An Unexpected Surprise By Russ Ouellette
O
kay, so it wasn’t so unexpected or a surprise. They told me in advance that I would be receiving our “Pipe Man of the Year” award. When you add the fact that I’m the biggest pipe smoker in the office, and I blend our Hearth & Home tobaccos, I guess that eventually I would probably receive this honor, which is only an arbitrary title. Most of all, I think that the main reason that I received this accolade is that I lost a portion of my left leg and had my own personal brush with… well, you know. This is the point where I get on my soapbox. I’ve been fortunate enough to have four wonderful daughters who love and support me and a job that I absolutely love. I get to blend tobaccos and get to be, at pipe shows, the “face” of Pipes and Cigars.com to the attendees. So, of course, I should have been the happiest guy in the world, but I wasn’t, and I didn’t know why. One day this past April, I began to feel ill. I had what I thought was the worst flu bug I had ever caught. I had chills, sweats, no appetite and overall body aches. I did what I always have done for the flu- lots of fluids and ibuprofen. After a week, things didn’t get better, and my daughters pleaded with me to see a doctor. I agreed and went to an urgent care clinic (here comes the BIG stupid part) and saw a doctor for the first time in ten years. The doctor checked me out and looked at my left foot and simply said, “You need to go to the emergency room.” That didn’t do much for my spirits. I drove to the hospital and when they finally saw me, the doctor said that I had a massive infection in my foot (which I couldn’t see) and that aggressive measures were needed. After bloodwork came back, I was informed that I was diabetic, had high cholesterol and high blood pressure. The kicker was that I was going to have to lose toes, a foot, or part of my leg. The alternative was to die, so I chose the less extreme measure. As I was medicated the night before the surgery, the thought occurred to me that when I woke up, I would probably be in the deepest depression of my life. When

they prepped me for surgery, I had a million thoughts, bad ones, running through my head. The surgery, apparently, went well, other than the missing part of my lower left leg, and I woke up feeling…good. It made no sense to me, but I was in good spirits. The doctor explained that they got the infection under control which may have been in my system for years and they stabilized my blood sugar, so the change in my body chemistry may have affected my mood. I had to heal before I could get fitted for a prosthesis, and during that time I learned how to change my life- how to eat better, get in shape and learn good habits. I took my diet and exercise seriously. In the last four months I’ve lost about 45 pounds, going from 5’ 5” and 195 to 150, brought my bad cholesterol and triglycerides down and my good cholesterol up, kept my blood pressure in check and my blood glucose is steady…all just from eating well and working out. I’m back on two feet and doing everything I used to and I’m finally feeling as happy as I should in the face of my overall good fortune. This leads me to my point- I really like mostly all the pipe and cigars smokers I’ve met, and I enjoy the interaction I have with our customers. I wish nothing but the best for all of you, and in the spirit of the holidays and the prospect of a bright and happy new year, let me leave you with this: If things seem to be weighing heavily upon you, you might not be paying enough attention to yourself. See a doctor, do what’s necessary to get healthy and have some fun. I’m well aware that not every day is sunshine and roses and that some misfortune is unavoidable, but we can all make our lives a little better, and maybe help others in the process. Our “Pipe Man of the Year” is, of course, a tongue-in-cheek concept, but I’m glad that I was asked to write this piece so I can take the opportunity to wish everyone well and to let you know that we really think of all of you as more than just a source of income, but as part of a wonderful community that we’re truly happy to be part of. ven though I selected myself for this prestigious award, it is still an honor to be one of 2012's Pipe Men of the Year. All kidding aside, what truly is an honor and a great pleasure in my life is to be able to stand next to Russ. His illness is a reminder to all of us how precious the lives of the friends and family who make our world a little brighter every day. Russ is one of those people who is much more than an employee to me, and his newfound enthusiasm for life is something that has brought much joy into my work and personal life. I wanted to share Russ's story with you this holiday season, it's easy to get caught up in shopping, spending, and giving, but what really matters are the people around us that we care about. I'm grateful to the people in my life who have helped me to achieve success and happiness, and I hope you show your gratitude to the people who have enriched your life by spending a little extra time with them this holiday season. Get together, share a smoke, and celebrate that you're able to be together! Best wishes for a safe, healthy, and happy holiday and 2013!

The Benefits of Boutiques By Travis lord
B
outique cigars have always been around, but they are certainly more prevalent now than they've been at any other time since I've been in the cigar business. When I started, they were more of an afterthought, designed for the super-aficionados who had already smoked all the major brands to death and were looking to branch out even further. From the manufacturer side, they were a way for guys to get started, and eventually build their brand up to being nationally known and widely distributed (see Cusano for a prime example). Now, there are true boutique brands that are just as well-known as many of the iconic brands that have been around for generations. Even your "average" smoker has heard of them and tried them out. Companies like these have chosen to remain small, and while of course like any other company their strategy is designed around remaining profitable, the benefits to both the companies and us as smokers are significant. I smoke a lot of boutique cigars. Not exclusively of course, I want you to come smack me upside the head if I ever put a limit on my smoking that would cause

there are many aspects of boutique cigars that provide the right circumstances for an outstanding cigar to be created. The most glaring is the selection of tobacco. When you're talking about creating a limited edition batch of say, 5,000 cigars, your choice of tobacco all of a sudden becomes vast. You can create a cigar using tobacco that is simply unavailable in anywhere near the quantity required to carry a regularproduction large-scale brand. For example, by the time you're reading this, a release by one of my favorite boutiques, Crowned Heads, that's not even out yet will likely have come and gone. The blend is/was called Four Kicks Mule Kick, and it was made to utilize a small crop of wrapper tobacco that was a little too dark and too strong to be used for the traditional Four Kicks blend. As a boutique, they can get away with using such a small amount of tobacco to create a cigar, and if it's anywhere near as good as the regular Four Kicks or the Headley Grange, there will be some very happy smokers who were lucky enough to get their hands on some. Going hand-in-hand with the advantages of the wider variety of tobacco is the ability for a more unique blend. A major manufacturer who is making millions of cigars needs to appeal

me to exclude any cigar or pipe tobacco, but I do enjoy them quite frequently. Many of my favorite smoking experiences have come over the past 18 months or so, centered around recently released boutique smokes. But why? Are they better than "large production" cigars? What is the reason behind the explosion in popularity of small-batch stogies? For starters, I want to dispense with the "better" and "worse" terminology. The last thing I want to do is start on another myth like the age-old "Cubans are better than anything". There are great Cuban cigars, and there are lousy ones. In the same vein, there are great boutique cigars, and there are lousy ones. A Cuban cigar isn't better just because it's from Cuba, and a boutique cigar isn't better just because it was made only in a quantity of 500 boxes. That said,

to a broad base of customers in order for a brand to be a success. A boutique company needs to appeal to a much smaller range of

smokers to meet profitability, and therefore they can create blends that are very appealing to some of us without worrying that they'll be outside the flavor profile of a majority of the cigar smoking community. Of course that makes selecting a boutique a little more challenging, but chasing that perfect blend is half the fun for me. Much as I enjoy some small batch smokes, there are some downsides. The worst of it for me is finding one that absolutely knocks your socks off, only to disappear forever. The Tres Reynas is a great example for me, I absolutely fell in love with this smoke, but there were only 3,000 boxes made. Those will be snatched up before the ball drops for 2013, and I'll be left savoring the few I've stockpiled before they recede to memory only. There are also some packaging issues, and as I mentioned earlier, many of these blends are very unique, and not everyone is going to love every single one. Price can also be an issue. The methods used to create these cigars are more expensive, and therefore they typically cost more. I think that with cigars, as with many things in life, superior quality is worth paying for, but when you've got a family and a budget that only goes so far, price certainly becomes a factor. Overall, the recent insurgence of boutique cigars is a great thing for all of us smokers. We've got a ton of variety, an unmatched amount of creativity going into the blends, and a slew of extremely passionate folks pouring their souls into making incredibly good cigars. If you haven't stepped outside your comfort zone and given a few a try, I highly recommend doing some research and taking a chance on a boutique stogie that sounds like it'll hit your sweet spot. Variety is the spice of life, and adding some variety into your cigar rotation is always a good thing.

La Duena Petite Lancero #7 By Travis lord
A
s a sucker for Connecticut Broadleaf, this is one I was pretty excited about trying out. Fortunately for me, my sweet job here means that I “have” to do cigar reviews, and I not-so-unwillingly agreed to take this one on. I opted for the Petite Lancero size as it’s the vitola with the smallest ring gauge, I wanted to make sure I maximized the flavor of the wrapper. The La Duena is a beautiful cigar, just pulling it out of the cellophane made my mouth water a little. I got muted aromas of chocolate and earth pre-light, and didn’t waste much time cutting it and firing it up. On the initial puffs I was hit with some heavy chocolate tones, with just a touch of spice, but not the pepper blast I was expecting. Continuing along I got a nice espresso compliment to the chocolate that was the dominant flavor. As I got into the second half, the cigar gained quite a bit of sweetness, no doubt from the Broadleaf. While the initial chocolate flavor was more on the baking-chocolate side, now it’s more

the dark milk chocolate variety with the sweetness meshing in, and it is a welcome evolution of the flavor profile. I always enjoy a cigar the changes and evolves throughout rather than staying on just one note, and this cigar does exactly that, taking me on a full smoking journey. I found the smoke to be quite sophisticated, nothing overwhelming, but very complex and providing a little something for each aspect of the palate. A very satisfying overall flavor experience, with the flavors intermingling in perfect balance. I found quite a bit of strength, I’d put this firmly in the full-bodied category, but despite the strength the retrohale was smooth and easy, no harshness at all. It allowed me to retrohale a large percentage of the smoke and truly let it engulf me. The construction is excellent, perfect burn, and copious amounts of smoke to play with. The easy draw makes this one a pleasure to smoke, just letting you relax and sink all the way into it, letting the troubles of the world melt away like a cloud of smoke. It stayed sweet, cool, and smooth right down
to the nub, and I enjoyed it right down to the final puff when I was forced to put it down due to finger-singing. This was a great smoke, and one I’ll revisit multiple times for sure. Another excellent cigar from My Father who is putting out some of the most exciting blends around, I recommend the La Duena for anyone who enjoys a rich, full-bodied cigar and wants a smoke to encompass their entire palate.

By Russ Ouellette After a paper route and a high school/ college job flipping burgers, working in a tobacco shop was my first real job, as I eventually wound up as the assistant manager of two stores at the age of 20. It was there, in the mid to late seventies, that I learned to love such legendary tobacco blends as Balkan Sobranie Original Smoking Mixture and No. 759, John Cotton’s #1 & 2 Medium and Rattray’s Hal O’ The Wynd. Some are gone, some are different, and I miss the versions I enjoyed back then. But there was one blend that broke my heart when it disappeared- the Celebrated Bengal Slices. The bright aroma and flavor was amazing, and was unique among its peers. I loved opening a new tin and felt pangs of regret when I’d finish the last slice. Then one day, it was gone. I started the Hearth & Home tobaccos about seven and a half years ago, and set about creating more than 60 different blends. Every so often, though, I’d play around trying to capture the essence of Bengal Slices. In all, I’ve probably developed a dozen and a half iterations that just didn’t ring the bell. Now, I’m well aware that there are many who believe that one should let a sleeping dog lie, since it’s nearly impossible to recreate any blend. But haven’t you ever gotten a great meal at a restaurant and then looked up recipes to try to make it at home? Well, why not do the same with a blend that has such great memories? So time and time again I went back to the well. One version would have too much Latakia, the next would have the wrong balance of Orientals, or the varietals weren’t quite right. With everything else I had to do, because this was my personal quest for the Holy Grail, it sat on the back burner, and when I had a few hours here or there, I’d give it another attempt. About a year ago, I felt that the tobaccos and the proportions were pretty close, as memories flooded back when I tried it, but something was still off, and it seemed to me to be less in the taste than the aroma.

I knew that Bengal Slices had a top dressing, so I began trying to figure out the flavor or flavors that they put into the tobacco. After some wild guesses, I decided to use logic (who would have guessed that I had that tool in my shed?). What flavorings could be used in the UK at that time? After I narrowed it down a bit, I started trying each one individually. One would bring in an element that seemed right, but it was just a bit “off ”, and the next would have something that rang true…but not quite. So it was time to start trying combinations of toppings. I took the three most likely candidates and combined them and it was in the ballpark, but one of the three didn’t seem to belong. I tried two together, and came really close. I tweaked the proportions, added it to the tobacco and ran a test batch and was hit by that flood of memories that overwhelm you when you taste or smell something that you haven’t experienced in a long time. I sampled this version to other experienced pipe smokers and they agreed that it was certainly close enough to make it a challenge to tell the difference.

hen I came to work for Habana Premium/Pipes and Cigars.com about 8 years ago, it was partially because I had a background in blending pipe tobaccos. After I had been with the company about 6 months, Scott Bendett, the owner, asked me to put together some blends to sample to our pipe club members. I came up with a half-dozen mixtures of varying types and we had the club members try them. They were overwhelmingly enthusiastic about them, so we began selling them in the store. They took off immediately, and Scott decided that we should put them on the website. After some nice comments on the online forums, they became very popular almost overnight. I was very lucky to have the support needed to get topquality components and a free hand to create more blends. There are more than 30 in the line now, and most are available in both bulk and tins. Some of them, especially Anniversary Kake, Larry’s Blend and Classic Burley Kake have become staples in the cellars of a large number of pipe smokers world-wide.
