Our light and spacious clubhouse at Waldringfield Golf Club with its two bars and spacious restaurant is the ideal haven for relaxation, celebration - or even recuperation! Whether alone or in a group, you can enjoy excellent food and a wonderful range of beers, spirits, soft drinks - and fine wines from our cellar. An extensive selection of tasty food is available daily ranging from home-made cakes to light snacks and hearty meals, as well as our Chef’s Specials, all prepared on site with fresh produce from local suppliers. We are also a favourite venue for weddings, special occasions, parties large or small and for corporate gatherings. Whatever the occasion our friendly staff will make sure your visit is a wonderful experience. Our attractive par 71, 18-hole course was created in 1983 and is located on the south bank of the picturesque River Deben. It is a challenging but fair test for golfers of all abilities. Substantial investment has been committed to the care and maintenance of the course in recent years and we are a popular destination for visiting golfers and societies. The Course Our attractive par 71, 18-hole course at Waldringfield was created in 1983. The course is located on the south bank of the picturesque River Deben, half way along its navigable length from Woodbridge to Felixstowe. Designed by P. Pilgrem as a 9-hole course, Waldringfield was extended to 18 holes in 1987, creating an extremely picturesque heathland course which has developed into a veritable golfing gem. Now measuring 6,085 yards from the white tees it offers an enjoyable challenge to scratch golfers and beginners alike, as well as being particular attractive to older golfers given its flat nature and the ability to hire powered trolleys and buggies. In recent years substantial new investment has been committed to the care and maintenance of the course, including the construction of our reservoir which can hold 2 million gallons of water for those dry summer months. Alternatively, during wet winter months, our free-draining sandy soil allows for virtually uninterrupted play even after the heaviest of downpours. Year on year improvements such as the careful reshaping of greens and fairways and the addition of new sand traps has created an excellent challenge. Nature also provides the hazards in the form of gorse, which pervades the entire course. This prickly shrub with its attractive yellow flowers and delicious almond scent is in bloom for most of the year. All these elements demand accuracy from tee to green whilst still maintaining the ability for fast moving, free-flowing play. Returning visitors are amazed such improvements can be made in just a few seasons.

Take the Course Tour If you have never played Waldringfield before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our course tour courtesy of Alex Lucas, our PGA Professional. Hole 1, 216 yards, par 3 An extremely challenging par 3 with a well protected two-tier Mackenzie green. Laying up is an option but if you are going to try and hit the green it is vital you hit a club that will cover the yardage. Hole 2, 519 yards, par 5 A fantastic risk/reward par 5! Straight long hitters can eat this hole up but don’t get it 8

wrong because wayward shots can be punished by out of bounds on the right and thick gorse bushes and trees left. Hole 3, 173 yards, par 3 Taking the correct club at this hole is where the secret lies, with a 40-yard green protected by two front bunkers the difference between a front and back hole position can mean a three to four club change. Hole 4, 382 yards, par 4 Hitting the fairway is paramount on this hole, with a tree line right and gorse bushes left a wayward tee shot can be punished. Its massive two-tier Mackenzie green means finding the correct tier is important.
Hole 5, 583 yards, par 5 A very long straight par 5 protected by a row of gorse down the left side of the hole and two guarding bunkers short of the green. Hole 6, 183 yards, par 3 A well-guarded par 3 with a double green shared with the 12th hole. There are two bunkers ready to collect any shots short of this green so it is vital you hit enough club to land on the green. A gap between the bunkers does offer the opportunity of a running shot onto the green but watch out for those bunkers.
Hole 7, 489 yards, par 5 Another risk/reward par 5 with a wellbunkered fairway and out of bounds up the right side. Big hitters can go for this green in two shots but with out of bounds five yards right of the green and trouble left there is an element of danger.
Hole 9, 326 yards, par 4 Avoiding a well-bunkered fairway is the key to this hole. A good tee shot, though, will only leave a short iron into a generous green. Big hitters can get very close to this hole with a back wind but be careful with out of bounds all up the right side.
Hole 8, 317 yards, par 4 A positional tee shot is required here to get a mid to short iron shot left to a sunken bowlshaped green. Big hitters can consider driving this hole downwind but beware: wild shots will be punished.
Hole 10, 277 yards, par 4 A good drive here will get you up and around the green and set up a birdie chance, but be aware that with a well-bunkered two-tier green and out of bounds lurking only a few steps over the back accidents can still happen.
.Hole 11, 109 yards, par 3 A short par 3 with a large green offers a birdie chance for good tee shots. Any shots right of the green will find a water hazard and a waste area protects the first 80 yards of this hole. Hole 12, 523 yards, par 5 A slight right-to-left par 5 with trouble lurking for errant tee shots both left and right with two bunkers protecting the front of the green. Big hitters can get this green in two shots but only off a long accurate drive. It has a very large double green shared with the 6th hole.

Hole 13, 387 yards, par 4 A good drive here will get you into a position to attack the green. Shorter or wayward tee shots may have to lay up with the sloping green being well protected by bunkers down the right side and out of bounds not too far away down the left side of the green. Hole 14, 342 yards, par 4 A fantastic par 4 that would grace any golf course. On this right-to-left dog-leg a good tee shot is vital as even a slightly wayward drive will make the second shot progressively harder. An extremely well-guarded threetier green is not one you want to miss with bunkers and trouble lurking all around.
Hole 15, 383 yards, par 4 With trouble all down the right and the left side of the fairway well guarded with bunkers the tee shot is the key to mastering this hole. A generous back-to-front sloped green protected by front bunkers offers a further challenge once you have found the green, enforcing its stroke index of number 2. Hole 16, 319 yards, par 4 A real challenge from the back tee where nothing else but a well-placed drive will find the fairway. A well-bunkered slightly raised green offers a birdie chance as a reward for good approach shots.
Hole 17, 367 yards, par 4 A good tee shot here is the key to setting up a final birdie chance but be aware a misplaced tee shot can get punished. A short iron approach into a back-to-front sloped green helps control you approach shot. Hole 18, 190 yards, par 3 A tough par 3 finishing hole with water surrounding the right side of the green and trees protecting the left side. An accurate tee shot is your only option here as trouble lurks all around but you do have the option to lay up. A par 3 here will have you leaving the golf course very happy!

Practice Facilities Waldringfield Golf Club is committed to offering its members all the facilities possible to enable members the chance to become as proficient at this great game of golf as their talent and application allows. As well as the highly-regarded tuition on offer from our head professional, Alex Lucas, there are several areas where players can work on ingraining new swing thoughts or turning previously weaker areas of the game into strengths.
The club is lucky to have its own practice hole, which gives members the opportunity to work on perfecting their approach shots. The short game is not overlooked, either, with a chipping green and practice area enabling the dedicated player the chance to work on those round-saving shots around the green. A practice bunker enables further fine tuning to ensure greenside traps are something to be relished as a challenge rather than feared as a potential card-wrecker.
A very nice nine-hole putting green perfectly situated right outside the clubhouse mirrors the fine surfaces to be found out on the course. For those where time is at a premium, there are two practice nets which afford the opportunity to get loose before beginning a round.

Becoming a Member Golf is an extremely popular sport with people from all walks of life. It offers stress-busting fresh air, healthy exercise and a sporting fascination that comes from personal challenge and friendly competition with others. Beyond that there is every opportunity to join in the wonderful camaraderie that is part of the club’s family-friendly social scene.
New club members are always made welcome, and here at Waldringfield we keep our membership options simple. All members have equal status regardless of age, sex and ability, and all subscription rates are for full 7-day membership. There are no gimmicks – we just believe in offering outstanding value and service. Waldringfield enjoys a particularly large and active seniors section, however junior members are actively welcomed and encouraged from a young age, with regular academy tutorials available throughout the summer.
Our golfing year begins on 1st April and new membership subscriptions are calculated pro rata from the joining date. Full details and prices can be found via the current application form which is available to download from our website. You will find that you will play more being a member, while at the same time having the opportunity to enter club competitions, represent Waldringfield against other clubs and make new friends on and off the course.

Playing Categories Members at Waldringfield enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year. There are fixtures against other clubs, together with much competition to be enjoyed alongside fellow members, some for silverware and some of a more social nature. Men Our male golfers are very keen supporters of the county’s club competitions. They enter a team in the Stenson Shield, a scratch knockout competition with a Ryder Cup-style format featuring four matches of foursomes 20

in the morning and eight games of singles in the afternoon. Waldringfield also takes part in the Hambro Cup and the Tolly Cobbold Cup, both foursomes team events featuring 36 holes of golf. The former is for single-figure handicappers, the latter for those with handicaps of ten and above. The men play only the occasional friendly because of the number of competitions played at the club means the fixture list is fairly congested!
Within the club there are a great many honours board competitions, the most prestigious of which is the Club Championship which is played over 36 holes on a single day. There are several one-day events for silverware such as the Ron Hawkins Cup and the 1922 Cup, played over 18 holes, while to keep the interest during the less golf-friendly seasons, there is a winter league and an autumn series run over a number of weeks, with the winner being the player with the best combined scores.
A number of groups of members play on given days, using the excellent booking system available at the club and if you are a keen golfer with time to spare, it is very possible to find some like-minded individuals to join on every day of the week. Other fun social competitions such as Texas scrambles and mixed matches are a regular feature of club life.
Ladies

The Ladies are a very friendly group who enjoy each other’s company as much as a good game of golf. Ladies day at the club is Tuesday, with Thursday also being a popular day for our female membership to take to the course.
Spring and autumn meetings form some of the competitive highlights within the club, though the singles, pairs, and mixed championships held throughout the year are perhaps the events prized above all others.
Members sign up for competitions but instead of choosing their partner pairings are drawn. That means that no cliques are formed, everyone knows everyone else very quickly and it is much easier for new

The county’s team knockout competitions are always supported, with Waldringfield entering the Stearn Trophy and Cranworth Trophy (for mid and higher-handicappers respectively). The Suffolk Seniors Shield, for ladies aged 55 and over, is an event which has also been supported in recent seasons. There are also friendly matches against other clubs, which normally sees pairs playing foursomes. Less serious in nature, these matches are the perfect way to see if your game is up to the rigours of representing your club in competition! 22

Seniors The Seniors Section, for golfers aged 55 and over, is affectionately known as the WAGS, or Waldringfield Ancient Golfers. They also enter team events organised by the Suffolk Golf Union, the Parks Trophy (for handicaps of 12 and below) and the Beaumont Trophy (handicaps of 13 and above). In addition, there are two main external single-day competitions played against other clubs to be enjoyed.
Golf 55 is a four-way team event in mid-April with Rushmere, Stowmarket and Fynn Valley. Twelve golfers form a team, six of whom must be aged between 60 and 68 and the other six aged 69 and over. Then there is the Vets Inter-club Tournament which features 11 clubs of nine players in a team. Friendly golf forms a large part of the Seniors’ calendar with 26 matches being enjoyed throughout the year. Played in a pairs format, matches often feature as many as eight pairs per side.
After the competition is done, players from both sides don jacket and tie and sit down to enjoy a meal and good company. All seniors can play in any club competition, though the section is very strong in its own right, with a turn-out of 60 or so not unusual for Seniors’ day, which is Wednesday. Less formal golf takes place on Mondays and Fridays.
Every week there is a specific competition and trophies are contested throughout the year as well.
The Memorial Trophy is one of the most poignant events of the year. It is played at the end of the season in honour of WAGS longer with us and widows of former members are invited to come and join the current group for lunch after the competition.

Juniors The Junior Section at Waldringfield Golf Club has steadily grown over the last four years, with membership reaching 37 juniors at its peak. However, with many of our existing juniors now reaching adult status, and a lack of new junior members to replenish them, we have decided to restructure our junior membership and introduce a new cadet grade, in an attempt to attract, and most importantly sustain, a thriving junior members’ section for the future. Waldringfield identifies this section as paramount for the future of the club, if we are to progress in our status and standing in county events in the years to come. We are therefore reducing the fees for juniors aged 17 and under to a nominal fee which
will solely cover golf union fees and administration. Furthermore, for the first time we are going to introduce a new Cadet Membership for young adults from 18 to 21 years old (age on 1st January in renewal year). This new annual subscription rate will be available at a very advantageous rate, with an additional discount available to WGC juniors progressing to Cadet status. Under the guidance of our Junior Organiser, Stephen Creasey, junior competitions have been held regularly with steady participation. We are looking to grow and improve these competitions and now have an attractive cabinet of trophies to play for.
In addition all junior members have full playing rights and can participate in all club competitions, which is not always available at other clubs. With the inclusion of an excellent Junior Open, the infrastructure is now in place for Waldringfield’s Junior Section to assume a position of strength and maintain that position in the future. Golf Societies For golfing societies we have a variety of golf and menu packages available. Options range from the number of holes to be played, to different catering requirements on the day, including coffee on arrival, breakfast, lunch and a full evening meal. Basic packages rates can be found on our website and vary according to the season.
Typical packages include coffee on arrival, with an optional bacon roll and 18, 27 or 36 holes of golf followed by a one-course or two-course meal. Clubhouse and Restaurant The clubhouse offers great comfort and a welcoming atmosphere in which to socialise and relax either after a round of golf or as members of the club. The Club enjoys two bars – the recently extended Carl Giles Bar is named after the well-known Daily Express cartoonist who was a frequent visitor to the Club. Meanwhile, the larger Bobby Robson Bar was named after Suffolk’s famous sporting son who was a life member here at Waldringfield. Both bars are well stocked with a wide selection of beers, wines, and spirits and a choice of non-alco-
holic alternatives. An extensive selection of bar meals are available daily from 10am to 3pm (8am to 4pm Saturday), including light snacks and hearty meals, as well as our Chef’s Specials which can feature from anything from a roast dinner to sausage and mash to fish dishes. . All meals are fully prepared on site (with the exception of some desserts which are specially made for us by “The Dessert Company”, Cambridge), with fresh produce from local suppliers.
There is a very pleasant conservatory at the front of the clubhouse, which is airconditioned and offers nice views of the course, while on warmer days, sitting outside with a refreshing drink takes some beating.

Funeral Wakes There is nothing more painful than losing a loved one, but here at Waldringfield Golf Club we aim to ease the burden and take care of one aspect of the grieving process at what we appreciate is a very difficult time. Whether a large joyous send-off for all to reminisce and celebrate, or a small private peaceful remembrance for close family and friends, we have the facilities for you. This is a fantastic way to explore the River Deben, whether for a special occasion, group party or company outing. The members are renowned for their friendliness and if not trying to break par like nothing better than to spend an evening in each other’s company. The club has an active social calendar throughout the year, the highlight of which is the summer ball, a hugely popular event with members that is always oversubscribed.

How to Find & Contact Us Waldringfield Golf Club is four miles south of the town of Woodbridge in Suffolk and eight miles east of the county town of Ipswich. For satellite navigation purposes our postcode is IP12 4PT. Directions From Ipswich Take the Foxhall Road (B1075) eastbound out of the town for just over four miles. Carry straight on over the roundabout which intersects with the A12 on to Newbourne Road. Bear left on to Ipswich Road and after about a mile turn left onto Newbourne Road again. The entrance to the club is on the right.

From the A12 Take the A12 through Woodbridge. At the southern edge of the town, take the first exit onto the B1438 Ipswich Road and then immediately take the second exit at the next roundabout on to Top Street. After about half a mile turn on to School Lane, which becomes Waldringfield Road and then Newbourne Road. You will come to the golf club on your left after about a mile and a half. Public transport The nearest railway station is Woodbridge, which is just under four miles, or a tenminute taxi ride away. The better option, though, is Ipswich, which is slightly further away but offers a more regular service, with several trains an hour to London Liverpool Street, which is just over an hour away via the fastest service.
