STUFF TO DO
WHERE IS PIONEER SQUARE?
RELAX IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS On sunny days Occidental Square Park and Pioneer Park are staffed by helpful guides, and tables and seating are provided in the park along with activities for all ages.
Pioneer Square is at the heart of Historic South Downtown and surrounded by: • the Retail Core to the north, • the Chinatown-International District to the east, • the Stadium District and SODO to the south, • and the Central Waterfront to the west.
GRAB A BITE Pioneer Square is Seattle’s newest foodie hub. Don’t miss the neighborhood’s newest hotspots and old favorites. FIRST THURSDAY ART WALK The nation’s first art walk originated here in Pioneer Square. Browse gallery and studio art every first Thursday of the month. FirstThursdaySeattle.com MARCH TO THE MATCH Join Sounders FC fans in Occidental Square Park for a prematch ritual before each home game. Get there 90-minutes before the game and wear your Sounders gear!
Pioneer Square is served by more modes of transit than anywhere else in the city. It’s easily accessible from Interstate 5 and 90, as well as Highway 99. Even the connection to Sea-Tac International Airport is direct and practical on the Sound Transit Link Light Rail. See the Getting Here section in this guide for more transportation options.
TRAIL TO TREASURE This series of wayside panels call out points of historical interest with plenty of before-and-after photos! Free drop-in summer tours. Trail2Treasure.org
PIONEER SQUARE HISTORY The settlers who shaped the future of Seattle landed in Pioneer Square in 1852 after a hard winter on Alki Beach in West Seattle. Arthur Denny, “Doc” Maynard, and Henry Yesler, whose lumber mill was at the end of Skid Road, were among Seattle’s first and best-known entrepreneurs.
N
In 1889 the Great Seattle Fire devastated Pioneer Square. Undaunted, Seattle’s 31,000 citizens elevated their downtown by a full story and replaced the destroyed neighborhood with beautiful Victorian Romanesque buildings.

Pioneer Square is the heart and soul of Seattle. The Denny Party landed in Pioneer Square in 1852 and named their settlement “Duwamps”. Fellow pioneer, Doc Maynard, convinced the settlers to rename the village “Seattle” to honor his friend and local tribal leader, Chief Sealth. As a result, the Town of Seattle was born.
