From the Desk of David and Shannon

The premiere issue of Pinups & Hotrods Magazine has been a huge undertaking for me and Shannon, the founders and owners of Twisted Image Pinup. Long hours and sleepless nights staring at a computer screen, learning new software, countless emails and phone calls to schedule photo shoots - just a few of the hundreds of other things that have to be done to ensure we bring you a quality publication. We have spent the last two years working together side by side almost every weekend - whether in a hotrod shop, on location with a small folding table set up for makeup and curling irons, in a hotel room looking at a laptop going through images, or traveling all day on a plane then dragging around heavy photography equipment and suitcases filled with makeup to get to Viva Las Vegas. Shannon spends countless hours transforming the average female into timeless pinup bombshells with her amazing talent of vintage hair and makeup. I plan the shoots, using up to date digital photography and lighting equipment for high quality images, to make sure everyone is on the same page and ends up in the same place at the same time. I am responsible for the layout of the magazine, which is a lot more work than I thought it was going to be when we decided to throw our hat into the publishing ring. We will be starting with a bi-monthly online format for now, with the goal to have Pinups & Hotrods Magazine in hard copy in your local store throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts within the next year. We have to say Thank you to our staff and models, hair and makeup artists, and behind the scenes people we have worked with us over the past few years without them all this would not be possible.

Although the premiere issue has been a LOT of work for me and Shannon along with the staff here at the magazine - sometimes over whelming - the thought of giving up was not an option. We are determined to see this through to the end! It is our hope that our audience and our fans, enjoy Pinups & Hotrods Magazine as much as we enjoyed putting this together for you! New New England England Vintage Vintage Vixens Vixens Supporting Supporting Our Our Troops Troops Past Past and and Present Present Military Show Quonset Point, Rhode Island

A handful of the New England Vintage Vixens and photographer David Rose, owner at Twisted Image Pinup, took a ride to Quonset Point - the former military base in southern Rhode Island. It was a beautiful warm sunny day in September to mingle and take some photos with our military. We met active military as well as veterans from past wars. The Vixens and myself were so honored to shake hands and chat with these awesome guys and gals. We learned all about a Howitzer: how it works, what is used for and all the components. The guys from the Rhode Island National Guard knew the Howitzer inside and out and of course, the Vixens jumped up on it for some photos. As the day went on, we met up with four Vietnam Veterans that were there with six old school military jeeps, trucks, machine guns and all the equipment they used in Vietnam. It was so interesting to hear how everything worked and its purpose. These guys could not have been more friendly and of course, the Vixens were a hit with all the guys. We spent almost an hour chatting and listening to the stories about their experiences and again the Vets let the Vixens climb all over the vehicles for photos. Our day ended with some cheeseburgers, french fries and some cold drinks. All in all it was a great day - the Vixens and I plan on attending the show again this year!

Tivertons Tivertons Ronnie Ronnie Helger’s Helger’s Sweet Sweet Ford Ford F-500 F-500

The weather was perfect for a ride to Helger's Greenhouse located on the back roads of Tiverton, RI. We were on our way to photograph Ronnie Helger's totally restored 1963 Ford F-500 stake body truck. We pulled into the greenhouse parking lot to see Ronnie and his nephew, Joe Helger, watering hanging flowers that were displayed all over the property. Along with the hanging plants, there are rows upon rows of Snap Dragons, Pansies, Marigolds and other type of flowers and vegetables. The colors of the flowers displayed on the tables and in the greenhouse were the first thing that caught my eye. I have been friends with Ronnie and his family for as long as I can remember. All of our family members have worked together at one time or another either in farming or commercial fishing for generations. The Helger

family is the nicest, most down-to-earth family you will ever meet. You could call anyone of them in the middle of the night if you were stuck and they would come to help without a thought. I ran into Ronnie last summer at the Fort Adams Car Show in Newport, RI. We chatted for a bit and I listened to the history of his truck. When he was done telling me the story, I said we have to do a photo shoot with your truck and a pretty pinup model (of course) and submit the story and photos to a magazine. Little did I know 6 months later I would have my own magazine! We started the day by Ronnie pulling the truck out of the family barn. All he did was touch the key and the original 292 V8 fired to life and purred like a kitten. The sound was so smooth as he drove it down the gravel driveway shifting the 4 speed transmission. The 1963 F-500 was originally purchased from Tasca Ford, one of the biggest dealerships in Rhode Island and is still going strong today. Ronnie’s father Ed and Uncle Harry Helger purchased the truck from Bob Tasca Sr on April 1, 1963. The truck was originally used by Ed and Harry Helger, owners of Helger’s Farm Produce and Poultry. It was used for runs to farmers markets in Fall River and New Bedford Mass. In 1968, the truck started making runs to the Providence farmers market until 1989. It was then retired and parked in the family barn. Ronnie and his brothers would start the truck a couple of times a year just to keep the truck in running or-

der. In 2010, Ronnie decided to do the full restoration to get the truck back to its original condition in his father’s memory. Ronnie shared a story with me I have to share with you - one day his father and his uncle were on the way home from the Providence farmers market. The state troopers stopped them and told them they had to have lettering on the doors, per DOT regulations. When they got back to the farm, they took a pear crate, busted the sides off of it, painted Helger’s Farm Tiverton RI on the sides of the crate, took four sheet metal screws and screwed the signs to the door. That’s how the old-timers did things in back in the day! The truck as you see it today is perfect, minus the wooden signs on the door. When Ronnie and a few friends did the frame off restoration, he did it right. You cannot find a spot of rust anywhere on the truck; the paint and interior are immaculate, the motor was cleaned and is painted in Ford colors. If you see Ronnie at any of the local car shows, be sure to stop and chat with him!

Ed Reese’s 1941 Chevrolet Business Coupe

22

I was off to shoot with Ed Reese’s 1941 Chevrolet Business Coupe and met Ed at his business garage, Reese’s Auto Sales and Repair. I had not seen the coupe yet but I can tell this is going to be a good shoot. The garage has 3 cars on lifts and the floor is spotless - nothing is out of place. The drain oil cans neatly against the wall, everything was clean, the mechanics were in uniforms - all signs that this is a first class shop. I was looking around for the coupe but didn’t see it. Ed said the car is not there, but at the garage at his house. The shoot was set up by mu-

tual friends so I was thinking we are going to have to move lawn mowers, beach chairs, beach coolers and whatever else the average person stuffs in their garage to get the car out. Ed opened the garage door where I expected to see a riding mower just inside the garage door. But no lawn mower - all I saw was an awesome hotrod garage! There were pinup girl posters on the walls, a lift in the back part of the garage, a Snap-on tool box the size of a small car, trophies everywhere and all the little things had a place on a shelf or under the work bench. Of course the coupe was right in the middle of the garage and what a beauty! This hotrod was perfect. The flawless paint job in Black Rose had the shop lights gleaming off the car. I walked around the car 3 times just to soak up the awesomeness of this car - from the shinny chrome wheels to the hand etched drawings on

23

the side and back windows. It did not take long to see all the little details Ed did to this car to make it a show winner. Ed purchased the car in 1992 and then proceeded to do a 7 1/2 year rebuild. Working nights and weekends, whenever he had a few free minutes, he was working on this car. He started by replacing the original motor with a 1954 three carburetor 235 six cylinder Corvette motor and a four speed Monoz transmission. Ed wanted nothing but the best for this rebuild. Ed opened the hood for me and I took a look inside. The engine compartment the first thing I noticed. There was not a drop of oil anywhere. The motor was spotless. Ed went on to tell me all the things he did to this car. It has a 1968 Camaro 12 bolt posi rear end and a Mustang 2 frontend. The car originally came with a center post in the front windshield. Ed decided he wanted something different, so he cut out the post and replaced the original with a custom made one piece windshield. You have to see this car to appreciate the time and dedication Ed put into it. Ed finished the rebuild in 2000 and won his first trophy that same year. He has 59 trophies in all - 21 best in show, 26 1st place and 7 best Chevrolet and a hand full of others. It was such a thrill for me to see and do a photo shoot with this car. I would like to thank Ed for taking time out of a busy day to meet with me and letting us use his car for our premiere issue. I would also like to thank my beautiful business partner Shannon for getting all dolled up and modeling with Ed’s hotod! We could not have picked a better hotrod and model for the premiere issue of Pinups & Hotrods Magazine!

We would especially like to say Thank you to Ginger Watson and Catherine Cartier (Hellcath) for arranging their busy schedules to do full photo shoots with us, it was a honor to work with these extremely talented models! Bombshells for Boobies was establish in 2013, with just a quick photoshoot concept thought up by the Founder, Miss Naomi Lynn, who’s grandmother is a thirty two year breast cancer survivor. The concept – Topless pinups “baring it for a cure”. I didn’t want to create any old topless shoot, I wanted an image that promoted body positive values, women of all ages, sizes, and ethnicities’; not only baring their breast, but baring what they saw as their flaws to the world. The bodies in any Bombshell for Boobies photo have not been altered, or edited. We want people to be inspired by the realism, every day women coming together, and creating a community where we raise each other up, build each other’s confidence, and pay it forward. I put the idea out to the local Pin Up community and through social media and word of mouth the five original bombshells were born, Miss Naomi Lynn, Shannon XoXo, Allys Oops, Calypso Jean, & Rita. By our second year we had some shirts with our logo made, and started shipping them all across the United States (all our proceeds are donated to Dana Farber Women’s General Funds in Boston, Ma), and soon many women were asking how they could get involved with such a great cause. We decided it was time to recruit new Bombshells, and set forth with our mission. We offer photoshoots to all new members, including hair and makeup services to turn them into classic pinups, with the help of our fabulous team, pose coaching, and a day filled with meeting new people. (Note: Bombshells are not only women, there is a handsome line of Manups- a humorous twist on the classic pinups- you must check out on our website.) This year alone we have raised over $4,600 dollars and hope that number continues to grow! Besides all the cameras, lights, and merchandise, we offer people support, and love the one of one connection we get from actually taking time to get to know our social media followers. One of our original members, Shannon xoxo, is a two time cancer survivor, and connects with people about what to expect when going through chemo, how to deal with the loss of your hair, and other cancer related questions. When the group is out at events we like to meet people and have them share their personal stories of courage and strength, or just stop for a moment and remember their lost loved ones by talking about them with us. We often times share their stories on our Facebook page to help inspire others to continue their battle with the confidence of knowing they have a support team with Bombshells. To find out more information, find a list of events, order merchandise, make a donation, or become a member of Bombshells for Boobies, please visit www.bombshellsforboobies.com, Like us on facebook www.facebook.com/ bombshellsforboobies, and follow us on Instagram @Bombshellforboobies
