Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy
Welcome Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour are widely recognised as some of the best sailing waters on the planet. This, together with the development of the new purpose-built, on-shore facilities, have resulted in the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) being selected as part of the venue for the sailing competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. Leading sailors from around the world will discover what those closer to home have long been aware of: the combination of clean winds, sheltered waters and weak tides in the area is unique and provides an unrivalled location for thrilling sporting competition. Spectators, meanwhile, will marvel at the spectacular backdrop to the action, with our modern world-class facility set in the centre of the Jurassic Coast, the only natural World Heritage Site on the UK mainland. WPNSA primarily offers its superb venue for events and training, but also operates a successful sailing school, windsurfing school and a large members’ community catering for all abilities from complete beginners to Olympians.
Our magnificent venue lends itself perfectly as an outstanding choice of venue for functions, business meetings, weddings and conferences. First and foremost, though, we are a place for sailors run by people with a passion for sailing. Our commitment to young sailors is absolute and through an associated charity called the Chesil Trust, we have introduced thousands of local children to the sport with the ‘Sail for a Fiver’ scheme. WPNSA has a commitment to stewardship of the environment and in striving to play our part in making our industry more sustainable the Academy has won several prestigious awards. Whether you wish to run a major championship event, try sailing for the first time or simply enjoy sailing for the fantastic and fun sport that it is, we think you will find our services unbeatable.
The Games will not be a one-off, but a springboard to ensure there is a continuing and lasting legacy in Dorset and the United Kingdom. The Academy has hosted conferences with business leaders and senior figures from the sailing world aimed at ensuring we remain a key destination on the sailing map far into the future. Our purpose is to effectively promote the sport of sailing to all levels of competence and ability, through courses, training and national as well as international events, whilst supporting and working closely with the local community. Facilities on-shore include a licensed function room, conference/meeting rooms, various slipways, a 16-tonne boat hoist, extensive dinghy parks, three permanent cranes and storage for all types of boats. Development and History From the earliest days of sailing ships, experienced sailors have known of the particular qualities of the local sailing waters. Henry VIII recognised the importance of the area and built two castles to protect the area. The Royal Yachting Association had been trying for decades to secure a suitable site locally to make the most of these natural advantages, but the opportunity came when in 1999 it was announced that the Royal Naval Air Station at Portland was to be closed. A group of local people established a not-for-profit company to take the vision of a National centre of excellence for the sport of sailing forward and with the support of the Royal Navy, the Royal Yachting Association, the South West Regional Development Agency, Sport England and all the local authorities in the area, this idea started to take shape. The Academy started sailing operations on the site in March, 2000. After initially operating from the disused military buildings and facilities, in 2003 the Academy was in a position to start construction work on redeveloping the site. At the same time the London bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games was gathering momentum and the Academy was selected as part of the sailing venue in the bid to the International Olympic Committee. Construction works were completed in the Spring of 2003 and HRH The Princess Royal formally opened the new Academy buildings on 9th June, 2005. Less than a month later London was selected as the venue for the 30th Olympiad. This impressive facility had therefore moved from starting sailing operations on the site to being part of an Olympic venue in slightly more than five years. Once the decision had been made to award the 2012 Games to London, plans were put in place to further enhance the facilities to bring them up to the standard required by the IOC. The Olympic Delivery Authority then funded further marine works to meet these standards. These works, consisting of additional reclamation of the harbour, new slipways, construction of a breakwater and pontoons were finished in 2008, on time and on budget, making the Academy the first of the 2012 venues to be completed. 6
The Academy also provided training facilities for the GBR team in the run up to the 2008 Games, where an impressive haul of four golds, one silver and one bronze medal was achieved. Development of the Academy has provided first class facilities including 220 metres of slipway accessible at all states of wind and tide as well as 600 dinghy spaces and 125 protected marina berths for ribs and yachts. The combination of clean winds, sheltered waters and small tidal range in the area is unique. World-class facilities set in the centre of the Jurassic Coast, the only natural World Heritage Site on the UK mainland, provide an unrivalled venue for training and sailing competitions. WPNSA is also committed to promoting the sustainable legacy of the Games through social and environmental programmes.

foreword Wow! Here we are in 2012. This year the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy will be part of the venue for the sailing competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. It seems only yesterday that the decision was made that London would be the venue for the 30th Olympiad, but a great deal has been going on at the Academy in the intervening period to ensure that the venue is brought up to the ‘World-Class’ standards necessary for this event. We continue to develop and improve the Academy – we are delighted to be hosting a new base for Sunsail this year and they will be introducing a very exciting racing and training programme. This will further extend the range of experience and activity at the venue. We are also unveiling an extended balcony this year, which will provide better opportunities for that vital coffee or drink with the fantastic views over the Harbour.
Our existing on site partners continue to offer excellent facilities to suit all maritime interests, be they dinghy sailing or tuition, windsurfer sailing or other forms of watersports. So whether your interest is in corporate activity, competitive sailing or just a bit of ‘messing about in boats’ we are confident we can provide exciting experiences for all, respective of experience or ability. 2012 will be a ‘Summer like no other’, so be part of it – come aboard and make the most of these fantastic facilities, which are not just for the Games, they are for everyone! Because of the security requirements of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, there will be a period during the year when Members will not be able to gain access or store their boats at the Academy. We have tried to minimise the disruption that will be caused to members and we have made arrangements for an alternative storage area for craft elsewhere on Osprey Quay. We recognise, however, that the normal rights of members will be affected during this period and, for members renewing by 31st March, there will be a discount available on the normal membership fee to reflect this.

Sailing Events and Training Annually the Academy hosts local, national, European and World dinghy and windsurfing events. The venue is capable of hosting more than 1,000 competitors at a time racing across a number of different disciplines.
facility and deep water race course in easy access of Portland Harbour out to Weymouth Bay. The new development works include a mini marina with a total capacity for 125 boats.
The 2011 season was another active and successful one for the Academy, kicking off with UK Windsurfing Association’s National Championships at the end of March. Over this same weekend the waters of Weymouth and Portland were crowded with the much loved Sigma 38 yacht racing class, as crews of nine competed for their national title.
In June, Sail for Gold returned to the 2012 sailing venue with 62 nations being represented. This was the 6th leg of the International Sailing Federation World Cup and was the largest event ever held at the Academy
The J109 yacht racing fraternity, now renowned internationally for big fleet racing, then headed to the Academy for their annual National Championship Event at the end of May. The Academy is fast becoming the international yacht racing destination of choice due to the re-developed marina
The award-winning disabled facilities at the Academy were put to excellent use when the International Federation for Disabled Sailing (IFDS) held their World Cup with us at the start of July. This is the most prestigious annual event in the disabled sailing calendar and perfect preparation for WPNSA being part of the venue for the Paralympic Games in 2012. July also saw the Contender World Championships. Dubbed as the world’s most popular single-handed trapeze sailing dinghy, this class is steeped in history and routinely generates a following of hundreds. Britain won six medals in the ten events held at the test event at the beginning of August, the perfect tonic ahead of the real thing when the Olympics comes to Weymouth and Portland in July 2012. The serious racing continued in the latter half of August with the RS Games. 525 boats and 879 competitors made the RS Games one of the biggest dinghy racing events of the 2011 calendar and a huge festival of all that’s good about dinghy racing. The regatta included nine of the RS classes competing for their UK National Championships and the RS500 for their world title as well. Records fell with the RS200 producing the biggest Nationals for a two-man boat this century. September was no less memorable with the Laser National Championships followed by the International 14 World Championships. Incredibly, this skiffstyle of boat dates back to the late 1800s but is constantly re-vamped to thrill the latest racing generation.

Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy
The highlight of this (or any other) year for the WPNSA is obviously being part of the venue for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. But there is a whole host of other events taking place (see the events calendar later in this brochure) and we will also be the start and finish point of Round Britain 2012 in June. Dubbed Britain’s biggest multi-faceted land, sea and air event - RB12 is predicted to involve 75 powerboats, 100 super and vintage cars, as well as 50 aircraft with more than 1,000 contestants and 1,500 supporting crew. The Sailing Academy is a very popular base for training and coaching at all levels. Fully-equipped lecture rooms, safety ribs and marks are available for hire, supported by excellent catering facilities. The British Olympic Sailing Team regularly train at WPNSA, and many have become members intending to make it the base for the majority of their sailing programme.
The Artemis Offshore Academy uses the world-class facilities at the WPNSA as one of the venues for the UK excellence training programme. The Academy will be working closely with the Artemis Offshore Academy supporting a UK training programme of excellence for British short-handed sailors, providing a structure to bring talented sailors up through the ranks. The centre has also taken the step of inviting foreign Olympic teams to train at the site and contracts have been signed with several teams including Italy, USA, Canada and Australia. For event bookings and training please contact reception@wpnsa.org.uk or telephone 01305 866000.

They work closely with charities, schools, and governing bodies to drive participation within the sport. SailLaser offers a comprehensive range of RYA-approved courses with options for all ages and abilities. Courses are taught by a highly qualified team of instructors and coaches and conducted in brand new kit from the brand leaders LaserPerformance. All boats are up to date and renewed on an annual basis. Powerboat training, instructor training, corporate days and dinghy hire are also available through SailLaser. As well as introducing people to the sport of sailing, SailLaser is committed to supporting regular participation, particularly for the local community that surrounds the Academy. Many schools visit both in and out of curriculum time to gain certification and compete in regattas. They have weekly clubs for both children and adults, allowing people to enjoy the water at minimal cost. If you want to come as a family, there is the option to learn together, or separately, so your children can enjoy the learning experience with their peers while you learn along with other adults, with all members being rewarded with an accredited certificate upon completion of your course. For those keen on racing, video analysis can be provided with an experienced instructor on hand to point out tips to help you increase speed on the water and thereby improve your results. Learning to Windsurf The OTC Windsurfing School
The Official Test Centre (OTC) is a purpose-built centre with the clear goal to showcase the modern sport of windsurfing, and provide access to windsurfing for everyone. Housing all the major windsurfing brands under one roof, the concept of the centre is to enable its clients to test and compare the latest designs for themselves in favourable conditions. With more disciplines and brands appearing every year, the range of boards and sails available on the market has become overwhelming for many, making the decision on which board or sail to buy very complicated and confusing. Tests and reviews of windsurf kit go a long way to clarifying the situation, but ultimately there is no substitute for trying the equipment for yourself. You can test-drive a car before you decide to invest; you try clothes on to check they fit...you even smell a perfume or aftershave to see if it suits. Well now, at long last, the same opportunity to ‘try before you buy’ is available for windsurfers. With its affiliated RYA-accredited windsurfing school (The Osprey Training Centre) OTC can also teach windsurfing at every level, from the complete beginner to those wishing to hone their advanced techniques. The centre puts windsurfing firmly on the map on one of the prominent stages in the marine leisure industry today. There are eight different board categories available for use at OTC UK. These are: 85L Crossover, 95L Crossover, 100L Freestyle, 100L Slalom, 105L Crossover, 115L Freeride, 125L Freeride and 145L Freeride. If you get the windsurfing bug, consider taking part in the Harbour Dash, a fantastic windsurfing event held in October that has been running annually in Weymouth for more than 30 years. It was founded in memory of Brian Matthews, a popular local windsurfer who took up the sport in his fifties. Brian died in January 1986, the day after his 60th birthday. 2011 was a special year for this event, with three entrants smashing the course record set back in 1994. The new record for the race from Overcombe to Portland Harbour is held by Nick Dempsey at 16 minutes and 40 seconds.
For more information about windsurfing please contact info@otc-windsurf.com or telephone 0121 288 9965 or visit their website, uk.otc-windsurf.com.

Events and Training Centre The Sailing Academy is fortunate to have a wide range of facilities which give visiting events and training classes an array of room sizes to choose from. These range from private classrooms that can cater from between 12 to 30 people through to the large events hall which can be used for larger briefings, physical testing or equipment scrutineering. The events hall has a capacity of up to 350 people seated banquet style and 450 buffet style. It also includes a large bar and catering facilities. This flexible space has been used previously for other wide-ranging events such as BMX displays, charity balls and promotional boxing exhibitions, with an impressive ceiling canopy available to allow the room to be transformed for special occasions and create just the right atmosphere. If you have got an event or function and are keen to impress your clients, delegates or guests and make the right impression, the Sailing Academy should be placed at the top of your list of potential venues. WPNSA is always looking for ways to make best use of its superb facilities while promoting and supporting the local community and one such example is the Wedding Fair we are hosting on 8th April 2012 between 11am-4pm. Incorporating many companies from the local area, it includes a live catwalk show at midday and 2pm, a dance show and interactive workshops. There will also be a dedicated ‘Men’s Zone’, a creche to make the day even more enjoyable, and one lucky couple could win a wedding! Another event being planned is a ‘Winter Wonderland’ in December. We would be delighted to give you a your of the facilities, please call us to arrange a visit or for further information.

Disabled Sailing The academy has been developed with access for all in mind. Whilst being the training base of choice for the Team GBR Paralympic squad the same facilities are open to all disabled sailors. The site and building is fully accessible to wheelchair users with a lift at either end of the building All changing facilities are fully accessible whilst a special needs changing area caters for those needing additional assistance
“I love training in Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour as they offer a wide range of sailing conditions. The Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy is an unbeatable venue for disabled sailors with new, purpose built, facilities. For example, there are disabled access hoists on the pontoons, providing the safest access to tidal waters for people with disabilities anywhere in the UK. I don’t know of any other sailing venue where the needs of sailors of all abilities are so well catered for.”
All signage around the building is tactile and subtitled in Braille and there is a portable induction loop for use within the building

Infrastructure for Major Events Weymouth and Portland is now the natural venue of choice for major marine events. In addition to the quality of the waters for competition, there has been an enormous investment in sailing and transport infrastructure that sets WPNSA apart. The Academy has 125 pontoon berths available for events and we have the opportunity to spill over into the newly-constructed Portland Marina if this is required.
For the smaller keelboats, the Academy has three cranes between 2.5 tonnes and 4 tonnes capacity, so large fleets of small keelboats can be sailed on a daily dry sailing basis. The Academy provides world class race management, so whatever the nature or size of your event we are able to provide ready-made, tried and tested solutions.
In addition to the pontoon facilities there are deep water slipways for launching of RIBs and support boats and three boat hoists available locally ranging from 16 tonnes to 320 tonnes capacity.

Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Olympic Sailing
29th July-11th August – Olympic Games The waters of Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour will play host to 10 exhilarating Sailing events during the London 2012 Olympic Games. At London 2012, the different Olympic Sailing events for men and women will feature a variety of craft, from dinghies and keelboats to windsurfing boards. Each event consists of a series of races. Points in each race are awarded according to position, the winner receiving 1 point, the secondplaced finisher 2 points, and so on. Following a series of races, just those in the top ten places then compete in the medal race – for which the points are doubled. Led by triple gold medal-winner Ben Ainslie CBE, Team GB has topped the Sailing medals table at the last three Olympic Games. British Sailors will be hoping to repeat the feat at London 2012, battling their rivals in Weymouth Bay.
Paralympic Sailing
1st-6th September – Paralympic Games A total of 80 athletes will be sailing for gold in the waters of Weymouth. At the Paralympic Games, athletes compete in three mixed events: the SinglePerson, Two-Person and Three-Person Keelboat competitions. The design of the keelboats used in Paralympic competition provides greater stability, and the boats have open cockpits to allow more room for the sailors. Classification is used to level the playing field where there are a variety of disability levels.

Olympic Sailing Classes
49er
Class of boat: dinghy Crew number: 2 Raced by: mixed crew The 49er is the fastest two person one-design monohull dinghy and the only sailing class in the 2012 Games where the crew does not have to be the same sex. Both crew members are tethered to the boat by means of a wire, known as a trapeze. The helm steers the boat and generally makes the tactical decisions, while the second crew member is responsible for controlling the sail. Great Britain won silver when the 49er made its Olympic debut at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and repeated the achievement four years later. 32
Finn
Class of boat: dinghy Crew number: 1 Raced by: men This class was made famous first by Iain Percy, who won gold for Great Britain at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and latterly by WPNSA’s own Ben Ainslie, who is looking for a third successive gold medal in this class having won the event in Athens in 2004 and again in Qingdao four years ago. A single-handed, cat-rigged dinghy, it has been in every Summer Olympics since first being raced in 1952 when Charles Currey won silver for Britain in Helsinki.
470
Class of boat: dinghy Crew number: 2 Raced by: men and women The 470 (Four-Seventy) gets its name from the fact that it is 470 centimetres in length. It has been an Olympic class since the 1976 Games in Canada. Originally an open class, there have been separate events for men and women since 1988. Great Britain has won three silver medals in this discipline, by John Merricks and Ian Walker in 1996 and by Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield in 2004 and 2008. Good teamwork is essential for success in the 470, which is equipped with spinnaker and a trapeze, which is a wire connected from the mast to one of the sailors.
Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy
Laser
Class of boat: dinghy Crew number: 1 Raced by: men A very popular one-design class of sailing dinghy, manufactured by Laser Performance, which is enjoyed by more than 250,000 sailors worldwide. Tight restrictions on design makes for very competitive racing. Lasers only have a mainsail and require sailors to be very fit and agile. Ben Ainslie won the gold in this class for Great Britain at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, having won silver at the Atlanta Games four years previously. Paul Goodison maintained those impeccable standards by also winning gold at the 2008 Games.
Laser Radial
Class of boat: dinghy Crew number: 1 Raced by: women The Laser Radial returns for its second Olympic Games having first been raced in the 2008 Games in Qingdao, China. A one-design class of small sailing dinghy, this popular single-handed boat has a shorter mast and reduced sail area, allowing light sailors to sail in heavy winds and thereby making it more suitable than the standard Laser class for racing by women sailors.
Elliott 6M
Class of boat: keelboat Crew number: 3 Raced by: women The Elliott 6m is making its bow at the summer Olympics, having replaced the Yngling class in which Britain won gold at the last two Games, first with Shirley Robertson, Sarah Webb and Sarah Ayton in Athens in 2004 and then with Webb, Ayton and Pippa Wilson four years ago. The Elliott 6m carries a spinnaker pole and symmetric spinnaker which is considered more suitable for match racing, where competitors race against an opponent rather than against the rest of the fleet.
Star
Class of boat: keelboat Crew number: 2 Raced by: men The Star is making its farewell appearance having not been picked as one of the craft for the 2016 Games. A mixed event until 2000, it became an event for men only from 2004 when women raced instead in their own Yngling class. Great Britain has an excellent recent pedigree in this event, having won gold twice, through Michael McIntyre and Bryn Vaile in 1988 and Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson in 2008. A Star has its mast towards the front of the boat, a very large mainsail and a jib, a triangular staysail set ahead of the foremast.
Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy
RS:X
Class: windsurfing/sailboard Raced by: men and women The RS:X replaced the Mistral One design class as the sailboard of choice at the 2008 Summer Olympics. While the board is always the same size - 286 cm in length and 93 cm in width – it is rigged differently for men and women with the men employing a slightly taller mast (17ft compared to 16ft) and a larger mainsail. Bryony Shaw claimed a bronze medal for Great Britain at the 2008 Olympic Games, while Nick Dempsey also took bronze in the Mistral One class in 2004. Both will be representing Team GBR again in their home Olympics. 33
Paralympic Sailing Classes
2.4 One-person
Class of boat: Keelboat Crew number: 1 Raced by: men and women The 2.4 Metre, which originated in Stockholm in 1983, is an ideal craft for disabled sailors. In the 2.4mR, the helmsperson sits down into the boat facing forward with all the trim controls within arms’ reach. Because the crew weight is always close to its centre of gravity, the 2.4mR is insensitive to differences in the size of the helmsperson. Instead, 2.4mR racing focuses on sophisticated sail trim, tactics and strategy.
34
SKUD 18 Double-handed
Class of boat: Keelboat Crew number: 3 Raced by: men and women Paralympic sailing continues to grow with the introduction of a new strictly one-design class, the SKUD-18, which made its first Paralympic appearance at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing. Sailed by two disabled crew, with at least one female on board, the SKUD-18 is designed with the 49er skiff in mind. The SKUD-18 boat was an exciting addition to Paralympic competiton having made its European regatta debut at the 2006 Skandia Sail for Gold regatta.
Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy
SONAR Three-person
Class of boat: Keelboat Crew number: 3 Raced by: men and women Designed in the 1980s by American Bruce Kirby, and sailed in the Paralympics since 2000, the Sonar has become a top choice for Paralympic racing. The keelboat’s crew-friendly configuration allows disabled sailors to sail efficiently and safely and enjoy a high level of performance. The racer has a well contoured sit-in cockpit and when the wind gets up and sailors are sitting on the side deck. Sailors face into the boat and whether up on the deck or sitting down on the seats, the sailor’s backside is always higher than their feet. In competition, the Sonar is sailed by three people with a fourth crew member available in case one sailor is unable to take part in the race.
Olympic and Paralympic Sailing programme Olympic Sailing timetable

Sail for Gold The Sail for Gold programme encourages clubs and centres to celebrate and capture the excitement of London 2012 by holding activities and events at their venue in the build up to the Games. The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) provides dates and resources to help make this happen and is seeking to inspire new and existing sailors to get out on the water, make clubs the focal point for members to join in the spirit of the Olympics, and show the nation’s support for the world’s most successful Olympic Sailing team; the British sailing team.
The Dorset Cultural Olympiad
The RYA’s major Sail for Gold event for 2012 is ‘Push the Boat Out’ day on Saturday 21st July, where everyone on a boat is being encouraged to take to the water.
Further information
While clubs around the UK’s waters will be doing their bit to promote the Olympic spirit, Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy will be the focus of attention for the sailing community with a major event taking place before the Games themselves arrive.

They represent an opportunity for local communities and businesses to get involved, celebrate and participate in non-sporting events linked to the London 2012 Games. The Cultural Olympiad will be made up of a series of independent events including Quest, B-Side, Inside Out, Nowhere Island and the Jurassic Coast Earth Festival.

Portland Harbour Sailing Guide Portland Harbour and Weymouth Bay are the main areas used for sailing. The harbour covers an area of 8.6 square kilometres (2,125 acres), and is ideal for sailing as it is exposed to reliable winds from most directions, but is sheltered from large waves and currents by Chesil Beach and the breakwaters. Race Area For 2012, it is the intention to have four courses in Weymouth Bay - one in Newton’s Cove, two along the northern shore of the bay and one - the most tidal - towards the southern side of the bay. Courses, most likely for the RS:X windsurfers and 49ers, will also be used inside the harbour walls. Because of this flexibility in the courses, there are options to move races around in the event of bad and difficult weather. Sea State and Tide The location is dominated by the long, arching shingle crescent of Chesil Beach of the Jurassic Coast, which stretches from West Bay in the northwest to Portland in the south. The beach is only 200m at its widest and rises to about 11m above sea level. On the seaward side it shelves steeply away for 300m until it levels off to a depth of about 18m. At the tip of the Beach, Portland Bill juts out, where a tidal stream runs very strong and eddies of great extent form in the bays on each side of the peninsula. The streams run south for the majority of the time and there can be violent turbulence off the Bill, where these currents meet the east and west-going coastal ones. Portland Harbour has a lot of things in its favour. It is sheltered from the predominant south-westerly winds by Chesil Beach; added breakwaters give protection from the south-easterlies. These features also stand as barriers against strong winds, large waves and currents. Together with the strong limestone of the Isle of Portland, they affect tides in Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour, where the maximum tidal range is small, less than 2.5m at springs and less than 1m at neaps. 44
Tidal streams in Portland Harbour are irregular; the spring tide rate is approximately one knot and extends for only a short distance into and out of the harbour. But there are eddies off the heads of the breakwaters. Inside the harbour, tidal streams are imperceptible. Inside Portland Harbour because the prevailing south-westerly wind comes over Chesil Beach, the water inside the harbour is offered some protection and tends to be quite flat. There is also the option to take racing outside Portland Harbour and into Weymouth Bay, though there is tide across this stretch of water. The strong feature of Weymouth and Portland is that it has ‘clean winds’. The prevailing south-westerly and westerly winds blowing across Chesil Beach give a limited ‘fetch’. Weymouth Bay is a relatively sheltered basin with clean winds and small waves. This means that sailing conditions for the venue are almost neutral, so that local knowledge is of no great importance.

Live Event Tracking Event organisers at Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy now have the option to access pay-as-you-go tracking infrastructure which will make the on-the-water action more accessible and more attractive to sailors, clubs, spectators, coaches and sponsors. The technology can be put in place to be used by major events, training days, small weekday events, youth activities or fun races. This exciting development has come about after the Academy signed a collaboration agreement to work closely with TracTrac, the leaders in live sports tracking. TracTrac already tracks the excitement and action at most major sailing events, recently working closely with 2011 Skandia Sail for Gold to deliver a fantastic tracking experience both on the web and at venue via a 25-foot big screen. In addition to the WPNSA race management services on offer for race events on the site, this technology will now be available at an affordable rate within a fully-managed operation. TracTrac live tracking will present a number of benefits for event organisers using WPNSA facilities. Participants and coaches will be able to analyse and replay the race, compare themselves against their competitors and visualise key moments of the race. TracTrac can assist race organisers in course setting, improve safety, support jury decisions and display results. And on top of all this spectators can live the excitement, understand the competition and feel close to the action.

Legacy at WPNSA – The Chesil Trust Programme The Chesil Trust is an independent registered charity which enables children and young people with disabilities, and those experiencing disadvantages or social exclusion to develop practical and leadership skills through the delivery of subsidised sailing training courses, ranging from introductory days through to qualification courses. These courses are delivered through schools and other organisations. Over the last six years, The Chesil Trust has helped almost nine thousand children and young people to participate in the initial ‘Sail for £5’ introductory course, many of whom went on to further develop their skills in the certificated RYA Level 1 & 2 continuation courses. By providing access to training facilities for sailing and seamanship, The Chesil Trust works with young people including those at risk of involvement in drugs, alcohol, crime or exclusion from school, offering them new skills in teamwork and leadership, diverting them to a more constructive life and employment paths. The Trust works with Dorset’s schools to identify children and young people who would benefit from this form of training. Many are at risk of exclusion from traditional career paths because of physical disability or low educational achievement. The Chesil Trust is also working with underprivileged children from East London schools and are also welcoming children with disabilities from across the nation. Children taking part in the ‘Sail for £5’ Chesil Trust Programme have the opportunity to try sailing in the same location where Team GB train and where the four GB gold medallists trained prior to Beijing 2008. Legends such as Ben Ainslie, Sarah Dempsey and Iain Percy have all trained at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy and understand the importance of inspiring new generations into the sport of sailing. “The legacy programme is a key element to Weymouth & Portland National 54
Sailing Academy’s philosophy,” Ben Ainslie, also a WPNSA Director, said. “We are committed to helping less privileged Dorset children try water sports at the venue and continue to support them through to racing events. A Sail for a Fiver child today may be a medal winner by 2016 and it is our job to ensure this opportunity is given to the young people and people with disabilities’. For the youngsters who show talent there is also ongoing support from the Chesil Trust through a talent development scheme. Taking a child to a different dinghy regatta every weekend can be costly so the scheme is essential, so far it is has helped seven individuals who have gone on to win three Youth World Championships. The Trust relies entirely on voluntary contributions for its funding. Green Credentials WPNSA has a commitment to stewardship of the environment and has been described by Natural England as ‘an example of best practice’. We have achieved the Sustainable Event Certification (BS 8901), a management system standard designed to help organisations in the events industry improve the sustainability of their event-related activities, products and services. The award-winning building was designed to be energy efficient and has the largest photovoltaic array for the generation of solar energy yet installed in South Dorset. Working with SSE Energy, the extended photovoltaic installation now generates 20 per cent of the electricity requirement.
The venue, in conjunction with SSE won the 2008 Sport Industry Award for ‘Environmental Concern in Sport’. In 2009 the WPNSA won the International Olympic Committee recognised architectural award ‘the IPC/IAKS Distinction for Accessibility’ for excellent disabled access. We also won an acclaimed Environmental Award from Britain’s best-selling yachting magazine in 2011. The Practical Boat Owner Green Awards selected WPNSA as winner of the ‘Marine Service and Support’ award. The PBO Awards recognise marine businesses that have taken steps to reduce the environmental impact of leisure boating and thereby make the industry more sustainable.
‘Power Perfector’ technology is fitted, reducing power consumption by a further 10 per cent. The green Power Perfector technology was introduced to the UK market in 2001 and works by improving grid-supplied power quality and adjusting voltage to optimum levels for equipment on site so it works more efficiently and wastes less energy. In addition to this, there is also the recovery of ‘grey water’ from the roof which is used for boat washing in substitution for mains water and an active recycling programme in place recently extended to recycling old sails and batteries as well as the installation of motion-sensitive lights throughout the complex. Marine litter is also taken seriously, last year a Marine Litter Summit in conjunction with the Dorset Coast Forum was hosted on site to highlight the issue and enforce strict policies at the site. In April 2011, the Academy also hosted a conference promoting clean and sustainable seas and oceans with a number of very prominent national and international figures.

Testimonials “I just wanted to say a big thank you for all your support and help over the last weekend. All the feedback we’ve received has been hugely positive, much of which has stemmed from the fact that we were using a great venue, and you provided such a warm welcome. I’ve passed on to the team who will be looking after the regional Selection Event that they’re going to have a ball down in Weymouth & Portland!” Andrew Newman, London 2012
“We could not have asked for more of the venue or the staff. We just hope that we can replicate this event in all of the other regions we are visiting to the same kind of standard. This certainly set the bar high and with the help and support of your team made the whole day a complete success!” Rebecca Carr, London 2012
“I couldn’t have hoped for a better forum in which to discuss the Government’s aspirations for the tourism industry, or for a more fitting arena in which to focus on the excitement and potential which the 2012 Games offer to Dorset, and indeed the whole of the UK. John Penrose and I were both extremely impressed with the state-of-the-art facilities at the Academy and with the smooth and professional running of proceedings. Please convey my thanks to all of your staff who contributed. The tour of the venue sites you provided really helped to bring to life the scale of the operation being undertaken locally in preparation for the Games and the true enthusiasm and energy being poured into the project by a huge number of people from across the region.” Jeremy Hunt MP Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media & Sport
“In my mind, Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour are the finest sailing areas in the UK. With the development of the new purpose-built, on-shore facilities at the Academy, it’s in an unbeatable place to train, whatever your level.” Sarah Dempsey, double Olympic Gold Medallist
“Very able, willing and friendly staff. Excellent race management and a good set of volunteers.” Heather Chipperfield, RS Class Association
“I just wanted to thank you, the Academy and in particular the Race Officer for yet another superb event this weekend. Organisation, both on and off the water, was first class, and the little touches were much appreciated.” Mike Ball, Solo Association
“We’ve had an absolutely FANTASTIC weekend at WPNSA/SailLaser Weymouth. Our customers/competitors have had a brilliant weekend and I think it’s true to say that everybody left with a smile on their face yesterday afternoon.” Katie Ashworth, the then Marketing Manager, LaserPerformance Europe Ltd
“My huge thanks to you both for facilitating and running an excellent Burton Event for the National 12 Class over the Bank Holiday weekend. Feedback from all those who participated has been unanimously positive as was clearly evident at the final prize-giving on Tuesday afternoon.” Tim Gatti, National 12 Class Chairman.
