he Club lies in the heart of West Cornwall, most notable for its heritage of tin mining, many relics of which can still be seen in the area. Although only two miles from the North Cornwall coast, the course is very definitely parkland in nature, having been established within the parks of a one time eminent Cornish family. In 1922, businessmen from the Camborne-Redruth area leased 75 acres of the erstwhile Bassett Estate and enlisted the help of one of the great Cornishmen, the Open Champion Jim Barnes, to advise them on the layout of the first course. This was in play in October of 1922 and at that time measured what we would now consider to be a meagre 5,000 yards. With the equipment of the day and the existence of fine woodland, it would, no doubt, have been as tough a test as the present layout. Shortly after World War II, the noted golf course architect C.K.Cotton was utilised to design and build some noteworthy improvements, bringing the course to only a little short of its current length of 6,241 yards. It should be added that the course, although undulating, is never unduly arduous to walk, the only tough climb being up the difficult par-4 15th hole of 443 yards.

I
n 1996 the freehold was purchased and in 1998 extensive work was undertaken to provide an improved watering system, which incorporated the building of three lakes, which have a significant presence on the closing holes of the course. Continuous improvement is now a watchword of the Club and the appointment in 2002 of Head Greenkeeper Andrew Eddison should ensure that future improvements are carried out to the highest standards. The lakes are also now the permanent home of a pair of swans who delight the membership annually by producing a brood of cygnets. Moorhen and Mallard may also be seen there regularly. Since 1999, thousands of young trees have been planted and when they reach maturity, Tehidy Park will indeed be a tight and demanding course through its entire length. It is currently a mixture of open holes, some with streams at strategic points, many with tree lined fairways and nine holes where out of bounds comes into play. The lakes to which we have previously referred also have a part to play on four holes, especially the 193-yard, par-3, 17th where a carry from the medal tee of close to 170 yards is required to ensure safety. It is no exaggeration to say that of the thousands who have visited the course over the years, few have left with a view other than that Tehidy Park is a good, fair, test of golf.

olf lessons are readily available with Jonathan Lamb, our PGA Head Professional. Whichever area of your game is proving problematical, Jonathan is able to help, whether it is the long game, chipping or putting. His relaxed and effective coaching style can help address the most frequent headaches for the casual golfer, such as how to gain more consistency with the longer shafted clubs or how to remove the fear factor from bunker play.
Jonathan has a proven track record, teaching at every level all over the world, including 12 years at Woburn Golf Club, and offers a wide range of tuition options. He is a firm believer in the use of video if he feels it would help his student’s game and offers professional analysis using C-Swing software technology. Review the fundamentals of grip, alignment, posture and swing plane and take away a personal analysis DVD. Playing lessons offer on-course golf instruction and evaluation which covers alignment, shot making strategy, course management and pre-shot routine. Golf schools and individual golf training days can be designed to accommodate and fulfil players’ individual requirements. ehidy Park Golf Club warmly welcomes members of all ages and golfing ability. We host weekly competitions throughout the main golfing season, with the very popular Winter League being played through the winter months. During the course of the year we also stage many Open Competitions. Jonathan Lamb, our resident PGA Head Professional, provides excellent tuition and coupled with our excellent practice ground we feel we have all the components to allow our members to become as good at the game of golf as their talent, application and time allows. Players may chart their progress and view club results on the internet through the popular HowDidiDo network. We consider ourselves a well rounded club and as well as being extremely passionate about our golf, a new member or visitor to Tehidy will soon discover the friendliness and camaraderie that exists between our members. We have a range of memberships on offer, the most popular being the full membership allowing access to our course and facilities seven days a week. We have become a popular venue for visiting societies to Cornwall with many returning year after year. The golf course, which meanders through the old Bassett Estate, is recognised as one of the best courses in the county and has hosted numerous Cornwall County Competitions as well as South West PGA Pro-Ams throughout its long history. The Clubhouse has been completely renovated over the last few years with new changing and shower rooms installed. ehidy Park is a friendly golf club with a lovely course in a special part of the world and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent facilities with people who may not have experienced it before. One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of Open competitions throughout the year aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities. One of the particular highlights of the golfing year at Tehidy is Festival Week, generally held in August. This sees five days of competition with different events each day, beginning with a Texas Scramble on the Monday and featuring Individual Stableford and Mixed Foursomes (both on the same day, Tuesday), a Better-Ball Stableford on Wednesday, Four-Ball Team Event on Thursday and concluding with a Three-Ball Team Event. Other events are run throughout the golfing season and there is something for everyone: men, seniors, ladies or juniors. ehidy Park Golf Club has been at the forefront of Cornish golf for a very long time and as well as producing a number of high calibre golfers, we have also enjoyed many team successes as a club.
While competing at a high level is always something to aspire to, we are equally proud of our course having been frequently chosen to host events run by the Cornwall Golf Union and our players are often chosen to represent Cornwall in competitions against other counties. Tehidy Park has enjoyed notable success in recent seasons, winning the Cornwall Team Championship (CTC), the premier team title within the CGU calendar, for three successive years from 2006 to 2008. 2008, in fact was one of the most memorable years in the club’s history, with the men completing a noteworthy treble, by also winning the CAW Cornwall Bowl and Frank Wills Salver. Not to be outdone, that same year saw Tehidy Park’s Ladies lift The Western Morning News Trophy, Bronze Shield and the Gammon Trophy. In 2011, our men lifted the Maxam Cup for a record eighth time as they prevailed over the host club in near galeforce afternoon winds at Perranporth. Individually, Tehidy members George Medlyn (1957 & 1972) and Richard Simmons (1984 & 1986) have both won the Cornwall Amateur Championship twice, while there have also been successes for RGW Sanders (1963), Peter Ward (1971), C Carveth (1974) and C Llewelyn (2001). Our current club Secretary/ Manager, Ian Veale, was also County Champion in 2005, the year he joined the club, a record-equalling sixth time he had won the title. Tehidy’s Miss Muriel Roskrow is the most decorated lady golfer in Cornish history, having been crowned county champion a staggering 18 times. She was also capped as an England international and became the South West Amateur Champion in 1947 and 1949.

IAN VEALE Secretary/Manager Ian joined Tehidy Park Golf Club in April 2005, having spent three years in his first secretarial position at West Cornwall Golf Club. Prior to that he spent 17 years working in the corporate banking sector with HSBC. A distinguished player in his own right, Ian has won the Cornwall Amateur Championship on no fewer than six occasions and has represented the county numerous times. A one-time member of the elite England squad, he still enjoys competitive golf and has been a part of the Tehidy team which has enjoyed so much success in recent seasons. MARTIN & KATHY HOYLE Catering and Bar Managers Husband and wife team Martin and Kathy provide the welcoming faces inside the clubhouse at Tehidy. Having been at the club for more than 20 years, they are hugely popular with members and visitors alike, and are the longest serving golf club catering team in the county providing a catering service second to none. JONATHAN LAMB PGA Professional Jonathan joined Tehidy Park Golf Club as Head Professional in September 2005 and has become a much valued and well respected member of the team. He spent 12 years as a teaching professional at Woburn Golf Club as a young understudy to Alex Hay before coming to Cornwall, where he enjoyed spells first at Trevose Golf Club and then as Head Professional at Cape Cornwall Golf Club. A friendly face and an excellent instructor, Jonathan is also head coach at the Truro College Golf Academy. ANDREW EDDISON Head Greenkeeper Andrew joined Tehidy Park Golf Club in the summer of 2002 and has been responsible for some significant enhancements to the course. The tireless work ethic and impeccable standards set by Andrew and his greenkeeping staff means members will always have a course of which they can be proud. The team received the English Golf Environment Award in 2009 in recognition of our commitment to ecological good practice.

ehidy Park Golf Club holds regular social events throughout the year with great food and live music.
We have a very friendly membership, who not only enjoy each other’s company out on the course, but also in the clubhouse after a round and on the many occasions throughout the year that members get together. For non-golfers or lapsed players who enjoy a good time, we also offer a Social Membership. Quiz Nights take place every Thursday evening during the winter months and have proved to be very popular. Although prizes are on offer, it is more of a social evening with participants testing their knowledge in a fun way. The current Club Captain and President host two of the several Dinner and Dances that take place throughout the year. With other entertainment featuring the likes of a Halloween banquet, a Bistro Party Night and an Irish-themed Party night, there really is something for everyone. Traditional dates in the calendar such as Christmas and New Year and Mother’s Day are not allowed to pass without Tehidy members marking the occasion and most months the club hosts a Sunday lunch which is always well attended. From the East (Devon side) 1. Leave the A30 road at the exit signposted for Camborne and Portreath. 2. On the slip road, take the right fork and turn right at the junction. 3. After passing under the bridge, take the second left, signposted Portreath and Tehidy Golf Club. 4. At the mini roundabouts, continue straight across. 5. At the T junction, turn right. (Blind bend). 6. At the crossroads, give way and then turn left. 7. After about 1,000 yards, turn left. Follow the drive to the bottom into Tehidy Park Golf Club car park.
