Special thanks to Alison Bagley, who assists the orchestra and Symphonic Band and helps with whatever Dr. Pippin and Dr. Strickland asks, sometimes on unfairly short notice. Also special thanks to Connor McNair, librarian for the Northwest Symphony and Mikaela Earl, librarian for the Symphonic Band. They have done a fantastic job making sure all the sheet music needs are taken care of for these ensembles, and we could not do our job making music without them. Dr. Kathryn Strickland is in her second year as the Chair of the Fine and Performing Arts Department, and her sixth year as Director of Athletic Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at Northwest Missouri State University. In addition to her departmental leadership duties, she oversees the Bearcat Marching Band and Northwest Pep Band, and teaches Applied Percussion, Percussion Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and undergraduate music education coursework. During her time at Northwest, the Bearcat Marching Band has seen significant growth (from 135 to 180 members). Her applied students have won the Mid-Missouri Percussive Arts Trophy Contest and been selected for the Missouri All-Collegiate Percussion Ensemble, the Missouri All-Collegiate Concert Band, and the Missouri All-Collegiate Orchestra. Dr. Strickland was also awarded the Missouri Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Fall of 2017, an award presented to one faculty member at each of Missouri’s 4-year institutions. Dr. Strickland has published articles and presented conference clinics and research posters on the topics of instrumental intonation, music student motivation and retention, percussion pedagogy, and instrumental ensemble sight-reading at both the state (Louisiana and Missouri) and National levels, including the NAfME Biennial Conference. She also co-created the RTPTC, or Real-Time Pitch Tracker and Corrector, a computer program designed to teach instrumentalist’s intonation skills via real time auto-tuning. A veteran teacher of 13 years in the public schools of Louisiana, Dr. Strickland served as a board member of the Louisiana Music Educators Association. She is active as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician of marching bands, concert bands, and percussion groups of all ages. Dr. Strickland currently serves as Missouri State Chair for the National Band Association, and is a member of NAfME, MMEA, Phi Beta Mu, CBDNA, and the Percussive Arts Society, in addition to being an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi. Dr. William S. Richardson directs jazz ensembles and teaches trumpet at Northwest Missouri State University, where he has taught since 1999. He serves as Dennis C. Dau Endowed Professor of Music, the first endowed professorship in the institution’s history. A Fulbright Scholar, he was Visiting Professor of Trumpet at the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music in Riga, Latvia, in 2010. A member of the trumpet sections of the Saint Joseph (MO) Symphony Orchestra and the Saint Joseph Big Band, Richardson lives in Maryville with his wife Niki, daughters Sarah and Leah, and dog Pearl (loti stabils genijs). Dr. Richardson is a product of music education in Missouri, having graduated from Lee's Summit High School and participating in Missouri All-State Bands in 1987 and 1988. He holds degrees from Central Missouri State University (BME), Florida State University (MM-Trumpet Performance), and the University of Texas at Austin (DMA-Trumpet Performance). His primary trumpet teachers were Neal Seipp, David Aaberg, Bryan Goff, and Raymond Crisara. Richardson is co-faculty advisor of the Upsilon Chi chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. A member of the International Trumpet Guild, he is a Conn-Selmer artist/clinician, performing Bach Stradivarius, Bach Artisan, and Conn Vintage-One instruments. His affiliation with Northwest Missouri State University has taken him to Austria, China, England, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, and Japan. 3
Mr. Joseph Michael Tomasso is a multi-instrumentalist teaching and performing in the Northwest Missouri area. He has performed with the Omaha Symphony, Saint Joseph Symphony, Richmond Symphony, Gainesville Orchestra and recently been a featured soloist with the Central Missouri Bandmasters Association. In 2017 he toured Europe with the American Chamber winds and can be heard on their most recent album Radix Tyranis (2018). Mr. Tomasso can also be heard as a member of the oboe trio “2X3” and on their respective album, Old, New, Borrowed, Blue (2018). Additionally, he was the first American to win AGIMUS (associazione musicale giovanile musica) Padua International Music Competition (2011), and the first saxophonist to win multiple categories. Mr. Tomasso is currently serving in his second year as an Assistant Professor of Music at Northwest Missouri State. Previously he was a visiting lecturer in saxophone at the University of Florida, and held graduate teaching assistantships at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music and University of North Carolina Greensboro. He holds degrees from the University of Illinios Urbana Champaign, University of North Carolina, University of Florida, and is currently finishing his Doctorate at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. Dr. Robert Pippin is Assistant Professor of Low Brass and Music Education, Director of the Northwest Symphony Orchestra, and is Co-Director of the Northwest Summer Music Camp. A veteran public school educator, Robert taught high school band for thirteen years, while remaining an active performer in Colorado and Wyoming. He was a tenured member of the Fort Collins Symphony, and was in demand as a freelance artist in classical, jazz, and chamber music in the Rocky Mountain Region. Immediately prior to his appointment to Northwest, Robert was Director of The Johns Hopkins University Wind Ensemble, and assistant conductor for the Peabody Wind Ensemble while pursuing the Doctor of Music degree at the Peabody Conservatory. His applied students have been selected to the Missouri All-Collegiate Band, All-Collegiate Orchestra, and have been awarded graduate assistantships. Robert completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Band Conducting at Peabody, studying with Dr. Harlan Parker. While in residency at Peabody, he held the Graduate Assistantship in Wind Conducting, and the Graduate Assistantship in Music Education. He earned a Bachelor of Music Education, and a Master of Music in Conducting from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Robert studied conducting with Dr. J. Steven Moore, Wilfred Schwartz, and Dr. Michael Schaff; and studied low brass with Dr. Robert Brewer. In recent years, Dr. Pippin has been a performer and clinician with bands, orchestras, and jazz ensembles in Colorado, Missouri, Maryland, and Idaho – conducting honor bands, clinics, and adjudication for music events. Robert is co-faculty advisor of the Upsilon Chi chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and is a member of NAfME, MMEA, CBDNA, MoASTA/ASTA, MBA, the Conductors Guild, and Pi Kappa Lambda. Mitchell Martinez is a 21-year-old tenor from Orrick, Missouri. He is a senior vocal music education major who is set to graduate in the spring of 2020. His singing career started in musical theater in 2010 as the Mayor in Meridith Wilson’s The Music Man. From there, he sang in several annual musicals including West Side Story, Little Shop of Horrors, and In the Heights. Mr. Martinez began his classical singing career in 2013 under the tutelage of Jayson Moll. In the remainder of his high school career he would receive multiple superior ratings at MSHAA district and state solo/small ensemble festival, be invited to perform at various venues, and sing as a member of the 2015 MMEA All-State Choir. Currently, Mr. Martinez studies voice with Dr. Stephen Town and choral conducting with Dr. Brian Lanier. In addition, he is conducting with the University Choral on their spring concert, teaching private voice lessons, and is the Music Director and Fraternity Education Officer of ΦΜΑ Sinfonia Fraternity. 4
