A true downland golf course with spectacular coastal views.

Welcome East Brighton Golf Club is situated in an enviable location only two miles from Brighton city centre yet is a true downland golf course with spectacular coastal views. Formed in 1901, our historic course stretches to 6,426 yards off the Championship tees and has a par of 72. While it is certainly a challenge, particularly when the wind blows, it offers a fair test to golfers of all ages and abilities. Being built on chalk, and with its lofty position overlooking the English Channel, our course drains quickly and is often open for play when neighbouring clubs are closed. We pride ourselves in being a friendly and sociable private members’ club that extends a warm welcome to members, societies, corporate groups and green fee visitors alike.

East Brighton is the perfect venue for those looking to simply play a round of golf, enjoy a great society or corporate golf day or learn to play under the guidance of Adrian Milligan, our head professional, and his team, who have some of the latest technology available in their new purpose-built teaching studio. The off-course experience is equally pleasurable, with a delightful clubhouse full of character where members and guests may relax with a drink or sample some of the wonderful fare on offer from our caterers. If you enjoy competitive golf in a friendly environment, on a top quality course with stunning views of the Sussex Downs and the English Channel, then we look forward to welcoming you to East Brighton..

We pride ourselves on being a friendly and sociable club, with an ambience to complement the golf.

About Our Club The club was formed in 1893 and in 1908 James Braid (Open Champion five times between 1901 and 1910 and the most sought-after golf architect in his day) redesigned the course to basically what you see today. East Brighton offers you a course that rarely closes during the winter, or resorts to temporary greens or tees, due to being built upon chalk subsoil.

A Golf Academy has been established for a while now and is proud to be introducing new golfers to the game; we were one of the first clubs to extend equal rights to Ladies. Whilst we believe in maintaining the best traditions of golf, we also provide a friendly and relaxed atmosphere to members and guests. In the interest of both, the club allows smart casual dress in most parts of the clubhouse.

We pride ourselves on being a friendly and sociable club, with an ambience to complement the golf. Although blessed with more than 100 years of tradition, we have moved readily into the modern era of providing a contemporary golfing environment for everyone.

During 1928/ 1929 the clubhouse had substantial rebuilding undertaken, again in 1975 and was refurbished in 1990.

Club History Mr Steyning Beard, a local landowner, received a letter from a Mr Abbey with a request to rent sufficient land to allow the setting up of a nine-hole course for 20-30 players at a rental of £15 per annum. This was agreed to and on 12th May 1893 the Ovingdean Golf Club was formed. The first AGM was held in October 1893. The Club name was changed to Kemp Town Golf Club and permitted membership increased. A new lease was obtained and Mr Beard was asked to be a Vice President which he accepted. In 1901 it was proposed to change the name of the Club to Brighton and Kemp Town Golf Club, however Brighton and Hove Golf Club objected, anticipating some confusion with this name, so in June 1901 the Club became East Brighton Golf Club Limited and remains so today. In 1905 work commenced on a clubhouse which was opened in November of that year. At this time extra ground was obtained by lease and William Park and James Braid were invited to tender for a contract to improve the course 8

on 130 acres. Braid was chosen and his redesign was completed for opening on 23rd May 1908 and has remained virtually unchanged since. When Mr Beard died in 1912 the Club was offered the land for £5,000 with an indication they could get it for £4,000, £1,000 down and a £3,000 loan at 3%. This was not accepted by the Club and the whole Estate was sold to Brighton Council for £30,000. The Club rented the course from the Council for a peppercorn rent of £200 rising to £4,000 by 1992. At this time the Council attempted to increase the rent to £80,000 per annum. This was not accepted, the Club went to arbitration, won and the rental was set at £9,000 per annum. At this time negotiations were opened to buy the land and this was completed in December 1996 for £600,000. During 1928/1929 the clubhouse had substantial rebuilding undertaken, again in 1975 and was refurbished in 1990.

In 1986/1987 an irrigation system was installed to all greens and this was extended in 1991 to the teeing areas. Many illustrious names have appeared on the membership list including David Lloyd George, who joined in 1911 and as Prime Minister held War Cabinet Meetings in the Oak Lounge in the period 1916-1918, together with Field Marshall Earl Haig and Sir William Robertson, both of whom were Club Presidents. Others of blue blood include The Marquis of Abergavenny, The Earl of Chichester and His Grace The Duke of Norfolk and the Duke and Duchess of Fife. In the 1930s the Club was a popular venue for professional tournaments. In 1933 Walter Hagen and Densmore Shute, famous US golfers, beat Alf Padgham and Charlie Parsons

(Club Professional) 6 and 5 in an exhibition match and the News Chronicle Tournament was played for four years from 1935-1938 with Abe Mitchell, Ernie and Reg Whitcombe and Sam King on the leaderboards. Both pre and post Second World War this Club was a popular venue for the Theatrical Society with names well known to the public, when at weekends, you may have seen Jack Buchanan, Leslie Henson or Max Miller. The links with the Theatre continued post war when James Carreras (later Sir James) of Hammer Horror Films fame organized Variety Club competitions with his friends Christopher Lee, Sir Stanley Baker, Eric Sykes, Ronnie Corbett, Billy Dainty, Charlie Drake and Henry Cooper.

Generous fairways and no impossible carries contribute to an enjoyable round, even if the occasional disaster strikes.

The Course At 6,426 yards and with a par of 72, East Brighton presents a genuine challenge for golfers of all handicaps, whilst remaining absolutely fair. Generous fairways and no impossible carries contribute to an enjoyable round, even if the occasional disaster strikes. At the halfway house, golfers can take a short break and enjoy hot or cold drinks and snacks. Ladies and Gents facilities are also available.

One particularly important feature of the course is that drainage is very good because it is built upon chalk, making it playable throughout the whole of the year without having to use temporary tees or greens. Continuous improvements maintain East Brighton’s reputation as being one of the best courses in the county.

From the 12th tee, the highest point on the course, spectacular views of the English coastline can be enjoyed, from Beachy Head to the east and Selsey Bill to the west. On a clear day, the silhouette of the Isle of Wight can be seen on the western horizon to add to already magnificent sea and downland views.

A very long tee shot can set you up for a shot to the mouth of the green.

Take the Course Tour Prepare for your visit to East Brighton by familiarising yourself with each hole over the coming pages and make the most of your round with our hole-by-hole guide. You can prepare yourself for the challenges that await, as well as pick up some invaluable playing tips from our professional, Adrian Milligan. Hole 1 (Away We Go) 365 Yards, Par 4 A tee shot favouring the left of the fairway opens up the green and should leave you with a medium to long iron into an elevated green. Hole 2 (Roedean Towers) 211 Yards, Par 3 Depending on where the pin is cut, usually a fade off the left hand-side is the ideal shot.

12

East Brighton Golf Club

Hole 3 (Red Hill Crest) 348 Yards, Par 4 With out of bounds on your right the sensible play is to keep up the left side of the marker post, leaving you a middle iron into the green. Hole 4 (Pit Stop) 161 Yards, Par 3 A tricky short par 3 that can be deceptive on a windy day. It is best to be long rather than short here. Hole 5 (Ovingdean Hollow) 563 Yards, Par 5 The fairway from the tee runs away to the left, so a wellhit shot in the general direction of the pond in the distance usually ends up on the fairway or in the semi-rough. From there, you are left with the option of taking a long shot for the green or laying up short to avoid the fairway sand.

Hole 6 (Tranquillity) 515 Yards, Par 5/4 Either a par 5 or a par 4 depending upon which tees you are using. A very long tee shot can set you up for a shot to the mouth of the green, but you will need to negotiate the two fairway bunkers and the greenside bunkers on the way!

Hole 9 (Kestrel’s Haunt) 429 Yards, Par 4 A long tee shot to the centre of the fairway is essential if you want to try for a shot to the green in two on this testing par 4. The elevated green usually requires you to take at least a club or two extra.

Hole 7 (Dunstan’s View) 171 Yards, Par 3 Depending where the pin is cut you can play this with a full carry or you can pitch it short favouring the left side and let it run on.

Hole 10 (Carry the Valley) 211 Yards, Par 3 A shot across the valley to a green that can be fairly difficult to hold, especially if the wind is from behind. You may want to land it short and let it run on.

Hole 8 (Round the Bend) 380 Yards, Par 4 A shot towards the fairway bunker should run to the left leaving a straight shot to this slightly elevated green. The big hitters sometimes cut the corner and go over the trees, but the rough on the right can come into play.

All three tee locations require a carry over trees to the safety of the fairway.

Take the Course Tour Continued... Hole 11 (The Grinder) 488 Yards, Par 5 The tee shot should ideally be played up the left side away from the sloping fairway and out of bounds that runs the whole length of the right side. Your next shot should avoid the fairway bunkers by keeping up the left side. The hole narrows in as you near the green with the 12th tee and the racecourse on the left hand side and more OOB on the right and behind. Hole 12 (Bowden’s Ace) 404 Yards, Par 4 This downhill hole doglegs slightly left, so the ideal shot is to play a draw on the fairway marker post avoiding the hard-tosee fairway pot bunker on the right. A well-hit tee shot should leave a pitch and run into the green. Be careful not to run through the back.

Hole 13 (Up and Over) 306 Yards, Par 4 The competition (white) tee is played from adjacent to the racecourse and the yellow and red tees are located near to the 11th green. All three tee locations require a carry over trees to the safety of the fairway. The slope on the fairway tends to take the ball left so allow for this and you should only have a short iron into the green. Hole 14 (Red Hill Down) 378 Yards, Par 4 A straight par 4 with out of bounds down the right. A shot down the left can run beyond the fairway and either down the slope into the rough or into newly-planted trees. Therefore, a shot to the middle of the fairway is essential, leaving a long to medium approach into a green that can be fairly difficult to hold.

A shot on the left-hand side close adjacent to the 4th green is favourite.

Take the Course Tour Continued... Hole 15 (Channel View) 492 Yards, Par 5 This hole sets up for a perfect draw avoiding the trees on the left. The second shot should favour the left side to avoid a large depression on the right which is difficult to spot. Both these objectives achieved, you should be left with a short iron into the green. Hole 16 (Carrera’s Carry) 156 Yards, Par 3 This hole usually plays very similarly to the 4th hole, but you need to avoid the large pit bunker guarding the front and the other three bunkers left and right. Hole 17 (Bridle Crossing) 374 Yards, Par 4 Depending upon the tee in use and the wind direction, you may need to consider if the pits guarded by gorse are in

range and change your club accordingly. A shot on the left-hand side close adjacent to the 4th green is favourite, avoiding the out of bounds on the right and leaving only a mid-iron to the green. Hole 18 (Marina View) 474 Yards, Par 5 This hole is guarded by out of bounds all the way down the right side, so a shot just on the left side of the marker post is ideal and should leave you a sight of the green. The downhill shot towards the green is guarded by three bunkers on the left and a larger one on the right. A great opportunity to finish with a birdie!

Our PGA staff will take you on an intensive six-week course, during which time you will learn the rules of golf and etiquette.

Learn to Play Just started to hit the odd golf ball? Played pitch and putt? Really liked it? Want to join a golf club but don’t feel good enough? Well here is your chance whether you have played on the odd occasion or you are just picking up a club for the first time. Joining our Learn to Play (LTP) membership category at East Brighton’s very own Golf Academy could be the best decision a beginner golfer could ever make. Our PGA staff will take you on an intensive six-week course, during which time you will learn the rules of golf and etiquette to a level required at East Brighton Golf Club and improve your golf swing technique to a level ready for playing the course. However, that is not all. Other benefits include: Be able to get a handicap, this will enable you to play at all other courses.

Unlimited golf (subject to terms and conditions which are available on our website). This will be once you have passed a playing, rules and etiquette test. Playing the course will be at first during off-peak times (summer: Monday-Sunday after 1pm, winter: after 12pm Monday-Friday and after 1pm at weekends) until upgrading membership to ‘full’ membership. Having passed these requirements the PGA Professional will then offer you the chance to upgrade to become a full club member, this will be at a reduced rate depending at what point in the year of the Learn to Play subscription you are in. This membership is for a maximum of 12 months, all for a very reasonable fee. Normally the cost of the golf lessons alone would be £150; use of the golf course facilities would cost a huge amount if played to the maximum. Not bad when the cost of an average green fee is around £35 these days! But the most important thing is that you become introduced to a friendly welcoming golf club and have your very first handicap to show off! East Brighton Golf Club

22

Here is an idea of how the intensive six-week training schedule breaks down:

Week Four: ½ Hour Full swing progression.

Week One: 1 Hour Giving out syllabus and answering questions regarding the LTP programme. Understanding the student and their progress so far in golf. Payment of LTP Membership. PGA-approved swing-building sequence lesson 1 (aim, hold, posture, stance, ball position, alignment and half-swing).

Week Five: 1 Hour Playing the course. Rules and etiquette test and results.

Week Two: ½ Hour Swing-building sequence lesson 2. Hand out of rules and etiquette questions with answers for pupil to learn for later exam.

Week Six: ½ Hour Next stage of pupil’s membership and advice for future golf. (Discuss what membership LTP pupil can play at and what is required to progress to Full Membership category). For more details, please ring the PGA staff on 01273 604838 or email office@ebgc.co.uk

Week Three: 1 Hour Short game (chipping, bunkers and pitching). East Brighton Golf Club

There is also a very nice ninehole putting green right outside the Pro Shop.

Practice Facilities East Brighton Golf Club has some excellent practice facilities for those looking to work on lowering their handicap. Coupled with the tuition offered indoors and out by our expert PGAqualified teaching professionals, it represents the complete game improvement programme. There is a large practice ground up at the top of the hill from the clubhouse which is used by members and for visitors having golf lessons. There are targets at 50-yard intervals for focused practice and working on both distance and accuracy. Because of the excellent draining qualities of our course, it is possible to hit off turf all year round, which provides much better feedback on how you are truly striking the ball.

For working on the short game there is a chipping area not far from the clubhouse which also has a practice bunker, ideal for ridding oneself of the fear that grips many when their ball enters the sand during the course of a round. There is also a very nice nine-hole putting green right outside the Pro Shop, whose excellent surface mirrors those to be found out on the course.

East Brighton was the first club in the South of England to receive the prestigious GolfMark from the English Golf Union.

Junior Golf East Brighton is passionate in its commitment to introducing the great game of golf to a whole new generation of players and therefore does everything it can to encourage juniors. The club has a very strong junior section made up of both boys and girls, with some outstanding players, due in no small part to the Saturday coaching that the juniors receive from our team of qualified professionals. One of our junior girls, Tiffany Hewetson, is currently enjoying a golf scholarship in America. East Brighton was the first club in the South of England to receive the prestigious GolfMark from the English Golf Union. The award recognises the quality of the coaching programme

at East Brighton, together with the club’s comprehensive and coherent Child Protection policies. Classes for up to ten youngsters begin in March and are held right through to the autumn. Open to members and nonmembers, booking is advisable to reserve a place on one of these popular Saturday afternoon sessions. All areas of golf are covered – grip, swing, short game, long game, bunker play and much more – the aim being to build a sound foundation with which to start, thus hopefully eliminating much of the angst and frustration experienced by adult learners who discover the game later in life and find it much more difficult to grasp the basics.

An extensive and varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year.

Social Activities With its friendly membership and historic and welcoming clubhouse, it will come as no surprise that East Brighton members have equally as enjoyable a time off the course as they do on it.

Weekly Sunday lunches are always well attended, and there are also lunches to celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

An extensive and varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in entertainment.

Our trophy presentation evening in 2011 was incorporated with a most enjoyable wine tasting evening and for those who like their sport, we show the major sporting events such as the Ryder Cup as well as Football, Rugby and Cricket on Sky Sports. It is so much more fun watching your team with friends than it is on your own at home.

These social occasions range from a celebration of Burn’s Night in January, which involves a sit-down meal and much merriment, to theme evenings and Sixties nights.

Among the more light-hearted but no less enjoyable events organised in the recent past have been fun golf evenings, race and quiz nights.

The catering at East Brighton is exceptionally good and if there is an opportunity to celebrate an event alongside sampling the excellent fare produced by our chef, then we jump at the chance.

The festive season is not forgotten, with a Christmas Dinner in early December and a party on New Year’s Eve.

East Brighton Golf Club is situated just east of Brighton.

How to Find Us East Brighton Golf Club is situated just east of Brighton, close to Brighton racecourse and the marina. For satellite navigation purposes our postcode is BN2 5RA. Directions From the North - Assuming travel from the A23. When coming towards Brighton on the A23, look for signs to A27 Lewes and leave the A23 for this junction. When on the A27 head towards Lewes (East) until the Rottingdean/Falmer junction. After leaving on the slip road, at the roundabout turn right heading towards Rottingdean. Keep on this road for about 2 miles (across the downs). When you begin coming downhill into Woodingdean prepare to turn right at the traffic lights (crossroads). Continue along this road heading towards Brighton for about a mile before turning left at the traffic lights across the racecourse. Follow the road down the hill towards the sea. At the next lights turn left and then look out as about 100 yards up on the left is the slip road entrance into the golf club.

From the East - If on the A27 use the directions as per the north, making sure to exit the A27 at the Falmer/Rottingdean junction. From the South - Swim! When landing at the beach, dry yourself and call a taxi to the golf club. From the West - If travelling along the A27 follow the directions above. Otherwise from the town centre, head East on the A259 Coast Road, and turn left (back on yourself) just after the pitch and putt course (past the marina). Take this road and continue over the brow of the hill, until when you begin to descend towards the traffic lights look out for the slip road of the golf club on the right hand side. Take this turning slowly. Public Transport - The nearest station is Brighton, which is about 2.5 miles or a ten-minute taxi ride away. Frequent trains run north from here to Gatwick and London, east to Lewes and Eastbourne and west to Worthing. East Brighton Golf Club
