Welcome to Pinta London
Welcome to this new edition of Pinta London. We are delighted to celebrate our fifth anniversary in this city and we feel that we have achieved a young yet mature fair, which is now established in such an important market. Five years reflect an important effort from all of us - an us that includes galleries, artists, curators, sponsors and everyone who makes Pinta possible - but it is also a sign of perseverance and success. It has not entirely been an easy ride, but everyone behind Pinta London has enjoyed every bit of the way. We are an active force of Latin American art in this city. Pinta London is proud to have contributed to changing the perception that the British and international public has of the art from our countries. There is a greater knowledge and more demanding interest than in 2010 when we first started, and this obliges us to deepen the quality and presentation of each Pinta London. New to Pinta this year is the launch of Pinta Photo curated by renowned writer, broadcaster and photography expert, Sue Steward, who will show connections between Latin American and British photography. Catherine Petitgas and Kiki Mazzucchelli, again in charge of curating Pinta Projects, have cast their eyes on Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese women and have carefully selected many of our best artists. Moreover, the content of our Auditorium Programme this year is focused on the role of women from different perspectives: the artist, the curator, the collector and museum director.
9
Regarding the historical content of the fair, we will present a show of important works in Black and White in Spanish Geometry from 1950 to 1970, curated by José de la Mano. This is the return for the second consecutive year of Pinta Media Art (before known as Art Numérique) presented by Rolando J Carmona with early works by Eduardo Kac, the pioneer of BioArt. In Pinta Design, Manuel Díaz Cebrián will showcase exciting designs from Mexico and Brazil featuring iconic works by the Brazilian Oscar Niemeyer. The main part of the fair will include important galleries that come from all over the world showcasing our artists and noticeably, for the first time in Pinta London, a larger presence from European galleries. Once again, our renewed gratitude to our Host Committee, our curators, our staff and our sponsors who, all together make this new edition of Pinta London possible.

Pinta projects Curated by Kiki Mazzucchelli and Catherine Petitgas
Kiki Mazzucchelli is an independent curator and writer working between London and São Paulo. She holds an MA in Visual Cultures from Goldsmiths College and is currently a PhD candidate at TrAIN (University of the Arts) researching exhibition histories with a focus on Brazilian art. She was the curator of Mythologies by Proxy at the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo in 2013. Other recent curatorial projects include Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin’s solo show at SESC Pompeia (2013 - co-curated by Camila Rocha) and the series of radio programmes OIDARADIO Conversations developed for the 30th São Paulo Bienal with Mobile Radio and Resonance.fm (2012). Recent publications include The São Paulo Biennial and the Rise of Contemporary Brazilian Art (in Contemporary Art Brazil, ed. Hossein Amirsadegui and Catherine Petitgas, London: Transglobe, 2012) and a chapter on the São Paulo art scene in Cities of the 21st Century (London: Phaidon, 2013).
Catherine Petitgas (MA, History of Modern Art, Courtauld Institute, London) is a London-based lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Art. Collector, patron and benefactor of several institutions in the UK and France, she is a trustee of the Whitechapel Gallery, London and of Gasworks/Triangle Arts Trust. In addition, she has been a member of the Tate Latin American Acquisitions Committee since 2004 and of the Acquisitions Commission of the Centre Pompidou. She is also a member of the Council of the Serpentine Gallery and of the Director’s Council of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. She was Executive Editor of Contemporary Art Brazil published in November 2012 by TransGlobe Publishing for Thames & Hudson Ltd and is currently Executive Editor of a review of the contemporary art scene in Mexico for the same publishers.

Since the turn of the new century, contemporary art narratives have been going through an intense process of revision and rewriting of art histories by bringing into light practices traditionally marginalised by dominant discourse. This process includes, amongst other topics, discussions around alternative modernities, a renewed interest in outsider art and the reassessment of the role of historical artists whose work remained hitherto unknown to wider audiences. In this context, the Projects section at Pinta London, now in its fifth year, continues to contribute to this process by providing an important platform for disseminating the work of Latin American artists to audiences in the UK. Last year’s projects focused on the work of artists who chose to live and work across Europe, reflecting the increasing internationalisation of the art scene in major European capitals over the past couple of decades. For the current edition of Pinta Projects, we have selected a group of women artists from Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Peru and Venezuela based both in their home countries and abroad who develop a range of heterogeneous practices. Latin American women have traditionally played leading roles in the development of local artistic avant-gardes, having produced highly experimental work at a time when local art markets were still incipient and often under repressive political regimes. Many of these historical artists have found international recognition in recent years: major American and European institutions have held surveys of names such as Ana Mendieta, Lygia Clark, Frida Kahlo, Lygia Pape and Mira Schendel, and works by key conceptual artists like Maria Thereza Alves, Graciela Carnevale and Anna Maria Maiolino have been included in several biennials and Documentas. Furthermore, amongst the most influential practitioners from a younger generation of contemporary Latin American artists we find several women such as Mariana Castillo Deball, Rivane Neuenschwander, Amalia Pica and Adriana Varejão to name a few. However, in spite of this increased exposure, contemporary women artists continue to be underrepresented in the global art circuit. We are extremely honoured to showcase the work of Brazilian artist Anna Bella Geiger, one of the
110
key figures in Conceptual Art from Latin America and a pioneer of video and experimental practices in her home country. With a career spanning more than fifty years, Geiger has produced an extensive and visionary body of works whose importance is being increasingly recognised worldwide. Her exhibition at Pinta London features pieces dated from the 1970s onwards and includes some of her most iconic works. O pão nosso de cada dia (Our Daily Bread, 1978), presented in her first multimedia installation at the Venice Biennale in 1980, refers to the sacralisation of food as a means of livelihood. In this work, the void created by the absence of food forms the image of the Brazilian/ South American maps, in a political commentary about the lack of access to basic human rights for the majority of these nation’s populations. Brasil nativo/ Brasil alienígena ( Native Brazil/ Alien Brazil, 1977) was based on postcards depicting indigenous peoples from Brazil that were widely found in newsagents in Rio de Janeiro by the mid-1970s. These postcards became popular at a time when the first indigenous reserves were being demarcated in the country and thousands of natives were brutally murdered by mercenaries hired by local landowners. The artist and her friends are depicted performing the same traditional rituals shown in the original postcards, referring to the crippled citizenship status of all Brazilians, as the artist once described it. Having extensively tackled issues of geopolitical power and national representation and identity in her practice, at the same time as continuously pursuing experimental approaches, Geiger is amongst some of the most innovative and influential artists of her generation. The other artists featured in the solo projects belong to a younger generation whose careers started in the first decades of the new century. Interestingly, many of them extend their practice beyond the traditional boundaries of the visual arts, experimenting in other areas of activity as part of their artistic research. London-based Brazilian artist Cibelle Cavalli Bastos first emerged as an experimental singer-songwriter renowned for her theatrical performances and blending of musical references. In her multifaceted artistic practice - which includes painting, watercolour, sculpture, installation and performance – she makes extensive use of colour, organic forms and found objects. Her work often plays with ideas of idealised tropicality and references to low culture that reflect and expand concerns that are also present in her musical work.
Sandra Gamarra, from Peru, is widely known as the founder and curator of LiMac (The Lima Museum of Contemporary Art), a fictional institution created to fill a gap in the cultural life of the Peruvian capital. The museum has a website, a visual identity and a collection consisting of reproductions of existing works selected and painted by the artist, but no permanent building or funding. At Pinta London, she presents a group of recent works that examine the failed attempts of modernisation in her home country at different moments of its history. The theme is articulated in works such as the large series reproducing the iconic Homage to the Square paintings by Joseph Albers, which feature almost imperceptible images of terrorist violence in Peru during the 1980s. Argentine artist and filmmaker Jazmín López, who studied with Guillermo Kuitka and Jorge Macchi shows a group of new paintings characterised by an expressionistic trace, often appearing as unfinished works in process. López is interested in breaking with the temporal limits of painting by presenting partial images that must be completed by the viewer’s imagination. Her celebrated experimental feature Leones (2012), which debuted at the Venice International Film Festival, was screened at the East London Festival last year and we are very pleased to feature the first solo presentation of her paintings in London. In her solo project, Brazilian artist Ana Luiza Dias Batista appropriates the nondescript furniture of the art fair to construct a customised environment for her works. The tables and chairs hired for participating galleries are used as plinths for her pieces: a paper suit rests on the back of a chair, mock up crumbles made in painted polyurethane are casually – but identically - spread on two table tops, on another table a broken finger made of chalk points indecisively to disparate directions. Through simple operations, Dias Batista often subverts the material qualities of everyday objects and the way they normally behave in the world, exploring the limits of perception and representation. Born in Costa Rica, Tatiana Echeverri Fernández studied with Rosemarie Trockel in Germany before
earning an MA in sculpture at the Royal College of Art, and currently lives and works in Berlin. She is renowned for her sculptural assemblages, in which she often employs found materials or cast-offs from consumer culture. These objects are removed from their original context and recast as elaborate and elegant formal arrangements that retain their cryptic power. Recently the artist has been working on a series of photograms in which she seeks to escape the flatness of two-dimensional representation through the use of colour. Working with the effect of colour gradients, she creates works that point towards abstraction and the notion of autonomous object. Echeverri Fernández also works with film and performance, and has curated several exhibitions. Spanish artist Anna Malagrida presents photographs from her latest series The Walls Spoke, in which she documents inscriptions and graffiti that appeared in the wake of social protest movements in Spain from 2011 to 2013. Comprising two suites of photos Socles and Walls the project is a kind of photographic inventory of barely visible traces of the scribblings that covered the walls of buildings belonging mostly to banking or political institutions in the cities of Barcelona and Madrid before being swiftly erased. The texts and words of original inscriptions were compiled for this project in two formats: a diary and a projection accompanied by a soundtrack composed of original sound recordings from the demonstrations. Finally, London-based Venezuelan artist Lucía Pizzani presents works from a recent series in which she continues to explore the relationship between the natural world and gender issues. In this group of works she uses the image of the butterfly as an allegory of the way women are traditionally represented in art and culture as unstable beings. Working across different media such as ceramics, photography, film and monotype, Pizzani explores ideas of encapsulation and transformation, emphasising the dual moral aspect that underlies the feminine fetish: the death of the subject when transformed into an object of desire and the renewal of desire when this object is converted into an impossibility.

Pinta DESIGN Curated by Manuel Díaz Cebrián
Manuel Díaz Cebrián, once again curating Pinta Design, is proud to showcase a selection of pieces form Brazil and Mexico as a new way to engage and activate design within our everyday lives. Pinta Design 2014 celebrates the works of Latin America. The themes of this year are Transform to Preserve and Design with Identity. Brazilian furniture has gained widespread recognition within the design scene in Brazil and it is now beginning to rival contemporary design production in Europe. Raul Schmidt, a leading Brazilian collector, sights the incredible diversity of industrial design in Brazil for one of the reasons of its popularity. He has kindly loaned three pieces, allowing Pinta London to show some of the most vivid examples of this idea such as the Rio Chair by Oscar Niemeyer.
Manuel Díaz Cebrián, is the curator of Pinta Design, having created the concept three years ago. As a former director of the Mexico Tourism Board for the UK and Europe, his involvement with exhibitions such as The Aztecs at the Royal Academy, Frida Kahlo at the Tate Modern and Tina Midotti at the Barbican amongst others, fostered a passion in promoting Latin American art and design. In addition to creating Pinta Design, he is also director of his own company, 110PerCEB representing various companies in the UK.
129
Mexico has also become very prominent in the design arena spawning many of today’s up and coming design stars. Leading Mexican curator, Ana Elena Mallet, has presented this year the show De Ida y Vuelta in Mexico which explores Mexican contemporary and industrial design. Her inspiration behind the show is the preservation of native handicrafts and techniques while making the designs relevant for today’s market. Select pieces from the exhibition will also be on show at Pinta Design. With the interest shown not only in contemporary Mexican design but Mexican culture as a whole, The Year of Mexico in the UK taking place in 2015 will be a cultural explosion of all facets of Mexican culture.

Mexico is going through a unique movement with regards to creativity and innovation in design. Traditional and avant-garde are being married together and it is important to demonstrate to the world the new ideas and methods behind Mexico’s design in order to gain, little by little, its rightful place in the world.

To exhibit some important pieces of Brazilian modern and contemporary furniture design, at Pinta Design 2014 in London, is an opportunity to offer visitors a moment of reflection and to distance oneself from what is currently going on in terms of design in central and northern Europe, aiming to present the evolution of the creativity and new languages and concepts that are characteristic of today’s Brazil, as well as its anthropological cultural influences, acquired through Brazilian tropical modernism.

Made in Mexico - The Rebozo in Art, Culture & Fashion gives contemporary artists, designers and textile students a spectacular platform to explore and reinvent this traditional garment in the 21st century. The rebozo shawl has become associated with the wider culture of Mexico, but the design and craft skills involved in its making are too easily taken for granted. This exhibition presents the ideal opportunity to celebrate the art of the rebozo over three centuries and to consider the future of Mexican textiles.

For the past three years, Pinta Design has been a bridge between a public eager for novelty and discovery and designers from Latin America bursting with fresh and creative ideas. I am proud to be participating in Pinta Design for the third time and collaborating with Manuel Díaz Cebrián to showcase the bold and confident nature of Latin America’s contemporary design!
Polo Sánchez-Valle, Mexican Liaison - Pinta Design
Following on from last year’s debate on the identity of Latin American design, I find this year’s theme addressing the contemporary use of our diverse heritage to engage with innovation and sustainability a most pregnant and exciting agenda. Looking forward to participating in Pinta Design 2014.

Pinta media art Eduardo Kac - Early Media Works Curated by Rolando J. Carmona
Carmona was born in Venezuela and lives and works in Paris. He is a Cultural manager and curator, with a degree in Architecture and Museology (Universidad Central de Venezuela), specialising in the conception of cultural institutions and the development of exhibitions in unconventional spaces. He was director and founder of the MUEM and Museo Mateo Manaure (Venezuela). He has participated and collaborated in more than 20 solo-shows and collective shows for museums and alternative spaces in Venezuela, USA and France. Currently, he is developing a platform for the promotion of Media Art from Latin America in Europe. Photo by Katt Sanchez
This is the second edition of Pinta Media Art. The programme aims to insert reference works of media art by artists born in Latin America, within private and institutional collections. This specialised profile makes us a unique organisation within the sphere of contemporary art, since it is the first time that a commercial fair attempts to throw light on this little known chapter of Latin American art’s historiography. For this edition, we selected one of the most radical creators of the 21st century, the Brazilian artist Eduardo Kac, whose work seeks to invent new forms of art. The display presented is titled Eduardo Kac - Early Media Works and it consists of a selection of works produced during the 80s and most of them previously unpublished.
133
In order to get a closer sense of this developing moment of his career, we invited the artist to answer five questions about his work.
Eduardo Kac Amalgam
RJC: Your performances of the Porn Art Movement during the rise of the 80s mark the beginning of your career. How do you move from this political claim on the body, to projects apparently more formal in their use of language, such as the Holopoems or the Videotexts? EK: Formal concerns were already present in my works created during the Porn Art Movement, which lasted from February 1980 to February 1982. A good example of a concerted formal development is my series Pornograms, in which I explore many different aspects of the relationship between language and the body. After 1982 I moved on for two reasons: first, I felt that I had done everything that I set out to do in the context of Porn Art Movement; second, I became convinced that the world was changing into a global network, and I wanted to participate in the process of developing the new digital culture. Already in 1982 I created my first digital work, entitled N達o! (No!), using a programmable LED scrolling message display board. A series of digital works followed. At the same time I invented what I called holopoetry, or holographic poetry: verbal artworks that were actual
134
Eduardo Kac Digital Poetry Nao
holograms. In these holopoems, I transferred the performative dimension explored in the Porn Art Movement from myself to the viewer; it is the viewer that has to move up and down, left and right, forward and backward, in order to explore the text, the textures, the colours, the transformations, the appearance and disappearance of the words in fourdimensions (the three of space and the one of time). RJC: According to Margarita Paksa, software design is a new form of conceptualism. What is your opinion about it? Do your investigations of the 80s maintain any relationships with South American conceptualists?
Eduardo Kac Tesao
EK: Only if we abstract the materiality of software would we consider it conceptual. Anyone who programs knows that there’s beauty, subjectivity, materiality to software. To say that software-based art is conceptual, in my opinion, is to seek comfort in what is already known. I think that the real challenge is to develop a new vocabulary that matches the new reality, instead of trying to reduce what is new and unfamiliar (software-based art) to what is already canonised in art history books (conceptual art). Concerning the second half of your question, the answer is no: my own work has nothing to do with conceptual art. Between 1980 and 1982, I made work that explored the relationship between poetic language and the body, not only as a theme but, most importantly, as material. The materiality of the body can’t be reduced to ideas; consider your own body: it is obviously not conceptual. Along the same lines, we can’t call an engagement with literary form conceptual, otherwise all writers would be conceptualists. I have fused these two concerns (the materiality of the body and literary form) into a new unit. From 1982 to the present, I have continuously explored new media, many of which I had to build myself in order to make my artwork, as exemplified by my early digital holograms and my telepresence art. Finally, what could be said to be more material than the literal creation of new biological life, as I have pursued through my bio art? RJC: Your minitel series anticipates what later became the Net Art. Could you tell us about the way these animations were created? Would such a proposition make sense in the context of present Internet? EK: The minitel system was proprietary, which is to say that I had to make the images and animations in the equipment produced by the company. Between 1985 and 1986 I made four works, which may not seem like a large amount by today’s standards of digital ubiquity, but it was very significant in the 1980s. To give you an idea, every single pixel on every single page had to be placed in its position by hand, like a mosaic. It was a laborious craft, especially if you consider that every animation has many pages. The works were placed online through the telephone company. The minitel is no longer operational in France, where it was created. However, now that the system
135
ceased to exist, it is considered a classic by the younger generation, and many young artists today make work that has the look of that era. In fact, young artists regularly organise international art shows in countries that still have the system, such as the International Teletext Art Festival, held in Finland with support of the Finnish Broadcasting Company. The minitel went from obsolete to retro cool. RJC: Your projects for the Minitel and Não! are regarded as major landmarks of the beginning of digital poetry. Could you discuss the importance of the electronic artefact and computer programming in contemporary poetry? In the context of your work, could we say the “the medium is the message”? EK: Every poem is indissociable from its syntax and its materiality, which is to say that in a poem everything communicates: rhythm, organisational logic, word selection, and material rendering. This is also true in a digital poem. The best digital work will be created specifically for the medium in which it is intended to run, exploring the unique possibilities of that medium. In my case, I created a loop syntax for Não!. The verbal material of the poem is organized in blocks of equal measure, which alternately appear and disappear in the LED display board. Each minitel work explores a different set of aesthetic possibilities of the medium. At the same time, it is not only the medium that counts: each work has a distinct semantic sphere. Não!, for example, is a quasi-manifesto, in the sense that the artist-poet takes a position: he rejects the yes choir, that is, he rejects a society that silently accepts received wisdom without questioning conventions.
136
Eduardo Kac Xorex,1982
RJC: You are the creator of a new ecology in which human, organic and technological systems interact to generate new aesthetic models. Can you tell about these concepts that were initiated in the 80s and later consolidated in esthetical paradigms such as Bioart or Telepresence? EK: Since the 1980s I have asked a series of fundamental questions about the nature of art. One such question concerns the fact that all art, from cave paintings to digital, has been created by humans for humans, which is to say that all art fits in a visible spectrum that goes from 390 to 700 nanometers. It’s quite remarkable to consider this fact. However, the world out there is richer and much more complex than this limited portion of the human spectrum. For example, when a bee lands on a flower that you perceive to be of a certain colour with certain patterns, because the bee sees in ultraviolet, it can see colours and patterns that we can’t. I have been making a series of works that, on the one hand, recognise aesthetic experience in non-humans and, on the other, invite the human to experience a non-human point of view. This creation of non-anthropocentric works produces a de-centering of the human. My telepresence and bio artworks seek to engage all life in a new ecology in which the biological and the technological not only can be reconciled but, ultimately, may become indistinguishable. Eduardo Kac (Rio de Janeiro, 1962) is internationally recognised for his telepresence and bio art. A pioneer of telecommunications art in the pre-Web 1980s, Eduardo Kac emerged in the early 1990s with his radical works combining telerobotics and living organisms. His visionary integration of robotics, biology and networking explores the fluidity of subject positions in the post-digital world. His work deals with issues that range from the mythopoetics of online experience (Uirapuru) to the cultural impact of biotechnology (Genesis); from the changing condition of memory in the digital age (Time Capsule) to distributed collective agency (Teleporting an Unknown State); from the problematic notion of the exotic (Rara Avis) to the creation of life and evolution (GFP Bunny). At the dawn of the twenty - first century Kac opened a new direction for contemporary art with his transgenic art - first with a groundbreaking piece entitled Genesis (1999), which included an artist’s gene he invented, and then with GFP Bunny, his fluorescent rabbit called Alba (2000). Kac’s work has been exhibited internationally at venues such as Exit Art and Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, New York; Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris; Castello di Rivoli, Turin, Italy; Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid; Zendai Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai; and Seoul Museum of Art, Korea; Kac’s work has been showcased in biennials such as Yokohama Triennial, Japan; Biennial of the End of the World, Ushuaia, Argentina; Gwangju Biennale, Korea; Biennale de Sao Paulo, Brazil and International Triennial of New Media Art, National Art Museum of China, Beijing. His work is part of the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Museum of Modern Art of Valencia, Spain; the ZKM Museum, Karlsruhe, Germany and the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. Pinta photo Curated by Sue Steward
Sue Steward is a writer and broadcaster covering photography, Outsider Art and World music, a reviewer for London’s Evening Standard and Monocle, and an independent lecturer. Curated exhibitions include Between two Worlds: Contemporary Latin American Photography and The New Alchemists: Contemporary Photographers Transcending the Print.
After four years of visiting Pinta in London, I am thrilled to announce for the first time, an exhibition dedicated to photography. Pinta Photo is a photography Tertulia and it promises an electric, eclectic mix linking visual conversations. My role as Curator seems fitting after my long relationship with Latin American music and my strong connections with its photography. Pinta Photo is designed as a dazzle of images in a salon and constructed to create an overview of Latin American photography today. There is no theme here but the selection is aimed at stirring ideas and exploring possibly mysterious and surprising subjects. Photographic processes and technologies being experimented on by these diverse artists, also link up cultural histories, memories and identities.
139
The photographs in the collection are drawn from the Latin American continent, the diaspora cities from New York to San Juan, Havana to Miami, and Madrid and Lisbon and the ever expanding population of Latino photographers in London. For Dafna Talmor (Caracas) her work with collage, involves layering selected images including the bucolic landscapes of Venezuela calculated to stir reminiscences of her travelling life.
Adriana Lestido From the series Mothers & Daughters
The internationalism here reflects the entire Pinta London, of course, and with that, it reveals within the photography corner, the dissolution of boundaries between different media and the constant transformation, shifts between the materiality of works and the swing from photography to painting, sculpture and film. Some of the abstract series by Gustavo Espinosa (Bogotá) convincingly resembles abstract paintings while others return to conventional processes and suggested narrative themes. Black and white prints have a strong presence in this Pinta London, and are being preserved in several documentary narratives. They are an appropriate medium for the diary-like imagery of Tontxi Vazquez (Nuyorican – Puerto Rican New Yorker). He shifts from the currently topical intrusion of a print’s surface by physical damage or introducing new elements into a portrait (see Lakota, 2012) and contrasts with Argentina’s celebrated photojournalist Adriana Lestido (Buenos Aires) who uses monochrome with her sensitive series Madres e Hijas / Mothers & Daughters. In spite of their beauty, she injects an underlying tension.

Also from Argentina is the marvellous contribution of black and white prints loaned from the Argentine Embassy, rare works by Horacio Coppola (1930s) and late 20th century views by Facundo Zuviría. Their street scenes, architectural details and street life offer a fascinating span of contrasting decades. One surprising person placed in Pinta Photo is Britain’s renowned composer, Michael Nyman, (Mexico City and the world). After many years of living in Mexico City, he developed a passion for its photographic history and the sights surrounding him which inspire his own work. With the Cine Opera series, he documented the crumbling opera house and that contrasts strongly with his digital street scenes – not just in Mexico but wherever he lands to perform music.

The presentation of In Conversation: Michael Nyman with Sue Steward will be followed by a panel discussion and this whole event will lay a trail for the expansive Pinta Photo 2015.

IN FOCUS Black and White in Spanish Geometry FROM 1950 TO 1970
The exhibition Black and White in Spanish Geometry from 1950 to 1970 features a group of works from the workshops of various artists - Manuel Calvo, José Luis Gómez Perales, José María de Labra, Ángel Luque, Pablo Palazuelo, Eusebio Sempere, Jesús de la Sota - that pertain to the beginnings of their artistic practice and that focus on the experimentation of space and geometry. This exhibition recovers the works of artists that have been fundamental in the formation of geometrical abstraction in Spain, who responded against the predominant informalism of the then Spanish art scene and developed a language that formally connected them with the European avantgardes of the early 20th Century. The works by one of them, conceived through an abstract and structural thought process, even maintained some sort of curious kinship with the Brazilian neo-concrete movement. The common denominator that articulates the works that form part of this exhibition, created between 1950 and 1970, is the use of black and white as the formative element of a quiet work, in which the preeminence of the structural composition is set above the colour and gesture.

DIRECTORS Gabriela Galati Riccardo Gay
The artistic project The Immigrants, created by Federico Luger, takes this word as a point of departure, it starts exactly in this universe of sense that in a few letters delimitates a territory—as a frontier—and at the same time, it suggests a world-other, like a dream. The title The Immigrants, contains the invitation to a journey, to imagine a future, the promise of an imagined or imaginary land, the occasion to leave behind the sociopolitical borders and, may be, the invitation to wear a different mental habitus. Experiment 4: This fourth edition of The Immigrants, features works by Enzo Cucchi, Igor Eskinja, Bruna Esposito, Edgar Orlaineta, Luca Pozzi and Giovanni Rizzoli. In this experiment, a group show brings together artists belonging to different generations and nationalities to Pinta London, creating a sort of terminal, an exchange station in which diverse experiences and visions intertwine, exactly as it happened in harbours over the centuries. It is also a celebration, a celebration of the colour blue. Blue is the colour of tranquillity, of the sky, of the sea; that extense and pure blue in which the sight of the dreamers immerses. 146

GAUR[sic]
GAUR[sic] is the result of the research started by the curator Nekane Aramburu in 2011, focused on the analysis and evolution of video art in Spain and its means of visibility and promotion, through the initiative of the Etxepare Basque Institute. GAUR, which means today in Basque, was the collective created by the first eight artists of the Basque School in 1966, becoming internationally renowned for their approach to artistic thinking and practice. GAUR[sic] seeks to internationalise and bring awareness to contemporary Basque art, by featuring the work of eight artists based in this region: • Pilota Girls by Sra. Polaroiska (Alaitz Arenzana and Maria Ibarretxe) • Hacia la luz y los vegetales by Colombina´s (Larraitz Torres and Sandra Cuesta) • Shipwreck With Spectator (Naufragio con Espectador) by Ixone Sadaba. • Postcity by Aitor Lajarin. • Gen by Juan Aizpitarte • Vexations by Zuhar Iruretagoiena • Working progress by Iratxe Jaio and Klaas Van Gorkum. • Hamaika by Saioa Olmo The artists selected have a solid and international career and represent somehow contemporary topics, such as the commitment 148

to social issues, the construction of new identities and the public space, the contrast between contemporaneity and tradition and the collective and the intimate spheres.

GAUR[sic] confirms that there are three topics which are representative of contemporary art practices: the strength and supremacy of artworks created by women, the intensity of collaborative projects and the establishment of multidisciplinary practices. Pinta London 2014 is the chosen venue to launch GAUR[sic]’s international touring, before travelling to Tegucigalpa (Honduras), San José (Costa Rica), Mexico DF, Montevideo (Uruguay), Córdoba (Argentina), Santiago de Chile and Managua (Nicaragua). The exhibition at Pinta London 2014 has been made possible by the cooperation of the Office for Cultural and Scientific Affairs (Embassy of Spain in the UK) and the Spanish Agency for International Development (AECID) who sponsors other Latin American venues. Nekane Aramburu worked on this curatorial Project between 2011 and 2013, in parallel to her job as a cultural manager and freelance curator in different countries. She currently holds the position of Director at Es Baluard. Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Palma de Mallorca. 149
