A DEBUT TO REMEMBER All-rounder Chris Jordan tells Bruce Talbot about a remarkable first season for Sussex, which ended with England recognition

CJ with a typically forthright appeal during the win over Somerset at Horsham. Needless to say, it was answered in the affirmative!

T

en years after Mushtaq Ahmed propelled Sussex to the first County Championship in their history with 103 wickets Chris Jordan’s impact in his debut season has arguably been just as impressive. True, CJ’s first summer didn’t end with any silverware at the end of it, but it did finish with him making his England one-day debut when he rattled a few gilded Australian cages. He finished with 59 Championship wickets, a tally bettered by only Graham

Onions, team-mate Steve Magoffin and Tim Murtagh, and he also took 19 one-day wickets. Add in a couple of half-centuries and 22 catches at slip, many of them absolute crackers, and it added up to an exceptional first season. It was no surprise towards the end of it that the selectors gave him an opportunity in the final ODI of the summer when he bowled aggressively to take three wickets and earn himself a place on England’s Performance Programme with the prospect of more international cricket in the winter.

Even being able to stand up to the physical demands of a full summer would have been a pipedream for CJ during the darkest hours of his Surrey career when, having recovered from a career-threatening back injury, he found himself a victim of their ultimately misguided decision to rely on experienced players rather than give youth its head. As he sat down in late September to review the season he was gracious enough not to rub salt into Surrey wounds, even if privately he might think his old county got what they deserved with relegation. >>

>> Instead he reflected on a summer that went better than he could have imagined. When Sussex signed him, Mark Robinson felt he was an unpolished diamond. Like Mushy a decade ago – and quite a few players since – Jordan revelled in an environment where everything is done to ensure the players can consistently perform where it matters. I remember sitting with Robbo in the Hove press box watching CJ for the first time back in April. He was wearing about six layers in the bitter early-Spring cold and wore a bobble hat as further protection against the chill. But when he peeled a layer or two off and ran in at a deceptively languid pace and delivered the ball at splice-rattling speed Sussex’s coach was entitled to a wry smile. Of course, bowling against the Loughborough students is nothing compared to the Championship, but eight wickets against Yorkshire and Jordan was up and running. “It was a nice start and you could say I haven’t really looked back, although it feels like a very long time ago now,” he said. “I came back from Barbados (for whom he’d taken 24 wickets) in decent form and more or less continued that really.” It finished with England recognition, but I suspect getting through a full season unscathed gave him almost as much pleasure as hearing the good news from Geoff Miller.

“All I wanted to do was put in some good performances for Sussex day in day out. I wasn’t really thinking about England at all. When it came I was pretty happy.” “I’m just grateful that I’ve come through it without injury,” he said. “I have been injury-free for three years now but the time I spent out with my stress fracture made me appreciate my own body a lot better and the importance of strengthening work and of recovering properly. It’s great to be sitting here now just saying that. Getting fit was a long, hard road and I am glad to have come out of it at the right end. I never feared the worst in terms of my career because I was young and knew I could recover. “To be honest, all I wanted to do was put in some good performances for Sussex day in day out. I wasn’t really thinking about England at all. When it came I was pretty happy and a little bit surprised as well. Matt Prior gave me some good advice about what it’s like at that level and what to expect. The biggest difference is that a lot of your good balls get hit for four! But I enjoyed my debut even though we lost the game. What also pleased me that the selectors saw it fit to put me on the EPP and I’m very much looking forward to it and I hope to do well. But again it’s one stride at a time. Let’s see what I can achieve and then what the next step is to

becoming an even better player.” Jordan’s potential as a schoolboy back in Barbados was spotted by former Sussex opener Bill Athey, who got him over on a scholarship at Dulwich College, where ‘Ath’ still works. “I still speak to Mr Athey regularly,” said Jordan with due deference to his old teacher. “We are in constant contact and he is very proud and hopefully I can keep making him proud.” As he bustles in and bowls at close to 90mph, Jordan looks the personification of the aggressive West Indian fast bowler and nothing seems to faze him. Like Magoffin, if he gets hit for four he simply walks back to his mark, plotting revenge against the batsman. “I don’t get too flustered or worked up about things,” he admits. “I try to keep things quite simple and I intend carrying on doing that.” Doesn’t he ever get angry? “When I’m getting battered on the pitch I suppose I do,” he smiles. “I am quite calm but I am competitive. You want to win don’t you? That’s what you play professional sport for.” Listening to Bob Marley or strolling along Brighton beach (It’s nice but Barbados is better!) helps him unwind.

There weren’t too many occasions when CJ got ‘battered’ in 2013. Third place in the Championship was Sussex’s best finish for six seasons. Can they do better next year? “ I think we showed enough this season that we are capable of winning the Championship with a bit of luck,” he said. “In the past, Sussex have done well in oneday cricket so this year was disappointing in that. We’ll be looking forward to putting that right.” Jordan is relishing his new environment and who’s to say he can’t do even better next year. Fast bowlers are supposed to be in their prime in their late 20s. Just 25, CJ’s best years could be in front of him. “I had to prove myself when I came to Sussex but I did that and by the end of the season I’d got England recognition. The environment created by the coaching staff here is very conducive to making you a better player and I owe Sussex a lot.” Sussex supporters will feel they have been repaid if CJ can have a few more summers like 2013.

Zac Toumazi

View from the top Chief Executive Zac Toumazi looks back on the summer just gone, and ahead to 2014

T

he season came, and in a blink of an eye, went but what about the cricket? Clearly we had our highs and lows. Let’s start with the lows... Our one-day results did not materialise as expected and despite considerable hard work and effort on the part of Robbo and the team, we found ourselves finishing bottom of the Friends Life T20 South Group - something we haven’t experienced before. Some of our earlier matches came down to a last ball finish which did not go our way, such are the fine margins in the T20 competition. We finished strongly in the Yorkshire Bank 40 competition after a sluggish start. Regardless of the results, I am convinced that this is nothing more than a blip. We will learn from last season, plan and move on positively. On the other hand, we should be very proud of our achievements in the LV=County Championship as to finish third is hugely gratifying, particularly that we have moved from fifth to third over the last three seasons.

I believe we are heading in the right direction. To finish the season with a home victory over Durham, the Championship title winners, lifted our mood and has set us up for the winter as we’re eager to get back onto the field of play. Other highs include the hosting of the Australian tourist match, both of our excellent festivals (despite the little bit of rain), and not forgetting welcoming Sir Cliff Richard to Hove. A special mention should be made in respect to our women’s team who were Championship winners - what a fantastic result! Well done Terry, Charlotte and all those involved. A lot of people think that once the season is over we all take off for a long holiday - if only! The club continues to plan for next year and to use corporate jargon “sweat the asset.” We are committed to creating an all year-round business in order to drive up revenue for the benefit of cricket. This will be one of the primary objectives for our commercial team. A lot of you may have heard about the change in fixtures for next year, but what is happening? Based on

market research conducted by the ECB, the fixture schedule for the 2014 season and beyond will be changed. The Championship will see the vast majority of the games starting on a Sunday, whilst T20s will feature predominantly on Friday nights at Hove with seven group matches starting earlier from mid-May and running throughout the season. The YB40 will cease to exist but will be replaced by the 50 over competition with the games taking place to mid-July. We are currently working on the allocation of fixtures with the ECB and other counties and will of course publish these as soon as they are ready. In signing off, I would like to thank everyone at Sussex Cricket: our members, sponsors and visitors for your support over the 2013 season and look forward to welcoming each and every one of you back in the spring of 2014 for the sound of leather on willow. Winter well! Good old Sussex by the Sea!

Field of dreams The Sutton Winson Academy continues to go from strength to strength

A

s sponsors of the Academy, Sutton Winson has played an important part in helping to ensure the long-term success of the club and there’s a great deal to be proud of. The Academy gives young players the opportunity to compete at differing levels with teams ranging from the elite squads and Sussex Girls to the Sussex Sharks Visually Impaired XI and local groups in and around Blackstone and Henfield. It’s an environment that encourages participants to develop themselves as individuals, their cricketing skills and teamwork. Many have benefited from their time at the Sutton Winson Academy Ground including international stars like Matt Prior and Michael Yardy, and many of our current squad members. Wicketkeeper-batsman, Ben Brown, 23, progressed via the Academy and is now the first choice wicketkeeper in Prior’s absence. He has been described by captain Ed Joyce as “a hugely talented and hard-working cricketer.” Leg-spinner Will Beer, 24, also joined Sussex via the Academy route. Club Coach Mark Davis describes Will as “steadily improving, year upon year.” Up and coming all-rounder Harry Finch received the Under17s Player of the Year and Academy Player of the Year accolades at the Academy and Youth Squad in 2012. Head of Cricket Development, Tim Shutt, outlined how national success

had been achieved by several groups, including Brighton College Girls and the Visually Impaired Squad. He said: “We’re very happy to share these successes as it demonstrates how the Sutton Winson Academy Ground enables young players to go from strength to strength. Success depends upon the hard work and commitment of all involved and, of course, financial support. Sutton Winson’s sponsorship of the Academy Ground is a great help in this regard and an obvious contribution.” It is however just part of the relationship as David Bowden, Chairman of the Sussex Cricket Community Trust, explained: “Insurance is a necessity for most of us, whether we’re protecting our car, house, pet or holiday travel arrangements, and it’s often a considerable expense. So we’ve been working with Sutton Winson to offer our members and supporters an opportunity to save money as well as another route to supporting the Academy and club. The partnership with Sutton Winson means that every policy bought from them delivers a further financial contribution to the club and we all benefit from working together.” Tim Brangwyn, Director at Sutton Winson, said: “We passionately believe that long-term success depends upon hard work, honesty and teamwork. These values are reflected in all that the Academy and the club do and it’s a privilege to be able to play a part. I hope

that the partnership we have put together works as it really is in all of our interests.” This season, in order to promote the relationship and the reciprocal arrangement for supporters and the Academy, Sutton Winson attended the Warwickshire and Australia matches. A prize draw was run on both occasions with prizes including a bat signed by the first team, £100 of Gift Shop vouchers and an iPad. With over 350 entrants, promotion of the message ‘Boost Academy Funds – buy insurance from Sutton Winson’ was enhanced. Sutton Winson will now be emailing the entrants in the month they stated their insurance was due to try and boost the Academy funds. You can obtain a quotation or find out more by visiting www.suttonwinson.com/ sccc or call the team on 0800 980 2701.

MAKING PROGRESS Our best finish in the Championship since 2007 represented a ‘decent’ first season in charge, according to Ed Joyce. He looks back on the summer and outlines what needs to be done to improve in 2014. Ed Joyce plays a typically stylish shot against Surrey in May when he was dismissed two short of a century

Q We finished on a high by beating the champions at Hove. How important was that?

A The wicket we played on was the sort of pitch we like. It was re-laid and started hard, with very little grass on it, but then it flattened out a bit and there was something there for the spinners. If we can, we’d like to play on those sorts of pitches all of next season. And it was good to finally get a Championship win at Hove too and get that monkey off our backs. Q Personally it was a great year for you with 1,118 runs at an average of nearly 66. How hard was it to separate your responsibilities as batsman with those as captain? A I found that it did give me an extra focus to do well with the bat. There is added responsibility that comes with captaincy and I guess I did go out there thinking ‘I can’t

really play a loose shot here.’ To be fair, I have felt good with the bat for the last couple of seasons so it was nice to continue that form. I have enjoyed the captaincy although in the last few weeks I was absolutely knackered.

Q Third was our best season since 2007. Was it a fair reflection on the Championship campaign?

A I think you finish where you deserve to in the Championship. We have been pretty consistent and, as a squad, dealt with a few serious issues fairly well. Could we have won it? Yes. I look back on the home defeats to Derbyshire and Middlesex with a great deal of frustration. We lost the toss in both which gave the opposition a definite advantage but we didn’t play well enough, especially against Derbyshire when we had a lead going into the second innings. If we’d won one of those two it would have kept us in the hunt.

Autumn 2013 | 13

FtSe

ED JOYCE

Q What needs to change for Sussex to challenge in 2014? A Hopefully we will have a fairly settled squad next year. I wouldn’t blame what happened to Monty Panesar but he obviously should have been a huge player for us and it did become a disruption because he was a crucial part of our plans for Championship cricket and when he didn’t perform at his best it was a blow. We are looking to sign Ashar Zaidi and he would be an option for us as a batting all-rounder while the makeup of the side in 2014 will probably look a bit different, that won’t necessarily be a bad thing. I think Ash is capable of batting higher up the order and he bowls spin better than Chris Nash so we will be stronger if he signs! Because Ash would strengthen the batting, we might be able to pick an extra seamer which we probably need, especially if we lose Chris Jordan to England. It seems spin bowling has become less important in winning the Championship. I can only remember a couple of games in the last two or three years when we’ve played on a turning pitch. If you look at Durham they have a strong engine room from 5-8 and that is because they have some good all-rounders. That could be a way forward for us, but it depends if we can add to the squad further.

Q For the first time since 2005 three Sussex bowlers took 50 wickets. How highly do you rate the seam attack?

A Chris Jordan has impressed me massively and done better than anyone expected. The talent was always in there with CJ. I remember thinking that when I played against him for Middlesex but sometimes when players move counties and know they are going to play in every game it allows them to develop into their roles very quickly if they have the ability and CJ is a case in point. He’s a captain’s dream because when he comes on you know exactly what you are going to get. Mags (Steve Magoffin) is Mags – you know he is going to land it on a sixpence more or less every ball – and he has been so consistent for the last two years. Jimmy Anyon takes wickets. He can go around the park at times, which is frustrating, but he does get good players out. I also have to mention that, when he’s played, Luke Wright has done a decent job for us as well.

Q Our one-day form needs to improve doesn’t it?

A As a county we have traditionally done well in 20 and 40 overs cricket so it was a bit of a shock that we didn’t qualify in either competition. We lost a few tight games in t20 and in such a strong group we were always playing catch-up. I don’t think we did ourselves justice in the 40 overs either, although towards the end we played some good cricket. If we’d managed to play a couple of

14 | 2013 Autumn

times when it rained we might have got through and some individuals, such as Matt Machan, came on so there were some positives, but we know we can improve a lot and that will be one of our main areas of focus throughout the winter, especially as we are reverting back to 50 overs next year.

Q Finally, what does the winter hold in store for you? A There are lots of Ireland commitments but my wife is due to give birth to our second child in November so we’re trying to work out how I can play for my country and of course be with my family. I’m 35 now but I would love to have one more World Cup with Ireland. That is what I am working towards and hopefully I can achieve it.

Ed Joyce passed 50 eight times in the Championship in 2013, but surprisingly only converted those good starts into hundreds on two occasions. He made an unbeaten 204 against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, his highest score for Sussex, and followed it with 101 in his next game against former county Middlesex. In the first half of the season Ed was out three times in the 90s: 92 against Yorkshire and 98 at Surrey and Middlesex.

And the winners are… A few hours after Sussex had finished the season in style by securing third place in the County Championship, the players, staff and supporters gathered to celebrate the summer at Awards Night in the Montefiore Hospital Boundary Rooms.

F

or the second year running, Australian fast bowler Steve Magoffin took the Championship Player of the Season award. ‘Mags’ took 63 wickets at 21.49 in the Division One campaign, despite missing the home game with Warwickshire in May because of a knee injury. Who knows? If he’d been fit Steve might even have challenged Graham Onions for the accolade of leading wicket-taker. Upon accepting the award, Steve said: “It has been a long season but we were delighted to finish it by beating Durham and securing third spot.” There’s no doubt what game Mags remembers most. At Horsham in late May he took 12 for 31 in the two-day win over

Somerset, including 8 for 20 in the first innings when Somerset were bowled out before lunch on the opening morning. He added: “That was a special day without a doubt. Everything clicked. I felt in great rhythm and the wicket helped me – and the boys were pleased because they got two extra days off!”

when he scored another big hundred. Luke will once again be playing in the Big Bash T20 tournament in Australia this winter and is hoping for more action with England, who have a one-day series in Australia and West Indies over the next few months.

It also earned Steve a second accolade for the Performance of the Year.

Luke said: “There were some special innings and I was really pleased that my form got me back into the England one-day set up.”

One-Day Player of the Year went to Luke Wright, who scored over 500 runs in the Yorkshire Bank 40 at an average of 62.75, including three hundreds. His consistent domestic form saw him called up to the England ODI team for the series with Australia, and he also captained the England Lions in their mini-series with Bangladesh A,

There were also two awards for Chris Jordan in his first season with the county. His 59 Championship wickets saw him win the Most Improved Player of the Year award. The consistency of his performances was also recognised by the selectors and in September he made his England one-day debut against Australia. >>

Ashar Zaidi

FtSe

Ash aims to take his chance Sussex have had some outstanding players from Pakistan over the years and Ashar Zaidi might be the next to make an impression. By Bruce Talbot

THE MAN IN BLACK (AND WHITE): Ashar Zaidi bowls on debut against Yorkshire in his first first-class match since 2009

A

shar Zaidi thought his chance of playing county cricket had gone. But now, thanks to his own persistence, not to mention some eyecatching performances when he grabbed his unexpected opportunity, the 32-year-old could yet be part of the Sussex squad as talks continue about signing him for 2014.

Although he was born in Pakistan, Ash is now a UK citizen having married an English girl and settled in Manchester so there was no problem with qualification. So he fired off an email to all 18 counties outlining his achievements for Accrington and his firstclass record in Pakistan, where he last played in 2009.

At the end of August, ‘Ash’, as he became known in the dressing room, finished an outstanding summer for Lancashire League champions Accrington when he broke Australian legend Bobby Simpson’s club record for the most runs in a season which had been set back in 1959.

It’s fair to say his inbox wasn’t flooded with responses, but Durham and Sussex did get back to him and within an hour Sussex Club Coach Mark Davis had asked him to play in a 2nd XI friendly against Durham at Preston Nomads three days later.

Former Sussex fast bowler Yasir Arafat was among those who urged their compatriot to seek trials with county clubs having seen what he was capable of, albeit at a lower level. In recent years he has played club cricket all over the north including the Bolton, Huddersfield and Staffordshire leagues.

So Ash got in his car, headed to Sussex and in front of Davis and Academy Director Keith Greenfield he smashed 192 not out and took six wickets. A week later, having been told by his coaches that Zaidi was worth a further look, Mark Robinson gave him his Championship debut against Yorkshire when he scored 17 and took four wickets with his left-arm spin. He

kept his place in the side for the season’s finale against Durham when he scored 45 before a broken spinning finger curtailed his involvement in the field. Robinson explained: “We see him as someone similar to Samit Patel, who can give us runs in the middle order and keep an end tied down with the ball. He has really taken to the other lads and is a bubbly presence in the dressing room. I think he could make a contribution for us next season and hopefully we can sort something out.” Zaidi is hoping to have an opportunity to carve out a career in county cricket, even at a relatively late stage of his career. He said: “I think I’ve done enough to show Sussex what I’m capable of and how experienced I am. “I’ve got a few more years in me to play at this level and make a living out of it. This is what I’ve worked for over the last three to four years since I’ve been here permanently especially this year I’ve worked really hard on my game and my technique.”

A WINTER WITH ENGLAND …

M

att Prior has been named as Alistair Cook’s vice-captain for this winter’s Ashes tour to Australia, when England will be looking for a fourth successive series victory. Also making the trip Down Under this winter is Chris Jordan. His outstanding first season for Sussex, which included 59 Championship wickets, was rewarded with an England ODI debut against Australia in September and he will be

heading there in November as part of the England Performance Squad. Arriving on November 14, they will shadow the Test squad and be based in Brisbane and Perth. The playing component of the tour will comprise three three-day fixtures. England will choose their squad for the five ODIs and two T20 internationals in January later this year.

… AND WITH SCOTLAND

M

att Machan faces a hectic winter with Scotland commitments taking him to three different countries.

Matt is in the squad for November’s T20 World Cup qualifying tournament in Dubai and Sharjah when they will face seven games. The event is preceded by a training camp at the end of October in Sri Lanka. After Christmas, the Scots will travel to New Zealand for the World Cup (50 overs) qualifying tournament in February.

Joe and Andy released

J

oe Gatting and Andy Miller have both left the county as they were not offered new contracts.

Both endured frustrating summers when their appearances in the first team were limited. Andy, 26, played five matches - one Championship, one t20 and three YB40 - after arriving on a one-year deal following his release by Warwickshire last winter. Joe (pictured) has spent five years at the club after being taken on when he quit football following his release by Brighton and Hove Albion. The 25-year-old from Brighton played 130

games across all three formats and played 13 matches across all formats during the 2013 season. Sussex coach Mark Robinson said: “It is always a sad time when we release any player but both Joe and Andy are still young and we hope a change of environment will help them fulfil their potential. “They have been model professionals and we would like to thank them both for their hard work and commitment they have shown during their time here at the club. We wish them both all the best for the future.”

PLAYERS AGREE NEW DEALS

W

icketkeeper-batsman Callum Jackson has signed a new one-year contract with Sussex. The 19-year-old has come through the Age Group squads…Harry Finch, 18, has been awarded a new two-year contract as he prepares to join the England U-19s for a tri-series in the UAE…. Matt Machan, who has been part of the Sussex set-up since 13, has agreed a new two-year deal…. On the day before he got married, James Anyon signed a new two-year contract…. Left-armer Chris Liddle has signed a new two-year contract.

The highs and lows…

FtSe

2013 was a summer of ups and downs for the team. Professional Cricket Manager Mark Robinson assesses the season and outlines what needs to be done to make 2014 more successful Q We finished by beating the champions and winning at Hove. How important was it to end on a high?

said that, we have got to play better on different types of surfaces as the game at Durham demonstrated.

A It was nice to end with a win

Q How do you assess the season overall?

because you take some positives into the winter. It was also nice to win at Hove. We haven’t done well here and it probably cost us the chance of winning the Championship. We have a fantastic groundsman in Andy Mackay - the best in the country - and he works so hard to try and help us by preparing the pitches we like. Our square is changing in its nature but the wicket we had for the Durham and Nottinghamshire games is the blueprint for us because it offered good pace and carry. It suited us because we have got bowlers with good pace in our attack and batsmen who like to put their hands through the ball. Having

A There are a few regrets, particularly that we played poorly in the T20 and YB40. We might have qualified in the YB40 had we not had three games rained off but to only win once in T20 was hugely disappointing, although not through a lack of effort. We challenged for two-thirds of the season in the Championship then fell away a bit which is frustrating. We had a strange fixture list in which we played very little in April and August and most of our games on the bounce in May, June and July. It was a heavy schedule and we ran out of gas a little bit. We probably played some of our poorest cricket all on the bounce, there was a period when we didn’t play well in July and the start of August. We stopped thinking clinically and clearly. There was a panic around the place, a feeling that the wheels had come off but I can assure you that we didn’t feel that as a squad. We

knew we were close to playing good cricket again and in the last few weeks of the season we did. We got back that sense of perspective that you need to make sure the lows aren’t too low and the highs too high. The issues with Monty Panesar were obviously unsettling but both parties have moved on and we wish him all the best for his future.

Q How did you find the season personally? A It has had its trials and tribulations but I’ve done the job since 2006 so I get used to the dramas! I remember having to pick Mushy up from the back of an airport to avoid him being hounded at the gate by the media because he was being accused of murdering Bob Woolmer! Dramas happen but with experience you learn to cope. Fortunately, I have a good staff around me and they have done a great job along with the players. We’re already planning for next season and we hope it’s a successful one, not least for the members and supporters who have been so supportive again this season. >>

“We are making a steady improvement from fifth to fourth to third in the last three years in the Championship. The challenge for 2014 is now to go one better and, of course, to play better white ball cricket than last year.” Autumn 2013 | 37

Q How do you feel Ed Joyce did as captain? A He’s been magnificent, both as a player and a leader. He gave us a calmness and authority and has been a pleasure to work with. Ed has coped with a busy summer really well. The captain often earns his corn in ways that aren’t often seen and that has been the case with Ed. He has shown his control in the dressing room and as our public face on the field and still managed to have a fantastic season with the bat so all credit to him. Q What changes are likely to the squad in 2014? A As the Chief Executive has made clear already, my budget is frozen so if anything I have to try and save money rather than spend it. We have to use the money available as cleverly as we can. We are looking for an all-rounder, especially now Monty Panesar has gone, to balance up the squad. I don’t think you necessarily need a top-class spinner to win the Championship – Durham have shown that and remember we had three seamers take 50 wickets which was an outstanding effort. We know what we need to improve and identified what we need in terms of personnel but as always whether we can sign them depends on a lot of things falling into place. Q What are the ambitions at this stage for next season?

A I sense an expectancy around Sussex that we should always be doing well and winning trophies but sometimes you can’t live up to that. I feel we are still an emerging team with a core of senior players and some younger ones who are still learning. I don’t think there is a lot to choose between top and bottom in Division One. If you can keep your key players fit, get some momentum and find a level of consistency you will always be close. We are making a steady improvement from fifth to fourth to third in the last three years in the Championship. The challenge for 2014 is now to go one better and, of course, to play better white ball cricket than last year.

The squad won the Team of the Year award while batsman Paige Scholfield won the Outstanding Performance award for her three hundreds in two days at the T20 regional final. The women’s Player of the Season went to all rounder Arran Brindle who performed in all facets of the game as well as taking on the captaincy a number of times at the last minute while the Players’ Player of the Year, which was voted for by the team, was won again this year by Georgia Elwiss who also took the batting award. Senior player, Alexia Walker, won the bowling award as well as the Charlotte

Sussex manager, Terry Burton, who has been involved with the Sussex WCA for more than 22 years, won The Outstanding Contribution to Sussex WCA award. Charlotte Burton, the director of Sussex Women’s cricket, said: “The evening was a great success and a great way to have all the players, junior and senior, along with parents, the Sussex Cricket Board and the Sussex Cricket Club there to end a fantastic season and look back at one of the best summers we have had in while.”

Sussex take two OSCAs

ight volunteers were awarded with a NatWest Outstanding Service to Cricket Award (OSCA) at Lord’s in September with two of the honours going to Sussex.

Azam Riyard, from Crawley Eagles CC, won the Building Partnerships Award for his excellent work in using cricket as a tool to integrate Crawley’s communities. Peter Butter won the Leagues and Boards category for his huge contribution to the management and development of the Sussex Cricket League.

Sussex held their own County OSCAs the previous week, with the following taking home awards: Behind the Scenes: Geoff Brailey (Burgess Hill CC) Building Partnerships: Azam Riyard (Crawley Eagles CC) Groundsman (Sussex Award): Graham Gardner (St James Montefiore CC) Leagues & Boards: Peter Butter (Sussex Cricket League) Lifetime Achiever: Mick Waghorn (Bexhill CC) NatWest Cricket Force: Gordon Pells (Crowhurst Park CC) Officials: Ian Farrell (Sussex Cricket League) Young Volunteer: Will Burrows (Middleton CC)

Mick Waghorn was also shortlisted in the top three of the Lifetime Achievement category for his voluntary contribution to Bexhill Cricket Club and the wider Bexhill and Hastings cricket community, spanning more than 50 years. Sussex Cricket Board Head of Cricket Development, Tim Shutt, said: “I am delighted to see Peter and Azam’s outstanding service to the recreational game recognised in such a way. All of the Sussex winners, and the other 85 nominees, deserve huge credit for continuingly giving up their time to allow others to enjoy their cricket experience. Without the commitment of our thousands of volunteers in cricket in Sussex, the game simply would not survive”. T

he summer of 2013 was a long but memorable one for me as I got to represent England as well as Sussex in the job I love. Having been the voice of T20 for the last seven years and Sussex cricket since 2001 it was still a big moment to talk to spectators in the Test match arena. Add in the Champions Trophy and several Sussex games and it was a long summer where I covered plenty of miles. The year started with Sussex’s Championship game against Warwickshire and the full house YB40 against Worcestershire followed by the romp over Somerset and victory against Kent, both at Horsham It was then off to the Champions Trophy, something I was always scheduled to do. Now while I would suggest there are a lot harder things to do than my job one of the downsides is the time away from home and the travelling – it’s not good for the social life. During the Champions Trophy, a coach took the strain by ferrying the event staff from Cardiff to Edgbaston to the Oval. While most people are used to 6am starts I am not but each day we were up at that time to get to our next venue and that made for some long days and after two weeks there were some tired people on that coach! For me personally it was hard as I also had to concentrate for up to 100 overs each day and that meant it was a gruelling few weeks. During that time it became apparent that my great friend and colleague Johnny Dennis had been unwell. JD has been the voice of Lord’s and Test match cricket for 34 years and I have become good friends with him over the last five or six years and learned a lot from him. It soon became apparent that Johnny would not be well enough to work during the Ashes series so I stepped in. Despite doing hundreds of games for Sussex, numerous domestic finals days and England limited over matches it was still hard not to be nervous and I was! Trent Bridge was a very special occasion and great to be part of. I could do 5,000 Test matches and never see a finish like that. There were nerves, but I got through without too many problems. As for Lord’s and the second Ashes Test, that was a different level. The great buzz I experienced at the home of the cricket on the first morning is something that will never leave me. It was great that JD was well enough to sit alongside

The view from Graham’s seat at Lord’s during the second Test

“I could do 5,000 Test matches and never see a finish like that. There were nerves, but I got through without too many problems” me on the first morning, although by now he had accepted that illness would prevent him playing a part in the series. The series moved on to Emirates Old Trafford, Durham and then the Oval. The Oval was a strange Test match as I lost my voice because I couldn’t shake off a cold that had been affecting me. This allowed Johnny a final swansong as he was well enough to cover for me on the Saturday, although rain sadly prevented any play. I was pleased to return for the drama of the Sunday and the celebrations that followed as England completed their 3-0 series win. That was followed by the one-day series and the Yorkshire Bank 40 final at Lord’s before I returned to domestic duties at Hove for the last few days of the season. Overall I travelled 10,000 miles during the summer and that doesn’t include the month of June that was spent in a coach. Most of those miles were, of course, covered during the Friends Life T20, working at all the live games on Sky Sports. It’s a competition I remain very fond of.

On a typical Test match day I would arrive at 8.30am in time for the gates opening at 9. Before the first day I would have had a look around the ground to familiarise myself. I would start announcing at 9.30am and the build-up reached its peak when I introduced Sean Ruane to sing Jerusalem just before the start of play. The one thing that you do need is concentration, as you need to watch every ball (particularly now with DRS). Believe me, it can be hard not to leave your seat! Lunch and tea means plenty of talking and introducing highlights packages and adverts. Throughout the day I regularly check Cricinfo to see what is happening in the Sussex games and I’m pleased to say Sussex won five of the eight games I covered. I must be a lucky charm. I’m very lucky to have the job I do but it’s not great on the social life and at times can be lonely, but it is great fun. Next year will be my 16th year at Hove (if I’m invited back) and I again hope to combine it with international cricket too.

Museum

An action-packed year Jon Filby reports on another busy season for the trustees and volunteers who run our fantastic museum

Members of the 2003 Championship-winning squad were back together in August at a lunch to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Sussex’s first title

I

t has been another action packed year for the trustees and volunteers of the Sussex Cricket Museum. In addition to running the museum, we have also been very busy organising the Sussex Cricket Combined Appeal in partnership with our sister charity Sussex Cricket in the Community Trust. We have had some wonderful events which have not only marked important landmarks in the club’s history but have also helped hugely towards raising the funds we need to develop interactive exhibits in the museum and create an exciting learning environment for use by schools and clubs from all across Sussex. We have celebrated the lives of those two much loved and revered sons of the Sussex cricket family, Tony Greig and Christopher Martin-Jenkins. We marked the visit of the Australians with a memorable Museum Dinner with Darren Lehmann and were thrilled when Darren accepted our invitation to become an Honorary Patron of the Sussex Cricket Museum. We had a day to remember with all seven living members of our Gillette Cup winning team of 1963 and a superb lunch to mark the 10th Anniversary of our first County Championship win. Meanwhile, our hard-working and ever

50 | 2013 Autumn

“How lucky we are to have such a fantastic heritage and so many wonderful Sussex artefacts on display.” popular curator, Rob Boddie, has worked with our friends from the Imperial War Museum to develop an exhibition that has received plaudits from around the world and most notably from Alan Lee in The Times. The Australians featured strongly with artefacts from their early visits in the 1880s through to Arthur Smallwood’s magnificent photographs of the 1968 and 1972 matches. Rob has also created a cabinet in tribute to Maurice Tate and the Langridge family and, in August, we were so pleased to host a visit from the Langridge family who have been so helpful in giving us family items for our collection. We were also very proud to have a visit from members of the Tate family who attended the launch of Justin Parkinson’s marvellous book about Maurice, “Then Came Massacre”. How lucky we are to have such a fantastic heritage and so many wonderful Sussex artefacts on display.

It is always motivating for us when former players visit the Museum and this year our visitors have included John Snow, Tony Buss, Rupert Webb, Alan Oakman, Ian Thomson, Jim Parks, Peter Graves, Johnny Barclay, Alan Green, Roger Marshall, Paul Phillipson and Ted Dexter. Throughout the close season our volunteers will be very busy working on cataloguing the collection, and working on a pictorial history of Sussex Cricket to be published next summer to mark the 175th anniversary of the foundation of Sussex CCC and on preparing for the 2014 Exhibitions. We meet most Thursdays and anybody with an interest in Sussex cricket is welcome to join us. Please contact jonfilby@blueyonder. co.uk for more details. Finally, everybody is welcome to attend our Annual Bookfair which is this year being held in the Montefiore Hospital Boundary Rooms on Sunday 17th November from 9am.
