Innovation - then and now

A few months ago, Stewart, my friend and co-labourer in global mission over many years, accompanied me across town by bus followed by ever-narrowing streets by foot in the humidity of Seoul, South Korea, to show me a sight now forever etched in my mind. Our destination was the Yanghwajin Foreigners Cemetery, founded in 1890 as the place to bury the first foreign missionaries who died while serving in Korea. The cemetery was established on the property of a protestant church on a small hill that overlooks the scenic Han River that flows through the middle of the city.

We were there to attend the Lausanne ’04 Congress, a gathering of more than five thousand believers committed to playing roles in advancing the gospel to every person, planting and serving disciple-making churches for every people and place, equipping Christ-like leaders for every church and sector, and fostering kingdom impact in every sphere of society.

This was my first visit, but Stewart had been to Seoul several times before, so he knew where to find this sacred place. Originally, the site was on the outskirts of town, but the city’s unbelievable growth since the devastation of the Korean War seventy years ago means the cemetery today is completely surrounded by highways and buildings.

What most profoundly struck me were the simple etchings on each tombstone. No fanfare. No extensive histories. Not many words at all, really. Mostly, just a name, country of origin, date of birth, date of death, number of years in the country. It is estimated some 221 adults and, strikingly, 133 children are buried there.

Here’s the thing. I am almost certain none of us can name even one or two of the heroes whose bones lay in that ground. They lived not to be known but to make Christ known. They died that others might live. Today, millions of people following hard after Jesus across the country

will live forever in the fulness of the presence of their Saviour, Jesus Christ. And South Korea is second to only the United States in the number of missionaries it sends across the globe.

Imagine the initiatives employed back in 1884 when the first Christian missionary, followed by more, arrived in the country when less than one percent of the population believed in Jesus. Medical ministries, hospitals, theological colleges, dawn prayer meetings, revival events, and Bible studies peppered the country. Some forty universities and 293 schools were started by Christians. Finding creative ways to share the message every person needs to know was par for the course – how else would they hear?

So it is today. Expressions of innovative ministries are boundless. From gospel-saturated grassroots initiatives through the provision of health and education service to gospel proclamation among millions of unreached people through worldclass online media outlets. From one-on-one language tutorials to counselling services for trauma sufferers...to seed-sewing…to tourism activities. Each initiative requiring followers of Jesus to make sacrifices for the sake of others.

But that’s not really a big deal, when you think about it most soberly. Life is short. Not much detail can be compressed into an epitaph. Eternity is long. Whatever it takes, every innovation necessary, to connect with people that they might connect with Jesus. Even with people yet to hear just a few hundred kilometres to the north.

Save the Humans

There is More to Do

And to do it will take further innovation and risk.

If every single Christan in the world were to share the gospel today with every single person they know, more than three billion people will not hear about Jesus.

That’s the reality for people in places with no faceto-face access to the gospel. More than 3000 people groups globally are ‘unreached’, meaning there are not enough people within their own communities to effectively share the good news without outside help. And each year – wait for it – there are more people who have never heard the gospel than the year before.

This is Pioneers reason for being.

We are looking ahead to greater impact over the next decade. Not somewhat greater impact. Not just hang-on-by-a-thread kind of impact. Not just a trickle of new workers. In fact, soaked in prayer, over the next 10 years we hope to double the number of unreached people groups we serve.

Today, Pioneers workers from 80 countries serve close to 450 distinct people groups. What if we can partner with churches, and like-minded organisations and various networks to double that number? We are passionate to find novel ways to share unparalleled good news, to spread the love of God in many more languages, to make more disciples and plant more churches.

This is our vision.

Few people change the world… but a few people change the world. Namely, those who carry the

gospel in their heads and hearts. We have members living in all sorts of contexts, declaring the gospel and living in ways that are consistent with it. Individuals, clans and communities are being changed as the message takes root. Praise God. He is at work! Yet, still, entire people groups are desperate to hear for the first time the message of God’s love in Christ Jesus.

Saving humans is at the very heart of God.

We are looking to help many more Aussie Christians take that message to peoples in mega cities, small towns, obscure villages, and every other place where there are no churches.

Paul the missionary writes…

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners — of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Our vision for double impact over the next 10 years is to help churches mobilise more workers, to partner and network, to exponentially increase gospel awareness and fruit among another 450 people groups who will never hear about Jesus unless someone goes from ‘here’ to ‘there’. There's more to do. It won’t be easy. Innovation is key.

Wishing you a blessed Christmas!

‘She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.’ Matthew 1:21

All around the world, the Lord Jesus is still saving people today.

Innovation @ Work Preparing Arab Leaders for Ministry (PALM)

PALM is a diverse team of ten people from seven different nations with a shared vision: to see churches mature, multiply, and flourish across the Arab world and beyond. This vision fuels our work in North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, the Middle East, and Muslimmajority countries in West Africa. Recently, we’ve expanded this mission to countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, and India. In these regions, we work closely with local churches and missionaries, providing discipleship and leadership training that empowers believers from Muslim backgrounds. We aim to help them grow in their faith, share it within their communities, and, ultimately, nurture new church leaders who can teach and inspire others.

To make this vision a reality, we have created a structured discipleship curriculum which covers foundational teachings for new believers and moves

them towards deeper theological knowledge and leadership training. Each level is carefully designed to address the unique challenges and needs of believers in these areas. However, one of the aspects that makes PALM’s approach unique is our emphasis on 'orality', a method designed specifically for oral learners — those who, by choice or by circumstance, learn best through spoken, visual, and interactive methods rather than written ones.

“Two thirds of all people in the world are oral communicators – those who can’t, don’t, or won’t learn through literate means.”

ION (International Orality Network)

For some, reading is not a viable learning method due to limited schooling; others may have never learned to read at all; and many simply connect more naturally to verbal and interactive learning styles. Recognising this need, PALM created the Oral Discipleship Program, which embraces cultural practices of storytelling, symbolism, and group learning, opening doors for new believers from oral traditions, allowing them to deeply engage with biblical teachings without being constrained by literacy.

The orality approach of our program focuses on making biblical stories, teachings, and applications memorable through various interactive and visual methods. For example, facilitators use drama, mime, drawing, songs, memorisation exercises, prayer, and guided discussions. Each of the seventy discipleship topics in PALM’s foundational Level 1 curriculum is taught with these methods, allowing believers to not only learn about their faith but to internalise and live it out. The orality program builds confidence so that

learners share their newfound faith with others .

Karima, a woman from Algeria, provides a powerful example of how God has been using our orality program to bring faith to life for those who may have thought it was beyond their reach. After receiving orality training from PALM, she returned to her community to lead local women in Bible teachings. Many, much like Karima herself, had limited literacy and had never even held a pen before. During a lesson on Jesus’ temptation in the desert, Karima encouraged the women to draw symbols representing different parts of the story, helping them memorise and retell it. One elderly woman, ashamed of her lack of literacy, found joy and self-assurance in being able to participate. She wept as she realised, “We are all equal — those who went to school and those who didn’t.” The group’s transformation was undeniable, as these women, once feeling Isolated, now experienced joy, confidence, and a newfound ability to understand and share their faith.

Zehra’s journey to faith in Sudan highlights another profound example of the power of orality to transcend boundaries. Born into a devout Muslim family, Zehra grew up immersed in the rich traditions of her faith, relying on the melodic chants of Quranic verses to paint vivid pictures in her mind. Unable to read or write, Zehra committed these passages to memory through the guidance of local Sheikhs, becoming deeply rooted in her faith. Yet, a simple friendship between her mother and a Christian woman planted a tiny seed of curiosity in her heart.

As she grew older, Zehra’s life took her and her husband to Egypt, where they were soon expecting twins. Tragically, one of the twins died in utero, and doctors warned that the surviving baby might not make it. In despair, she remembered the faith and joy of her Christian friend back home. Desperate for hope, she prayed, “Jesus, if you are the true God, be by my side and guide me to the right path.” In a miraculous turn of events, her health improved, and her baby survived, sparking a deep sense of gratitude and a newfound belief.

Zehra’s journey didn’t stop there. Through PALM she discovered that her inability to read or write was no barrier to knowing and understanding God. With each lesson, her faith grew stronger, and even her husband became intrigued by the changes he saw in her, leading him to explore the Bible himself. Zehra’s story is a beautiful testament to the way God’s love can touch hearts across educational, cultural and religious divides, using orality to reveal His message in ways that resonate and stay with participants.

PALM’s orality program has grown from these transformative stories and continues to expand.

If you feel a stirring in your heart for this work, we invite you to consider joining us. Pray for PALM as we go into some of the world’s most spiritually hungry but hardest-to-reach regions. Pray for people like Karima and Zehra, that God will continue to strengthen their faith and multiply their impact. Visit our website to learn more about what we do, about orality, and the ways it’s transforming lives: www. progressingtogether.com. Consider becoming part of our team. By joining us, you’d be part of God’s work in bringing hope, truth, and love to those who might otherwise feel forgotten.

The Lord is creating something remarkable — a community of believers committed to meeting people regardless of their background, literacy, or location. We’re on a journey, progressing together toward a world where believers like Karima and Zehra feel empowered to share their stories and spread the message of God’s love and salvation through Christ in ways that connect meaningfully with their people.

PALM

Innovation through online presence

We live in a connected world where everything is online — our work, social lives, friends and family. But how does Christian mission fit within this digital world? More than three billion people have little or no access to the gospel. While the hope of the gospel has been spreading for thousands of years, these people have not yet had an opportunity to hear it. Today, 24% of the world’s population is Muslim - 460 million people live in the Arab world, 450 million follow Islam, and over 70% have no access to the gospel.

Although they have seriously limited opportunities to hear the gospel... they are online. There are more than 237 million active Arabic-speaking internet users globally, representing roughly 5.2% of all internet users.

The vision of Arab World Media (AWM) is to see mature, multiplying churches among all the Muslim peoples of the Arab World.

Using strategic digital media, we share the gospel online so Muslims seeking the truth about Christianity can find answers, be discipled, and connect with local believers.

Our primary focus is the 22 countries of the Arab world, but our ministry impact is global. Many Arab Muslims now live outside North Africa and the Middle East, and the nature of online ministry means we can reach individuals anywhere in the world. Thousands of Muslims are seeking Jesus online.

The following stories are just a snapshot of how God is using our team to connect with those hungry for Him. But there are millions more yet to hear the beautiful truth of the gospel. Will you join us and in what God is doing online?

TALEB’S STORY

Taleb, an Islamic researcher pursuing his Master’s degree at a prestigious Islamic university, found himself drawn to Christianity. His role required a broad understanding of religions, leading him to explore Christianity. Known for his thoughtful nature, Taleb embarked on a journey that would profoundly change him forever.

Taleb discovered one of our ministry websites aimed at Islamic scholars. After filling out an online form, he was contacted by Mira, one of our native Arabic-speaking responders. Recognising his academic interest, Mira shared a link to the Bible. Taleb began reading and was truly moved.

Their discussions on Christian beliefs like crucifixion, salvation, and redemption resonated with Taleb. He confided in Mira, “Your words are compelling.” Curious, Mira asked how he, as an Islamic researcher, felt this way. Taleb responded, “When I read the Bible, I felt a profound difference. I have read the entire Qur’an several times – never did I experience the same sensation as when I read the Bible.”

Mira asked what he had understood about salvation and the crucifixion. Taleb answered with clarity. She explained that knowing about Jesus wasn’t enough — he needed to know Jesus personally.

Taleb asked how he could experience this, and Mira suggested he pray for a week, asking Jesus to reveal himself. After four days, Taleb told Mira, “Since I’ve been praying, I’ve felt comfort inside of me. I’ve almost finished the New Testament, and I’m going to start the Old Testament. My life has changed completely. I’m a totally different person — I’m praying more, and I often sit in God’s presence. I love Jesus, and I will continue my life with him.”

Mira then encouraged Taleb to share his faith. They decided to pray weekly for those he wanted to reach. After two months, Taleb shared his testimony with a friend, who also accepted Jesus. Now, they pray and study the Bible together, a testament to the power of faith and transformation.

MUSTAFA’S STORY

'Mustafa' is a young man from Egypt. He was eager to gain a deeper understanding of Christianity. In his search for answers online, he came across one of our websites and connected with a digital responder. They sent Mustafa a Bible, and he began reading it, realising the importance of having a personal relationship with Christ.

“I want to leave Islam and belong to Christ!”

Our responder walked alongside Mustafa for eleven days, answering many questions. Eventually, he gave his life to Christ! They shared in Mustafa’s joy and connected him with a local network of believers. It did not take long before this new faith led to a series of challenging situations at work.

Seeking guidance, he relied on his discipleship group. His trust in God grew stronger by sharing his struggles with fellow believers and praying. Despite persecution, Mustafa remained steadfast in his faith and continued to pray.

“Every time I prayed, I received an immediate answer!”

Mustafa’s work situation continued to deteriorate, and he had to leave his job. This forced him to move back in with his family, who lived in another part of Egypt. Because of the distance, our responder lost contact with him for a few months. Then, finally, he reached out to them...

“Please put me in contact with a believer in this area.”

Tapping into Arab World Media’s network of believers again, they connected Mustafa with another group of local believers who are now discipling him and keeping him rooted in scripture.

As you reflect on the stories of Taleb, Mustafa, and countless others who are seeking Christ, we invite you to stand with us in prayer.

1. Pray for Seekers and New Believers: Pray for individuals like Taleb and Mustafa who are earnestly searching for truth and encountering Jesus in transformative ways. Ask God to give them courage and wisdom as they step into faith amidst challenging environments.

2. Pray for Digital Evangelism: Ask the Father to continue to use our digital outreach to reach those with little or no access to the gospel. Lift up our responders, asking for discernment, patience, and boldness as they guide seekers through questions and into faith.

3. Pray for Resources and Connection: That each person who finds Christ online would have access to Bibles, discipleship resources, and supportive communities. Pray for believers to connect and strengthen one another, especially those facing isolation or persecution.

In just one 30-day period this past year, the digital media strategies of Arab World Media led to the following results:

• 115,018 Facebook engagements

• 1,908 Bible downloads

• 2,261 seekers in active contact with our response team

• 49 people coming to faith in Jesus

• 14 people from a Muslim background joining a discipleship group

From the Chair of the Board

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the net.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.

Luke 5:4-6

Pioneers has always been about sending workers into harvest fields to reach those who have the least opportunity to hear the good news of Jesus. Today, our teams reach out to more than 400 unreached people groups (UPGS), which is cause for thankfulness to God. And we are trusting God to pray for many ‘more’ – more teams reaching more people in more places. For breaking fishing nets ‘more’.

In fact, we are praying we will double the number of UPGs we serve over the next decade, an audacious goal in this ever-changing world! UPGs are no longer only geographically confined. Massive people movements, planned and forced, means nations are ‘everywhere’. An expanded vision incorporates unreached places too.

If you think this is not a new concept, you are right! Our pursuit is not numbers or some arbitrary goal. It’s about renewed momentum in obedience to the Great Commission. It’s about discovering how Pioneers can adapt, adopt and develop ever more creative ways to reach our changing world with the unchanging gospel.

I hope you are encouraged by this news! Pioneers will always commit to send workers to glorify God among unreached people and places.

On behalf of us all at Pioneers, I invite our faithful partners and friends to pray for ‘more’ – that the nations might be blessed, the nets break.

Thank you for your support!

Financial Summary for the year ended 30

June 2024

As we reflect on this past year, we see a story written not simply in numbers and projects, but in lives transformed by the power of the gospel. The Word of God and people. A story shaped by your prayers, your sacrificial giving and your commitment to furthering the gospel in places and among people where it is desperately needed.

Financial partnership is a wonderful opportunity afforded to God's people - to engage in God's kingdom purposes; to show compassion for people's physical and spiritual wellbeing; and to witness miracles as God breaks into this long continuum of time and space and matter, of cause and effect, and reveals himself through astonishing interventions.

In Galatians 6:9 the Apostle Paul tells us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up”.

We are encouraged, spurred on, by this promise, knowing that every seed planted in faith will bear fruit in God’s perfect timing and for His greater glory.

You play a pivotal role in realising God's desire to bring peoples and nations to faith in Christ.

If you ever think you are too small to make a difference, you have never spent a night with a mosquito. African Proverb

We are deeply appreciative of your partnership! The Lord has His hand on you, and He will accomplish all He plans to do as we lean on Him and point others to Him.

OARF

Some Pioneers workers are involved in aid and development work through OARF projects that reflect an acknowledgement and understanding of the UN Sustainable Development Goals through a Christian faith perspective. These projects work with communities, seeking to improve conditions in a sustainable way and redress inequalities by promoting fairer and impartial systems of services, often for the least privileged and most marginalised members of that society.

Sunflower Ministries

Empowering Children with Disabilities in Northern Uganda

Sunflower Ministries was born from a passion to see children with disabilities treated with dignity, love, and given hope for a bright future.

Its seeds were planted when a small group of local and international women met some precious children with disabilities in their local area in a small town in Northern Uganda. The stories of these special children were edged with hardship and frustration, of mistreatment and disadvantage, because of the ways their communities viewed them and their disability. There was a desperate need for whole communities, families and the children themselves to realise their worth – that disability need not define them.

A small dream that began seven years ago with a few hands, has turned into a passionate eleven-person strong team using their various gifts and skills to encourage and empower children with disabilities and their families. Regular village visits, caregiver trainings, counselling, special education, play therapy and medical advocacy are the daily activities helping our community to see the importance and growth of each of our Sunflower children.

Our future, and the future of our sunflowers looks

bright! There are many community doors opening for us to share about disability, gatherings are organised to empower our caregivers, and opportunities for our sunflower children to find employment are growing, and professional hands are willing to upskill our team.

Our Purpose? To love those with disabilities and to demonstrate that love as an example of God’s love for His children. Through walking alongside families, collaborating with local infrastructure, and trusting the work of God, we journey with each child and their families to help them live out the wonderful image and purposes for which they were created.

Why Sunflowers? We chose this name because sunflowers gather strength and life by looking up to the sun throughout the day. May the One who cares beyond compare, meet them, even as we serve to provide for their developmental needs.

Ray Notley - a remarkable servant of the gospel

Since 2008, following his graduation with an MDiv from Sydney Missionary & Bible College, Ray has served with Pioneers by meeting, mentoring and mobilising gospel workers to serve peoples of the world yet to hear and understand who the Lord Jesus is and what He accomplished at Calvary. It is impossible to calculate the reach of Ray’s sacrificial service these sixteen years. But God has seen, encouraged, enabled and blessed countless peoples in countless places as a result.

Ray retires from Pioneers at the end of this year, and we will feel his absence even as we rejoice in all God has accomplished in and through him.

Thank you for serving, Ray! Well done! Your legacy will endure!

How Media-to-Movement transformed our ministries

GC Ministries, a project of Pioneers, is dedicated to sharing the gospel, discipling believers, equipping leaders, serving communities, and partnering with local churches to plant churches and multiply movements in Nepal and among the Nepali diaspora. Since Pioneers introduced media-to-movement (MTM) strategies, we’ve experienced unprecedented growth in reaching people with the gospel.

The MTM approach has been a tremendous blessing to our ministries. Even in remote areas and among unreached groups, smartphones are widely used, and social media spans all generations. In Nepal, where openly sharing the gospel is illegal and there is significant pressure from families, communities, and religious groups, social media offers a safe, private space for exploring faith. Social media also provides the largest platform for discovering information and connecting with others. This strategy is useful in closed countries where it’s against the law to publicly share about Jesus.

MTM Nepal team creates gospel-centered videos that address relevant life issues, share stories of transformation, and offer hope. These are posted on social media, where thousands engage with the content. Many seekers reach out to our team, and we guide them, connecting them with disciple-makers in local churches. Through these connections, seekers are introduced to fellowship groups where they can learn and grow in faith. MTM Nepal also partners with local churches to train and encourage leaders to plant churches in nearby villages, ensuring that discipleship remains at the heart of our mission.

Since launching a media-to-movement in Nepal in 2021, the ministry has grown remarkably. Today, we have nearly half a million Facebook page followers, with a reach of 62 million people, 43 million video views, 7.5 million engagements, and 25,000 new contacts. Since 2021, 5,500 people have heard the gospel, 4,500 have professed faith, and 2,000 disciples and leaders have been trained.

Sira's Story

Sira lived a happy life until everything changed. She faced a series of hardships, her health began to decline, and fear took hold of her life. Despite seeking medical help and consulting every known healer, she found no relief. Then, she discovered our Life of Hope Facebook page and connected with the MTM team. After receiving prayer, she experienced complete healing. Sira is now part of our fellowship, actively involved in training, and her life is filled with joy and purpose. Stories like Sira’s are just a glimpse of what God is doing through this ministry. Hundreds of others have similar stories.

The potential to reach more is enormous, but we need additional resources to grow our team and expand training efforts. Mission strategies change with time — empowering local leaders, using social media and technology to their fullest, and building global networks for resources and support. Together, we can fulfill the Great Commission as we await His return.

You, too, can be part of this mission by praying for our ministry, joining us in virtual mission efforts, supporting indigenous missionaries, or embarking on a short-term mission trip, or relocating to directly serve unreached peoples.

Let’s serve His mission together, advancing His Kingdom for His glory!
