YEAR END AWARDS The highest point earners of the year will take home custom Burns Saddlery Saddles. The award will be calculated by ROM points earned at PtHA approved shows from Jan. 1 – Dec. 31. The award will be given to the highest point earner in three divisions: Youth 18 & Under, Amateur 19 & Over and Open Pinto. For the youth and amateur division, the award will be calculated for units only. A unit is defined by the PtHA rulebook as one youth/one Pinto or one amateur/one Pinto. Ties within a division will be broken as follows: the first tie will be awarded to the unit that earned points in the greatest number of PtHA approved local shows, the second tie will be awarded to the unit that earned points in the greatest number of PtHA ROM-pointed classes, subsequent ties will be awarded to the unit with the most first place point-earning wins, second place point-earning wins, etc.

To be eligible: Exhibitor must be a member in good standing with PtHA. The Pinto must be registered in PtHA’s regular registry. The following will not count toward the high point award: Points earned at the Pinto World Championship Show. Points earned from the average card at a Jubilee show. Points earned from a Novice, costume, leadline, walk/trot, produce of dam, get of sire, grand and reserve halter class or any other non-point earning class. The award: A Burns Saddlery saddle will be given in each division. The saddle will be presented at the Annual PtHA Convention. Award saddles are not redeemable for cash. Forfeited prizes will become property of PtHA and/or Burns Saddlery.

Represent your state at national PtHA functions! Be a Youth Director! As a Youth Director, you will be able to represent your state at national meetings in addition to informing the youth in your area of national activities. This is also the only way to be eligible to become an officer of PtHYA! To become a Youth Director, simply fill out the application found on www.pinto.org/youth and return it to the PtHA office. Applications will be reviewed and applicants will be notified in January of acceptance. The number of Youth Directors allowed per state corresponds to the number allowed for PtHA Board of Directors. To see how many directors are allowed in your state, check the youth page of www.pinto.org. In the case where more members from the same state apply than are allowed, the director will be chosen on PtHA involvement and potential service.

Shooting to Success R

unning out of the gate with a Western saddle, wearing chinks, a cowboy hat, holsters and carrying two single action revolvers, Helen Price runs through her pattern, gun in hand as embers from burning black powder pops the balloons. Price competes in the sport of mounted shooting with her Pinto horse White Hot Chili Pepper, better known as Pepper. Competing in the sport of mounted shooting for six years, Price got her first experience when she booked the Cowboy Mounted Shooting

Association Central Nationals at the Lazy E Arena located in Guthrie, Okla. Price works at this arena as the Director of Operations. At this event, Lily Rogers, wife of one of the top CMSA riders, Jim Rogers, approached Price. Letting Price ride her husband’s horse and borrow his holsters, guns and even her boots, Price tried the sport for the first time. “Number one, I hadn’t been in a Western saddle for over 15 years and that would have been to trail ride,” Price said. “Number two, I had never shot a single action revolver in my life.”

At her first attempt, Price got a 19 second time on the course and also received a video of her run. She said that some professionals will run the course in about eight seconds. After her experience, Price showed the video to her husband, David Price, who became intrigued as he watched. As a history enthusiast, Price’s husband joined her at a showcase to meet some of the History Channel’s experts who also happen to be on the CMSA Board of Directors. After his visit, he said, “I want to do this, we have horses, you know how to ride and I know how to shoot.”

At this time the Prices had three horses, a Warmblood, a Thoroughbred racehorse and a Quarter horse. David chose the Thoroughbred and Helen chose the Warmblood. To get their horses accustomed to the sport, they started shooting a regular pistol around them, watching their reactions. “As beginners, most people focus on worrying about how the horse will react to gunfire,” Price said. “In actuality, the hardest part is getting the horsemanship down to maneuver the 60 plus different courses of fire.” Having to turn, weave and run throughout a pattern takes a lot of practice. Price said she has to plan where to be and where she wants to go in order to maximize her chances of hitting the balloon. Making a gun change in the middle of the course and to not waste time while doing it is also challenging. Learning how to shoot was tricky for her, as she would spend hours in her living room dry firing her gun. “When you think about getting 10 shots off in 10 to 13 seconds, the process has to be based on muscle memory,” Price said. “One has to pull the hammer back, line up on the target balloon and then pull the trigger.” There was no exception to training her new horse Pepper. Purchased from her eldest granddaughter, Pepper seemed like an amiable horse. Price sent her horse to trainer Marcus Wadley. “I told him I would leave her for two weeks before I would call,” Price said. “Marcus gave me the ‘she’ll do’ after [those] two weeks and was more and more impressed with her ability the longer he worked with her.” After learning and becoming comfortable with shooting the gun off a horse, the next step was to get her horse accostumed to balloons which serves as the targets on the course. “Some horses can’t figure out where the balloons go and sometimes how they suddenly reappear,” Price said. “We had to put balloons in their stalls, fences, gates; the horses lived with balloons until they were over the issue.” In order to make sure her horse is prepared for a match, Pepper gets worked with live fire within a week or two before

stepping out into competition. Price said she does simple dressage work, circles, serpentines, corkscrews, lateral work and barrel turn work. “My biggest problem has been overcoming the difference in riding hunters for 30 plus years to a running sport,” Price said. “I do a lot of running without guns to be more comfortable with the speed.” Price and Pepper travel to the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo match and the CMSA World Finals each year. This year, Price won her class at the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo and also at the Lazy E Classic Shoot. She also qualified to compete at the CMSA World Finals this year. Riding Pepper as a shooting horse for a little over two years, she has qualified for three World Finals and is moving Price up into the rankings.

For anyone interseted in getting involved with the sport, Price reccomends to find a local club and find a professional who fits the needs of the rider and who is willing to go to the matches. As a member of the Pinto Horse Association, Price participates in the Open Competition Activities program earning point within the Open shows she attends. “I gain points and recognition for my horse competing at the same Open show that I would be attending to qualify for CMSA World Finals,” Price said. “I don’t have many open weekends to be able to compete. This program does not make me make that hard choice.” Developed to allow Pinto members who might not have the opportunity to earn national points and awards, the OCAP program allows participants to earn points at OCAP approved shows that will go towards OCAP specific awards. s the Color Breed Congress is approaching quickly, the Pinto Horse Association is gearing up for another great show. Each year, four different breed associations gather at the Built Ford Tough Livestock Complex at the Expo Square in Tulsa, Okla. The participating breeds include: the Pinto Horse Association, Palomino Horse Breeders of America, Appaloosa Horse Club and American Buckskin Registry. This year, the association is excited to host the Mule & Donkey Congress Show and the Ranch Horse Congress Show in conjunction with the Color Breed Congress. Both of these events will be held November 4-6 at the Built Ford Tough Livestock Complex in Tulsa, Okla. The Mule & Donkey Congress Show is an approved show held under the registration requirements and show rules of the North American Saddle Mule Association. Exhibitors who would like to participate in Amateur classes must hold a current NASMA Amateur card prior to entering classes. Classes within the Mule & Donkey Congress show include: Halter, Pleasure Driving, Barrels, Jumping, Snigging, Pylon Alley, Western Pleasure and so much more. The Ranch Horse Congress Show includes all breed open classes and is approved by PtHA, PHBA and ApHC. Registration requirements and show rules will be dictated with the respective breed rulebooks. All Breed classes will run according to the AQHA rulebook and All Breed Ranch Pleasure classes will be ran according to the ApHC Rulebook. Exhibitors wishing to show in All Breed Amateur classes must hold a current Breed Amateur Card prior to entering those classes. Classes within the Ranch Horse Congress Show include: Ranch Trail, Ranch Riding, Reining and Ranch Rail Pleasure. With an award budget of well over $150,000, awards will be abundant during both the Ranch Horse Congress Show and the Mule and Donkey Congress Show. First place winners in classes with five or more entries will receive a Tioga Territory Jacket. Also both shows will award medallions for first place to tenth place. High Point awards for the Ranch Horse Congress include: trophies for the PtHA, ApHC and PHBA High Point winners and Reserve High Point winners. All Breed High Point winners and Reserve High Point winners will receive a Gist Silversmith belt buckle. High Point and Reserve High Point winners in the Mule & Donkey Congress Show will be awarded a Gist Silversmith belt buckle. The entry deadline for all three shows is October 10, 2016.
