Welcome
Yelverton Golf Club, located on the western edge of Dartmoor, offers a spectacular golfing challenge suitable for all skill levels. Ours is a delightful moorland course, designed by Herbert Fowler, who used the old mine working as natural hazards to challenge players of all standards. It has outstanding views across Dartmoor and over Cornwall and is a very natural course, with Dartmoor ponies and cattle sharing the fairways. Playable all year, with temporary greens rarely being used, Yelverton has been host to many top quality competitions, including the Men’s Senior Amateur Championships in 2006. We are a popular destination for visitors and golfing societies, many of whom return to our club year after year, drawn equally by the course, the hospitality and the warmth of the welcome they receive.
If you are visiting us for the first time, enjoy a drink, a tasty meal and a chat with our friendly members in our wellappointed clubhouse and think about all the benefits of being a member here. Our members enjoy much competitive and social golf and we are also able to offer them reciprocal golf at courses across six counties. With tuition available from two excellent PGA Professionals and outstanding practice facilities, we believe we offer the complete golfing package. For a round of golf in Devon, there’s nowhere better than Yelverton.

A Brief History of Yelverton Golf Club
1904 Club formed, playing on a 9-hole course extending south-west from the present clubhouse. 1910/11 A further 9 holes are constructed, the ‘Higher Down Course’, still to the west of Golf Links Road. An inaugural match was played between J H Taylor and Harry Vardon, with local Professionals Braund and Bickle. Taylor and Vardon were half of the dominant force in world golf at the time known as the Triumvirate, winning ten major championships between them. Taylor was born in Northam and started his career as a caddie at Royal North Devon. 1915 Half of the course reverts to agricultural use, in aid of the War effort. 1919 Agreement signed with The Maristowe Estate and the Roborough Commoners Association for a course on Roborough Down. Herbert Fowler, designer of Walton Heath and many other courses, is commissioned to design the course – essentially the course in play now. 1925 New clubhouse opened, the one currently in use. 1939-45 World War II; half of course closed for duration. 1949 Fowler’s 8th, 9th and 10th holes are abandoned, and the present 16th, 17th and 18th holes are introduced. 1994 Major refurbishment of clubhouse undertaken. Y e l v e r 2001 Foot and Mouth epidemic closes the course for 10 weeks. 2004 Club celebrates its Centenary with competitions in June, and Dinner and Dance on 4th December. 2006 Club hosts the English Golf Union Seniors Amateur Championships.

The Course
When the club was founded in 1904 it began as a nine-hole course to the west of the clubhouse. This was upgraded to 18 holes in 1912. The current layout came into play between the wars. Designed by Herbert Fowler, today’s course retains 15 of the original holes, with the 16th, 17th and 18th as more recent additions. The course stretches to 6,353 yards, par 71, from the white championship tees. From the yellow tees it measures 6,106 yards, with the 11th played as a par four instead of a par five, bringing the par down to 70. While the par is 73 for the ladies, the layout represents a challenging 5,605 yards.
Anyone who has ever played at Yelverton will tell you that it is a fair test. True, there are some tough holes, such as the uphill par-4 7th, but there are also some birdie opportunities too. The final five-hole loop rewards the accurate and punishes the wayward, ensuring an exciting finish to any matchplay round. Got your eyes set on lowering the course record? Think again! Downes Crediton Golf Club pro Barry Austin shot a remarkable 60 at our Pro-Am in 2002 on a day of perfect conditions. His remarkable scorecard, featuring eagles on the 11th and the par-4 14th, eight birdies and a lone dropped shot on the 12th, can be viewed on our website.

Take the Course Tour
If you have never played Yelverton before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our course tour courtesy of Tim McSherry, our PGA Professional. Hole 1, 207 yards, par 3 Just like Royal Lytham, the round starts off with a challenging par three of over 200 yards. The first tee shot is never easy, but here you have to hit a small target with what can often be a wood! A four isn’t a bad score to start, so a conservative approach might be the wise move, with out of bounds to the left and the right. Hole 2, 423 yards, par 4 After crossing the main Plymouth to Tavistock road you’re faced with a long, straight par four. A ravine runs across the hole in front of the tee, so you must get your first shot airborne! The second shot has a small landing area in front of the green, beyond many humps with bunkers each side, so accuracy is essential.

Take the Course Tour
Hole 3, 282 yards, par 4 A short par four with a blind tee shot. It’s worth a quick glance down the fairway when you walk off the second green to see where you’ve got to go. A driver from the tee could reach the green, but two fairway bunkers lie in wait. Ideally hit a club that will leave you a short of these bunkers, to leave an 80-yard shot to the green. The green is very undulating so the shot in can make all the difference when it comes to the putting. Hole 4, 320 yards, par 4 We now play in the opposite direction to the 3rd hole. Another short par 4 and with the wind behind the big hitters can reach this green from the tee. The green is out of sight, but the tall marker post sits just behind it. Bunkers guard the entrance on each side and the green has two tiers, take note of the pin to see which tier to aim for. Hole 5, 476 yards, par 5 The fifth is the first par five and a nice driving hole, a perfect choice for the longest drive prize. You hit from a raised tee to a generous fairway. There is little trouble on this hole and it is a good birdie opportunity. The green is large but fairly flat.
12 www.yelvertongc.co.uk
Hole 6, 142 yards, par 3 The easiest hole on the course, according to the stroke index that is! A nice little par three with a large green. Although an easy hole, there are lots of humps and hollows for any ball that is short. Normally a short iron would be the club, but played into a strong wind, most come up short. Hole 7, 436 yards, par 4 Now for a difficult, long, uphill par four. The fairway bunker on the left attracts golf balls like a magnet, but a slice will put you in the gorse on the right, (or a hook if you’re left handed). Many will struggle to reach in two shots, but all but the best players will be getting a shot on this hole, so use it. Hole 8, 571 yards, par 5 The eighth is the longest hole on the course and for many years was the longest in Devon. From the tee you can see the green in the far distance. The first shot is downhill and in favourable conditions you will have to lay up short of the Devonport Leat. The hole continues with a gentle slope to the green and there are no bunkers to avoid on this hole.

Hole 9, 289 yards, par 4 We walk over the old Plymouth and Dartmoor Tramway to get to the 9th tee. A short par four playing in the opposite direction to the 8th. There is trouble right and left, but if you hit the tee shot straight you should have a straightforward pitch over the leat to this long green. Hole 10, 420 yards, par 4 The Devonport Leat has to be carried twice on this hole. Best to aim at the left-hand side of the fairway as the ground falls away to the right with gorse bushes awaiting. The next shot will usually be a long iron over the leat to an undulating green. A bunker on the right and a swale on the left will catch any off-line shots. Hole 11, 481 yards, par 5 A par five off the white tee, or a par four from the yellow, it is uphill all the way. From the back tee you have a 180-yard carry over the ravine with plenty of trouble on both sides. The fairway bunkers then come into play, the choice is lay up or go for the green. From the yellow tee it is simply two good hits to reach the green.

Hole 12, 179 yards, par 3 During busy periods you might have to wait for the 12th green to clear, but there is no better place to sit down and admire the view! This lovely par three is a real gem and is well protected by bunkers left, right and centre. When the ground is hard you will need to approach from the left side by running the ball in through the gap. Hole 13, 444 yards, par 4 One of the classic holes on the course, 444 yards, stroke index one and with the second shot uphill to a green sitting just beyond a huge ravine. The fairway is generous so you can give the drive the full treatment. Alternatively it’s two fairly straightforward shots then a pitch on. Hole 14, 347 yards, par 4 This hole doglegs to the left and is downhill to the green. A long iron towards the marker post is all you need in good conditions. A driver over the corner of the road could see your ball end up on or near the green, or it might never be seen again! Hole 15, 336 yards, par 4 The easiest of the last five (loop) holes. The tee shot is straightforward enough, just don’t go too far right as the fairway falls that way. A good drive should leave a mid or short iron to the large green. The back half of the green is quite level, but the front half slopes steeply to the front. If you hit the wrong section of the green, the putting can be very tricky.
16 www.yelvertongc.co.uk
Hole 16, 428 yards, par 4 Another great hole, two accurate shots are required. The tee shot may only be an iron into position, but then the second shot is fraught with danger. There is trouble left and right and the entrance to the green is narrow. Once on the green it is fairly straightforward as the green is quite level. Hole 17, 188 yards, par 3 Now for another great par three and again the pressure doesn’t let up. The leat runs down the right-hand side and on the left the ground falls away to road which is out of bounds! The fairly flat green is a great place to see your tee shot land! Hole 18, 384 yards, par 4 If you’ve still got a good score going two more good shots are required to get safely onto the last green. The fairway is quite generous but a bunker threatens the drive. The second shot has to carry the ravine again to get onto the two-tiered green. Next stop the bar for that well-earned pint!

We will fit the correct make of club, length, shaft flex, lie angle, grip size and make up of set and the service is FREE if you purchase your new set of clubs from us. Often this purpose-built set can transform a player’s game.
Additionally, we are a Powakaddy and Motocaddy service centre. We provide warranty work and servicing for all Powakaddy models and also keep parts in stock. Practice Facilities
At Yelverton Golf Club we have some of the best practice and coaching facilities in Devon. At present we have a 280-yard practice range which can accommodate up to 20 golfers all hitting off grass with numerous target greens, a large putting and chipping green, practice bunker, pitching green and an indoor academy, which is equipped with GASP coaching software and GolfAchiever launch monitor. Our latest addition is a revolutionary new coaching system that will help all golfers learn and improve quickly as well as having a better understanding of their game. The system uses an Ipad 2 with a built-in high definition camera and is loaded with V1 golf analysis software, which will give you a completely clear picture of the swing and clubhead and has many drawing tools.
We will be able to look at all aspects of your game including putting, chipping and bunkers as well as using it on the course itself. The main advantage of this system is that it is completely portable and can be used outdoors, so you can see your ball flight instead of hitting into a net. To complete our practice facilities we have a 9-hole academy course, which is perfect for new juniors to give them a feel of what it is like to play golf before tackling the main 18-hole course.

Members at Yelverton enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year. There are fixtures against other clubs, together with much competition to be enjoyed alongside fellow members, some for silverware and some of a more social nature. Men The men at Yelverton are keen supporters of competitions organised by the Devon Golf Union and enter both the Parker Trophy and Palairet Trophy each season. Both these competitions are played on a knockout basis against other clubs, the former being for lower handicap or scratch golfers and the latter for those with a handicap up to 18.
More pairs golf is enjoyed in the Plymouth Area League, a long-established team competition amongst local golf clubs. Six teams from Devon, of which Yelverton is one, and six from Cornwall play in separate leagues in a seasonlong weekly competition, starting in May and finishing in September. The winners of the Devon League then play the winners of the Cornwall League in the final on a neutral course. Play takes place on Friday afternoons and is generally preceded or followed by both sides enjoying a social gettogether in the clubhouse. For those players with less of a competitive edge, there is still the opportunity to represent the club. Yelverton enjoys e l v e r t a number of club matches – friendly fixtures Yagainst other clubs – throughout the year.

Within the club itself most weeks sees some form of competition. There are monthly medals and Stablefords and a host of honours board trophies to be played for. Among these are the Famous Grouse and Smerdon trophies (both foursomes events) and the Merivale Cup which is a singles knockout event. There are also singles and pairs knockout competitions held throughout the winter to keep the interest going. Yelverton was proud to have been chosen to host the Devon Salver & Youth Championship in 2012, a prestigious event run by the county. Ladies Although their section numbers fewer than the men, the ladies at Yelverton are no less committed to enjoying competitive golf both against other clubs and alongside their fellow members.
30 www.yelvertongc.co.uk
The ladies generally play at the club on Thursdays, and they too enjoy a monthly Stableford and medal, along with several other knockout competitions over the course of the season. Friendly matches against other clubs are also part of the annual golfing calendar, giving the opportunity to make new friends and enjoy play on some of the other excellent courses in the region. Teams are also entered in some of the events run by the county, such as the President’s Trophy, which features clubs being drawn in groups and playing each other on a round-robin league basis, and the Doris Willes-Little Trophy, which is a knockout event and therefore affords no margin for error!

Membership of the Section is open to Yelverton club members that are at least 60 years old and that have an active handicap. The Vets meet at 8.30am every Wednesday morning in the Clubhouse Lounge for a ‘Roll-Up Draw’. The competition round may be a 4BBB, a Texas Scramble, a 3-Ball (1, 2 or 3 to count), or whatever the Vet’s Captain should decide for that day. The Vets also arrange an Individual Handicap Qualifying Round played from the white tees on the first Wednesday in the months March through to October. This provides them with an opportunity to maintain an active handicap as required by the English Golf Union but away from the
rigours of the more serious club medal rounds. The Vets also have a full programme of friendly matches against many other clubs in Devon and Cornwall. This programme normally begins in late March with a home match against Stover GC; this is followed by another 33 friendly matches against other clubs during the year. There are two individual knockout competitions staged each year; the Frank Humphreys Trophy and the Harry Hewson Plate. There is also the Jim Ball Trophy, this is awarded to the most consistent golfer during the year playing in the Individual Qualifying rounds. In mid-August each year the Vets stage the Yelverton Veteran’s Open. This normally attracts more than 100 senior Y e l v e r t golfers from all over the South West and occasionally even further afield; the Yelverton Vets Open is considered by many to be an annual must-play event.

The Pounders Pounders grew from humble beginnings in the 1980s when a small group of friends who were all members of Yelverton Golf Club met regularly on Tuesday mornings for a social but competitive round of golf. At the end of each round £1 would be collected which would fund prizes for a Christmas Competition with a prize-giving dinner and celebration afterwards. It was in those early days that Dick Tobin, the incumbent steward, described them as the “pound-a-week-men” which instantly became “Pounders”. The principles remain the same today and despite inflation it still costs just £1 a week to be a member. Pounders enjoy playing a competitive round of golf in a friendly environment with emphasis on enjoying themselves.
Of the 50 active playing members from within Yelverton Golf Club many turn up regularly to take part in one of the varied competitions that are held every Tuesday or Thursday morning. Those taking part are expected to be ready to play at 7.45am when balls are drawn for teams to be played in that morning’s competition. Non-members are warmly welcomed and are encouraged to take part and enjoy the hospitality afforded to them. Individual competitions are played on a Tuesday every month featuring either a Medal, Bogey or Stableford format which may also be qualifiers for club handicapping purposes. Various fun competitions are also introduced at the Captain’s discretion throughout the year.

Juniors
Yelverton Golf Club affords the best introduction for juniors regardless of age. Whether male or female, golf gives a marvellous opportunity to discover a sporting passion which can last a lifetime. With expert professional support the juniors can improve their skills quickly and efficiently, enjoying the many activities that are open to them. Junior tournaments and inter-club matches are available to both boys and girls throughout the year. Tim McSherry, one of our PGA Professionals, is a junior U-18 coach, while Yelverton is a County Development Centre and the home of the Yelverton Junior Academy which boasts arguably the strongest junior section in the South West of England.
Under the expert guidance of our other PGA Professional, Steve Dougan, there are currently four coaching sessions on the weekend as well as numerous golf days throughout the school holidays. In addition to offering a comprehensive lesson programme there is also a monthly order of merit competition on our academy course. Booking is essential for all junior lessons and activities due to high demand. Steve also organises matches against junior sections from other golf clubs and since the first match in 2009 Yelverton Academy Juniors have proved very competitive against their peers. Visitors
Visitors with a current handicap certificate are welcome to come and enjoy the experience of playing at Yelverton on weekdays and at weekends. We are a fairly relaxed club, but we do ask visitors to respect our rules and standard golfing etiquette to ensure their visit runs as smoothly as possible. The club operates a dress code that is common with most traditional Private Members’ golf clubs, namely smart casual in the clubhouse and on the golf course, jacket and tie for formal occasions. If you are still unsure, the dress code in full can be viewed on our website, www.yelvertongolf.co.uk
Reduced rates are available to guests of members, to holders of the Devon county card and, on weekdays only, to members of the Armed Forces and the emergency services. Details of current prices can also be found on our website. Our bar is open throughout the day and you are always welcome in the clubhouse to enjoy a social drink or friendly meal. There is plenty of choice for places to stay locally from the luxurious Moorland Links Hotel to cheaper B&Bs.

Bar and Catering
After a tough round of golf there are few more welcoming sights than the clubhouse, where you can relax in comfort whilst enjoying a nice drink and a bite to eat. Whether you fancy just a coffee and a cake, or a couple of pints and an all-day breakfast, you will be made to feel most welcome. In the summer, the clubhouse is open from 7.30am to 10pm and the bar from 10am to 10pm on weekdays and from 8am to 10pm at weekends. Whatever time of year, the bar is open all day and doesn’t close until after
40 www.yelvertongc.co.uk
the sun has gone down (except Christmas Day). Catering is available from 8.30am to 4pm on weekdays, 8am to 5pm on Saturdays and from 8am to 4am on Sundays. Please note, all these times are subject to change and closing times are earlier in the winter months. We have a nice selection of beers available at Yelverton. Most popular are the real ales, we stock two of these, the award-winning Tribute from St.Austell Brewery as well as Jail Ale from the nearby Dartmoor Brewery of Princetown. Add to these, Guinness, Carlsberg (probably the best lager in the world) and San Miguel and the easy-to-drink cider, Thatcher’s Gold.
Our catering team is very highly thought of, and you only need enjoy one meal with us to see why. The selection of food on offer and quality of the fare is exceptional, beginning with a full breakfast menu, a host of sandwich and hot baguette options, through main meals featuring filling favourites such as ham, egg and chips, home-made chicken curry, home-made pie of the day and a host of other popular alternatives. And that’s before you catch sight of which particular delights are displayed on the specials board.
On most Sundays many of the members tuck into a traditional roast with fresh seasonal vegetables, roast potatoes, home-made dessert and coffee. This has proved very popular and it is advisable to book in advance. Private functions can also be arranged if it fits in with the Club’s calendar. Please talk to Claire if you would like to make an inquiry by calling 01822 852824 (Ext 104).

How to Find Us
Yelverton Golf Club is situated just south of the village of Yelverton on the south-western edge of Dartmoor in Devon. Set close to the A386, it is seven miles from Tavistock to the north and nine miles from Plymouth to the south. For satellite navigation purposes our postcode is PL20 6BN.
Directions From Plymouth Head out of the city on the A374, before joining the A386 to Yelverton and Tavistock. After around eight miles look for Golf Links Road on the left and follow this road to the clubhouse. The clubhouse, car parks, first hole and practice fairways are here. The other seventeen holes are on the other side of the main A386 road.
From Tavistock Head southwest on the A386 towards Plymouth. After about six miles look out for a signpost for the golf club, whose entrance is on the right. Public transport The nearest station is Bere Alston, which is about six miles away. However, it is probably wiser to alight at Plymouth and catch a taxi, we are around a 15 or 20-minute journey away. From Plymouth, direct train services run to Exeter, Y e l v e r t Taunton, Bristol Parkway and beyond.
