Welcome to Hove
By Zac Toumazi, Chief Executive
Night moves: The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground looks at its spectacular best as dusk falls here last Friday
A
nother explosive start to the T20 season! Were we expecting anything less? What a match to get this season’s campaign underway last Friday here at Hove. It seems an age away now but it was a nail-biting affair last week against our neighbours Surrey, a match that kept us guessing right until the final over of the match. Unfortunately for us the visitors came out on top but it’s exactly the sort of thrilling game that we’ve come to expect in this tournament. And how good it was to banish the memories of Friday evening with victory on Sunday! Lord’s has been a really happy hunting ground for us in recent seasons in T20 and the weekend win was no different. It was really pleasing to see us make the first 200-plus score of the tournament with some sensational batting from Luke Wright, Chris Nash and Rory Hamilton-Brown at the top of the order. The bowlers very much earned their corn too and Mike Yardy’s three wickets was the highlight of the Middlesex run chase which fell well short, not mentioning three incredible catches in the outfield! Tonight is ‘Derby Day’ – with all the counties around the circuit playing their nearest rivals. In our case this could mean one of three counties in the South Group! But it’s Hampshire who we welcome here for our local derby. We know what to expect from our neighbours and as the holders of the trophy it would be a real fillip to our chances should we get a win under our belts
tonight against a quality outfit when we’re still early on in the tournament. You may have seen footage this week of our very own Scott Styris taking on Hampshire’s Danny Briggs in a game of a skittles recently to promote Derby Day! I can tell you that the rivalry was just as fierce as it will be out in the middle this evening! They are both pictured on tonight’s front cover. We’re looking forward to welcoming another big crowd to The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground this evening as well as our visitors from over the border and we really hope you enjoy the T20 experience.

Look who’s back! Dwayne Smith is congratulated by his team-mates after taking Vikram Solanki’s wicket against Surrey last Friday
JUST ONE SIX PLEASE SMITHY….
All-rounder Dwayne Smith insists the support of the Sharks fans made his decision to return to Sussex an easy one. By Howard Griggs, The Argus
7 The support of Sharks’ fans made Dwayne’s decision to return an easy one
L
ook around the BrightonandHoveJobs. com County Ground tonight and you might spot someone to thank for Dwayne Smith’s return. The popular West Indian is back at Hove this summer for a second stint as our T20 gun for hire. It was an easy decision for Dwayne to make when Sussex approached him when they were looking for someone to replace Australia allrounder John Hastings who withdrew due to injury. And it seems the support Dwayne received from Sharks’ fans during his first stint at Hove had a big bearing on his decision to come back. Smith said: “When you are playing at home, it is great to have that support of the fans. “Looking back I had a group of about 20 or so youngsters who would say to me, ‘Smithy, it doesn’t matter whether you get out or not, just hit one six for us’. It is good to have that backing of the crowd, it is fun and it is giving them something back to make them proud. “To make it simple, there is no team in England that would get me before Sussex, as long as Sussex want me.” Smith first arrived at Hove in 2008 and his powerful batting, electric fielding and deceptive bowling soon made him a hit with supporters. In 2009 his match-winning unbeaten 59 helped Sussex to victory over Somerset in the final but two years later a change in the Kolpak rules meant he was unable to help the Sharks defend the trophy. It was such a shame as Smith had given everything to the Sussex cause and was even prepared to turn his back on a return to the
West Indies to commit his future to Sussex. Coach Mark Robinson said he wanted a bowling all-rounder when Hastings pulled out but the opportunity to bring back Smith as the second overseas player just had ‘right decision’ written all over it. Since he was last here the 30-year-old has returned to the international fold, having represented West Indies in World T20 last year. He believes he has added another dimension to his game since that first spell. The Barbadian said: “I was disappointed about not being able to stay (last time) but I have always been Sussex at heart, have always followed them from afar, hoping they are doing well. “Since I was here, I probably know myself a lot better, know what to do now more in games. I have been making some proper selections when it comes to playing shots. It is good and hopefully I can continue that.
“I have always been Sussex at heart, have always followed them from afar” “Opening the batting (as he did in the IPL) makes you look at your game a lot more. It takes a lot more patience and more thinking. It has done a lot for me and hopefully I can bring it into my game at Sussex, even if I am batting down the order.” Smith likes the make-up of the Sussex t20 squad this summer, including his former teammate at Deccan Chargers in the Indian Premier League, Scott Styris. He said: “When I heard they had asked Scott to come over (last year), I said straight away it was a good choice. He proved that with good performances right throughout the tournament last year. “We have a very good side this year. We have Rory Hamilton-Brown and Chris Jordan who have been doing well so far this season in other formats of the game “We have a lot more youngsters too. We just need to get ourselves out of the South Group first and then we can look at things from there.”

SHARKS FRUSTRATED Surrey hold nerve in tense finish

S
ussex’s Friends Life T20 campaign began with a 10-run defeat to Surrey in front of a 6,400 crowd at the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground last Friday. After the visitors had won the toss, opener Jason Roy made 42 from 33 balls as Surrey were restricted to 157 for 6 thanks to some fine bowling by Dwayne Smith (2 for 11) and Chris Liddle (2 for 19), although neither bowled their four overs. The Sharks looked on course for victory with Rory Hamilton-Brown (34), Scott Styris (35) and Mike Yardy (44) guiding them to 139 for 5 with two overs remaining. But Azhar Mahmood conceded just four runs from the penultimate over and Jade Dernbach the same from a brilliant last over to finish with 3 for 15 as Sussex closed on 147 for 7. ROBBO’S VERDICT: “It was a great game and with three overs to go we were favourites but small margins decide these games and we dropped two catches in their innings which proved crucial.”

Controversy at the Castle
Chris Adams and Matt Prior had the last laugh as Sussex beat Hampshire in a controversial T20 game at Arundel seven years ago
Sussex and Hampshire had some explosive meetings in the last decade, including one at Arundel
W
hen Chris Adams and his Hampshire counter-part Shane Warne used to lock horns as rival captains a controversy was never far away. Neither captain would yield an inch when Sussex and their neighbours did battle but Warne wasn’t even playing when another row was stirred up when Sussex took a T20 match away from Hove for the first time. The teams met at Arundel Castle in the opening match of the 2006 tournament with Sussex giving competition debuts to all-rounder Sean Heather and off-spinner Ollie Rayner. But it was the most experienced member of their side – the indefatigable Mushtaq Ahmed – who kept Hampshire in check after Adams had won the toss and inserted the visitors. Mushy took 4 for 30, including opener Michael Carberry for 43, and it needed Greg Lamb’s unbeaten 55 from 35 balls to help the Hawks (as they were known then) to 152 for 6 from their 20 overs. On a good pitch and with small boundaries Sussex fancied their chances of a successful chase and had reached 59 for 1, with opener Matt Prior going well, when the bad blood between the teams spilled over again. Prior was run-out by Chris Benham at the nonstriker’s end while most attention was on the other end where Adams had just survived a loud appeal for a catch off Dominic Thornely. It was a bump ball sent to mid-on. Prior appeared to be asking for
a new pair of batting gloves and was certainly not attempting a run. Technically, the ball was not dead and Benham was within his rights to throw down the stumps and appeal, but Adams told his opposite number Shaun Udal, Hampshire’s skipper in Warne’s absence, that they should have called Prior back. Adams said: “It’s poor form as far as I’m concerned. It’s a bit like a bowler running out the non-striker by not letting the ball leave his hand as the batsman backs up. The appeal should have been withdrawn but there seems to be a bit of an atmosphere when we play Hampshire at the moment. “They try to play aggressive, intense, in-your-face cricket in the style of their captain Shane Warne. The funny thing being that Warney wasn’t even playing that night.” Adams made 42 and although Sussex lost a flurry of wickets, an unbeaten 26 from Luke Wright – who batted at No.7 that night – saw Sussex to a four wickets win with five balls to spare. Wright faced just nine balls and hit five fours. Although Sussex won four of their eight group games they failed to qualify for the quarter-finals, with Essex, Surrey and Kent going through. Essex and Surrey lost in the semis and it was Leicestershire who won the tournament for the first time, beating Nottinghamshire by four runs in the final at Trent Bridge. Bruce Talbot

THE WRIGHT STUFF! Luke leads the way to Lord’s victory
Blast off: Luke Wright hit 81 to set up victory over the Panthers
L
uke Wright continued his excellent T20 form with a blistering 81 off 49 balls as the Sharks bounced back from their opening-night defeat with a 24 runs win over Middlesex at Lord’s on Sunday. Wright hit 10 fours and two sixes and shared in stands of 84 for the first wicket with Chris Nash (45) and 72 for the second with Rory Hamilton-Brown, whose 47 continued his outstanding recent form. It took the Sharks to 202 for 3 from their 20 overs and they bowled tigerishly to defend the total on a good pitch, restricting the Panthers to 178 for 8 in reply. Mike Yardy, who opened the bowling, took 3 for 30 as Middlesex lost four wickets for 24 after reaching 101 for 1 in the 13th over. Dawid Malan had made 61 from 43 balls in a stand of 64 with Paul Stirling (33) for the first wicket that was the highlight of the reply while Chris Nash and Will Beer made it a good day for the spinners with a wicket apiece and Joe Gatting held a sensational one-handed boundary catch.

STILL GOING STRONG
Neil McKenzie is hunting more T20 success this summer with Hampshire Royals
N
eil McKenzie insists he will keep playing for Hampshire as long as he is scoring runs and winning trophies. The South African has no intention of retiring just yet and who can blame him after the success he has enjoyed in the last year. Two months after helping the Hampshire Royals to a second Friends Life t20 title in three years, McKenzie reached the final of the Champions League T20 with the Highveld Lions before finishing the 2012-13 season by winning South Africa’s domestic T20 competition for the first time. The 37 year-old could have retired on a high, but he is available to Hampshire for the rest of the season and is not ruling out a fourth stint with the county in 2014. “It’s gauging where I am and how the body is but at this stage it’s three months flat out contributing as much as I can, making as many runs as I can and hopefully being involved with finals like we have done in the last couple of years,” he said. “It makes the season go a lot quicker if the enjoyment factor is right up there like last year, which was a fantastic time for me. “Success keeps the enthusiasm up, it’s about winning trophies and doing well for the team. If you’re not winning, the enjoyment wanes, warm-

ups become a little longer and that puts you in a negative space. “But that’s not been the case for the last 18 months. If I was 43 I would have walked away at the end of last season, but as long as I’m contributing in the changing room and on the field I’ll continue. “Hampshire have made me feel very valued, we keep chatting and it’s all positive at this stage. I like to take it season by season – it’s flexible both ways.” McKenzie had not played at all since the Ram Slam T20 Challenge final at the beginning of April when he returned to the Ageas Bowl earlier this month. “The rest has done me good,” said the former Test opener. “I’ve been watching how the Hampshire boys have been going online, my wife gives me abuse if I’m on there at 11 at night but gives me a high five if one of the lads does well! “Having a bit of a break did me the world of good last year and it was good to take a few weeks off. “It was a long season last year - I went straight into the Champions League and a full season so it was good to rest the knees. “But after a family holiday I was looking forward to coming back.” Simon Walter

SOHAIL TANVIR
Q&A
Hampshire’s Pakistan fast bowler on why he is delighted to be playing county cricket for the first time You’ve been denied several opportunities to play county cricket before so it must have been a relief to finally sign for Hampshire? Yes, I couldn’t make it for Hampshire in 2008 because of the NOC (No Objection Certificate) problem or in 2009 for Kent and Surrey because of a visa issue. This is my first experience of county cricket so I’m very excited. I’ve played all over the world in South Africa, Australia and India but somehow, for some reason, I couldn’t make county cricket. Last year I signed with Worcestershire and couldn’t make that either, so I’m excited to be here. County cricket has a high standard so if you perform it means you are in good form. We don’t have any cricket back home at the moment so county cricket is the only platform for me to perform on and get back in the (Pakistan) team.
When I played street cricket my mates told me my action was quite different but I thought I was running in normally!
31 How tough was it to be left out of Pakistan’s Champions Trophy squad? When someone is dropped it’s always disappointing. It was hard sitting in the crowd when I saw their first game at The Oval, but that’s part and parcel of cricket. Sometimes you’re selected and sometimes you’re dropped but there’s healthy competition and that’s a positive sign for Pakistan cricket. You were the Bowler of the Tournament when you helped Rajasthan Royals win the inaugural Indian Premier League in 2008. How influential was Shane Warne’s captaincy? Playing under Shane Warne was the experience of my life. I’ve learnt a lot from him and he was the one who first suggested my name to Hampshire in 2008. Australia were very unlucky he couldn’t captain them. What experience of English conditions had you had before signing for Hampshire? I played a season of club cricket (for Haslington CC in the North Staffs and South Cheshire Premier League) in 2006 and played a couple of games for Pakistan at the World Twenty20 (at Lord’s in 2007) so I have some experience, but not too much. You’re the fourth Pakistan international to play for Hampshire in the last ten years. Did you speak to any of them before signing? I spoke to Shahid Afridi in Karachi in April and Abdul Razzaq and Wasim Akram so I’ve got information about the pitch and conditions which will definitely help me. All three had a good experience at Hampshire and said very good words about the management. I also know (Highveld Lions teammate) Neil McKenzie. Neil’s the funniest guy, he’s always joking in the dressing room, but when it comes to cricket he’s very intelligent. How did you develop your unique bowling action? No-one can build an action like it and no coach can suggest it to a youngster, but that’s how it is. I get injuries because of it but it gives me a lot of benefits as well, like the ability to bowl swing because it gets my wrist to finish in a certain position. But when I first saw it on TV I was surprised – seriously! When I played street cricket my mates told me my action was quite different but I thought I was running in normally! Then I saw it on TV and realised what they meant! But I’m happy the way it is.

Sussex soar: The celebrations begin after the Sharks won the trophy in 2009
KINGS OF THE SOUTH
Bruce Talbot reports on why in 10 years of T20 the strongest
Y
ou might not be watching the eventual winners of this season’s Friends Life T20 today but there is a good chance that whoever does lift the trophy at Edgbaston on August 17 will have emerged from the South Group. The southern six took a while to get a grip on the format. Surrey won the inaugural competition in 2003 but in the next three years the trophy was held aloft twice by Leicestershire and once by Somerset. But since Kent’s triumph in 2007, also at Edgbaston, teams from the South Group have held sway with only the Foxes’ third and totally
unexpected triumph in 2011 spoiling their dominance. Hampshire have won it twice and are this year’s defending champions while Middlesex and Sussex have also lifted the trophy and enjoyed the benefits of playing abroad as a result. The competitive nature of the South Group is reflected in the relatively similar records of the six counties, all of who had played 96 games going into this season’s 11th edition of the competition. Sussex lead the way with 52 wins ahead of Essex (49), Kent (47), Hampshire (46) and Surrey (45). Middlesex have only won 33 matches but Essex

sides have come from the south supporters would surely swap their wins’ record for the Panthers, given Middlesex’s triumph in 2008 at the Rose Bowl. In the first five competitions, Middlesex had only finished out of the bottom three once and only won ten games. In 2007 they won just two of their eight matches. But they haven’t been the only county who got on a roll early on and found a way to win even if their team wasn’t necessarily the strongest on paper. “We certainly weren’t favourites,” laughs Ed Joyce, the Sussex captain who led Middlesex to glory that year. “But I don’t think form counts for very much in Twenty20. So much depends on the day but
it helps if you’ve got a good balance to your team. I remember in pre-season it was certainly a big target of ours to do better in the T20 and we felt we had the players to do it. “Owais Shah was as talented a stroke-player as anyone around at the time and I remember he hit a brilliant 75 in the final which was probably the difference. We won eight games in the group stage and when you build momentum like that you do go into games thinking very positively about your chances.” Essex and Kent were two of the semi-finalists that year and in the ten tournaments since 2003, 17 >>

of the 40 places at Finals Day have been filled by South Group teams and ten since 2008. “With respect to the others, the south has always been the toughest to win or even qualify from,” said Sussex’s Cricket Manager Mark Robinson. “You often can only afford to lose two or three games if you want to qualify for the quarter-finals and it’s invariably the south that provides one of the best third-place teams who qualify for the knockout stages. “There are some big counties in the south. Surrey are the biggest club in the country because of their resources, Middlesex can get 20,000 for one of their games at Lord’s and Hampshire are another with a Test match ground. We are quite small by comparison but we have been competitive in T20 for a while now and our supporters expect us to do well in it.” Robinson’s players haven’t disappointed. In three of the last four years they were runners-up before topping the section last year and gaining the oftencrucial advantage of a home tie in the quarter-finals. Hampshire are another side with consistent form in recent seasons. They haven’t been out of the top three in the south group since 2009 after finishing bottom in both 2003 and 2007.
Twenty20 is big business now. Counties rely heavily on income from the games and in a good summer the revenue it generates can be the difference between a profit and loss. Players still regard the Championship as the blue riband competition but what’s not to like about appearing in front of a full-house on Finals Day, even if the bonus of playing in the Champions League has now been denied the counties.
