Welcome to Pinta London
Once more in London, and each time with increasing enthusiasm and expectations, this fourth edition of Pinta London, celebrates what we believe is its best and most comprehensive presentation to date. Many of our usual galleries are participating again; we welcome many new galleries of proven and undoubted quality and we are pleased to share a great deal of news with you. Pinta London pays homage to two influential Argentinean artists who have been working for decades in Europe. César Paternosto, established in Spain, is one of the leaders in Latin American Geometric Abstraction and Luis Tomasello, in France, who is crucial in the kinetic and optical art movements. This year the new curators of Pinta Projects, the renowned Catherine Petitgas and Kiki Mazzucchelli, have invited ten young Latin American artists who live in Europe. This will be, with no doubt, one of the highlights of the Show and will allow the public to appreciate the progress of our artists in the last fifty years. After the enthusiastic welcome it received last year when we presented it for the first time, Pinta Design will return to the fair. This year, curated by Manuel Díaz Cebrián, it will not only present objects designed by renowned and distinguished young designers, but it will also open up an academic debate in the Pinta Auditorium, regarding the relationship between art and design Speaking of auditorium, it is known that Pinta London, is more that an art fair and that our mission is to showcase, educate, promote and bring awareness to the best of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Art. With this in mind, this year we are proud to host some panels and debates in our Auditorium that will continue and reinforce this tradition initiated in the first Pinta London. Lastly, this year we will see the debut of a special Project: Art Numérique/ Pinta London an exhibition focused on art and technology, curated by Rolando J Carmona, which we hope it will become a must in Pinta London, in the years to come. A very big thanks to all the artists, galleries, curators, sponsors - especially to the Governments of Spain, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina- and to all my team.

Pinta London Museum Acquisition Programme
Ever since it was created, our Fair has maintained strong bonds with the British and international academic and museum worlds. This has not only been a strategy to disseminate Latin American Art but also a market strategy, as institutions that collect such art can find quality works for their collections at Pinta London. Both through a selection of art galleries that exhibit their works at the Fair as well as through Pinta Projects, this year curated by Catherine Petitgas –a prestigious collector– and Kiki Mazzucchelli -a distinguished curator- Pinta London´s offer is renewed and enriched. Thus it furnishes new opportunities to get in touch with and purchase new works by various artists. From the very beginning, and thanks to a matching fund scheme provided by Pinta London, the Pinta Museum Acquisition Programme has enabled European museums to enrich their respective collections with Latin American works. This year’s participants are Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, MIMAMiddlesbrough Institute of Modern Art and ESCALA- Essex Collection of Art from Latin America. Over these few years, the museums above mentioned, along with Museo Reina Sofía from Madrid and Barcelona´s MACBA, all of them especially interested in building collections of Latin American Art, have increased their heritage through this programme. We feel proud of our contribution to generate knowledge and to the expansion of a steadily growing market with favorable prospects, as we thus meet the objectives set by Pinta London.

Luis Tomasello La Plata, Argentina, 1915
Luis Tomasello lives and works in Paris. A fascination with ‘light and the movement of light, in other words colour’ has been Tomasello’s constant preoccupation over a career that spans more than 55 years. The discovery of Mondrian and a visit to the Chartres cathedral’s stained-glass windows led him to settle in Paris in 1957 and join the Galerie Denise René in 1958. Since then, he has developed his trademark series of Chromoplastic Atmospheres, grid-like white wood reliefs with brightly painted backgrounds creating halos of vibrating colour on white backgrounds. In other series such as Plastic Objects he explored the effect of light on a black surface while maintaining a strict grid-like structure. ‘I am interested in the reflection of colour, it is like trying to define the moon’, he said to his friend the great Argentine writer Julio Cortázar, with whom he also produced the book-object Negro el 10 first published in 1984.

CEsar paternosto La Plata, Argentina, 1931
Paternosto´s mature pictorial development has an “exemplary dimension in the most positive sense that can be given to the term, its nature as a paradigm of present modernity.” (...) “I hope that this expression, ‘present modernity’, is not too difficult to understand. It implies an understanding of the contemporary which is imbued with the very historicism which in turn imbued the modern movement in the past. But not only as an exercise in memory and continuity, but rather as an exercise in discrimination and analysis. In delving deeper.” (...) “the work by Paternosto (...) might be understood as the prolongation of that Newman´s late work (‘Profile of Light’, 1967; collection Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía). The white at the middle appears to have widened so much as to have pushed the lateral bands of color towards the margins of the canvas, even away from the flat surface, taking refuge on its borders or edges. This displacement had pointed out to the three- dimensional quality of the painting, towards its physicality, its objecthood. Thus Paternosto would insist, as did other American artists of his generation, in going beyond the dichotomy painting and sculpture, between pictorial space and sculptural space, and given his reductive drive, would arrive at a sort of ultimate limit of the plastic form.” Tomás Llorens, “Menos es más si es más” (Less is more if it´s more) in César Paternosto exhibition catalogue; Segovia: Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente, 2004 (Translation Deborah Bonner)

THE ImMIGRANTs
Via Circo 1 20123 Milano Italy T. +39 026 739 1341 T. +39 342 317 4634 info@federicoluger.com www.federicoluger.com DIRECTOR: Federico Luger THE IMMIGRANTS is an itinerant and collective curatorial project. Very few words have the representative power and the semantic density of the word immigrant. The curatorial project takes this word as a point of departure, it starts exactly in this universe of sense that in a few letters delimitates a territory—as a frontier—and at the same time, it suggests a worldother, like a dream. The name “The Immigrants” contains in a few words the invitation to a journey, to imagine a future, the promise of an imagined or imaginary land, the occasion to leave behind the socio-political borders and, may be, the invitation to wear a different mental habitus. Experiment 2. Venice. was THE IMMIGRANTS’ the first exhibition, organized with the collaboration of Ghostart, Le Case d’Arte, prometeogallery di Ida Pisani, Studio La Città, and Federico Luger Gallery, it featured works by Alighiero Boetti, Igor Eškinja, Franklin Evans, Jacob Hashimoto, Radhika Khimji, Gianni Pettena, Luca Pozzi, Giovanni Rizzoli, Richard Prince, Santiago Sierra and Traslochi Emotivi.

In some cases it was a matter of professional choice or of finding a more suitable environment for developing their practice; in others, it may have been purely due to chance encounters and the establishment of long lasting personal bonds. Without a doubt, a curatorial focus on Latin American artists based in Europe allows for a broad range of distinct practices and approaches, and this is undeniably reflected on the formal and conceptual diversity of the projects presented here. However, one particular characteristic seems to provide a certain unity to this group of works. Even if living and working abroad, all the artists presented in the Pinta Projects seem to address the specific cultural or political legacies of their home countries in a more direct and natural way than their counterparts who stayed put. We can only speculate about the reasons behind this, but one of the possibilities is the condition of being removed from a specific artistic circuit and having to reinvent oneself within what is

MA in Fine Arts from the Chelsea College of Arts, lives and works in London. Inspired by a family tradition of print-making, Martínez has developed a practice that oscillates between painting and print-making to explore notions of nostalgia and utopia in this installation, entitled Colour Testing. Using a palette of muted tones derived from the three basic colours of printing, he evokes tropical nonchalance, decaying modern architecture and the ineluctable passage of time. A set of photographs of an unfinished pleasure boat, recovered from the studio of his print-maker uncle, sums up the mood of languid utopia. It is impossible to talk about a homogenous Latin American culture and it is a common risk to enounce our identity as a genetic essence reflected in art. This concept referring to what some call Latino is an easy source of idealism and a clichéd perception of what we are as a continent, easily forgetting differences to sustain common “histories or territories”. As an alternative option to these dynamics, the programme Art Numérique was created. Its goal is to broaden perspectives about our aesthetic universe in dialogue with today’s society. In the face of this context it is appropriate to generate readings that can help us understand the vibrant landscape of our continent. For more than fifty years there has been a generation of digital artists (in French known as des artistes du numérique) working towards a different direction, questioning new aesthetic forms coming from a globalised imaginary, different perceptions of reality and more
169
particularly, a fusion of these technologies with the human being. This generation cannot be understood through formal, conceptual or even local parameters that tend to give value to paintings or performances. The problem here goes beyond the expressive medium and confronts us with aesthetic dynamics that belong to the digital world. The term art numérique was created by Yvaral in 1975 to define an art associated to technology. This was thought as a kind of art that could be capable of generating aesthetic processes starting with the combination of mathematical algorithms. The origins of these aesthetic forms come from the early 1950s with Nicolas Schöffer’s experiments, specifically “CYSP 1” (1956), the first autonomous sculpture with a cybernetic brain that could respond to different stimuli from the environment. In the Latin American context, the first experiments were made during the 1960s by Enrique Castro-Cid, Marta Minujin (Simultaneidad en simultaneidad 1966); Geldmacher-Mariotti (Cubo luminoso 1968), Margarita Paksa, Ruben Nuñez, and later Luis Benedit (Biotrón 1970) and Waldemar Cordeiro (Arteonica 1971), amongst many others. Until that moment, there was no structure that could promote or generate a market for this kind of research. This was the main reason behind the creation of Art Numérique in Pinta London, as a mechanism to visit and promote this chapter in the history of Latin American art. Despite the fact that this digital art is characterised by being of no-place, it is possible to approach a historiography of local art in which our artists combine formal references from South America or local questionings about the common imaginary belonging to the meta-culture of the Web, which is precisely the main theme of our first edition.
Art Numérique / Pinta London proposes three premises: Pioneers / Local Imaginaries / Global Imaginaries. Taking these three lines as a starting point we invited three artists from different generations whose projects are linked with the Internet: Marta Minujín, Yucef Merhi and Santiago Torres. The goal of this selection is to convey the globalising character that art has in the Net through the particular vision of inventors sharing a particular “culture”. In this selection an evolution of a global meta-culture can be seen: from the daring character of Minujín to the ease in which Torres masters the technologies of video games. This puts into evidence the change of paradigm by which we are no longer inside a differed communication circle, but in a

simultaneous and expansive one. In this dynamic, information rises as an expansible architecture, able to be fragmented and transferred through a seemingly autonomous behaviour: an expansive structure and a community of telecommunication that relates to MacLuhan’s concept of the future of planet Earth: a Global village.
Marta MinujIn Buenos Aires 1943 “Simultaneidad en simultaneidad 1966”
A pioneer of Pop Art in Latin America and an active artist since 1957, Minujín is known mainly for her happenings in which the pieces involve the viewer, reflect on the world of media and reinterpret the pictorial problem through unusual situations. She has participated in different events, biennials and individual exhibitions throughout the world (The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the 27th Biennial in Sao Paulo, The Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the MALBA, Expo 67 in Montreal, amongst others)

“Simultaneidad” is defined by the artist as an “environment signal”. The piece generates a similar communicational model to what it would be known later on as the Internet. In 1966 Minujín, together with Allan Kaprow and Wolf Vostell, organised three happenings at the same time, in three different cities: Buenos Aires, Berlin and Colonia. The result of these simultaneous actions was communicated via the satellite “Flying Bird” to the three countries, generating an interactive process of transmitting real-time information. For this, the artist used sixty televisions, the same number of radio transmitters, slide projectors, cameras and film, sound broadcasting equipment and voice recorders. The result was a complex media environment transmitted via satellite. Days later the information was projected, 500 phone calls were made, 100 telegrams were sent to the viewers who watched the recording of the televised event, with the message “you are a creator.”

Yucef Mehri Caracas 1977, lives and works in NY “Maximum Security, 1998-2004”
Yucef Mehri is a pioneer of net art and Hacking Art in the South America. Merhi’s oeuvre navigates between regenerative poetry and information systems. He became popular in the late 1990s when he took control of the website of the Caracas Museum of Contemporary Art and built a parallel website. His work extends to multiple publications and has been exhibited all over the world, such as the New Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas, Bronx Museum of the Arts and in the Biennial in Istanbul, Sao Paulo and Valencia, among others. “Maximum Security” is one of the very first examples of Hacking Art (known as Net Art in the early stages of this movement). The installation showed is the result of a process of interception that took place during many years, of the personal e-mails of the deceased president Hugo Chávez. In this work the Secrets of State are transformed into visual poetry, gathering information that allows the viewer to understand the persona that created one of the most charismatic and most recognised characters in the media today.
Santiago Torres Paris 1986, lives and works in Paris “Tram en temps Réel”
Artist-programmer. His researches are based on deep analysis on numerology and geometry. Currently, influenced by video games and his personal relationship with the pioneers of Kinetic and Cybernetic art (Julio Le Parc and Nicolas Schöffer), Torres creates immersive and interactive spaces. In these works called “tram en temps réel”, the spectator interacts with his own body transforming virtual volumes that levitate into space, generating impossible geometries. His work has been shown by the “Galerie Denise René” in the principal art fairs in Europe and he has also exhibited in France, Belgium, Istanbul, Germany, Switzerland and Venezuela. “Tram en temps réel” will be accessible from a link on the web, to which visitors will be able to access through their devices. Santiago Torres put us face to face with the typical and traditional question about net art: whilst exhibitions still appear to be requiring mediation, these pieces interact with the spectator directly, turning him into an active participant more than a passive spectator.

Throughout history Latin-American craftsmen and artists have imagined and designed their future. They built houses, designed furniture, created beautiful ceramics and made stunning works of art and craft. What distinguishes their work however and makes it especially Latin American, is these makers’ acknowledgement of their continent’s rich and complex history, and their relationship to its stunning and myth-filled landscape. The contribution of Latin American design to the world is compelling and far-reaching. In the case of Mexico, the contemporary design of this vibrant country truly reflects both its history and its land and peoples. Today’s artists are mixing old with new and borrowing elements from around the world reflecting Mexico’s status as a truly global nation. Examples such as mortar, the “equipal” leather chair, and textiles - particularly the Mexican shawl - all demonstrate this. Add to this, more contemporary pieces such as the Acapulco chair, or contemporary Mexican architecture and you will see the importance of design in everyday life and culture. There is a recognizable feel to Mexican design that combines a strong and very original aesthetic, a truly unique personality and a strong sense of social and cultural awareness. Pinta Design’s aim is to present and promote the art and craft of Latin America. More importantly it celebrates the work of the artists and makers who produce this work and whose creativity continues to inspire and delight.
Damien Whitmore / Director of Public Affairs & Programming V&A www.vam.ac.uk In Mexico over time, craftsmen, architects and designers have created objects and furniture that emerge from a combination of culture and innovation, adapting and transforming formal design attributes with a mixture of culture and modernity. There is a prominent tradition in contemporary Mexican design for what our country stands out due to its distinctive personality and original aesthetics. To design means to relate with the world; to face space, people and time. As a designer, I like to closely and curiously observe the contemporary social and environmental context. The use of traditional materials and natural elements, together with the search of cultural heritage are the cornerstone of my design philosophy. In our country there is a lot of talent in design, highlighting the new generations which have a lot to contribute to the world as well as the richest craftsmanship potential and an extensive network of industrial workshops that has been meeting the needs of architecture, interior and product design.
Ezequiel Farca / Chief creator and CEO Ezequiel Farca Architecture and Design Studio – Mexico www.ezequielfarca.com I am obsessed with the intersection between design, national branding and commercial marketing. capitalized on misappropriations of the favela in order to lure a Western consumer, a process some refer as favelization. This topic remains my main interest. I am excited about the potential impact digital curation can have on the traditional curatorial processes. Technology can help expose people to information beyond the traditional channels. We use technology today to do what humans have done in analogue throughout history. Today we tweet, post and blog; in the past we shared books and mailed people articles. It is a natural progression – potentially more democratic and exploratory.
Adriana Kertzer / Design entrepreneur – USA- Brazil www.adrianakertzer.com Historically, Mexican design has been characterized as being composed of “cultural pairs”, ranging between the traditional and the modern, the handmade and the industrial and finally the aesthetic and the functional. Today, designers are aware that in the past two decades, objects being designed, including those produced industrially and on a large scale, become luxury objects and therefore inaccessible to ordinary people. Many designers have contemplated the way to measure the social role of design today. They have come to realize that returning to the basic principle of good design will generate solutions to our everyday problems. Designers are then reflecting on the materials that they use, their production processes and even the symbolic content of their creations. In these processes, many Mexican designers have turned to collaborative practices to push through new forms of production. They either collaborate with other designers, artisans, chefs, architects or other kinds of professionals. These joint visions are enriching the creative process, generating new ideas and products coupled with a fresher vision of the everyday. Following the Mexican modern movement, designers currently working in Mexico are turning to local labor and traditional materials from different regions of the country for inspiration. Some are doing this out of choice, necessity or convenience. By working together with local artisans and using locally sourced materials, Mexican design can now be more competitive in today’s design market. It seems that those collaborative practices which have been used in the past will now play an important role in the future of Mexican Design.
Ana Elena Mallet / Curator specialised in Mexican design – Mexico twitter.com/madamemallet Most of the relevant handmade design coming from Latin America today is rooted in the real principles of sustainability embracing cultural, environmental and social issues in a way that only a Latin could do it: with a great sense of humour and a hopeful vision for a vibrant present.
