in exceptional condition. It is a challenging course with well-placed bunkers, so even simple looking holes can produce a problem.
The superb facilities lend themselves easily as an outstanding venue for functions, ranging from wedding receptions and birthday parties to business meetings. Transport links are excellent, we are easily accessible from the M25 and have a mainline railway station right on our doorstep.
A problem for many, perhaps, but not for Charles Whitcombe, who was the professional here for 25 years. A Great Britain Ryder Cup captain and player, he will always be remembered at Crews Hill for the course record of 59 he shot in 1937, a mark that is unlikely to ever be bettered. The History of Crews Hill Some names now legendary in the world of golf are linked with the creation of Crews Hill Golf Club nearly a century ago. Harry Vardon viewed the area for the proposed course in 1915, a year after he won his sixth Open championship. Vardon called it “an ideal place in every way”, a sentiment still echoed by many members today. It is thought that only nine holes originally opened for play in 1921, as the meticulous designer Harry Colt was still hard at work making sure the others were exactly to his liking. And while several 18-hole competitions were completed that same year, it was not until June 1922 that the committee was able to record that “the whole course was now open and playing excellently.” Crews Hill is a course with a character of its own, each hole a separate challenge. Colt made full use of the gently undulating slopes and

nowadays the many trees, from the oldest oaks to the newest silver birches, provide a fitting setting for his grand design. And from the holes along the central ridge, the eye is easily tempted from the ball to the panoramic scenery on either side. Today’s trees have largely replaced much of the gorse that constituted a major hazard in the early days. A brochure from the 1950s described the first hole, then a par five, as having “a sea of gorse so close to the line into the green from the dog-leg as almost to mask the left side”. Although there are five short holes, all of them require the most careful shot placing to achieve results. Indeed, during pro-am events, one of the best spectator points is only a few yards from the clubhouse. From there, the professionals can be watched at close quarters
as they tackle the brook-protected tenth, when the pin is only yards from the out-of-bounds on the road. No history of Crews Hill would be complete without a mention of Charles Whitcombe, the professional here from 1925 to 1950. He and his two brothers, Ernest and Reg, represented Great Britain in the 1935 Ryder Cup, against the likes of Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen who were playing for the victorious United States team.

Despite all the subsequent technological improvements in equipment, his score of 59 is unlikely ever to be bettered. When Charles retired in 1950 his assistant, Len Mitchell, stood in. Len’s father, Abe, was one of those behind the creation of the Ryder Cup and the golfer on top of Samuel Ryder’s iconic trophy is actually a likeness of him.
Whitcombe played in the first six Ryder Cups, captaining the side on three occasions. He also led the Open on numerous occasions but unlike his brother Reg, who triumphed at windswept Royal St George’s in 1938, he never won it. Charles is most fondly remembered by members at Crews Hill, however, for setting the professional course record here on June 11, 1937. Going

The Course The 18-hole parkland course of 6,281 yards has undulating fairways on most holes and greens that run fast and true. As you would expect from a Harry Colt design, each round poses its own unique challenges and a good score should never be taken for granted as dropping one’s guard can prove damaging to one’s scorecard.

The well-maintained greens appear fairly flat at first glance but many contain subtle breaks ready to catch out the unwary.
Those wishing to work on their game can do so, with practice facilities including an area next to the 12th hole where members can groove their mid-irons and improve their bunker play, a practice green outside the clubhouse used for putting and chipping and two practice nets adjacent to the 10th tee.
There are many opportunities to take the driver from the tee but course management is also at a premium and often the wisest move is to play for position rather than length, particularly on the back nine, which is considerably tighter and has a winding brook in play a number of times. The 170-yard 10th is one of the hardest par-3 holes, played downhill across the brook and indeed all the short holes provide stern tests,

Course Tour If you have never played at Crews Hill Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour.
Hole 4, 530 yards, par 5 The first par 5 of the course, the tee shot should be aimed for the centre of the fairway, with out of bounds down the right and subtle sloping to the left.
Hole 1, 438 yards, par 4 The first tee shot of the course requires a well-placed drive that must be kept to the left-hand side of the fairway to enable a clear approach to the raised green.
Hole 5, 350 yards, par 4 With out of bounds to the right and large oak ready to block shots to the left this is a tough par four. A collection of bunkers either side of the fairway cause problems, while well-positioned bunkers surrounding the green make approach shots challenging.
Hole 2, 438 yards, par 4 This par four requires a drive to the left-hand side of the fairway to avoid the slopes to the right. The green is raised and its right hand slope can make par a challenge. Hole 3, 183 yards, par 3 Once again this hole requires a shot to the left-hand side, with a raised green sloping to the right.

Hole 6, 526 yards, par 5 For right-handed golfers, a draw is the best option for the tee shot with the fairway sloping off to the right. When approaching the green, be sure to keep shots left if they are bouncing short. Hole 7, 177 yards, par 3 From the back tee, this is a difficult uphill shot to a two-tier green with out of bounds to the back and bunkers left and right. A good test.
Hole 8, 407 yards, par 4 A dramatic hole with an uphill approach to the green. Bunkers wait for weak shots. Most golfers fall short due to uphill approach shots, so be bold and keep right. Hole 9, 377 yards, par 4 A slight dog-leg to the right, try to keep to the left-hand side of the fairway as this will open up the green as you approach. Beware a large bunker to the back of the green. Hole 10, 170 yards, par 3 A short hole with plenty to think about. Play it short and you are in the water, hit it long and you may find yourself with an awkward chip back and with out of bounds to the right, this hole is a true test.
Hole 13, 176 yards, par 3 The signature hole of our course, this picturesque par three requires a drive across the brook avoiding the bunkers surrounding the green. Hole 14, 424 yards, par 4 A sloping fairway from right to left, followed by a decision to make whether to fly the approach all the way to the flag or run it down from the right. With a stroke index of 1, this hole provides a true test. Hole 15, 154 yards, par 3 An uphill shot with slopes down to the green front, which is surrounded by bunkers. Never an easy par three. Hole 16, 504 yards, par 5 This short par five is a dog-leg to the left and requires a blind tee shot. Best kept left as the fairway slopes to the right.
Hole 11, 400 yards, par 3 A hole carved out by the brook running along the left-hand side of the fairway, the approach to the green usually favours keeping to the right hand side of the green. With a stroke index of 3 it is no easy par three.
Hole 17, 504 yards, par 5 Originally a blind tee shot to the raised fairway, now the tee has been raised we can see the green from the tee. Wayward tee shots can end up in the trees left or right while putting is made risky, as the green is two tiers with many tricky slopes.
Hole 12, 384 yards, par 4 The tee shot on this par four is simple, with a drive to the only flat area on the course followed by an uphill approach. Be careful to avoid the collection of bunkers surrounding the green.
Hole 18, 390 yards, par 4 With the clubhouse in sight, this slight dog-leg to the right makes for an interesting final hole. A raised green is surrounded by bunkers and its gentle slopes will punish any misread putts. www.crewshillgolfclub.com

Custom Fitting There has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess. Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes. The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing. This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to complement each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics.
Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at Crews Hill and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of products all available for custom fitting. This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking. Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise. Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their swing will train them to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which more often will lead to the correct impact position and result in better scores.

Membership Opportunities Crews Hill Golf Club currently has membership opportunities available in several categories. Now is an excellent time to become part of our golfing family because there is currently no joining fee.
Our ladies have an equally busy schedule, playing fixtures around the county in the Pearson Trophy as well as in other prestigious competitions.
Play golf seven days a week on one of the best courses in the area with our full membership. There is a great deal of competitive golf available to both male and female members against other clubs and in the pursuit of historic club trophies.
The veterans section get the chance to play home and away friendly matches, offering the chance to play many courses that perhaps have not been visited before.
Our men are loyal supporters of events run by the Middlesex Golf Union, with the 3-12 handicappers playing matches in the Middlesex Tigers Golf League and the higher handicappers team, called the Rabbits, also testing their skills against other clubs.

Members’ Golf Members at Crews Hill Golf Club enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year. There are fixtures against other clubs, together with much competition to be enjoyed alongside fellow members, some for silverware and some of a more social nature. There is always something to suit your handicap, age and golfing desire at Crews Hill Golf Club and you will certainly not be short of playing opportunities.
Men The Men’s section at Crews Hill Golf Club enjoy matches against other clubs in a series of friendly fixtures as well as a regular programme of events within the club, some featuring fun formats such as Texas Scramble, others with silverware on offer to the winners. They field two teams each year in leagues run by the Middlesex Golf Union, including the 3-12 handicappers playing matches in the

Middlesex Tiger Golf League, with higher handicappers also being able to test their skills playing for the Rabbits. The most sought-after trophy is the Club Championship, which is held over 36 holes spread over two days, while the “G” Goblets and the Manning Cup are also among the members’ favourites. As with all sections of the club, there is also a chance to represent Crews Hill in friendly matches, which are very relaxed affairs where enjoying good golf on fine courses and in good company is of more importance than the final result.

Seniors

The Seniors are a very strong section of the Club, meeting regularly for either fun competitions or qualifying medals and Stablefords.
Our Ladies usually hold their competitions on Tuesdays, with the Holmes Cup, Jescott Trophy and Club Championship Bowl amongst the favourites.
Informal roll-ups and a monthly medal competition are among the Senior favourites, while they also compete in a number of cup competitions, including the Senior Cup and the Davis Cup, a 15-hole strokeplay competition with a minimum age of 70.
As well as the trophy competitions, the Ladies regularly play matches against other clubs in the area, with affiliation to the Middlesex County Ladies Golf Association as well as holding a good record in the Pearson Trophy.
Ladies The Ladies’ Section at Crews Hill is a friendly, active group of ladies of all ages, who enjoy their golf and who play regularly in competitions, matches, mixed events and socially. They also enjoy the opportunities to get together and make good use of the club’s catering facilities.

Junior Golf Crews Hill has a thriving Junior section and we do all we can to
champion our adult members of the future, with coaching available from our Professional team to enable our young golfers to build foundations upon which to develop a solid golf game. Our junior golfers take part in organised competitions and are able to use the course without limitation from Monday to Friday, subject to availability. Juniors can also benefit from very attractive membership rates and with Carl Parker, our Head PGA Golf Professional, you could not be in better hands. Carl runs one-to-one and group coaching for juniors and is the perfect person to help young golfers get the most from their game.

Take A1005 to Enfield. Turn left after about 3 miles (Botany Bay) into East Lodge Lane. Turn right at the end and the entrance to Crews Hill is 300 yards on the right.
From M25 Junction 25
Take A10 to Enfield. Get into the right-hand lane and turn right for Forty Hall. Take the first turning right for Whitewebbs. Follow for 2 miles to Crews Hill. Turn right for Cuffley and follow the road past the nurseries and Crews Hill BR Station. The golf club is on the left.
