Welcome Hennerton Golf Club is a relaxed and friendly club with a unique and beautiful 18-hole parkland course hidden in the Berkshire countryside offering spectacular views of the Thames Valley and Berkshire Downs.
So many of the holes on the course have stunning views of the surrounding countryside stretching out for miles around that it is a pleasure to play here. The course will challenge all abilities of golfer: with many varied depths of field from narrow and wide undulating fairways, terraced tees and contoured greens; this is a course that relies on strategy and game planning. We are proud to have an integrated and social membership and are strong supporters of junior golf. Our commitment to developing the game for future generations has earnt us the prestigious GolfMark accreditation. Visitors are always made to feel welcome and you will find the clubhouse and its terrace a relaxing spot to enjoy delicious home-made food whilst looking back at panoramic views. The
course and its history
Hennerton Golf Club was opened by Bernard Gallagher in 1992 and began life as a nine-hole course. A Ryder Cup stalwart (eight appearances as a player and three as a non-playing captain), Gallagher was delighted with the beauty of the countryside and the advantages made of the natural variation of the hills and the valley in the design of the course. Players of all standards are impressed with the course’s challenges which are only matched by the outstanding views of the Thames Valley. The course designer of the original first nine holes was Colonel Dion Beard, a former secretary of Wentworth, who was also involved in the design of Sandford Springs. The club was privileged to have him as Honorary Chairman of the club until his retirement in 1999. The course was expanded to 18 holes and opened as such in 2006. The new part of the course, from the second to the tenth hole, was designed by international architects Gaunt & Marnoch. Their focus was to design a course which was sympathetic to the surrounding ancient woodland and its many protected inhabitants, whilst providing a space efficient layout within this beautiful valley.

course and its history continued...
The start of the new part of the course from the 2nd hole embodies all that is unique about Hennerton’s course: sensitive to the surrounding environment and a tricky layout. This hole has been built specifically with conservation in mind with the ponds created to protect the great crested newt, and a seemingly easy going layout which is in fact riddled with hidden hazards - the hollows and large bunkers to the right, and the lateral water defending the front of the undulating green. The large bunkers are characteristic of the front nine which is tucked within this mature parkland. From the terraced tees of the 5th and 7th holes you will find a wonderful surveying point of the countryside as the holes drop into the lush valley below. Whereas the greens of the 6th with its chalk backdrop and the 8th framed by the protected woodland will draw you back into the landscape. The signature hole is the 16th which is a par 3, 183 yards long crossing a sharp valley. Fondly known as Cardiac Hill, the green provides spectacular views of the landscape spanning from the Berkshire Downs to the Chilterns. At Hennerton there is an opportunity to sharpen up the short game and you will appreciate that course management and knowledge are paramount here; with the hidden hazards, contoured land and the greens that run fast and true but are full of deceptive little breaks and borrows. The majestic setting merely adds to the immense appeal. Play the course in the early morning as the mist rises off the pond by the second tee or late in the day as the sun begins to sink behind the hills and you will appreciate why this is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty.

The Head Professional and Golf Manager, Glenn Johnson, has been at Hennerton since 1993 having started his golfing career in 1991 at Drayton Park Golf Club. Glenn is ably assisted by Warren Harris, who joined us in April 2010 after being at Downshire Golf Complex and previously at Bearwood Golf Club as a school leaver in 2002.
The Pro-shop is the heart of the club and being located in the clubhouse it is perfectly positioned to welcome all players and visitors. As well as offering advice and their expertise, the professionals stock all the goods necessary for play: from balls and tees, to shoes, clothing and golf bags. Like a growing number of conscientious club professionals, Glenn is very much a believer in custom-fitting to make sure that rather than the golfer trying to fit themselves to a club, the club should fit the golfer. For those wishing to warm-up before their round, there is a covered and flood-lit seven-bay driving range situated to the left of the first tee. There is also a putting green by the clubhouse which mirrors the true surfaces found on the course. The driving range is open to visitors and is accessible until 10pm every day. Please note that there is no dress code associated with the driving range, however we advise the wearing of sports shoes.

The age range for junior applicants is 10-18 years, however, younger applicants are considered by the Golf Manager once an assessment has been carried out on their golf and enthusiasm. sections and competitions
New members are always made to feel most welcome at Hennerton Golf Club and we offer numerous opportunities to enjoy a round of golf either competitively or socially. At Hennerton we believe in a balance between club competitions and social golf. The emphasis is on integrating the membership as much as possible with drawn medals twice a month as well as social roll-ups to allow each section of the membership to mix together. This gives Hennerton its uniquely relaxed and informal club atmosphere. Social roll-ups are organised by the seniors on weekday mornings, the ladies on Tuesday mornings and on weekends the Saturday roll-up is a very popular opportunity to make new golf partners. During the summer months a Wednesday evening roll-up is organised with nine holes played in a variety of formats followed by a meal or barbecue. Hennerton also plays many interclub matches organised by all sectors of the membership: ladies, men, mixed and junior matches. The club also enters into national qualifiers and regional leagues. Throughout the year there are a number of club competitions offering the chance for silverware and the opportunity to have one’s name added to the club’s honours boards. These include Hennerton’s oldest competition, the Hearn Cup, and the pinnacle event of the year, the Club Championship - a 36-hole scratch competition, played for by men and ladies on a single day in June.

to find us
Hennerton Golf Club is conveniently located just outside Wargrave in Crazies Hill in Berkshire, around four miles from Henley-on-Thames down the A321, and with both Reading and Maidenhead respectively just eight miles away along the A4.
Directions From the A4 - Reading & Maidenhead From the A4, exit at the A321 Twyford/Wargrave roundabout, taking the A321 to Wargrave. From Wargrave High Street go straight through the set of traffic lights. At the end of the High Street turn right up Wargrave Hill. After Wargrave Manor, take the first left onto Crazies Hill Road. Hennerton Golf Club is at the top of this straight road on the left after 0.5 miles. From Henley-on-Thames Take the A321 to Wargrave. At the start of the village, take the first left just before the garage on to Wargrave Hill. Turn left again on to Crazies Hill Road and follow the road to find us on the left after 0.5 miles. Directions to Wargrave from the M4 From the M4 take J8/9. Take the 2nd exit onto the A404 signposted to Henley/Maidenhead. From the dual carriageway, take the 2nd junction - signposted Maidenhead. Take the first exit off the roundabout and follow the A4 straight over two roundabouts. At the 3rd roundabout (A321 Twyford/Wargrave), take the 3rd exit to Wargrave. Directions to Wargrave from the M40 Leave the M40 at Junction 4. Take the A404 towards Marlow. Leave the A404 at Henley. At the roundabout take the 2nd exit to Burchett’s Green. At the next roundabout turn right onto the A4 and follow the directions above.
