Welcome Lindfield Golf Club is set in picturesque countryside close to Haywards Heath in West Sussex.

European Tour and is a former PGA South Region coach of the year whose golf instruction gets results.

Our parkland course, designed by Patrick Tallack, was founded in 1990. Stretching to 5,957 yards off the white tees, it plays to a par of 70. There are some challenging holes, water hazards to negotiate and testing bunkers to penalise the wayward. But for all that there are birdie opportunities too and it is a fair and appealing test to players of all abilities.

Our flexible, friendly and welcoming approach means we are a popular destination for visitors and golfing societies. Our facilities and location also lend themselves superbly as a venue for special occasions such as wedding receptions or parties.

Paul Lyons, our Head Professional and Managing Director, has played on the

The clubhouse occupies a commanding position overlooking the entire estate. You can enjoy a fantastic day of golf at Lindfield then relax in the delightful

clubhouse and finish your day with a delicious meal in the restaurant. We are also home to the Golf College, whose aim is to help young golfers realise their dream of making a living from our great game. The one thing which will perhaps strike you above all else, however, is the friendliness of the members and clubhouse staff. A warm welcome always awaits you at Lindfield, it is something we pride ourselves on and you will instantly be made to feel part of our club, whether it is just for the day or for much longer.

The Course Lindfield Golf Club is a parkland course in the Sussex Weald founded in 1990 and designed by Patrick Tallack.

It presents well-drained fairways and greens and excellent year-round playing conditions maintained by our hardworking and expert greenkeeping staff.

The 18-hole layout stretches to 5,957 yards off the white competition tees with a par of 70 and a standard scratch score of 68.

It is surrounded by sites of outstanding natural beauty and is bordered on its southerly side by the River Ouse.

The course tests and rewards skilled golfers yet still enables the enthusiastic amateur to enjoy a good game.

There are water hazards to beware of on the 3rd, 8th, 13th and 18th. These take the form either of cunningly-placed

ditches ready to catch an under-clubbed approach to the green or ponds to punish those who stray off line. The finishing holes have every attribute: the 417-yard 14th is a character builder with a longish second shot to an elevated green with trouble down the right and the 413-yard 18th has a lake in front of the green.

Lindfield Golf Club | 7

Take the Course Tour We hope you enjoy your time with us at Lindfield Golf Club. Here are a few handy tips and course notes which should help you make the most of your round if you have never visited us before.

8 | Lindfield Golf Club

Hole 1, 384 yards, par 4 A straight drive will avoid the fairway bunkers left and right. There is no sand around the green, but be careful not to go long because that spells trouble, and favour the right side of the green with your approach.

Hole 3, 472 yards, par 5 Downhill par 5, giving you the chance to open your shoulders off the tee. There is a chance to reach the green in two when the ground is firm, but factor in the ditch that runs across just in front and to the right of the green.

Hole 2, 177 yards, par 3 Uphill, so take an extra club, particularly with the false front to the green. The very deep bunker to the left of the green should be avoided at all costs.

Hole 4, 326 yards, par 4 Back up the hill, with bunkers protecting the green both left and right. Take stock of where the flag is before choosing a club for your approach. The green is large and inviting but two-tiered and there is a chance of three-putting should you land on the wrong level.

Hole 5, 130 yards, par 3 Uphill, but generally with the prevailing wind. The shortest short hole of the round and arguably the one which offers the best chance of birdie. The front of the green is protected by a huge horseshoeshaped bunker and the putting surface itself is quite undulating. Hole 6, 501 yards, par 5 Another chance to go for distance off the tee, with a par five that is reachable in two in firmer conditions and with two perfect strikes. The green is fairly flat, but there is a bunker to the right.

Hole 7, 407 yards, par 4 Stroke Index 1 for good reason, this hole is appreciably uphill and it is difficult to hit the green in regulation, especially if coming in from the right side, which is protected by a bunker.

Hole 9, 215 yards, par 3 A long par three where accuracy is paramount, with a line of trees to the right of the fairway and the driving range, which is out of bounds, to the left. If the bunker front right is avoided, the green is large and inviting.

Hole 8, 400 yards, par 4 Pay particular attention to the ditch that runs across the fairway around 30 yards from the putting surface, particularly if you are not the longest hitter from the tee. A very large bunker behind the green catches anything over-hit.

Lindfield Golf Club | 9

Take the Course Tour Hole 10, 315 yards, par 4 An inviting tee shot to a wide, undulating fairway. Right centre of the fairway is ideal, so you can draw the ball in well away from the greenside bunker on the left. Hole 11, 269 yards, par 4 The easiest hole on the course offers a realistic birdie opportunity providing you do not flirt with the out of bounds on the right. It is a blind tee shot, so drive over the white marker post and choose the right club to hit the green below you.

10 | Lindfield Golf Club

Continued

Hole 12, 228 yards, par 3 An inviting green awaits at the bottom of the hill, until you realise this is a long par3 and not a short par-4! Out of bounds down the right, the approach narrows appreciably close to the green as well. Three is a good score on this hole. Hole 13, 323 yards, par 4 A sweeping dog-leg from left to right, all the trouble is down the right-hand side, so aim for the left centre of the fairway with a fade. A tree guards the right front of the green and there is a pond at the back, so be careful not to overclub.

Hole 14, 416 yards, par 4 A very long uphill par 4 that is difficult to reach in regulation and impossible if you find the traps on the left of the fairway. The bunker to the right of the green is challenging too and best avoided. Hole 15, 484 yards, par 5 Another fine long hole offering the chance to take out the driver. The green slopes from back to front. Avoid the greenside bunker front right and you should leave yourself with a birdie putt.

Hole 16, 179 yards, par 3 Another short hole where par is a good score. The green is protected by a bunker to the left and another front right. Even if you hit the green in regulation, the putting surface is extremely undulating and can yield some awkward putts.

Hole 17, 318 yards, par 4 Nearly home. Make sure of your strike to carry the ditch that runs in front of the fairway on this uphill par 4. Take enough club to hit the green above you, which is protected by tricky bunkers left and right.

Hole 18, 413 yards, par 4 A long par 4 back towards the clubhouse. The fairway is wide and inviting, but stay clear of the driving range down the right which is out of bounds. Right centre of the fairway is the ideal spot to draw in an approach which does not have to flirt with the water hazard to the front left of the green.

The Professional and Tuition The Managing Director at Lindfield Golf Club is Paul Lyons, a former European Tour player who has competed in tournaments all around the world, including The Open Championship at St Andrews.

Paul was also voted PGA South Region Coach of the Year in 2007, the same year he returned to the club to assume his current role, having originally begun his teaching career at Lindfield, or Paxhill Park as it was then known.

A former PGA South Region Captain and one-time coach to the Sussex under-16 squad, Paul has coached many up-andcoming young, aspiring golf professionals.

Weaker areas of a player’s golf game can be targeted and improved upon. The help and guidance of a PGA professional can turn what can at times be an immensely

frustrating sport into one where the casual player cannot wait for the next opportunity to get to the course. The fine practice facilities at Lindfield allow what has been learnt to be practised upon and ingrained and Paul would be delighted to put your driving and iron play in order.

Putting Guru Jason Gilroy Lindfield Golf Club has its very own putting and short game specialist available to help you make the absolute most out of your potential on the greens. Jason Gilroy is often referred to as the putting guru, and with good reason because his career has been devoted to finding ways of producing the best results with the flat stick. It was an exciting time for all concerned when Jason teamed up with Lindfield Golf Club in August 2011, returning to the club where he took his first steps to becoming a golf professional at the age of 11, and

where – just four years later – he won the club’s championship. Jason employs two cameras and the very popular V1 Pro video analysis software, widely used by tour players and coaches to analyse the putting stroke as well as capturing high-speed footage of ball roll. All video analysis is then available to watch using your own “on-line locker”, either at home on the PC or mobile phone whilst practising!

Skills tests and putting handicap tracking enable you to monitor your improvement and for existing clients there is the option to extend the tuition into short game coaching. To book your visit to Gilroy’s Golf, please either e-mail info@gilroysgolf.com or call us on 01444 450637 where we will be more than happy to discuss your requirements.

Members’ Golf Members at Lindfield can look forward to a wide selection of competitive golf throughout the year, both in competitions against fellow members and representing the club in fixtures across the county. Men Lindfield’s men play in The Sussex Golf Winter League which was initially known as the Ram Winter League and more recently has been sponsored by Lancing firm Parafix. There are four other teams in the league: Chichester, Hassocks, Mid-Sussex and Singing Hills, with home and away fixtures

played throughout the season, which runs from October to March. Matches are contested between five sets of pairs per side, and while winning is always enjoyable, this is secondary to the mutual enjoyment of the game of golf. Since its formation the league has worked hard to promote goodwill between the golf clubs involved.

The club are supporters of events organised by the Sussex Golf Union and enter a team in the Exclusive Golf Trophy, a knockout competition played throughout the summer months for higher handicap Category 2 and Category 3 players.

Medal and Stableford competitions are held throughout the year as well as numerous less formal “fun” competitions. The winter Stablefords contribute to a These Sunday fixtures are normally league and an eclectic, and in the summer preceded by breakfast and followed by a friendly chat and sandwich lunch. The team there is an additional midweek 9-hole winning the league hosts a gala day in May Stableford league. to which all league members are invited.

The Club Championship at the end of July, played over 36 holes over two days, is the competition that everyone wants to win, but there are many other events besides, some featuring novel formats such as the Triangle Cup which features teams of three: one male member, one female member and one veteran. The men also play a match against the veterans and their presentation evening, held jointly with the ladies, takes place in December. Most importantly of all, if you are considering joining Lindfield, something

we are most proud of is that there are no cliques. If you turn up as a new member you will be welcomed with open arms and made to feel as though you belong from day one.

Ladies The ladies meet every Tuesday morning for golf, after which we sit and chat over a cup of coffee and something to eat.

Not that these league matches are anything other than an enjoyable experience, but for those of a slightly less competitive nature there are eight friendly matches and four mixed friendly games a year. The venue for our friendly matches alternates, one year home, the following year away. It affords the opportunity to see and play on some of the other lovely courses in Sussex and

Members’ Golf rekindle friendships which can stretch back many years. Monthly medals are played from March to November (first Tuesday of the month), as well as Stableford competitions throughout the year. Tuesday is Ladies Day and on the weeks where there is neither medal nor Stableford, we choose some other format so the game is always interesting. We also have various special events throughout the year starting in February when we have a Valentine’s Cup with the Vets, followed by various cups and trophy events, including the Married Couples

Cup, Grandparents Cup, Rosebowl, Past Captains Day, Methuselah Trophy and Founders Cup and league competitions. A friendly get-together and an enjoyable lunch follows many of these events. The Club Championship is played over 36 holes in August over two days. There is also a Ladies Invitation Day in July when members can invite a player from another club. We have a very happy Ladies section and enjoy our social life - in fact, so much that we go on holiday together for four days in August each year.

Veterans Membership of the Veterans section is open to members of Lindfield Golf Club aged 55 and over. A small subscription of just £10 a year is payable and opens up a gateway to much more competitive golf. Not that competition is the Veterans’ raison d’être. More than anything this is a small, friendly, happy group who play golf for the enjoyment and the camaraderie that it brings. The veterans boast quite a range of abilities, all are keen to represent the club in friendly matches and all are given the opportunity to do so.

Friendly matches are played home and away with other local clubs, primarily from Easter to early October and many of which are longstanding fixtures. The matches live up to their name of friendly – there is lots of banter and these encounters are as much a social occasion as they are about enjoying the game of golf. Matches tend to be between eight pairs a side, playing fourball betterball. Players like to arrive early, have a cup of coffee and meet the opposition before playing their match. Afterwards there is the chance to have relaxing drink followed by two-course meal and coffee. Slightly more serious, but no less

enjoyable, is the chance to represent the club in the big Sussex events, the Cyril Blake Cup and the Gilbert Print Plate. Within the club, the Veterans’ regular competition day of the week is Thursday, with a medal held the first week of the month, a Stableford on the middle Thursday of the month and the other dates being filled with a mix of more fun and varied events. The vets enjoy a host of competitions throughout the year, the most prestigious of which is the vets Club Championship, which is played over 36 holes on a Monday and a Thursday of the same

week, generally in late July or early August. A singles knockout competition runs through the summer months, as does a singles league, where members play round-robin matches with all the group winners progressing to the final phase of the competition to decide the champion. The veterans hold their own AGM and presentation of prizes in late November. Keen to make use of the course at every opportunity, many of the seniors enjoy a roll-up on a Monday morning, the perfect start to the week.

Juniors Lindfield Golf Club is committed to encouraging young people to participate and enjoy the game of golf. Our objective is to give members of the Lindfield Junior Section the opportunity to learn, develop and play their golf in a suitably supervised secure environment whilst enjoying the experience of participating in the sport.

In order to achieve this we have a number of planned initiatives: • We offer free membership of the Junior Section of Lindfield Golf Club. • We arrange a schedule of Coaching to be led by PGA Professionals. • We have scheduled a program of “playing opportunities” which will give participants the chance to actually get out onto the course to practice and to play in competitions.

In addition to theses planned initiatives Junior Members of Lindfield Golf Club have normal members’ privileges in terms of the club facilities, golf course and practice facilities. Juniors with official CONGU handicaps are also welcome to play in Main Club Competitions. We encourage Junior Members to spend as much time as they wish at the Golf Club. In addition to our Junior Section activities we conduct golf programs with local schools providing their students with an introduction to the sport, experience of playing golf and encouragement to participate more fully.

only ten minutes away from Haywards Heath with its good road and excellent rail links. Meetings can be held inside the clubhouse, there is also the option at certain times of the year when the Golf College students are not on campus to make use of their classroom, which can accommodate up to 20 delegates comfortably and has a projector and screen.

Why not make a full day of it at Lindfield? We can offer you excellent rates if you are considering a corporate golf outing or we can cater for a lunchtime or evening meal after a business meeting to give you an opportunity to unwind and discuss the key points to come out of the day.

Social Activities Members at Lindfield Golf Club enjoy a variety of social activities throughout the year in the excellent clubhouse. Many of these make use of the chance to partake of the excellent fare on offer from our outstanding caterers. There are sit-down meals to celebrate popular dates in the calendar such as Burns Night, Easter Sunday, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. There is also a Christmas dinner and fun

event early in December where all the main club prizes are handed out. Other events in recent times have included darts marathon evenings in conjunction with Rotary Club, Quiz Nights, Wine Tasting Evenings and a Turkish Night. We are a keen supporter of local organisations and are often used as a venue for meetings of the Rotary Club, Probus Club and Inner Wheel organisations.

The ladies and the veterans sections regularly go away together on a golfing holidays with the destination changing each year, whilst the main club has a reciprocal golf trip arrangement with a club in the Bavarian village of Ruhpolding. If the weather is bad, no problem, the ladies often adjourn to the clubhouse for a sociable game of bridge.

Golf College Questions Answered The Golf College at Lindfield Golf Club has some exciting course opportunities for those seeking to pursue a professional career in the game. To help you make up your mind, here are the answers to some of the most frequently-asked questions by prospective students hoping to enrol on our Advanced Apprenticeship in Golf.

What GCSEs do I need? Ideally, you will need at least four GCSEs to start the course, these must be at C grade or above and include both maths and English. However, you can do the BTEC Course with just two. What handicap do I have to have? We do not have a maximum handicap requirement but you will need to play to a reasonable level and have the drive and ambition to improve. Remember, you will be spending two years working on your game!

Do you have accommodation? For all students who live too far to commute to the college on a daily basis, we provide hosting with local families within a five-mile radius of the college. We collect every morning (except Monday) and drop off every evening back to the host families. Believe it or not, 75 per cent of our current students are hosted and they all enjoy it. More details can be found on the Golf College website: www.thegolfcollege.com
