Welcome The Royal Cinque Ports Yacht Club extends a warm and friendly welcome to our members, their guests and visiting yachtsmen. The RCPYC is one of the oldest yacht clubs in England, and is active in all sailing activities. We enjoy a premier position overlooking Dover Harbour, the world’s busiest passenger ferry port, with clear views across the English Channel to the coast of France, and the splendid backdrop of the famous White Cliffs dominated by Dover Castle. The harbour itself is used as a training area by would-be cross channel swimmers. The Club is a stone’s throw from the 400 berth Dover Marina, with all facilities, including boat lift and service centre.

Introduction The RCPYC is the closest sailing club to Continental Europe. Within easy sailing distance of the French marinas of Boulogne, Calais, Gravelines and Dunkerque, the Belgian and Dutch coasts as well as Normandy can be reached in a single sail given favourable conditions. It is the ideal starting point for cruises to northern Europe or as a stopover between Europe and the South of England. Our Club makes the best possible use of these advantages.

marine surveying and consultancy years. The company has a wide experience in providing support and expert advice in all aspects of marine operations, including technical, safety and environmental issues. Although this service has been mainly focused on the commercial part of the industry, the demand on private owners and yacht brokers to comply with the increasing amount of regulations, safety codes and insurance requirements has prompted the company to develop a similar high quality service for all.
We can offer the additional service of a Boat Safety Inspection to the standard required for the Small Boat Safety Scheme which is required for those wishing to gain a navigational certificate for inland waterways. This can be carried out for all boats as its emphasis is on a high standard of safety, something that all responsible boat owners would want for their own piece of mind.

Club History Dover is one of the Cinque Ports, which were established by Royal Charter in 1511 to provide ships and men for the defence of the country, in consideration of which they were granted certain privileges particularly in regard to taxation. The club, the fifth oldest Royal yacht club in England, was founded in 1872 by the Duke of Connaught, son of Queen Victoria. The Duke, who had been Commodore from 1872, was largely responsible for obtaining the Admiralty Warrant from Queen Victoria, so that members of the Club who comply with special conditions can apply for the privilege of wearing the undefaced Blue Ensign, a right afforded to few British clubs. The Club moved to its present location on the Dover Harbour waterfront following the destruction of the original premises by enemy gunfire in 1940. The Club’s President is the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, a post held by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother until her death in 2002. Former holders include the Duke of Wellington, Robert Menzies, Prime Minister of Australia, and Sir Winston Churchill. The present Lord Warden, Admiral the Lord Boyce, GCB, OBE, was installed in 2005, and was formally welcomed that year as the new President of RCPYC. The Lord Boyce was a submariner with a distinguished naval career, becoming First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, and finally Chief of the Defence Staff and Aide-de-Camp to HM the Queen. He takes an active interest in the activities of the RCPYC, and has presided over a number of our official functions.

Dover Harbour and Marina The Harbour and Marina are owned by the Dover Harbour Board. The marina was extended in 1999, and is the fastest growing, most commodious and currently the cheapest in SE England. Dover has an Outer Harbour containing the ferry and deep water commercial berths, and an Inner Harbour, entered between the Prince of Wales and Admiralty piers, where the Seacat port and Marinas are located. An approach channel between the north and south piers has an average dredged depth of 5m, gradually reducing as it enters the Tidal Harbour (Tidal Basin), which is accessible at all states of the tide. Anchoring is permitted in designated areas in the Outer Harbour. Pontoon berths are available in the Wellington Dock (157 berths), the Tidal Basin (107), and the Granville Dock (133). Entry to Granville (HW±1.5h) and Wellington Docks (HW 3.5/+4.5) are controlled by tidal gates and the latter also by a swing bridge. Awarded five Gold Anchors by The Yacht Harbour Association, all three berthing area are key-coded for security. Don’t forget that Dover Marina is a member of TransEurope Marinas, a partnership of marinas offering their resident berth-holders a discount on mooring fees, when they visit other members’marinas. All the usual marina facilities are available, including showers, toilets, laundry, and pump-out facilities; water and electricity is supplied to all berths as part of the mooring fees. A hoist with a lifting capacity of 50 tonnes is situated in Granville Dock. The hoist is equipped with a jib crane to remove masts, engines and other equipment weighing up to 1 tonne. Other specialist services are available through the Boatyard Office. There is a well-stocked chandler across the road from the Wellington Dock. Major re-development plans for the Port of Dover are in an advanced stage and will include a completely new marina, sited inside the present Outer Harbour – within sight of the RCPYC clubhouse! 13

Navigational information Dover has an Outer Harbour containing ferry and deep-water commercial berths and an Inner Harbour, where the Marina and former Hoverport are located. The entrance is straightforward, but all small craft are asked to call Dover Port Control (VHF 74) when two miles off to receive instructions for entering the Port, and permission to enter will usually be granted when your craft is 200m from either the Western or Eastern entrance. The tide can run fast across the entrances, so be sure to allow for this, and keep a careful watch for commercial vessels at all times in this busy port! Once inside the Outer Harbour, you should proceed towards and into the Inner Harbour located between the Admiralty and Prince of Wales piers. As you enter the Tidal Harbour, switch to VHF Channel 80 to communicate with Dover Marina staff, who will arrange a berth allocation. There is a Marina Reception pontoon on the Crosswall Quay in the Tidal Basin, directly below the office, where marina staff are present 24hrs to assist you.

What to see and do in Dover The world-famous, majestic white cliffs of Dover, which for centuries have played a key role in our history as Britain’s‘front line’, provide a welcoming sight for many millions of people. The cliffs offer the opportunity for wonderful walks and superb views or you may simply choose to simply gaze at them from the harbour. Sitting proudly atop theWhite Cliffs and overlooking the busy ferry port, Dover Castle has a long and eventful history. The site has been of vital importance since the Iron Age with the first castle at Dover most likely an Anglo-Saxon fortress until the arrival of William the Conqueror when its existing fortifications were improved. The castle, an English Heritage site, is a popular destination for visitors of all ages. It offers not only the ancient keep, but also tours of the underground passages from which Churchill’s wartime operations in the Channel were controlled. A must-see for sailors is the Bronze Age Boat, housed in Dover Museum. It was unearthed during building works in 1992, and is the world’s oldest sea-going vessel. The display was awarded the British Archaeological Awards ICI Award 2000, for its contribution to archaeological knowledge. Dover has an extensive shopping centre with bars and restaurants. Closer to the RCPYC, and backing on to Wellington Dock, de Bradelei Wharf houses a number of factory outlet shops, while Cullin’s Yard is a popular and lively restaurant.

Facilities The clubhouse itself commands a fine view of the busy harbour, ferry port and cruise terminal, and all visiting yacht owners and their friends are welcome as honorary members, and are invited to avail themselves of the amenities of the Club during their stay in Dover. The Club has two bars: the main Prince of Wales Bar, and the Lord Warden Bar, which is mostly used during our larger functions. The bar is comfortably appointed and staffed during lunch time and evening opening, with a good range of beers and wines. Several of our members belong to CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale), and they always ensure that there is a variety of real ales available! The bar hours vary at different times of the year, but most of the time we are open from 1200 to 1500 and from 1800 to 2300 (except on Sunday evenings in the winter). Our permanent Bar Stewards provide a welcoming atmosphere, and also cater for food requirements including freshly made sandwiches, pies and other simple fare from our own galley. They also cater for our larger Club functions, and the regular programme includes both formal and informal dinners, buffets and parties. In the summer months, barbecues are held on the sunny, sheltered terrace outside the Prince of Wales Bar. Other facilities include a separate Lecture and Meetings Room seating up to 70, which is used for formal Club meetings and is also used frequently by outside groups. The Reading Room offers Internet access with WiFi to members and visitors, and a flat screen TV for those important sporting events and videos. There is even gym equipment available for your pre-season tuneup! Weather permitting, the outside deck provides a delightful spot for a lunchtime drink or a sundowner, watching the ferries come and go, or the dinghy racing in the harbour. Our facilities are available for use by other organizations and clubs, and we have some regular users who appreciate the comfortable surroundings and friendly service from our House Staff. The Nautical Institute hold their monthly lectures here, and RCPYC members are frequent and welcome attendees at these interesting and varied meetings.

You can also enjoy Sky Sports, traditional pub games, regular poker nights and live music the last Saturday of every month. A warm welcome awaits you...
Membership Current membership is over 300, most of whom are active sailing or social members. While many of our members live within easy reach of Dover, we have several who travel regularly from farther afield for our activities, and some whose boats are berthed permanently abroad. Membership is open to anyone who has an interest in sailing or power boating. You do not have to be a boat owner to join the Club and social members are welcome. We have both sail and powerboat owners, and quite a few who do not own a craft, but sail as crew with other members, or just join in our active social programmes. Our membership encompasses all ages (our latest addition is the Vice Commodore’s grandson, aged 6 months!) and all backgrounds. Individual, Joint and Family Memberships are available, and our rates remain highly competitive compared to other Clubs in the South of England. While we are proud of our history and tradition, we maintain a friendly and welcoming club, without the ‘starchy’ atmosphere which sailing clubs can all too readily acquire! Anyone interested in becoming a member is welcome to drop in at any time to look around and have a chat. A member will sign you in and possibly even buy you a drink at the bar!

Sailing This is of course the main activity and the raison d’être of a Yacht Club, and we try to ensure that our activities can satisfy the needs and aspirations of all members, old and young, experienced and novice. By no means all of our members are active sailors, some by reason of advancing years, and some by choice, but new members and visitors will always find someone in the Club who will give them help and advice, or perhaps just regale them with salty dog tales from a bar stool! Those members who keep their boats locally are often willing to take extra crew aboard and show them the ropes. Our fleet includes both sail and power vessels. They encompass every style and size of craft from the 24ft day cruiser to boats with transatlantic and even roundthe-world miles under their keels. Something for everyone, in both the racing and cruising calendar.

Racing Although in recent years the emphasis in the Club has been on cruising rather than racing, we have an active and growing group who are keen to participate in the racing programme. Our racing grounds extend both ways along the Kent coast, and out into mid-Channel, giving plenty of scope for varied courses and conditions of wind and tide. We have race series in Spring, Summer and Autumn, as well as the Early Bird Series for the hardy! All races use the Byron Org handicap system, and while the competition for our extensive collection of silverware is always hot, there is provision for the less experienced sailors, with generous handicap allowances for short-handed crews and those who prefer to compete with ‘white sails only’! Those Club members who have competed further afield have also enjoyed success: Club boats have been well placed during the nationally renowned Ramsgate Week, hosted by our neighbours at the Royal Temple Yacht Club in the last two years. This included a first place overall in the Cruiser with Spinnaker Class, to win the prestigious great silver Hornby Industries Trophy.

Cruising The Rear Commodores for Sail and Power have created a cruising programme with something for everyone. We take full advantage of our unique position as the closest sailing club to France – less than 20nm to Calais - and our regular destinations include Gravelines, Dunkerque, Calais and Boulogne. An element of competition makes these weekend cruises even more attractive to members, with separate prizes for both sail and power vessels for predicting most closely their recorded passage time – no cheating of course! We always include a few longer cruising rallies during the season, including the Netherlands and St Katherine’s Dock in London. All these events provide an ideal opportunity for new members to join in a friendly social sailing programme, and for those with little experience to gain offshore sailing time as crew on members’ boats.

Social Calendar We have a busy programme of social events throughout the year, both formal and informal. Our major fixed formal events include an ever-popular Burns’ NightinJanuary,Valentine’sSupper,Fitting-outSupperinMarch, St George’s Day Dinner, Trafalgar Day Supper and Laying-Up Supper in November. Of course we hold traditional festivities at Christmas and the New Year, including the Commodore’s Christmas Day Punch. During the winter there are monthly Film Nights with a nautical flavour, and the regular Quiz Nights are always fully subscribed. A unique feature for a sailing club is the regular poetry evenings, which have resulted in publication of “On Dover Beach” our own anthology of poetry, prose and art work by members. Other less formal events include a popular Beer Festival, Cockney Night, hog roasts, and barbecues associated with our sailing events and linked to the Dover Town Regatta in August. Of particular note is our close relationship with our neighbours across the Channel: we join with the Calais Yacht Club for their Bastille Day celebrations in July, and party on both sides of La Manche with the Yacht Club Boulonnaise for the Beaujolais Nouveau Rally in November!

Training Our very experienced Training Officer runs shore-based courses at the Club several times a year, to Day Skipper or Yachtmaster level. These run in the evenings over several weeks, and include the examination for the appropriate recognised RYA Certificate. One of our members, a retired surgeon, runs the RYA approved First Aid Course, also leading to the official certificate. These courses, usually at a weekend, are free to members, but are also open to non-members for a fee. For new members who simply want to gain some sailing experience, many of our skippers are pleased to take you on board and give informal instruction on the water during our cruising events or at other times – guaranteed no shouting! We plan to arrange more formal Open Days with tasters for those new to the sport during the 2010 season. Several of our Club members are also members of the Dover Lifeboat crew, and the lifeboat station is adjacent to the Marina. The Club participates in the RNLI Safety weekends, with demonstrations on and off the water, concentrating on safety equipment, the use of lifejackets, lifeboats, flares etc, and how to prepare for towing during a rescue. Opposite our Club, on the harbourside, is the Dover Water Sports Centre, which provides tuition in dinghy sailing and windsurfing.

Special events The Dover Town Regatta weekend in August sees the harbour front buzzing with activity, with food stalls, a French market, live music, sailing demos and dragon boat racing, culminating with a firework display after dark. The RCPYC outdoor seating area draws many visitors, and on the Sunday following the Blessing of the Sea by the Bishop of Dover there is the traditional Parade of Sail round the harbour by Club boats, dressed overall, saluted by the LordWarden, the Admiral Lord Boyce. August 2010 also sees the launch of our own Royal Cinque PortsRegatta, whichwillattractboatsfromourneighbouring clubs, followed by a barbecue with entertainment. In May we will host boats taking part in the 70th anniversary of the Dunkerque evacuation, with a reception and contribution to the spectator fleet accompanying the Little Ships. During the winter months we have a regular programme of talks from visiting speakers. At opposite ends of the nautical spectrum, we have hosted the master of the Royal Navy Support Vessel Wave Knight, and of the Paddle Steamer Waverley! One of our talks was given by Hilary Lister, prior to her amazing feat, becoming the first quadriplegic woman to sail single-handed round Britain: Hilary was appointed an honorary member of the RCPYC, and we were proud to present her with the Club pennant for her journey.
