Welcome Pyecombe Golf Club is situated six miles north of Brighton, set in the heart of the South Downs National Park, laid out on two rolling ridges and in the valley between. These peaceful surroundings offer a challenging course with magnificent panoramic views of the Sussex Weald with its famous windmills Jack and Jill. The idyllic setting is a haven for discerning golfers and nature lovers alike and the club is proud of the many awards it has won for the sympathetic way in which the course is environmentally managed. The course itself is a downland gem, highly regarded across Sussex and far beyond as being a thorough yet fair test to golfers of all abilities. At 6,266 yards off the white tees, it plays to a par of 71 and is open for play all the year round
thanks to its excellent drainage. Pyecombe has a long and illustrious history dating back to its formation in 1894 and was the home club to Henry Longhurst, the famous and well-respected golf commentator. The club affords members numerous opportunities to play competitively against other clubs and in its own prestigious competitions. Off the course there is a vibrant social side with many functions being hosted. Visitors and societies are very welcome to come and sample the outstanding golf on offer and the warmth of the reception means strangers do not stay that way for long. Many turn into old friends, returning time and time again.

Pyecombe Golf Club
History Pyecombe Golf Club was formally opened on Saturday, October 6, 1894 with a match between the professionals of Forest Row and Seaford golf clubs, Messrs. Rowe and Ross respectively, watched by some 50 members and wellwishers of the club. The first course layout used a large amount of the terrain still used today and gave a playing length of 3,789 yards, compared to today’s 6,266 yards. Among the notable features of those early days was a barn in the middle of the 15th fairway, which golfers today will be glad to learn no longer exists. A ladies’ course comprising nine holes, located opposite the club on the other side of the present main road, was opened a month later. Improvements continued apace with a new
clubhouse opening the following January. The first men’s captain was Mr C. W. Campion and he presented a silver challenge cup for an annual competition for the best scratch score. The Campion Cup is still played for to this day. A mainstay of the club between the wars was Wally Wooller, one of the sons of Walter Wooller the Pyecombe shepherd. He acted as club professional, steward and greenkeeper. The fairways were maintained by grazing sheep and the greens cut with a hand mower. In those days there was no bar in the clubhouse and Wally would take the stock home each evening and return it to the club the next morning. The course closed in April 1942 after being requisitioned by the War Department and used as a tank training area and

finally reopened for play some seven years later. In 1982 the golf course was extended by about 500 yards with the opening of three new holes on the north side of the South Downs Way. The former 18th hole that led down to the clubhouse still remains and is often used for practice or tuition purposes. The club bought the land from the National Freight Corporation in 1989 and so became a truly private members’ club. November 1990 saw two days of incessant rain cause a mudslide that wrecked the 10th green. This natural disaster saw a new two-tiered green constructed nearby and the old green turned into a water feature. The club celebrated an eventful first 100 years of existence in
1994. Its second century began just like the first, with major improvement works. A new computer-controlled sprinkler system for watering the greens was installed and later, a major reconstruction of the clubhouse was undertaken which led to greatly enhanced facilities. The Clayton windmills, Jack and Jill, are two nearby landmarks that are closely associated with the club and visible from many parts of the course. The black mill, Jack, worked until 1907. The white mill, Jill, was moved to her present location from Dyke Road in 1852 and is a working mill having been lovingly restored. The late Henry Longhurst, golfer, writer and BBC commentator, who was a member and past President of the club, used to live in the house between the mills.

Pyecombe Golf Club
THE COURSE Pyecombe Golf Club offers an outstanding course loved by its members and marvelled at by visitors who discover it for the first time. The 18 holes stretch to 6,266 yards off the medals tees, playing to a par of 71, but it is not the length of the course that offers the sternest examination, more the way it exercises the mind. Pyecombe is a thinking golfer’s course, favouring course management and the accurate placement of shots over big hitting. Many of the fairways are undulating, requiring precision off the tee and players find all areas of their strokemaking armoury put to the test. Once found, the putting surfaces are true and as good as any on offer elsewhere in the county. The chalky downland terrain
provides good drainage, so the course is rarely closed, even in the wettest of weather. The golf is spectacular, but the scenery is no less breathtaking, set in 240 acres within the boundaries of the South Downs National Park in the middle of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Site of Nature Conservation Importance. Pyecombe takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously and our green-keeping staff manage it in the most ecologically-friendly way possible. The results speak for themselves, with blankets of native bluebells and wild orchids just some of the many flora to be seen. The fauna is just as striking, with secretive badgers, shy deer, stoats and kestrels but a few of the delights.

professional & the pro shop Whether by making adjustments to a current set or building new clubs from high-quality components, the result will leave the player with the added confidence that the next time they take to the course it will be with the correct equipment to suit their game. An in-depth interview is followed by a dynamic test for lie, loft and length. Swing speed, tempo, transition and position of release in the swing will be identified to ascertain the correct shaft. Everything down to the grip is taken into consideration. Trial clubs can be built, allowing interim feedback to be given which can enable further adjustments to be made.

Tuition Pyecombe’s PGA teaching professional Jason Bowen offers a friendly and easy-to-understand approach to golf coaching. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced golfer, expert advice is on hand. Jason specialises in the short game, believing that good wedge play and putting is the secret to improving scores. Beginners are started off on putting, then progress to chipping, pitching and finally the full swing. They learn how to get the ball in the hole first.
Jason combines his knowledge of equipment and the swing to marry the club to the player. He employs the GASP system of golf swing software which offers state-of-the-art video analysis. It incorporates on-screen drawing tools, action replay facilities and multi-screen functions. Your swing can be compared side by side with all the top professionals and even overlaid. An e-mail summary of your lesson is also provided. Seeing really is believing and having a visual record of what you have learnt can enhance the learning experience, improve fault diagnosis and shorten the time required to make improvements.

practice facilities Pyecombe Golf Club is committed to offering its members all the facilities possible to enable them to become as proficient at this great game of golf as their talent and application allows. As well as the highly-regarded tuition on offer from our head professional, Jason Bowen, there are several areas where players can work on ingraining new swing thoughts or turning previously weaker areas of the game into strengths. There are two teaching and practice areas adjacent to the course providing the opportunity to practise the full swing on the natural undulating terrain of the South Downs.
A mature practice hole, including green and bunker – fondly referred to as “the Old 18th” – is fully maintained and used regularly by members and visitors. A very nice nine-hole putting green perfectly situated overlooking the patio mirrors the fine surfaces to be found out on the course. For those where time is at a premium, there are two practice nets yards from the 1st tee, affording the opportunity to get loose before beginning a round.

visitors and societies Pyecombe is pleased to welcome society golfers on any weekday, playing 18, 27 or 36 holes. We are a popular venue and many people return to sample the delights of our club year after year knowing they will experience a challenging but enjoyable round of golf followed by renowned Sussex hospitality in our well-appointed clubhouse. The course is in exceptional condition all year round, while it impossible to tire of the spectacular settings no matter what shape one’s golf game is in. The patio looking up the first fairway captures the most the sun can offer while on colder days a traditional clubhouse with roaring log fire awaits. Pyecombe Golf Club, working with you, will endeavour to make your visit to us as enjoyable as possible and we are always
looking for ways to enhance what we hope will be a golfing experience that is fondly remembered. The golf course, the stunning location, the mouth-watering selection of food options available – from breakfasts to filling snacks to three-course meals – and the warmth of the welcome generally make for a combination that wins over the most demanding of judges. However, at Pyecombe we are always looking for ways to go the extra mile. One particularly notable innovation has been our professional, Jason Bowen, treating societies to a 30-minute golf clinic absolutely free of charge, allowing our visitors to put into practice their newly-learned skills whilst enjoying the spectacular views of our course.

visitors and societies Alternatively, Jason is able to produce video footage of players teeing off the 1st tee to be replayed in the clubhouse after the round. We encourage society visitors to play in groups of two or three although we recognise that for special occasions such as charity events or team competitions that might be impractical. The earliest time societies may reserve the tee is from 9.15am, the same time that applies for casual green fees Monday to Friday. Visitors are also welcome after 1pm on Sundays throughout the year and after 1pm on Saturdays from November to March and after midday from April to October. Dress is of a standard nature applying both on and off the course (i.e. no denim, collarless T-shirts, jeans or trainers).
continued
Tailored shorts and sports socks are permitted both on the course and in the clubhouse during the summer months. A change of attire is requested, please, for the evening. The use of mobile phones is only allowed in an emergency whilst on the course. Society organisers and winners of society days are invited back as our guests for a special golf day which is generally held towards the end of September. For more details, call the professional on 01273 845372 or e-mail jason at professional@pyecombegolfclub.com. A booking form is available on the website.

clubhouse The clubhouse is the perfect place to relax and unwind before and after your round. Well appointed, with a nice cosy feel, the lounge bar boasts a varied selection of beers, including some well-kept ales, together with wines and spirits as well as a wide choice of non-alcoholic drinks. If you just want a light bite while you catch up on all the club news, then a host of options such as tea and crumpets are on offer. The food choice, however, is extensive, filling and, above all, tasty and is not one to be missed by the hungry golfer. Why not try one of our ‘specials’ from the blackboard or choose from a wide selection of delicious snacks and meals
from the menu all freshly prepared for you by our experienced catering staff. Sandwiches and baguettes, Longhurst paninis (named after Pyecombe’s favourite son) and oven bottom muffins all feature on the menu which covers the whole spectrum from light salads to the famous ‘full round’ breakfasts aimed at people looking to replenish the calories burned off on the course. The kitchen is open from 8am-6pm on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months (April-October) and from 10am-5pm on the remaining days. From November to March food is available from 8am-5pm on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and from 11am-4pm on other days.

club competitions Pyecombe prides itself on being a very friendly and hospitable club and gives members a host of opportunities to play competitive golf regardless of age or ability. Men A wide range of competitions take place at the club throughout the year - monthly, weekend and weekday medals, stablefords, trophy competitions and knockout competitions. Partners can be arranged if required. On a Saturday morning especially for new members there is generally a ‘roll up’ meeting in the clubhouse at 8.30am, partners are drawn, teeing off at 9am. This is a great way to meet other new and established members of the club.
There are also several roll up groups that meet through the week at different times - please ask a member of our team if you wish any further information. The Men’s Section has a good record in the Sussex Scratch Knockout competition (P@V I.T. Trophy) which is drawn and run by the Sussex Golf Union and held every year as a 36-hole match play competition consisting of eight players playing foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon - the winning team going through to the next round with the final being held at the end of the summer.

club competitions To encourage the low handicappers and for them to gain vital experience another scratch match play competition, the Pyecombe Pitcher, takes place through the summer months against certain other Sussex clubs and concludes again with a final at the end of the season. Pyecombe play in the Mid Sussex League (MSL), a competition which also features Haywards Heath, Copthorne, Ifield and Worthing. Matches are great fun and open to all members who have an official handicap. The clubs play against each other twice a year (summer and winter league) with matches being played home and away on the same day followed by a good lunch!
continued
As well as these matches the League also holds summer and winter finals days (individual and team event) and the Friendship Bowl (invitation to the Ladies) which are open to all who have played in any of the matches throughout the year. Each club takes it in turns to host these events. Pyecombe also has an agreement with these clubs to enable members to play on their courses at a reduced green fee or even free in some cases! In addition to the above there are also several inter-club matches which again are open to all members with an official handicap.

Social Pyecombe rightly prides itself as being a club run for the benefit of its members and there is a spirit of togetherness that can be felt in the clubhouse just as much as out on the course. While there is nothing the membership enjoy more than spending several hours pitting their wits against the golfing test laid before them, they also are not averse to enjoying themselves off the course as well. One of the undoubted highlights of the year is the Pyecombe Ball, affording members the opportunity of donning gown (the ladies) or dinner jacket and bow tie and enjoying a night out at a venue in Mid Sussex. Major social events are held throughout the year. These range
from a Scottish Evening in January to commemorate the life of Robert Burns through to traditional parties at the end of the year to celebrate both Christmas and the New Year. Valentines Day and Mothering Sunday gives the perfect excuse to partake of the club’s wonderful catering with lunches organised for both and evening events have included quiz nights and race nights, with karaoke also making a welcome return. Major sporting events are also embraced as a means of getting together. 2011, for example, saw us host a Tapas Evening to coincide with the Champions League final between Barcelona and Manchester United while the membership also enjoyed a group outing to the Open Championship at Sandwich.
