hortlands Golf Club is conveniently located in a pleasant mature countryside setting close to Bromley and near to Orpington, Beckenham and Biggin Hill in Kent and Croydon in Surrey and is easily reachable from South London. The club dates back to the 19th century and in 1994 we celebrated the first 100 years of our wonderful golf club, still privately owned by the members. In all those years, the course has continued to challenge and delight golfers of all standards in equal measure. The course has 10 holes, ranging from two par 5s, some long par 4s and tight par 3s making it interesting as well as a test of accuracy. It is always kept in superb condition for us by our excellent team of greenkeepers. The River Ravensbourne runs alongside the opening holes and creates a natural feature in front of our final green in view of the comfortable clubhouse. When the sun is out and the blossom is in full bloom it’s difficult to imagine that we’re only 10 miles from Central London. The Course
S
hortlands Golf Club has been in existence since 1894. It is a flat parkland nine-hole course with fairly tight fairways, mature trees and both grass and sand bunkers with good greens. The yardage is 5,222 yards with a Standard Scratch Score of 65 for men and 69 for ladies. The course rewards the accurate, thoughtful golfer rather than the one who can drive the ball the furthest. To score well you need to be straight off the tee because the fairways are narrow with internal out of bounds if you stray too far off line. The greens are well bunkered and the greens themselves are comparatively small so again accuracy is a necessity with the approach shots. The course is always in immaculate condition, being maintained by our own team of three expert greenkeepers, all of whom play golf and all of whom understand the needs of golfers. An irrigation system was installed some years ago covering tees, greens and fairways so the course is kept in good condition during hot weather. But it also drains exceptionally well. We benefit from being on London gravel, which means that the course is rarely closed even in the wettest weather. In the event of heavy rain the course is usually reopened and playable within a couple of hours.

Hole-by-Hole Guide
P
repare for your visit to Shortlands by familiarising yourself with each hole over the coming pages and make the most of your round with our hole-by-hole guide and playing tips provided by our professional, Mark Wood. Hole 1, 457 yards, par 4 The River Ravensbourne, which accompanies you on your way to the first tee, marks the start of your round at Shortlands. The river continues along the left-hand side of the fairway of the first hole, concealed by the row of mature trees but is also out of bounds. So a straight, controlled, good length shot from the raised tee onto the fairway is the best way to start on this, the toughest hole on the course. Hole 2, 140 yards, par 3 As an antidote to the length of the first hole, the second is a short and pretty par 3. An accurate tee shot over the trees will land you on the green but beware of the strategically placed front and back bunkers, positioned to catch those a little off line. Hole 3, 381 yards, par 4 A short walk from the 2nd green to the 3rd tee takes you through the hedgerow that you’ll need to clear as a blind shot to hit the fairway of the 3rd. A par 4 straight hole with an undulating fairway but look out for the trees and the bunkers to the left and right of the green.

Hole 4, 135 yards, par 3 Try not to leave your tee shot short on this gentle par 3 or it’ll roll down into the dip, a former lake with a steep bank up to the green. The old poplar tree celebrates the large, greenside bunker on the left. The green undulates like a potato crisp so you’ll test your putting ability here too. Hole 5, 472 yards, par 5 From the deep 5th tee position, you’ll need to be accurate here. Woodland lines the route from the tee to the fairway 100 yards away so only a straight drive will keep you in play. Hole 6, 158 yards, par 3 A good length par 3, with a green surrounded by bunkers and trees can catch out even the most seasoned golfer. Over the back and you’re in thick woodland. Hole 7, 191 yards, par 3 Criss-crossing the fairway of the 6th is a full length par 3 and at 191 yards it also carries Stroke Index 7. There is a full-width fairway bunker guarding the front of the green and further bunkers and trees either side. So are you going to lay up or go for the green? Hole 8, 475 yards, par 5 A wide fairway gives you the chance to get a good-length drive away from the tee providing you keep it on the fairway. You’ll need to avoid the large fairway bunker 140 yards from the pin and the trees on the right to keep your score on track.

Hole 9, 229 yards, par 4 The shortest par 4 in the country is also one of the prettiest. There are several ways to play your tee shot and negotiate the tall trees obscuring your view of the fairway on this dog-legged hole. The generous, picturesque green has out of bounds on three sides and the River Ravensbourne to cross to reach it. Did we mention it’s a pound to the Captain’s Fund if the river catches you out? The Back Nine While the holes on the back nine will be familiar to you and offer a second chance to master the course, differing tee positions on many of them certainly give food for thought and leave dilemmas over club selection or which shape of shot to hit. The two holes on which you will notice the greatest difference from the front nine are the 14th and the 16th. Hole 14, 449 yards, par 4 On the face of it, the forward tee position of the 14th is less foreboding than the deep tee position of the par 5 5th. But the comfort comes at a price of a shot as the scorecard reveals this is now a long par 4. It represents a different challenge altogether and a tougher task to make a par. Hole 16, 166 yards, par 3 The unique 166-yard 16th is only played once here at Shortlands . It’s a straight par 3 with trees and out of bounds to the left and the green nestles amongst more bunkers including one on the front edge, adding a further challenge.

The club has an excellent PGA-qualified teaching professional in Mark Wood, allied to some fine practice facilities enabling you to ingrain the new skills you have learnt. If you have the desire to get better, Mark has the application to determination to help you achieve your goals, whatever they are. A selection of 30-minute lessons are available, covering any area of the game you wish to work on, from driving the ball with power and precision to the more delicate skills of chipping and putting. Becoming a Member

he club has vacancies for members in both the Men’s and Ladies’ sections.
7 day membership for men is available immediately for those with a recognised club handicap of 26 or lower or for ladies of any or no handicap. If you don’t have a handicap, don’t worry we’ll help you obtain one once you are a member. For those unable to play on Sundays or on weekends as a whole, Shortlands also has six-day memberships (Monday to Saturday) and five-day (Monday-Friday) memberships available. There is a competitive golf programme for all membership categories. With the average cost of a round of golf at a municipal course in excess of £24 on weekdays and £30 at weekends, consider how much that would equate to if you played just once a week. Now compare that to the cost of membership at Shortlands and you will quickly see that the latter represents outstanding value and is a compelling reason as to why you should consider joining one of Kent’s friendliest clubs. embers at Shortlands enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year. There are fixtures against other clubs, together with much competition to be enjoyed alongside fellow members, some for silverware and some of a more social nature. Men
As well as monthly matches, some of the more noted competitions played annually by the Men’s section include Board Competitions (various); St George’s Day Competition (April); Captain’s Week (June); Home International (July); St George’s Day Competition (April); Captain’s Week (June); Turkey Trot (late-October). Ladies The Ladies hold weekly competitions, play in a number of county fixtures, take part in matches against other clubs as well as with the Men’s section. There is an active competition team who take part in many of the events run by the Kent County Ladies Golf Association, including the Tappin Trophy, a three-a-side matchplay handicap tournament with one player from each of three different handicap bands and the Coombe Cup, a Knockout Foursomes midweek event for players aged 68 years and over.

Ladies (Cont.) The ladies also enter the very popular Pearson Trophy, which is played in a group format over the winter months. Section winners progress to a knockout phase, with the winners going on to represent Kent against the champions from Hertfordshire, Surrey and Middlesex in a winner-takes all final day. Shortlands were the Kent champions in this event in 2011. While the Ladies certainly enjoy representing Shortlands against other clubs, there is also great emphasis placed on the social element of ladies’ golf. Antiquarians For those aged 60 and above there is an Antiquarians’ section who run their own competitions and take part in matches against veterans’ sections in other clubs. Juniors Shortlands has a very successful Junior section and welcome new members aged between 5-17 years. Special rates apply for members between 18 and 21 in full-time education, please ask for details.

Dress Code and Etiquette
T
he Club has a strict dress code, which broadly means golfers will not be allowed on the course or in the clubhouse unless they are suitably attired.
Rules on the course dictate that shirts should have collars and sleeves, or be approved golfing apparel, and only tailored shorts and trousers, plain socks and approved golf shoes are allowed. No trainers, T-shirts, tracksuits or sports shorts are permitted. In the clubhouse, patrons must wear shirts with collars and trousers or tailored shorts (except on Sundays in the lounge). Denim jeans, hats, caps, visors or soiled golf apparel are unacceptable. Mobile phones are not to be used on the course or in the clubhouse – they may be used in the foyer or on the patio. Members repeatedly transgressing the code will have their membership revoked. Visitors to the course are welcome with a member. The club member is responsible for the guest adhering to the dress code and to the rules of golf.

he clubhouse offers great comfort and a welcoming atmosphere in which to socialise and relax either after a round of golf or as members of the club.
The bar is well stocked with a wide selection of beers, wines, and spirits and a choice of non-alcoholic drinks. Hot and cold food is served daily seven days a week. Our members are partial to traditional golfer’s fare and you can enjoy a range of tasty and filling snacks such as burgers or omelettes, together with a range of sandwiches. The spacious lounge area is the heart of our clubhouse. e are a popular choice for events of all kinds and can provide a memorable and welcoming venue for your special occasion. Our flexibility means we are able to cater for large parties or a more intimate affair. If you are planning a wedding reception, a family get-together, birthday or anniversary party, then look no further than Shortlands. Please note, though, that we do not accept bookings for 18th or 21st birthday parties. The clubhouse can accommodate about 84 people for a sit-down meal or up to 100 for a buffet reception. Our caterers have an excellent reputation and will work with you to create the menu of your choice and to the requirements of your budget. Event organisers are free to have access to the function room from mid-afternoon, enabling them to put up any decorations they desire. With the day’s golf over, the room is free from early evening, ready for the arrival of the guests. We are also a considerate host of funeral receptions and can take on all the organisation for you at what can be an emotional and stressful time. Social Activities
W
ith its friendly membership and welcoming clubhouse, members at Shortlands Golf Club have equally as enjoyable a time off the course as they do on it.
A varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in entertainment. These occasions range from the traditional celebration of Christmas and the welcoming in of the New Year to theme evenings such as London Nights featuring Pearly Kings and Queens, entertainment from a Rat Pack tribute act and even bingo. Many of the social activities revolve around the golf, with one of the highlights being a Home International competition amongst the members followed by a dinner and disco. With prize-giving nights and events to support the captain’s chosen charities, there is always something going on of interest. There is even a keen bridge club which meets regularly. For non-golfers or those who no longer play the game, Shortlands offers a social membership which affords members the opportunity to attend club functions or simply relax and enjoy the day-to-day hospitality and camaraderie to be found in the clubhouse.

hortlands Golf Club is located at Shortlands, less than a mile away from Bromley town centre in Kent.
For satellite navigation purposes our postcode is BR2 0DX. Directions From London Take the A20 and then the A21 southbound to Bromley. Upon reaching the town turn right onto the A222 Beckenham Road and you will find the turning into Meadow Lane, where the club is situated, about half a mile down on the right. From the South Head towards Bromley on the A21 before turning left onto the A222 Beckenham Road and picking up the directions above. From the East and West The club is on Meadow Lane, just off the A222, half a mile beyond Bromley town centre if travelling from the east and half a mile before it if travelling from the west. Public Transport The nearest railway station is Shortlands, which is just 200 yards from the club. Several trains an hour run to London Victoria or London Blackfriars and to Orpington and Sevenoaks in the opposite direction. The club is at the end of Meadow Road, the first turning left off the A222 Beckenham Road on the north-east side of the station. Shortlands Golf Club - 33
