MISSING: CONNECTING NODE INTERFACE WITH THE PUBLIC

D Due to it’s long history of worldwide relationships from the era of naval trades, as well as the encouragement for novelty and open-mindedness I would like to locate the ESA Centre in the Netherlands and more preciesly in Amstedam, on Java Island. From urbanistic point of view the concept follows the idea of a waterfront activation, which is ongoing in Amsterdam. I want to position the building visible from the main ferries connecting the South and the North of Amsterdam. When looking for the

site, it was important for me to position the ESA Center prominent in the cities landscape, however due to it’s volumetric requirements at the edge of the central part of the city. The massing itself negotiates between the two edges of the river which are positioned angular to each other and consists out of two main volumes: small dedicated to arrival procedure and the second taking care of the main mind cognition and body training. The other main buildings along the river banks, are the EYE Film Museum, BiM Huis- the Jazz concert hall, and the International Ship Terminal.

My programmatic partner will allow for an interface is the European Space of ESA activites with the Agency. The way the public. ESA works, is a network of distinctive centers, which are concentrating on different aspects of outer space exploration: observation of earth, exploration of outter space, engineereing of related technology, as well as training of the human flying to the space. What is missing however is a one binding node, a Center, which

In the terms of physics, everything in the cosmos is ruled by 4 major forces: the gravity, the electromagnetism, the weak and the strong forces. The one that arouse my curiosity for the most is the electromagnetism, which is a physical phenomena combined out of two physical elements: the electric field and magnetic field. The first deals with the stationary charges, the second with the moving charges. To describe the phenomena, scientist of different disciplines are using the term dipole, which is

an equivalent of magnetic bar and related to two axis based surfaces of revolution.

4 Encouraged by the duality of the programmatic requirement, as well as inspired by the bipolar property of the electromagnetism, I have discovered a geometric construct reflecting the mentioned twofold demand. The further development of the dual - two-

axis-based torus is the “dupin cyclide” , which is a surface of an inverted torus. The key property of it, is the fact that it is one channel surface in two different ways. The property of duality within this geometry let me define it as my geometrical DNA. (MODEL)

Maintaining the dual property I have applied a set of formal studies (MODELS) altering different parameters. My deepest interest was to seek for a form which allows me to combine two separate zones into one combined entity.

In addition to geometrical set of actions, I introduced further figure properties like open and close (with an outlook to my future program). Following, I proliferated the form with my geometrical

DNA among different axis, orientation, as well as various scales (massing and internal level). There are always the doubles out of which a aggregation is composed.

The way I have further architecturally developed the project is the case, that I have the outer shells as primary building layers, the inner shells as definers of interior spaces the big massing is responsible for main body and mind preparation process, whereas the small for the arrival and introduction program The program of the center more in detail. The main program for mind’s cognition is the planetarium and a digital observatory, where as for the mind a neutral buoyancy lab and a human centrifuge.

022_PROKOPowicz PORTFOLIO

Also within the concept of circulation, duality plays an important role. The scientists, who share the knowledge and maintain the center operate more on horizontal level, whereas the participants operate more in vertical direction having visual connection with all elements of the process and participating with the ones mostly needed. The participants circualation is open, wheres the internal paths have restricted access.

The organization of the landscape follows the concept of creating an arrival pier for various sizes and scales of the boats. In the small mass the arrival related program is located - the big auditorium for presentations, as well as general body check. The big mass is responsible for main process.

The concept behind the construction is to create an overall interlocking structure of the outer shells, inner shells and steel structure compound within the circulatory elements. The material is mostly double plated steel structure with additional steel framework in the outer shells. The thickness of the structure varies according to the load bearing requirements.

ESA_Explanation

The concept behind the energy design is an layered composition, with conditioned interiors which are enclosed and climatically not connected with the outer shell. The outer shell encloses the semi open zones and protects from rain, wind and direct sun light, due to many rooms with projections related technology.

The project is a proposal for a potential venue for Cirque du Soleil- the Canadian circus and theatre company, which is famous for its extravagantly choreographed shows. We chose to draw inspiration from the history of the Cirque du Soleil, which started out as a troupe of circus performers staging shows in public spaces and engaging the audience in their acts. In our design we wanted to create a building as a

shelter for performances for ordinary people, as well as for professionals, where everyone has the chance to participate. The building is divided into different parts where the scale of the performance stage as well as the audience spaces interweave and the difference between these two groups blends together.

Proposed for a site at Pier 8 in Brooklyn’s Red Hook district, the building is based on the premise of “watching and being watched”. Large windows are incorporated into the complex curving surfaces, enabling those outside to glimpse the performances taking place. Ideas of balance, and the merging of indoor and outdoor spaces informed the development of the proposed structure, which is formed of shapes

inspired by gömböcs – geometric three-dimensional elements with just one stable point of equilibrium.

Combining these shapes in a variety of configurations creates a structure with a series of different spaces that could be used as performance venues and teaching studios. Thanks to the curves we were able to create various definitions for stage and auditorium space within one surface, as well as incorporating communication zones and, when needed, opening the form toward the public space outside of the building. 01-02: AXONOMETRIC DRAWINGS

A A public zone by the building’s main entrance would accommodate areas for visitors to practice performing, which would also be visible from outside. Professional training spaces would be contained in the voids formed between some of the intersecting shapes, with the surrounding areas designated as public walkways providing views of the performers. The main auditorium would be flanked by

banks of seating and feature an extendable stage that could be used to adapt the space to suit different types of performance.
