PT • WOMAN • A TRIBUTE は、ジョアオ・フィゲレイドが、ポルトガル女性に焦点を

PT • WOMAN • A TRIBUTE Marks the first time that João Figueiredo gathers together works focused on Portuguese women. With the sole exception of King D. Pedro V’s portrait – who ruled when the treaty that we are now commemorating was signed – the exhibition comprises fourteen female emblematic figures of Portuguese history from the medieval St. Queen Elizabeth to the twentieth-century diva and Fado singer, Amália Rodrigues. João Figueiredo has mastered crucial skills that enable him to emphasize as well as to hide often-unnoticed details in selected portraits from various periods and schools. In doing this he creates new approaches, appealing tales, fresh accounts, or unexpected and alluring revelations. It is a meticulous and brilliantly intuitive process accomplished by the modernist insertion of modules, (not so) imaginary boundaries and innovative geometric arrangements as if characters crave to emerge and communicate from mirrors or
obscure and extraordinary places. This results in a transcending intemporality that has been widely praised. Figueiredo is one of the rare artists sponsored by Swarovski. Its crystals are in fact crucial to his work. They confer a prestigious and unique contemporaneous refinement, helping to build up a perfect symbiosis between the multiple dimensions, epochs, and symbolism that mark every of his works. As a result each of these portraits presents a multi-faceted character and personality.
