Message from the Headmistress It is with great pleasure that I am introducing the 2014/15 edition of “Junior Aquila” to you. It is a publication that we hope will provide you with a flavour of the many activities our girls in Reception to Year 6 have been involved in over the course of the academic year. With examples of the girls’ work and details of visits and events the girls have enjoyed it is a true reflection of the varied curriculum the girls have experienced. I am incredibly proud of all the girls in Pre-Prep and Prep and everything that they have achieved. It is wonderful to see work inspired by trips to the Living Rainforest in Berkshire, the Natural History Museum at Tring, and Waddesdon Manor. The girls have also looked to the past producing artwork inspired by the Ancient Egyptians, the Romans and the Victorians. Role play as characters as diverse as firefighters during the Great Fire of London to aliens visiting from far away planets have helped the girls to see things from different perspectives and develop their own unique views of the world. Team building year group trips to activity centres and the very first Year 6 residential trip to France have also allowed the girls to develop key skills they will use throughout their lives. Above all this year I have been struck by the fantastic effort the girls have put into not only their academic work but also their extra-curricular activities. From perfecting their performances in the Pre-Prep Nativity and Year 3-6 summer drama productions, to raising money for charities or making a difference by taking on a role of responsibility with gusto, each and every girl has demonstrated just what can be achieved, both academically and personally, with effort and determination. I wish all the girls well as they move on to their new challenges in September. Happy reading! Helen Ness-Gifford Headmistress

PRE PREP

Pre-Prep Message from Mrs Rushforth, Head of Pre-Prep

AS THIS ACADEMIC YEAR DRAWS TO A CLOSE I LOOK BACK WITH PRIDE ON ALL THAT HAS BEEN ACHIEVED BY THE PUPILS OF THE PRE-PREP DEPARTMENT. The girls are building upon the thoughts and hopes of Malala Yousafzai by using a voice, a pen and a book in order to make themselves valuable members of the Pipers community. Talents and strengths have been developed through a

wide and balanced curriculum which not only celebrates academic achievements but also the simple acts of kindness, making successful relationships, showing respect and being a good friend. It has been an absolute pleasure to have listened to girls learning to play the violin, viola and the cello. They have sung and acted in an unforgettable performance of “The Raggedy King”, as well as musical concerts and Drama and Dance presentations. They have impressed others with their behaviour and knowledge on numerous trips which have enhanced

their learning and developed their imaginations. A swimming gala and Sports Day have played their part in developing physical abilities. A new thinking skills programme has also helped to develop mental attitudes in a challenging world. I hope the girls will continue to follow in the footsteps of Malala, embrace all the fantastic opportunities which are being offered to them and remember Malala’s words of advice “Let us make our future now and let us make our tomorrow’s dreams a reality”.

International Day

PRE-PREP HAD A FANTASTIC TIME ON INTERNATIONAL DAY THIS YEAR. THEY DRESSED UP IN TRADITIONAL CLOTHING FROM A COUNTRY OF THEIR CHOICE, CREATED FABULOUS PIECES OF ARTWORK INSPIRED BY OTHER COUNTRIES AND LEARNT ABOUT MUSIC FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD. 4

IN JUNE INTREPID EXPLORERS FROM THE PRE-PREP DEPARTMENT VISITED THE LIVING RAINFOREST IN BERKSHIRE. The girls experienced what it would feel like to be live in the rainforest and what animals and plants live there. The girls were particularly interested in the Goeldi’s monkeys, the agoutis, the red-crested turacos and toucans. The group also had the opportunity to go on a treasure hunt to find more animals and plants.

Art Day Towards the end of the Summer Term the girls took part in a special day of art themed activities. Each class created their own group piece using different techniques such as, fingerprinting, wax resist flowers and using ribbon and egg cartons to create a collage. The girls also created individual pieces of fabric flowers, Monet inspired water lily paintings and polystyrene printing blocks which produced a repeating floral pattern.

RECEPTION

Reception Message from Mrs child, reception teacher AS WE REFLECT ON OUR YEAR IN RECEPTION, WE LOOK BACK AT THE START OF OUR LEARNING JOURNEY AND OUR FIRST TOPIC WORK ON “OUR WORLD”. The girls learnt about the equator and as homework had to find out where their parents were born and how to say “Hello” in the language of that country. We had great fun making volcanos using large drink bottles with vinegar and baking powder. Our Topic work moved on to an animal theme in the Spring Term and a visit to the Natural History Museum in Tring gave the girls an opportunity to see many different specimens of animals big and small. One of the highlights for Reception was the hatching of the chicks. The wonder on the faces of all the girls in Pre-Prep as each chick hatches was a real delight to share. We also now have the school chickens in the Pre-Prep garden, which has helped round off our animal theme nicely.

FOR WORLD BO OK DAY IN MARC H RECEPTION GIR LS DRESSED UP IN A CHARACTE R FROM THEIR FA VOURITE BOOK.

One of the girls has said “The igloo is the best playhouse ever”. The project brought all the elements of the year’s curriculum together - from “Our World” and looking at homes and buildings in different countries, to Mathematics and learning how to count. It also was a great way of teaching the girls about building something useful from recycled materials and showing them how by working together really special things can be achieved.

To finish our year we have collected over 500 plastic milk bottles and were able to build an igloo with them.

DURING THE SPRING TERM GIRLS IN RECEPTION WERE TREATED TO A RAINFOREST STORYTELLING SESSION. THE GIRLS CAME DRESSED TO IMPRESS IN THEIR ANIMAL COSTUMES AND THOROUGHLY ENJOYED TIME SPENT IN THE JUNGLE.

Letter to Malala Mrs Ness-Gifford spoke to the girls about Malala Yousafzai. She set the girls a task to find out more about Malala and they discovered interesting facts about her. Most importantly they discovered how Malala believed in the education of women and that a pen, a book and a voice can make a difference in the world. With this in mind Isabella M decided she would like to write to Malala.

YEAR 1

Year 1 Message from Mrs rushforth, year 1 teacher IT HAS BEEN A PRIVILEGE TO HAVE TAUGHT YEAR 1 THIS YEAR. THE GIRLS HAVE BEEN SO INTERESTED AND ENTHUSIASTIC IN EVERYTHING WE HAVE DONE AND IT HAS BEEN A PLEASURE TO HAVE TAUGHT THEM. We have discovered endless facts about a large variety of animals, helped patients in a doll’s hospital, and imagined ourselves as Sleeping Beauty asleep in her own castle after seeing the special paintings by Leon Bakst at Waddesdon Manor. We have investigated materials, compared homes and toys from the past and present as well as experiencing how people washed their clothes before the invention of the washing machine. Plants have been grown and rainforests explored. The girls loved learning about tens and units, money and making their own computations with a wide variety of resources. Technology has been embraced through Beebots, iPADS and a touch screen television, all of which have supported and reinforced the learning in so many areas of the curriculum. The girls have grown emotionally, socially and academically, they have worked well together and I know they will wholeheartedly embrace the challenges and responsibilities that next year will bring.

Sleeping Beauty Paintings In January the girls took a trip to Waddesdon Manor to see the “Sleeping Beauty” paintings by Leon Baskt. When they arrived the girls ascended into one of the turrets of the manor and were taken through the story of “Sleeping Beauty”. The girls had the opportunity to dress up and act the story out as they looked at each painting in the series. Afterwards the girls visited the Manor’s aviary to see the exotic birds, especially the fairy bluebird, which appears in one of the paintings. To conclude their visit the girls completed an activity bringing together all the pictures they had seen and creating their own “Sleeping Beauty” artwork.

When Bob met an alien AFTER READING “MAN ON THE MOON” BY SIMON BARTRAM THE GIRLS TOOK THE STORY FURTHER USING A WELL THOUGHT OUT STORYBOARD, WROTE WHAT HAPPENED IF BOB MET AN ALIEN. Bob arrived in space, suddenly an alien popped out of a crater. Bob was shocked he thought aliens weren’t real. The alien asked if he

could go home with him, Bob said “yes”. The alien then went home with Bob and they had pasta for lunch. The alien ate all the pasta!  MAYA V

It was a very exciting day on the moon because lots of spaceships were coming from Earth, but when Bob turned around there was an alien there. The alien was called Red. Red looked at Bob and they became friends. Bob took Red home in the spaceship.

On the moon Bob was cleaning the rest of the rubbish on the moon and he found an alien. He was shocked how small he was. Bob took the alien in the rocket. When he took him in he bit Bob! Bob threw the alien out of the rocket. He zoomed away and when he got home he found lots of aliens and he ran away from his house forever.  SARAH T

YEAR 2

Year 2 Message from Mrs clare, year 2 teacher AS ANOTHER YEAR ROLLS TOWARDS ITS END, IT IS A GOOD TIME TO REFLECT EVERYTHING WE’VE ACHIEVED.

The Gunpowder Plot

Year 2 is a year where girls begin to mature and take on the responsibilities of being the oldest girls in the Department, something they all embrace. In Year 2 the girls take the lead in being special partners to the younger girls, are responsible for keeping the shed and the library tidy and more recently helping to look after the chickens. If you add the word monitor to the job it suddenly becomes the best job in the world. On top of added responsibility there have been lots of memorable moments including the Grandparents Tea Party where the girls developed their party planning and hosting skills, involvement in the Trench Project, the stunning performance of “The Raggedy King” and re-enacting firefighting 1666 style. We have been on trips to Waddesden Manor to see the Sleeping Beauty paintings, to Watford Synagogue, to Chiltern Open Air Museum and the Living Rainforest. In Year 2 there is also the opportunity for extra-curricular sport and music activities including tennis, swim squad, piano and cello. For the first time Year 2 girls have also been involved in an athletics competition against another school. We are also very proud of the fact that two Year 2 girls took part in swimming galas as part of the Year 3 team on a regular basis. So as you can see life in Year 2 is never dull and the girls are an inspiration to both me, the younger girls and their other teachers.

Great fire of london THIS YEAR THE GIRLS HAVE BEEN LEARNING ABOUT THE GREAT FIRE OF LONDON IN 1666. THEY DISCOVERED HOW THE FIRE SPREAD, WHO SAMUEL PEPYS WAS AND HOW HIS DIARY ABOUT THE FIRE WAS IMPORTANT. THE GIRLS RE-ENACTED PUTTING THE FIRE OUT AND WROTE THEIR OWN EYE WITNESS ACCOUNTS. 3 September 1666, hello my name is Sam. There is fire outside in London, I need to do something. But what shall I do? I know what to do, I will get a bag and put all my precious things in it, and then go and pay £3 so the king puts my house out. Then I will check if my friends are ok and after that I will get a bucket and fire squirter and start fighting the fire. I can see that people are getting tents to live in whilst the fire is in London but I don’t give up, they’re scardey cats.

Hello my name is Sam, I live in London. The house down the street is burning. I’m going to help put it out. When I got out of my house everyone was screaming and church bells were ringing and everyone was going to the River Thames to get water. I was scared. I saw a fire engine, I want to go back home right now. I’m really scared. Now they are blowing up my house, look at all the flames. I’m very scared, I’ll have to go live in a tent whilst they’re putting out the fire.  ISABELLE L

My name is Sam and I live in Pudding Lane. Last night I heard this cracking noise, so I woke up and looked out of the window and there was a huge fire. I screamed, bells rang and I packed my precious things in a cart. I then went to get buckets of water from the river. I went house to house and worked so hard and when I looked at my house it was burned. Finally the fire was out.  EMILIA W

PREP

Prep

Message from Mr leith, head of prep At the entrance to our magnificent new Prep Hall is a piece of artwork that includes a self-portrait of every girl in Prep and a quote that states “High Self-Esteem & High Expectations”. This simple statement has very much set the tone for the last 12 months in the Department and hopefully will continue to do so. In French, the girls worked with Senior School teachers to extend their academic studies, and also enjoyed hosting a French breakfast for parents and performing a nativity production purely in French. This was followed up by the very successful residential trip to France. A visit from the staff of the Science Museum in London gave every girl the chance to experience hands on experiments that included explosions, rockets and slime. The general election in May provided an ideal opportunity for the girls to consider the role of Parliament in our everyday lives. During PSHE lessons

the girls learnt how laws are made and then discussed what laws they would like to introduce themselves. High expectations were very much in evidence during ICT lessons with our most enthusiastic programmers having the opportunity to visit the Google HQ in London and discuss their projects with the Google team. Trips to the Royal Albert Hall and concert evenings ensured that the girls had a platform to showcase their talents and a whole Depatment trip to watch “Ten Pieces” by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, which gave every Prep girl the opportunity to understand the background to classical music. Sporting fixtures, art days, WW1 trench projects, Drama productions and visits by the Police and Fire services have also contributed to making the learning interesting, challenging and relevant to the real world. The girls have embraced these opportunities because they

had the confidence and self-belief to make the connections between what happens in the class room and apply it to everyday life. Nowhere was this more evident, than in the last few weeks of the Summer Term, when the girls once again demonstrated great drive, determination, compassion and creativity to raise a vast amount of money for the “Help for Heroes” charity by setting up their own businesses. In this last activity, I observed everything that makes Pipers such a wonderful and inspiring place to work, as the girls amazed me with their flair for entrepreneurial endeavours and their enthusiasm to share success as a team. A year is a long time in education, and as I look back over the last 12 months, it’s quite amazing to reflect on how much we have managed to squeeze into one academic year. This has only been possible because the girls have the self-esteem to believe they can achieve success and meet the high expectations we have for them.

PREP

Notes from the Prep Captains As Prep Captain, leadership has meant a lot to me this year. I have really enjoyed my role which has included leadership meetings, organising the Prep Captain Challenge, French Breakfast and lots more. As Prep Captain I have given speeches and shown visitors around the school, activities which have helped me to become much more confident. In Year 6 you get more opportunities to take on roles of responsibility. Having the opportunity to take on these roles really helps us develop skills, such as organisation, perseverance and teamwork for the future.

you to the amazing Vice Prep Captains, Josie and Annique, who have assisted me along the way. I wish the next Prep Captain lots of luck and I hope they enjoy it as much as I have. It has been a lovely position to hold.  SOPHIE M, PREP CAPTAIN

I hope I have been a good role model to all the younger girls by being kind and approachable. I would like to say thank

hard work, there have been lots of new skills that I have developed, such as teamwork and confidence. This role has also tested my organisation skills which I am sure will really help me in the future!

Since the start of Year 6 I have had the great job of being Vice Prep Captain which I have truly enjoyed. I have helped and supported the Prep Captain as much as possible and have appreciated facing all the challenges and responsibility of this role. During my time as Vice Prep Captain, Joise and I also managed the “tidy cloakroom” scheme every week, which was so much fun! We have also been to lots of meetings and helped to organise the Prep Captain Challenge.

To conclude, I think that this role has been a great experience and I wish the next Prep Captain and her team luck for next year.

This position has given me a whole new experience, opening up more options for me, and although leadership can be I have enjoyed my time as Vice Prep Captain and Charity Representative. Having these roles of responsibility has made me grow in confidence and believe in myself. I have enjoyed attending leadership meetings and supporting Sophie and Annique. I have also worked with the Prep Forms to help them keep their cloakrooms tidy.

This year I have been given the fantastic opportunity of being Prep Sports Captain and I’ve enjoyed it very much. It has been a delight sharing my love of sports with everyone, although it has been very busy. I am involved in lots of sports; netball, lacrosse, cross country running, triathlon, hockey, swimming, athletics, tennis, rounders and even rugby! However, being Sports Captain is not just about being good at sport; it’s about encouraging others to enjoy sport and always try their best.

lots of fun at the same time. Earlier this year it was a pleasure to take an assembly on sport, I spent a lot of time preparing and I was really pleased with how it went. I think the rest of Prep enjoyed it too. I spoke about determination, never giving up no matter how hard things might be, and most importantly, to always have fun in everything you do.

CHARITY REPRESENTATIVE

Sport has always been a big passion of mine and always will be, so being Sports Captain was a great experience for me. It has been very hectic at times; trying to find time to update the Sports board, decorate it and be creative. It has been a great pleasure to be Sports Captain and I wish the very best of luck to the next Sports Captain and hope they enjoy the position as much as I did, it is a great role.

This year I have set up a new netball club for Year 3 and have really enjoyed seeing the girls’ progress and have

YEAR 3

Year 3

Message from Mrs emery, year 3 teacher Year 3 had a messy start to the year when the staff from the Science Museum in London came to Prep and Year 3 learnt how to make their own slime. In Science, they have also made shadow puppets which they used to perform a story and designed packaging to protect an egg which was dropped from a height. The class have travelled through history and around the world during their time in Year 3. In November they enjoyed completing a variety of activities linked to the World War One Commemorations during the Prep Trench Day and experiencing life in the trenches in the Landau Hall where they were able to see artefacts from the era. In their Art lessons, the girls have studied Egyptian art and made scarab beetles out of clay which were exhibited along with their other artwork as part of the Pipers Art, Design and Textiles Exhibition. In our Topic lessons we learned about life in ancient Greece with the girls

visiting the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. They were treated to a hands-on session led by one of the curators. The girls were amazed by the architecture of the museum itself as well as the age of the exhibits. As part of the Christmas Concert performance the girls demonstrated their knowledge of the celebration of Chinese New Year. The theme was “Festivals around the World” and the girls delighted the audience with their dragon dance. The girls have also learnt over the year about how to keep healthy and stay safe. PC Merriman came in to talk to them about road safety and stranger danger and the girls showcased their knowledge of road safety in their class assembly. Our trip to Hazard Alley Safety Centre in Milton Keynes highlighted the need to stay safe and what to do in an emergency. The class were able to experience making a telephone call to the emergency services and were

Egyptian art and pattern making YEAR 3 HAVE BEEN EXPLORING ASPECTS OF EGYPTIAN ART AND SCARAB BEETLES THIS YEAR. They were inspired to create their own scarab beetle designs using coloured pencils and embellished them with Egyptian patterns. They also developed collagraph blocks based on Egyptian motifs. The collagraph print block is a simplified, cut-paper collage of their chosen pattern, which has then been printed onto paper. Girls then selected a colour palette that was also typical of Egyptian art. YEAR 3

YEAR 4

Year 4

Message from Mrs summers, year 4 teacher THE SUMMER TERM IS DRAWING TO A CLOSE AND IT IS TIME FOR ALL OF US TO REFLECT ON THE SCHOOL YEAR. As I have looked through the list of extra-curricular activities and the events that have taken place, I feel quite dazzled by the wealth of experience. It is always exciting to meet the girls in September when they return with renewed enthusiasm. November brought our WW1 commemoration and the girls made telegrams and poppies to lay on the ground around the trench. It was very moving to see our young people showing such respect for this occasion. Christmas and the winter months seem an age away now but I can remember the sparkle that Year 4 gave to the season with their Christmas Concert and the carol service at Hughenden Church. Year 4 were great ambassadors for the school when we visited the Ashmolean Museum to see and handle some of the artefacts left behind in Romano-British settlements. Their knowledge, curiosity and enthusiasm was outstanding. Another highlight

was the Prep Music Concert when Year 4 performed a complicated and modern rhythmic vocal arrangement. Some girls in Year 4 also had the opportunity to visit the Google offices in London as they had shown such talent in their coding abilities during lessons. There have been

many great sporting occasions this year as well. The girls ran in all weathers, advanced in their knowledge of netball, swum like flying fish and scored many rounders. I know that many of the girls are looking forward to new beginnings and experiences in Year 5. It has been a pleasure to watch them grow and mature throughout the year – I think they are ready!

FOR MY FIRST YEAR AT PIPERS, I HAVE TO GENUINELY SAY THAT I COULD NOT HAVE ASKED FOR A BETTER FORM. From the start, the girls were a delight, they were friendly and they made me feel very welcome. Throughout the year, they were my sunshine during those dull, wet and grey English mornings. There is never a sad morning with my Year 5 girls. I still wonder what they eat for breakfast to be that enthusiastic so early!

Every morning I was amazed how many extra-curricular activities the girls were involved in every day. They are an exceptionally talented group of students with great success in Sport, Drama, Music and beyond. Recently, they performed amazingly well at the St. Teresa’s Athletics Championships where Jessica Q

In Form Time, the girls have always been keen to share ideas during various discussions and always gave 100% when preparing for their Form assemblies. When there were competitions in Prep, all girls wanted to win; I have to admit that it was not only them who showed a competitive streak! I am proud to say that we actually won the curiosity competition thanks to Fern R. When roles of responsibilities were offered to them, they all wanted to get involved; I hope they maintain this attitude when they move to Year 6.

Fairground Raps COME ON EVERYBODY LET’S GO TO THE FAIR, WE’LL HAVE A GREAT TIME WHILE WE ARE THERE. down to the ground. Eating too much feeling sick, lots of sticky apples to lick. Night drawing in it’s getting dark, time to leave the fairground park.

The music was ringing in my ears, the music was playing from the pier. We ate loads and loads and loads of ice-cream, while watching people scream and scream. I’m riding on a bumper car, behind one is a super star. On a rollercoaster, boy with a toy hamster. For lunch we will have fish and chips, now we will buy some bits. When I was on the bumpy ride, I saw my dad and tried to hide. After that he took me home, and left me sitting all alone.

Horses will go round and round while we are spending pound after pound. Children are eating lots of chips while adults are doing lots of flips. We’ll go on big rides and crazy slides. We’ll go upside down and see the whole town. Everybody’s singing la la la while the sheep are going b aba ba. Children are playing hook the duck while the adults are winning out of pure luck. Hope you enjoyed our amazing rap and next time you’ll go CLAP CLAP CLAP. WORD!

My Monster Poem

Boris

The monster who came to town

The monster sat in his tower, scary as usual.

With a squeak like a giant mouse. Boris came bobbing up and down.

The monster hobbled along the cobbly road.

As slowly as a buoy floating on a calm sea.

He knocked on everybody’s doors, but no one answered.

He came closer, his squeak stopping as suddenly as a car halting.

No one answered until he came to the last house. In the house lived a monster expert who was very kind and generous.

Out the door he went, angry as usual. He was a walking volcano, his tongue yellow as orange juice. His teeth pink like candy floss. His lava was hotter than chillis. Super heroes in sight near the monster. Super heroes got shot that day, off the Earth they went. The monster happy not like usual. Back in his tower chilling.

He was a joyful robin on Christmas Day. A crowd of people hurried past us. Boris was alarmingly no longer present. The crowd parted.

Monster awesome as usual.

There was Boris gazing thoughtfully at the chocolate donuts with sprinkles.

 BETHANY W

As I crept up to him, like a cat. Boris knew I was there and sprinted away. I caught him and gave him a nice squeezy hug.

Monster was cold, hungry and thirsty, he asked the monster expert if he could have a hot chocolate because he could smell the pot bubbling in the house. The monster expert said that he would be delighted and the monster settled down to watch TV with a steaming hot chocolate.  ELOISE M

As I squeezed him I said “People are as nice as donuts”

YEAR 6

Year 6

Message from Miss eagles, year 6 teacher I knew that there was something special about Pipers Corner when I first came to the school in September and now I know – it’s the Pipers girls. It is wonderful to be part of such an energetic and interesting class with girls so full of diverse talents. It is amazing to think about how the new girls (including me) fitted so quickly into the Pipers way of life and I can’t quite believe that nearly a whole year has passed since then. IN A 6 DRESSED UP MARCH YEAR .) BOOK DAY IN OK LD BO OR ITE W R UR FO FAVO FROM THEIR CHARACTER

The girls have enjoyed a number of trips and events this year which started in September with a super team building day at Longridge Centre near Marlow. Since then they have managed to squeeze in an enormous amount including the French Nativity and breakfast, Christmas Concert, choreography competition, Art Day, residential trips and Form assemblies. It is lovely to see how the girls have developed in confidence this year both in their approach to their studies, trips and events, and through the leadership opportunities that they have been given. I don’t think that I have ever worked at a school where pupils

are so willing to give up their time so readily and take on responsibilities with such enthusiasm. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the girls take part in these activities and becoming more independent over the year. I am sure that they will all continue to thrive as they move into Year 7 and wish them the very best of luck for their future.

Message from Mrs dollery, year 6 teacher I have had the delight of being the Form Tutor for a second year running for some of the girls who came up from Year 5. It was also lovely to welcome new girls into the school and their families in September. It has been brilliant to watch the girls grow in confidence, maturity and start to develop and refine their leadership skills over the year. They are definitely ready for the greater challenges of the Senior School!

was particularly evident when the girls researched, rehearsed and performed their wonderful assembly on the subject of “Valentine’s Day”. The class ticked all the cross-curricular boxes by including History, ICT, Drama and Modern Foreign Languages into their assembly. I now know how to say “I love you” in eight different languages. In the Summer Term the girls decided to introduce “Piper” the teddy bear who was awarded to the most settled girl for afternoon registration each week. Piper was then allowed out of school on the weekend to spend time with the winning girl’s family, and a quick photo and a short comment was required on what Piper had been up to. From the weekly photographs, Piper clearly had a busy and exciting Term.

I would like to say that Form 6CDy has been the most cohesive and friendly class to date in my Pipers career. There have been exceptionally few arguments for Year 6 girls and they have just gelled as a Form group. This

All the girls in Year 6 have a leadership role and a number of my girls have really stood out in taking and developing their role to the next level. Emma H has been fantastic as Sports’ Captain, alongside Sophie B (Vice Sports Captain) and

Olivia C (Netball Captain). They have worked together to run a Year 3 Netball Club, under the supervision of the Sixth Form girls, they planned drills and small games for the girls to play. Kirsten I successfully organised the Mandeville House Day, which raised money for the NSPCC, Josie T has worked brilliantly as Vice Prep Captain and as the Charity Representative and organised for Tony Harris to come to speak to the girls about overcoming adversity and being determined to challenge yourself. Other important events which must be mentioned are Catriona R performing for the National Youth Ballet in “Swan Lake” at the Waterside Theatre in April, Gina M representing the school in an Equestrian competition, Mia B speaking beautifully in front of the school at our annual Whole School Service on the Terrace and the fantastic Christmas Concert. I wish all the girls the very best when they move up to Year 7.

The unopened box IT WAS A WINDY THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND MEGAN WAS WAITING FOR AARON FOR A WALK. MEGAN WAS A CLEVER GIRL WITH LONG WAVY HAIR. SHE LOVED GOING ON WALKS BECAUSE MEGAN ADORED NATURE. BANG! THE DOOR WAS FLUNG OPEN AND AARON RAN INTO THE HOUSE OUT OF BREATH. “You know you can open the door normally, like a normal person” exclaimed Megan. Aaron hung his head in shame. “Sorry about that, come let’s go.” Said Aaron, trying to change the subject. So they headed off to the beach. The sea took sand away like cancer and the rocks tried to fight but were deflated. Megan and Aaron walked past an extraordinary looking cave. Aaron exclaimed with delight “let’s go and explore!” so off they went into the cave.

The cave was damp and smelled of seaweed. UHG! But there in the middle of the cave was a small box with seaweed draped over it. Megan spotted it and went over to it. “I wonder what this is?” said Megan in curiosity. She lifted the latch and inside was hundreds of books. “OMG” exclaimed Megan, “This is my grandfather, see there is says William Henry King!”, “Come on, pick it up and show your mum.” Aaron replied.

Henry King, Megan’s lost grandfather. Maybe someday you will find a box like Megan and find out something inside. Legend says that whoever finds a box, the box will hold what you want the most. This is the story of Megan Grace King, the girl who found the unopened box.  ISOBEL H

It was dead silence, with nobody to be seen nor heard. The wind was whistling in my ear, like a kettle was ready to be poured into a mug. Each step I took I could hear the crunch and crackle in the snow, like a pork crackling bustling in your mouth. Dragging my sledge in the white, crisp snow, while my family were snug, toasty inside eating bubbly marshmallows.

JUSTINE J

The turkey all snug in its bed, deep in the oven, roasting till it’s golden. Puddings in their cases and present wrapped under the Christmas tree, with the sound of glasses full of sherry clinking and the laughter of people shouting “cheers”. It is all silent again, dead silent. Everyone in bed, when the grandfather clock ticks twelve, when Santa comes. He comes and then goes, waiting till next year arrives. Soon he travels into the dark, cold winter night. 

parliamentary laws DURING THE SPRING TERM GIRLS IN YEAR 5 AND 6 LEARNT ABOUT PARLIAMENT, HOW LAWS ARE MADE AND THE IMPACT THEY HAVE ON SOCIETY. IN FEBRUARY THE GIRLS HAD A SPECIAL VISIT FROM THE RT HON DAVID LIDINGTON MP FOR AYLESBURY. He talked to the girls about what his typical day and week was like as a Member of Parliament and how he was inspired to enter politics in 1992 to try to change things which he felt were wrong in society. To help the girls get a sense of how Parliament works they took a trip to the Houses of Parliament where they

attended a law making workshop and a personal tour of Parliament, with Nicol Stephen, who has a seat in the House of Lords. During their lesson time the girls were tasked with writing letters to Head of Prep, Mr Leith about the laws they would like to introduce to society.

“MY LAW IS THAT ALL CHILDREN IN PRIMARY SCHOOL SHOULD HAVE ONE HOUR OF PE A WEEK. I THINK THIS WILL HELP FUTURE ADULTS BE HEALTHIER.”

“I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD WEAR CYCLE HELMETS. HELMETS REDUCE THE CHANCE OF SERIOUS HEAD DAMAGE IN A CRUSH.”  GRACE S

The Year 6 French Residential trip to Chateau de la Baudonniere FOR THREE DAYS IN THE SUMMER TERM YEAR 6 TRAVELLED TO FRANCE FOR THEIR RESIDENTIAL TRIP TO CHATEAU DE LA BAUDONNIERE IN NORMANDY. As soon as the girls arrived they were given instructions in French and were encouraged to keep this up throughout their stay whenever possible. Activities included canoeing, initiative exercises, climbing, orienteering and a talent show. All the girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the trip helped with their confidence and French speaking.
