Welcome
Silverdale Golf Club is home to an 18-hole course set in beautiful countryside in Carnforth, between Lancaster and Kendal in northern Lancashire. Located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), it has wonderful views across the RSPB’s Leighton Moss Nature Reserve to Morecambe Bay and to the Lakeland and Howgill Fells. The surrounding scenery may be breathtaking, but the course is pretty special, too. The layout of 5,592 yards plays to a par of 70. While there are chances for birdie, there are also some difficult holes, which is why we appeal to golfers of all ages and abilities. Visitors and golfing societies are always welcome to enjoy Silverdale’s hospitality, combining some unforgettable golf with fine food and refreshment in our refurbished clubhouse. We also stage several open golf competitions from April to September and host a popular Winter Series that spans the remaining six months of the year. Silverdale celebrated its centenary in 2006 and has joined up with 39 other clubs founded in the same year to create The 1906 Club, offering our members free golf by arrangement at other clubs participating in the scheme. So whether you live in the area, are visiting, or passing by please call in for a round of golf, a drink or a meal. Great golf… great food… great prices… great scenery – the Silverdale experience really is one to savour!

The Course
Our course is a par 70 measuring 5,592 yards and is of two halves, open parkland and tight narrow valleys with heathland and limestone pavement. On each hole you will enjoy delightful views, abundant flora and birdlife. The early morning golfer may be joined by roe and fallow deer and this unspoilt location is also home to the rare Ladies Slipper orchid. It is an exciting course and one in which boredom never sets in. As the course is on limestone the drainage is good so we rarely close in poor weather. Each hole offers its own particular challenge, but perhaps the most memorable is the 304-yard par-4 13th called The Plateau. It is indeed different and achieved a certain national notoriety in 2003 when it was included in a book entitled Britain’s 100 Extraordinary Golf Holes (Aesculus Press). The book’s editors, Geoff Harvey and Vanessa Strowger, said: “We were looking for holes where, at some point along the route from the tee, the player would stare in amazement at the scene that greeted him.” Come and see what makes this hole special, and don’t forget to bring your camera, because any friends not making the trip will scarcely believe your story without pictorial evidence! Silverdale has some excellent practice facilities available to those seeking to work on their game. There is a 300-yard-long practice area between the 9th and 10th holes with 100, 150, 200 and 250 yard markers. A chipping and bunker area can be found near to the 18th green and there is a putting green close to the car park which always runs true to the greens on the course. Silverdale Golf Club

Club History
Silverdale Golf Club celebrated its centenary in 2006. The club was officially formed on November 10, 1906 and play began on April 6, 1907. The Challenge Cup, which was presented by Colonel Morley Saunders to mark the club’s inauguration, is still played for today. Ladies’ golf competitions began in September 1908. Except for the years of the First World War when competitions were suspended, competitions and monthly medals have continued to this day. The club was originally, like many in the area, a nine-hole course, but whereas most of the local courses failed to survive the Great War, Silverdale prospered and grew. It became a 12-hole course in 1992 and in preparation for our centenary a further six holes were developed in 2002. These were officially opened on July 7, 2002, by Gary Wolstenholme, a former Silverdale member, who was at that time the club’s patron. Gary remains England’s most capped amateur golfer who has the proud achievement of beating Tiger Woods in singles play at the 1995 Walker Cup. The course is now a combination of rolling, open parkland with Myers Dyke presenting a challenge on three holes of the new section and the short steep limestone outcrops and mature trees of the original nine-hole course. This allows Silverdale Golf Club to be one of the most exciting, attractive and scenic courses in the whole region and one in which boredom never sets in.

Take the Course Tour
Prepare for your visit to Silverdale by familiarising yourself with each hole over the coming pages and make the most of your round with our hole-by-hole guide. You can prepare yourself for the challenges that await, as well as pick up some invaluable playing tips from our club professionals, Ceri and Alyn Cousins. Hole 1 (Valley) 400 yards, par 4 You need a good drive to the marker post. This leaves the green open but go left and you are in trouble. This is a difficult par 4 to start and do not be disappointed with a 5. Hole 2 (Beckside) 156 yards, par 3 A reasonable par 3 guarded by a bunker in front but wayward shots right or left could be severely punished. Hole 3 (Trowbarrow) 338 yards, par 4 A good drive to the centre of the fairway should give you a good opportunity of par, but beware out of bounds all down the left-hand side.
Hole 4 (Bay) 356 yards, par 4 Don’t let the view of Morecambe Bay in the distance make you lose focus on what needs to be a good drive. Stay right, all the danger is down the left side. The second shot is downhill. Hole 5 (Knott) 358 yards, par 4 A long carry, but a well-struck tee shot will give you every chance of par. Stay well away from the wall on the left with your approach into the green. Hole 6 (Pheasantry) 367 yards, par 4 Needs a well-placed drive. All the danger is on the right. If this is avoided there’s a good chance of making your par. Silverdale Golf Club

Take the Course Tour continued
Hole 7 (Myers Dyke) 144 yards, par 3 A good hole with a long carry over Myers Dyke but a solid tee shot will give you every chance of a par. Hole 8 (Otter Run) 360 yards, par 4 A good drive over Myers Dyke leaves a slight dog-leg for your second shot. A well-placed shot gives you a birdie opportunity. Hole 9 (Station) 490 yards, par 5 Tricky par 5. A long drive is required (beware, the practice ground to the right is out of bounds) if you want to clear Myers Dyke with your second shot. If not, lay up and leave yourself a long third shot to green. Good large green but be happy if you come off with a 6.
12
Silverdale Golf Club
Hole 10 (Railside) 393 yards, par 4 Long driving hole with the practice ground to the right; the left over the wall being out of bounds. Wayward shots by the men sometimes leave their ball on the train to Barrow! Be careful, the green has a bunker on the right. Having said all that, not a difficult par. Hole 11 (Storeys Ridge) 480 yards, par 5 Second par 5. The first fairway on the right is not out of bounds but it leaves an awkward second shot. Third shot is to a raised green which is guarded by trees on all sides. Hole 12 (Quillet) 268 yards, par 4 Fairly straightforward, watch for trees on right of green, but if you avoid these you should get your par.
Hole 13 (Plateau) 304 yards, par 4 Beware, many a good card is ruined at this hole, which is Silverdale’s signature hole and one which gained some degree of fame after being featured in a book named Britain’s 100 Extraordinary Golf Holes. A good drive into the valley leaves an intimidating second shot to a raised green guarded by rock face. Now known as ‘The Plateau’, it was formerly and more imaginatively labelled by some ‘The Pulpit’ and once you have played it you will understand why. Hole 14 (Oaks) 151 yards, par 3 Stroke 18 on the card but don’t be fooled, not an easy hole but a very nice par 3. Hole 15 (Orchard) 267 yards, par 4 Play for position around 150 yards from the tee to put your ball in the perfect spot to negotiate the dog-leg left.
Hole 16 (Quarry) 306 yards, par 4 Not a long hole, but there is trouble both right and left and an accurate drive is required. Hole 17 (Road) 305 yards, par 4 Fairly straightforward but be careful of out of bounds all down the right of fairway. Hole 18 (Leighton Moss) 149 yards, par 3 Almost home now. To finish is a very picturesque par 3 giving you the opportunity to finish a memorable game of golf with a birdie.

Men The men have a flourishing section with monthly medals played on Sundays. Other reserved tee times are on Saturdays and friendly competitions are held on most Friday evenings. The men’s teams play in both the Cumbria and Lunesdale leagues, which play in the evenings. Friendly matches are also arranged against other local clubs. The men play for many trophies, some of the oldest and most cherished are: the Morley Saunders Challenge Cup (1907), the Captain’s Cup (1928), the Captain’s Day Trophy (1928), the Veterans’ Cup (1930), the Roberts Trophy (1930), the Club Championship (1950), the Rabbits’ Trophy (1954); and for a knock-out competition - the Scar (1934). There are many newer competitions which are all well supported. The usual major golfing events such as various Men’s Invitation Days to Captain’s Day, President’s Day to the Men’s Open take place culminating in the Men’s dinner and presentation night in late November. Seniors This is a popular section of the club for those members who are retired or over 55. They meet on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays throughout the year for an afternoon of golf. A programme of monthly medals (April to October) for the over-60s only are played but most of their golf is for fun. Friendly matches are arranged with clubs as far away as Cockermouth and Fishwick (Preston). The seniors also organise a Senior Open, a golfing holiday, an all-prize Christmas Bottle Competition and dinner in December and have a match against the Ladies for an annual trophy where competition is certainly intense but always friendly. 22
Silverdale Golf Club
The aim of the Seniors’ section is to provide a facility which will attract new (retired) members, assuring them of a warm welcome at all times. Ladies This section caters both for the working and leisured members. Reserved tee times are on Wednesdays and on Sunday mornings throughout the year. Ladies also meet informally on a Monday morning. There are three formal teams. The Shield team plays in the silver league of the Lancashire Ladies Golf Union. This team won the 2006 Interclub Handicap Team Trophy against the whole of Lancashire in the final held at Leigh Golf Club. There is also a bronze team and a Three Counties Handicap Shield team (H4) which plays at the weekend and is especially for the working woman. Friendly matches are arranged both at home and away during the main golfing months. The Ladies organise invitation golf events in addition to the popular Ladies Open which is held at Silverdale each year. Every year sees a popular and well-supported away day to another club and the annual presentation evening towards the end of the year is always eagerly anticipated. The ladies also organise the many social events in the club, one of the highlights being a Christmas Dinner in early December. As in many clubs, the ladies organise and run the flourishing Bridge section which is open to all. Throughout the winter, bridge is played on most Thursday afternoons either socially or against other bridge teams of local golf clubs. Once a season Silverdale hosts an invitation bridge competition, which is a popular event. Silverdale Golf Club

The 1906 Club

More than 60 clubs were founded in 1906 and to date 40 have joined The 1906 Club including the prestigious and spectacular Swiss course, Crans-sur Sierre, which is home of the Swiss Open Golf Tournament. Our belonging to this group offers outstanding benefits to Silverdale members, including: Courtesy and reciprocal golfing rights to all affiliated clubs. Members can play, in groups of eight or fewer, on any of the courses of the affiliated clubs once a year in perpetuity as long as they are at least 50 miles from the home club. The clubs are scattered over the length and breadth of the United Kingdom and offer the opportunity to see some of our nation’s other glorious courses. Members who wish to play at one of The 1906 Club courses need to see the secretary Barbara Hebdon who will provide a letter of introduction, then phone the course and go and enjoy playing your round. Member clubs hold an annual competition, which Silverdale won in its inaugural year of 2005. The winners of the event host the competition the following year

Open Competitions
Silverdale Golf Club is always delighted to showcase its outstanding course and offers golfers of all abilities the opportunity to play here in a series of Open competitions which are held throughout the year. The Open season generally starts and finishes with a Texas Scramble competition, one in April featuring mixed teams of three and one in September for teams of four male golfers. In between, we try to provide something for everyone, with team events for Ladies, Men, Senior Men and Mixed Pairs. In addition, there is a Spring Open event held in May and July sees an Am-Am event. Both these competitions feature teams of four. Details of the dates for the 2012 competitions can be found on our website, www.silverdalegolfclub.co.uk. Do not despair if these events have passed you by, because we take pride in being able to offer competitive golf to all-comers 12 months of the year. The gap from October to March is filled by our hugely popular Winter Series, which features one event per fortnight (excluding Christmas and New Year) alternating between a four-ball better-ball and stableford format. Points are awarded to the top ten finishers and an order of merit prize is presented at the end of the series, competitors having to play a minimum of five events to qualify. The Clubhouse
The clubhouse underwent major renovation and refurbishment in 2006 in order that Silverdale could celebrate its centenary in style. The dining room and lounge were redecorated and refurbished to a high standard, a large flat screen television was installed and the Centenary Bar was re-designed. The ladies gained a larger and refurbished locker room while the men’s facilities were redecorated. The money used to fund all these improvements was raised by members with their many social events. Overlooking the 18th green, the clubhouse is the perfect place in which to relax and catch up with friends and enjoy a relaxing drink and some food after what we trust was a pleasurable round. The bar and catering facilities are open seven days per week in the summer and from Tuesday to Sunday in the winter months. Opening times are usually from 11am-6pm in the winter and 11am-10pm in the summer. Draft beers and real ales are available, as well as a selection of wines and many non-alcoholic drinks. Our new caterer, Stephen Edwards, offers a varied and extensive menu featuring anything from light snacks to sit-down meals, with plenty of additional tempting offers on the specials board. Breakfasts, lunches and evening meals are available and Sunday lunches are a speciality. Themed food evenings featuring Italian and Spanish dishes have also proved popular, as has a steak night. Another hit has been the fish and chip supper on a Friday, which has been offered in the clubhouse and as a takeaway service. Silverdale Golf Club

Social Membership
To maintain links with the club many veteran members continue as a social member once their playing days are over. It costs just £20 per annum to become a social member. These are a group of members who join to enjoy the clubhouse and entertainment and who are greatly valued by the club. Some social members join as a “Buddy” with their children so that they can join their child as a non-player on the course and help their child to improve their golf. Other social members join to play in the flourishing bridge section, which currently has around 40 playing members. This friendly, welcoming group plays on Thursday afternoons from 1.30pm, with sessions running from the end of April to the middle of September. A full calendar of events is available before each session begins and the bridge section is always delighted to greet new players. Members at Silverdale make good use of the excellent clubhouse facilities and there are a number of organised events as well as themed food nights offered by our fine catering team. All social members can, by joining The 100 Club, become a member of the Friends of Silverdale Golf Club and enter the quarterly draw for a share in the profits of the 100 Club.
