The Course The outcome of more than eighty years of golfing history is a 6,216 yard layout at Haywards Heath that demands accuracy and judgment rather than power. Picturesque, beautifully tree lined and well maintained are qualities that not all courses offer. Haywards Heath does. There are some testing elevation changes and views of the Weald and South Downs that are worth a moment’s pause before teeing up. Yardages are 6,216 off the medal tees (par 71), 6,002 yards off the yellow tees (par 71) and 5,494 yards off the ladies’ tees (par 72, with the long par-4 11th being played as a par-five). Standard scratch scores of 70, 69 and 72 respectively indicate that this indeed is a true test of golf.

Haywards Heath originally opened as a 9-hole course in 1922, the product of an enthusiastic local community and the imagination of the legendary master golfer of the era, James Braid. Many changes have occurred over the years, of course, and doubtless others will evolve over time. We continually strive to improve our course and believe it offers a pleasing blend of sheer golfing challenge and pure enjoyment. Our current design advisor is Tom Mackenzie of Mackenzie & Ebert who previously worked with Donald Steel and Company.

History The Early Years Haywards Heath Golf Club was the brainchild of Horace Finch, a local businessman who recognised the need to provide improved leisure facilities in a town that was starting to see an influx of new residents from London enticed by the benefits of living in the countryside. Finch bought Round Wood, some surrounding grazing land and two 18th century barns, which rejoiced in the name of Fatting Hovel. The barns became the clubhouse and a nine-hole course was laid out with the help of Major I.G.H. Stenborough, a keen amateur golfer. The club was officially opened on Saturday, 27th May 1922. The annual membership subscription was six guineas (ÂŁ6.30). It soon became apparent that nine holes was not enough so James Braid, a five-time winner of the Open 08 www.haywardsheathgolfclub.co.uk

Championship as well as a renowned golf course architect, was called in to advise on the extension of the course. Three holes to the south of the clubhouse were abandoned and instead additional land was leased from Col. G.H. Stephenson Clarke, owner of the Borde Hill Estate and Lord Denman’s Balcombe Estate. Apart from the horses and carts used to move the earth, all the work was done by hand. The new 18-hole course was opened on June 3, 1924. Braid opened the course by playing in a four-ball exhibition match with the famous Harry Varden as his partner, against the Club Pro, George Stephenson, and Herbert Risborough from Littlehampton. The latter pair returned a better-ball score of 68, but it was no match for the 66 recorded by the two stars.

Through the War Years In order to have a greater say in the running of the Club, members decided to buy it from Horace Finch. Haywards Heath Golf Club Limited was set up, purchasing the Club in 1927 and financing it by the issue of shares and debentures to members. A figure of £7,500 was agreed for the clubhouse and the land originally owned by Finch. Colonel Stephenson Clarke and Lord Denman agreed to extend leases on their land. Although membership rose steadily through the 1930’s and after the end of World War II, the Club’s finances remained on a knife edge right up to the 1960’s. Fortunately, the Club had sympathetic landlords. Lady Denman came to the rescue with offers of cash to cover

urgent expenses, and on occasions agreed to forego rent. Colonel Stephenson Clarke also provided financial aid and further assistance by cutting rent on his land. Another benefactor was Sir Henry Price, of Wakehurst Place, who frequently made donations and loans to cover the Club’s deficiencies. During World War II part of the course had to be ploughed up for agricultural use - by 1942 only 10 holes were still in play. German prisoners of war were employed to restore the course between 1946 and 1948. By the 1960’s the Club’s accounts began to show a modest profit. Debentures issued in the early days were redeemed and in 1967 there was sufficient capital for the Club to take the important step to acquire the area of the course previously leased from the Borde Hill Estate. www.haywardsheathgolfclub.co.uk 09

History continued... The club to date In 1974 the present members’ club, Haywards Heath Golf Club, was formed. Subscriptions and entry fees were raised and at last the annual accounts began to look healthier. In 1980 the Club was able to afford to buy additional land from the Borde Hill Estate to create what is now the 8th hole. Former Ryder Cup player, Bill Cox, was brought in to handle the re-design of the course and the construction of the new holes and greens. A completely new hole (the current 8th) was created and the 11th, 12th and 13th holes were lengthened and re-designed.

In addition, further development of the course was made possible when members provided capital through a compulsory loan scheme. The resulting revised course was brought into play in 1982 with a Charity Pro-Am Tournament. The Club has increased its land ownership in recent times. In 1997 it bought the freehold of the land encompassing the 5th green and 6th tees, previously leased from the Denman Estate. In 1998 the Club purchased 13.5 acres of land to the south of the 8th green.

Tour the Course Hole 1, 325 yards, par 4 Despite its benign looks, this hole demands either a long, bold drive or a more considered shot short of the looming bunkers on the left. A narrow green awaits. It is definitely not a “warm-up” hole! Hole 2, 317 yards, par 4 As with many holes at Haywards Heath, this steep, uphill fairway will test your cardiac fitness just a little, and your golf quite a lot. Our big beech tree on the left must be avoided, ideally with a slight draw. The uphill approach needs some care on account of the hidden green. Hole 3, 408 yards, par 4 This is a straight and longish par 4, with nearly all its challenges apparent from the tee. But the fairway is

12 www.haywardsheathgolfclub.co.uk

narrow at driving distance and the approach is a little longer and more exacting than it seems. Hole 4, 328 yards, par 4 The 4th is a thinking golfer’s hole. It is certainly not long but has a dogleg, which big hitters may choose to carry, before shaping up to the narrow, protected green. Hole 5, 295 yards, par 4 This hole appears straight, downhill and short - therefore easy! Well, maybe not. Don’t be distracted by the wonderful views over the Weald from this high point on the course. A constantly sloping fairway, and a green that has more break than you think, will soon reacquaint you with reality.

Hole 6, 400 yards, par 4 A tough par 4 with an uphill drive and plenty of trees to catch the unwary or the unfortunate. The last 100 yards is slightly downhill to an angled green. For good measure, the out-of-bounds is all the way down the right.

fairway to set up an approach or a bold shot to the green, in the hope that the pond, well stocked with flora and bird life, doesn’t capture your ball. This is a scenic and appealing hole, which can sometimes prove damaging to a medal score!

Hole 7, 128 yards, par 3 The 7th has quite a generous and level green, but a huge hollow and bank must be negotiated before you can think of taking out the putter. Keep an eye on the wind direction too.

Hole 9, 172 yards, par 3 This par 3 is our newest hole, rebuilt a few years ago. It is all carry over a lush little valley to a big green with deceptive undulations, offering lots of pin positions.

Hole 8, 499 yards, par 5 A big drive can be attempted between the trees onto an open fairway with a ridge 230 yards out. After that you have a choice - either a shot to the right side of the

Hole 10, 197 yards, par 3 The 10th is a second consecutive short hole, which is rare in course design. This one plays longer than its yardage, being considerably uphill, and there is no second chance if you drift right.

Tour the Course continued... Hole 11, 460 yards, par 4 The elevated tee on the 11th affords a wonderful panorama of the area. The driving challenge is also evident. A long drive may just let you look around the slight dogleg right and open up the second shot. Hole 12, 501 yards, par 5 The key shot is the second on this seemingly routine par 5, because a precise approach is needed to the narrow elevated green. Lots of trees, a huge laurel bush and the undulating fairway give this hole its character. If you are a big hitter, have a try at being up there in two.

Hole 13, 448 yards, par 4 This looks like a par 5, but only four strokes are allowed on this tough hole. Unless your drive is a little less than 240 yards or over 280 yards from the men’s tee, you are not going to see all of the pin or perhaps the fairway bunkers. Probably our most testing hole. Hole 14, 343 yards, par 4 Just avoid the huge oak tree on the right of the fairway on this appealing and straightforward hole - and don’t go over the back of the green.

Tour the Course continued... Hole 15, 382 yards, par 4 Heading for home now. The fairway is hardly visible from the men’s tee, but there is a distance marker guiding you between the trees left and right. In spring, this is one of our prettiest holes, but don’t be distracted - the green, which is set back near a hedge and the 14th tee, requires a confident approach. Hole 16, 470 yards, par 5 On this par 5 a wide hollow and ridge face you from the tee and a straight drive is needed. The hole flattens and opens out for the final 200 yards, but do not let your guard down because the green is narrow and unforgiving.

Hole 17, 214 yards, par 3 The 17th tee brings you once more to the highest point on the course, where you can enjoy the far-reaching view of the South Downs. This is a straight downhill par 3 with few obvious hazards, other than a bunker, hollows and a green that isn’t flat. Hole 18, 329 yards, par 4 This is a good-looking hole with beautiful trees along the fairway edge, but be careful not to hook towards the outof-bounds left. The 19th beckons, but only after you putt out on the elevated and sloping green set behind a huge diagonal bunker.

Playing Sections continued... The more mature members of the Club (over 55 years old) have an opportunity to play in the Sussex County Senior Inter-Club Foursomes Cyril Blake Cup, which is a countywide event played as Foursomes Matchplay. The Club has done well in the past in this competition and won the Plate in 1989, 1997 and 1999. Knock-out competitions play an important part of club life and comprise several competitions of different formats. They start in March and are played throughout the spring and summer months, culminating in a Knockout Finals day in September/October. Many social events and competitions are included in the Men’s Section’s programme. The Men’s Invitations are held in June and August. These popular events provide an opportunity for the members to invite friends from other

golf clubs to a competitive round of golf in a convivial atmosphere. The Captain v Vice Captain’s match is one of the social highlights of the men’s calendar, played in November. Ladies Section The Ladies’ Section, comprising approximately 150 members, is an active, sociable and friendly group. New lady members are always made most welcome and are quickly integrated into the Club. They meet every Tuesday throughout the year to participate in competitive as well as informal matches. Qualifying monthly medals are held from March to October and Stableford competitions are scheduled for the third Tuesday of each month.

Playing Sections continued... The Ladies’ Section is actively involved in County Division I, II and III competitions as well as friendly matches across the county. In addition, there are the Winter League competitions played against Copthorne, Mannings Heath and Ifield. For higher handicappers there are also opportunities to play friendly matches with lady golfers from other Sussex clubs. The Club has a Rabbits’ Section for ladies who are complete novices to the game. They meet on Monday afternoons, when they have the opportunity to play with a few more experienced ladies - an excellent opportunity to learn about the game in an informal, friendly setting. Seniors All men aged 55 and who are retired from full-time work are eligible to play in the Seniors Group. New members 32 www.haywardsheathgolfclub.co.uk

are always sure of a warm welcome. There is a small annual subscription. The Seniors have been part of the Club for more than 30 years, and individual members have made and continue to make considerable contributions to the running and the well-being of the Club. There are currently more than 90 members. The core golfing activity is a weekly stableford competition, played normally on a Monday morning. A comprehensive calendar of events includes the weekly stablefords, home and away matches against 18 other Sussex clubs, organised “away day” golf visits to other courses, matches against the Club and the Ladies Section, and joint competitions with the Ladies and with the Juniors.

Each year, the Seniors host a Team Invitation Meeting at Haywards Heath, when teams from clubs in Sussex, Surrey and Kent compete for a team trophy. Additionally, there is an annual Quadrangular Tournament, in which the Seniors of Haywards Heath, Piltdown, Crowborough Beacon, and Seaford contest the Leslie Southon Bowl and Fred Edwardson Salver. The Haywards Heath Seniors have won both trophies in recent years and will host this event in September 2014.

mixed competitions run throughout the spring and summer with a trophy on offer to the eventual winners of each.

There is a Christmas foursomes competition for which members turn out in force. This is followed by a lunch at which the Seniors entertain the President and the Club Captain. It is always a festive and highly enjoyable occasion!

A series of five events, known as “Mixed Foursomes” are held mainly on Saturday afternoons from April to October and are very well supported - often by more than 100 players, most of whom attend the Presentation of Prizes and Supper in the evening with their non-golfing partners. Another eagerly-anticipated annual event is the Wat-Rich Cup, played between the Ladies’ and Men’s sections of the Club.

Mixed Section Mixed golf events are an important part of Club life and are very well supported by the members. There are several

The Club plays mixed home and away matches against six other Sussex clubs on an annual basis, namely Copthorne, Holtye, Royal Eastbourne, Seaford Blatchington, Willingdon and Worthing. Some of these matches are played during the week - others at weekends. A convivial supper always follows the golf.

Juniors The Junior Section at Haywards Heath Golf Club forms a vibrant, active and enthusiastic division of the Club and is made up of more than 70 boys and girls. Both sections are ably organised by two adult club members. Their role is to provide a real source of encouragement and participation to the Juniors, helping them to develop their golfing skills, in conjunction with the professional coaching staff. At the same time they seek to foster in their charges a sense of responsibility towards the club and the course, as well as promoting their overall understanding of the game, which is renowned for the integrity and good sportsmanship of those who play. The organisers provide a structured programme of golf, principally during the school holidays. The Junior

competitions are published in the Club Diary. In addition, summer knockouts and eclectic competitions are arranged. The organisers also liaise with the county organisation and facilitate participation in county competitions and Open competitions at other clubs. Juniors with a handicap of 16 or better can participate in the club’s adult medal competitions and summer knockouts. The current standard of golf achieved by the club’s junior section is very impressive, with most having a handicap, and seven playing to a single-figure handicap. Many of our juniors feature prominently in the adult competitions and are selected to play for the county. The club welcomes new Junior members, aged 10 and over. The Haywards Heath Golf Academy We are delighted to offer Academy Membership at Haywards Heath Golf Club to beginners and those returning to golf. It is an excellent way to hone your golf skills and become involved in this thriving and friendly club. After an informal interview with the Membership Committee this membership will last for 12 months from date of joining. Membership is for one year only progressing to full membership with a reduced initial fee at the end of the year. The year is divided into four quarters to support the progression of Academy Members to Full membership. The individual is assigned to a specific professional for mentoring through the year with regular communication to make sure there are no problems.

Among the year’s benefits are two nine-hole lessons with a Club Professional and the opportunity to play nine holes with full members to begin the process of integration in to the main club. Membership also includes 30 nine-hole rounds (after 1pm) and really does represent tremendous value. In addition there will be optional regular Academy clinics with PGA staff throughout the year with free use of all the practice facilities and full social membership to the Club.

Visitors Whether you choose to play as an individual, with a group of friends or as a member of a society, we hope you have an enjoyable time both on the course and in the clubhouse. The club operates a policy where tee times are booked only for club competitions, golfing societies and matches. There are two starting tees, the 1st and 10th, and it is unusual for any wait before play.

Subject to course availability visitors are welcome at any time during the week and after midday at weekends. Players are requested to dressed in accordance with the club’s regulations, namely in recognised golfing attire and handicap certificates are required (maximum 28 for men and 36 for ladies). Fees must be paid prior to play and green fee tickets displayed on golf bags. On the course, only wide-wheeled trolleys may be used but please be aware that a possible electric trolley ban (unless with approved winter wheels) could be in force during the winter months depending on weather and course conditions. Visitors should always check reservations with the Professional Shop (01444 414866).

Clubhouse and Restaurant Enjoy a refreshing drink or a bite to eat before or after your round in our spacious and welcoming clubhouse. We are rightly proud of the 19th at Haywards Heath. It is a charming building parts of which date back to the mid19th century but which was also refurbished in 2003 to improve the facilities and increase the level of comfort. Inside our clubhouse can be found the aptly-named “The Barn” dining room, where members gather for more formal occasions such as club dinners or to enjoy the eagerly-awaited Sunday lunches for members and their guests held at least once a month and which are a popular part of club life.

There is a bright and spacious lounge as well as our more casual bar areas in the older part of the building where members and guests can gather to describe “the putt that got away”! A wide selection of beers and lagers, and wines and spirits and non-alcoholic drinks are available. The choice of food is also extensive, with guests able to enjoy meals in the dining room or simpler but equally filling snacks in the bar.

Social Activities At Haywards Heath, the social and non-golfing aspects are really important to us. We host informal Friday evening suppers (frequently with professional entertainment), apres-golf dinners following our very popular mixed events, and, of course, celebrate all the great seasonal functions such as Christmas and New Year in style. We take great pride in our reputation as a truly friendly club. Events such as quiz nights, themed food nights and jazz nights are also held at the club, but often we combine golf and social activities to enjoy the best of both worlds. The Men’s Annual Dinner and the Cyril James Dinner Cup is the highlight of the men’s golfing year with a black tie dinner on the last Saturday in October, followed by a

shotgun start foursomes stableford competition on the Sunday morning. Partners are drawn for this competition and the draw announced during the dinner. Pairs are auctioned off after the dinner with the bidding reaching fever pitch and the partnership’s golfing ability and stamina is tested the following morning in their quest to live up to expectations. It is a truly great Club event. The Ladies’ section is proud of its active social programme, which brings the members together for a wide variety of activities - fashion shows, informal Bridge, The Lady Captain’s Bridge Drive, treasure hunts and dinners, to name but a few.

How to Find Us Haywards Heath Golf Club is situated in West Sussex, two miles to the north east of the town centre and within easy reach of the South Coast, London and Gatwick Airport. For satellite navigation purposes, our postcode is RH16 1SL. Directions If you approach from the A23 you will enter the town along the A272. Immediately after passing a green on your left containing the war memorial, you will enter a one-way system forming a large square roundabout. Take the 2nd exit into the Broadway. Go straight over one roundabout and turn right at the next T junction into College Road. At the next mini roundabout turn left towards Ardingly into Portsmouth Lane. This becomes High Beech Lane and shortly after you will pass Roundwood Lane on your left and the next on your left is the entrance to the Club.

If you come from the south or east find the Sussex Roundabout on the A272 and take the B2112 to Lindfield. Take the 3rd exit off the next towards Lindfield. Fork left into Summerhill Lane towards Ardingly. Keep straight on this road for about a mile after which you will see the entrance to the Golf Club on your left. Public transport The nearest railway station is Haywards Heath, which is 1.3 miles away. The station is on the mainline to London and there are frequent services north to London and south to Brighton, Eastbourne and Worthing. The station is well served by taxis and we are only five minutes away.
