Welcome Renishaw Park Golf Club warmly welcomes both members and non-members. You can always be assured of an enjoyable round of golf and the very best hospitality in the clubhouse where a genuine and friendly atmosphere awaits. Situated in the magnificent grounds of Renishaw Hall on the outskirts of Sheffield, our attractive par 71, 18-hole course measuring 6,132 yards dates back to 1911. It is a challenging but fair test, examining all areas of the golf game and is renowned throughout the region and beyond for the quality of its magnificent greens. Our commitment to quality and providing value for money make us a popular destination for visiting golfers and societies, many of whom come back year after year. We offer competitive golf to players of all abilities and every golfer, whatever their standard, should find something to appeal at Renishaw Park. There is the opportunity to play alongside one’s peers both within club competitions and against neighbouring clubs in league matches and friendly fixtures. We are also a recommended venue for weddings, birthday parties, anniversaries and for corporate gatherings. Whatever the occasion our friendly staff will make sure your visit is a wonderful experience. The club celebrated its centenary in 2011, over the next hundred years we will strive to ensure that a visit to Renishaw Park continues to offer a memorable and rewarding experience for golfers and visitors. 5
Early History Renishaw Park Golf Club was the brainchild of Sir George R Sitwell and in 1911 he constructed an 18-hole golf course spanning the Sheffield to Barlborough Road. The front nine holes were set in the parkland adjoining Renishaw Hall with the back nine holes across the road alongside the River Rother. The course has remained largely unaltered save for backward movement of tees to give additional length. In addition to the construction of the course Sir George converted an old hostelry (parts of which date back to James I) into a clubhouse for the use of members. The old buildings were extended in 1913 by the addition of a new wing designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The course and clubhouse remained as a private company under the control of the Sitwell family until 1952, at which time the company was dissolved and administration of the clubhouse and course transferred to a private members’ club. This situation remains today.
7
The Course A round of golf at Renishaw Park is definitely a game of two halves. From the clubhouse there is a short walk across a footbridge over the railway and the A6135 to the 1st tee of the par-71, 6,132-yard parkland course set adjacent to Renishaw Hall, which is the backdrop for the front nine holes. Crossing back over the road there is the back nine holes, set between the A6135 and the river Rother. The first nine, with its six par 4s and three par 3s, is rolling parkland where use of the driver requires good accuracy. Second shots to most par 4s need to be carefully placed especially on the 3rd and 6th where pin positions can be very tricky. The second nine is flat and more open with four par 5s, two par 3s and three par 4s. Use of the driver is a must on the longer holes but beware the rough if you stray too far out of line!
8
Whilst the whole course is always well presented the greens at Renishaw are undoubtedly its pride and joy. Fast and true, they are widely recognised as some of the best in the county with many a professional player failing to cope with their intricacies during championship events. An independent assessment by the Sports Turf Research Institute prompted chief agronomist Henry Bechelet to say: “The surfaces on the day of inspection were the smoothest I have ever seen (barring the 2010 Open). I was truly awestruck. “The speed of these greens would test the very best players in the world and they are the type of speeds the European tour would aim to achieve during their professional tournaments.” The job done by the club’s excellent greenkeeping team is appreciated by both members and visitors.
9
Course Tour If you have never played Renishaw Park before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our course tour courtesy of Nigel Parkinson, our PGA Professional. Hole 1, 297 yards, par 4 A short par 4 with a wicked left-to-right slope on the fairway. Aim to the left side but too far will ensure a blocked approach to the green. An approach short too far right will see the ball fall away, leaving a tricky chip. Hole 2, 177 yards, par 3 A large green sloping from front to back needs a well-struck iron from the tee. Hit the left side of the green and see the ball fall towards the hole for a birdie chance. Hole 3, 440 yards, par 4 A memorable hole with the tee only a short iron away from Renishaw Hall. Position on the fairway is paramount as a wayward drive will see the approach blocked by a number of magnificent mature trees. A par on this hole will be a good result. Interestingly the first three holes have no bunkers as Sir George Sitwell decreed that no sand should be visible from the hall in what he considered his “garden.
11
The Course Continued...
Hole 4, 363 yards, par 4 The tee shot will need to negotiate two bunkers on the right-hand side of the fairway whilst being long enough to leave a short iron to a raised green. Make sure you have enough club as anything short will roll back. Pin placement can make putting very tricky. Hole 5, 148 yards, par 3 A short par 3 to a small green guarded by bunkers on both sides. Hit the green and a birdie awaits, miss and the fun begins. Hole 6, 433 yards, par 4 Seemingly a straightforward par 4 with a generous fairway and no bunkers protecting the green. However the slopes and speed of the green makes this a deserving SI 1. Anything on the green above the hole will require a silky smooth putting touch to see you register a hard-earned par. Hole 7, 390 yards, par 4 Position is again vital from the tee as a blind tee shot awaits to a generous green. Depending on the pin position a straightforward birdie putt or difficult two-putt could be the result of a well-hit approach.
12
Hole 8, 140 yards, par 3 The easiest par 3 on the course although there is still potential for danger. Miss the bunkers guarding the entrance to the green to give yourself a birdie chance. Hole 9, 324 yards, par 4 Stand on the tee and you will see why such a short hole is deserving of such a low stroke index of 5. Hitting the narrow strip of fairway is a must to allow a tough approach up the tunnel of trees. Take one more club than you think to a long and narrow green. Definitely a hole to remember. Hole 10, 514 yards, par 5 The first of four par 5s on the much flatter back nine. The longer hitters will fancy their chances of reaching in two but beware the two mounds at driving distance. Trees the length of the right-hand side could cause problems but straight hitting will find its reward. Hole 11, 516 yards, par 5 A tough par 5 particularly from the white tees demands a strategic approach. A well hit drive will bring a large mound in to play for your second shot. If you choose to carry and fall short, shots can easily be dropped.
13
Course Tour Continued...
Hole 12, 335 yards, par 4 A delightful short par 4 with a sharp left-hand dog leg. Seemingly straightforward with an iron to the corner and then to the green although the bravest may decide to cut the corner over the trees. Do so at your own risk. Hole 13, 198 yards, par 3 One word describes this hole – tough. There is out of bounds the length of the left-hand side and a narrow approach to a green guarded by bunkers. Only well-hit shots will escape with a par here. Hole 14, 334 yards, par 4 A good straight shot will leave a short approach to a large green. Take care over your putts though as this is reputed to be the most difficult green to read on the course. Hole 15, 494 yards, par 5 Possibly the easiest of the par 5s and a good birdie chance. Long drivers will carry the road and look to reach in two but even shorter hitters will only require a short approach to set up their birdie attempt.
15
Course Tour Continued...
Hole 16, 528 yards, par 5 The last of the par 5s has trouble along its whole length. Bunkers are to be avoided on the right-hand side at driving distance whilst two mature trees will catch any wayward second shot. One of the larger greens on the course can make three-putting a real possibility. Hole 17, 123 yards, par 3 A real interesting hole for one so short. The raised, wellguarded green sits on the other side of a number of mature oak trees. With only a narrow gap between them you need to get your ball in the air quickly. Hole 18, 378 yards, par 4 A good par 4 to finish with. Any ball catching the ridge across the fairway will end up in the fairway bunker, so hit long. A good approach at the flag will hopefully give you a nice birdie putt to finish your round.

The Clubhouse The clubhouse at Renishaw offers a warm welcome to visitors and members alike boasting a special character absent in many newly-built premises. The clubhouse is unique, consisting of two parts, one which dates back to James I and was a former hostelry. On the first floor there are frescoes of Abraham and Isaac, and of St George and the Dragon. This house is mentioned in 1720 in one of the old letters at Renishaw as ‘Dixon’s at the Lane End’ and after about 1680, when the custom of entertaining tenants in the Hall had gone out of fashion, it was employed for this purpose. In 1912 Sir George commissioned his friend, Sir Edwin Lutyens, to design an extension to the clubhouse. This fine crescent-shaped façade faces away from the road so is only seen by relatively few people. It contains a dining room in the Swiss style, with seating for up to 100 persons, a locker room, drying room, ladies’ room and steward’s quarters. Hence the dining room being known as the Lutyens Room. Incidentally, Sir Edwin Lutyens also designed the Greywalls Hotel overlooking Muirfield Golf Course in Scotland.

www.holywellhealth.co.uk Independent clinic based in Chesterfield offering multidisciplinary approach to treating injuries. We aim to address both your symptoms but also to try and understand the cause of your problems. We use various techniques to do this. Main issue is to address how you function so as to reduce the damaging forces on your body that are causing the injury to occur. We use podiatry to assess how you walk / run.
Podiatry Assessment
• High speed video analysis • A greater understanding of how your feet work and how this impacts on the rest of your body • A greater understanding of your footwear choices and how certain features in footwear affect your function • We use various ways of treating you; orthoses, walking gait advice and retraining, foot mobilisations and manipulations to clear ‘stuck’ joints, footwear advice, basic foot and leg exercises for you to do, or referral on to other therapies that will be effective at treating your problems • We use an in shoe pressure analysis system to check our orthoses are working for you. This is a very thin insole that fits in your shoes and then you walk or run and we can see how your load your foot, how you move over your foot, as well as imbalances between left and right legs. We can do this following fitting of the orthoses to check that we have changed your function in a correct way. This can be used for walking but also during your golf swing action.
Physiotherapy
• • • •
Our physios work with all types of injuries Will treat initial symptoms & give advice on how you need to manage these in the short term Will provide advice and exercise information to try and prevent the problem returning Will work with our podiatrists to try and ensure that the functional aspects of your problems are changed. (This approach will often entail addressing areas that are not near (but related) to your injury symptoms).
Sport massage therapy
• This can either be a short term treatment to reduce muscle tightness from over exertion or a longer term treatment to help with functional changes • Can be useful as a maintenance treatment to keep muscles relaxed and also to identify any problems before they become an injury • Is very useful when we are addressing functional issues where the body has to change what is has been used to doing Our podiatry and physiotherapy treatments are covered by most insurance companies and we are able to offer gait analysis for BUPA members.

Memberships When you join Renishaw Park Golf Club you will become part of the club and benefit from all the club activities, enjoy our social events and meet new golfing friends. Memberships are available for men, ladies, juniors and corporate business. You can either be sponsored by an existing member, or make a personal application. The joining process is painless, quick and easy and normally involves an interview with a representative of the club before the issuing of a nomination form. There are a range of memberships available to suit the type of golf you want to play. Full membership will allow you to play at any time in all competitions. Alternatively a five day membership may suit better, allowing you to play in all midweek competitions. Some may opt simply for social membership to take advantage of the club facilities without wishing to play golf. Junior memberships are encouraged with many of our past juniors going on to play at a high standard including in European tour events. To discuss all options please call Director of Club Operations Andy Flowers on 01246 432044.

Playing Categories Members at Renishaw Park enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year. There are fixtures against other clubs, together with much competition to be enjoyed alongside fellow members, some for silverware and some of a more social nature. Men The men are members of the Sheffield Union League of Golf Clubs and play in Division One, which they won in 2011. Matches are singles, played off scratch, featuring four players per team. With eight teams in the league it means 14 fixtures home and away, normally played on a Wednesday, running from May until the middle of August. The mid to high handicap golfers are not overlooked when it comes to being offered the chance to represent Renishaw Park against other clubs and experience some of the other excellent courses the region has to offer. We enjoy several club matches throughout the season which are available to anyone who wants to play. These fixtures are renowned for their friendliness and are more about enjoying the game of golf than winning or losing. Matches are generally followed by a convivial meal. Representatives from the club also enter the main competitions run by the Sheffield Union.

Within the club itself, there are around a dozen honours board competitions. Among the most prestigious are our four “majors”: Captain’s Day, the Albert Lee Cup and the Curchod Cup, which are medal events and President’s Day, which is a Stableford competition. These are all longstanding club competitions. The club annually chooses a Golfer of the Year, which is decided upon by the committee. It may be the most successful player, or the one who has shown most improvement. Ladies The Ladies are a very friendly and welcoming section who also enjoy league and friendly competition. Renishaw Park fields an A and a B team in the Yorkshire Ladies County Golf Association Inter-Club Team Championships. These feature home and away matches against three other clubs, with the best performing clubs in the region advancing to the semi-finals and final at the end of the season. For teams of seven players, A team fixtures are aimed at players with handicaps of 25 or less and B team matches for those with handicaps of 19 to 30.

In addition, the ladies play friendly matches and are also encouraged to enter competitions organised by the Sheffield and District Ladies’ Golf Association. There are monthly medals and Stablefords within the club as well as other trophies to be played for through the course of the season. Seniors The Seniors enjoy their golf as much as any other section in the club and take the chance to play at every available opportunity, enjoying informal gatherings, or “roll-ups” every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They enjoy friendly matches all through the season from April, playing different clubs across the district in matches of fourball betterball. While the majority of the club’s own senior competitions are open to players aged 50 and over, it is 60 and over for inter-club friendly matches as the starting age for senior golfers is older at certain other clubs. There are six medals specifically for seniors through the summer, played off the more forgiving yellow tees, not the whites. Two keenly-contested trophies are held for seniors in Captain’s Week: the Beynon Salver, for over-50s and the Alan Hall Plate for over-70s.

Juniors Renishaw Park has its own junior section featuring players of all ages, abilities and levels of experience and backed by the support of its own dedicated junior organiser. We have offered some very attractive membership packages which have seen a major influx of youngsters into the club. It is the hope to develop these children as golfers, teaching them the game, fuelling their enthusiasm for the sport and hopefully turning them into the Renishaw Park full playing members of the future. The juniors get group coaching sessions each week from the dedicated and hard-working professional team at Renishaw Park. These sessions take place on Saturday mornings and in the evenings during the lighter summer months. Here they learn the basics, along with rules and etiquette. For the youngest (we have players as young as eight years old) who are not physically able to cope with the demands of playing the proper course, we have attempted to create a five or six-hole course on the practice ground to give them some playing experience. Many competitions are organised throughout the year, with the trophies handed out at the presentation evening held in November. The club gets some backing from the Golf Foundation to help its juniors and members of the senior section each pay a small levy on their subs which also goes towards developing our youngsters. 37

The Sitwells The world famous Sitwell family are intrinsically linked with Renishaw Park Golf Club. The front nine holes of the course are ‘In the Park’ of Renishaw Hall which serves as the family home of Lady Penelope Sitwell and is open to the public on well advertised dates during the year. It is well worth a visit to the house and grounds. The 1980 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice used footage shot at Renishaw Hall. D. H. Lawrence is said to have used the local village of Eckington and Renishaw Hall as inspiration for his novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Sir George Sitwell was course founder and made two provisos; that there be no unsightly bunkers in the Park and secondly that there be an Artisans section with specially reduced rates so that the many work people on his estate, not to mention those who toiled in neighbouring Pits and in the Iron Foundry, could enjoy the game and the surroundings as much as the more well-to-do who formed the nucleus of the Club when it started. Sir Reresby Sitwell became president in 1984 until 1991 when the role was made honorary and was a position he served until his death in 2009. Lady Penelope agreed to carry on the role and performed the unveiling of a special plinth to mark the club’s centenary in 2011.

Open Competitions Renishaw Park Golf Club is always delighted to showcase its outstanding course and offers golfers of all abilities the opportunity to play here in a series of Open competitions which are held throughout the year. The formats of the competitions can vary slightly from year to year, but generally we like to host at least five events. The season starts with a Men’s Open in May, which tends to be a pairs betterball competition. The Ladies’ Open AmAm, held around early July, features four per team playing a Stableford format, while at the end of the month there is a Seniors Open Am-Am event for over-50s for teams of four, with the best two Stableford scores on each hole to count. The Seniors are at it again in early September, with another Senior Open, while the season concludes with a Mixed Open later in the month featuring teams of four with the best ladies’ score and the best men’s score to count on each hole. All these events conclude with a prize-giving at the end of the day and details of dates, how to enter and entry forms are available on the club’s website, www. renishawparkgolf.co.uk

Social Activities With its friendly membership and historic and welcoming clubhouse, it will come as no surprise that Renishaw Park members have equally as enjoyable a time off the course as they do on it. An extensive and varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in entertainment. These social occasions range from a celebration of Burn’s Night in January, which involves a sit-down meal and much merriment, to race nights, children’s parties and much more besides. The catering at Renishaw Park is exceptionally good and if there is an opportunity to celebrate an event alongside sampling the excellent fare produced by our chef, then we jump at the chance. We always have a fireworks party to celebrate Bonfire Night and Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without members gathering for the traditional singing of carols.. Members also welcome in the New Year with their friends at Renishaw Park, with a disco being held in the clubhouse.

How To Find Us Seven miles south-east of Sheffield, the Club is located approximately two miles from M1 junction 30 on the A6135 towards Sheffield. If you are coming from Sheffield, choose the B6388 and A6135, the A57, or the A6102 and A6135. All of these routes take around 25 minutes. For satellite navigation purposes, our postcode is S21 3UZ. Public transport The nearest station is at Woodhouse, which is around five and a half miles, or a 15-minute taxi-ride away. It is advised, however, to alight at Sheffield, which though eight miles away is far better served and being the busiest railway station in South Yorkshire offers services to all parts of the country.
