Pirates ride 6-game winning streak into Homecoming By Brandon Clark The Pattonville Pirates (6-1) are averaging 36.4 points per game. Every drive has generally felt like a march to the end zone. At the center of the Pirates’ offense has been senior running back Sam Sanderson and quarterback Andre Webb. But the defense has been holding opponents to just 15.2 points per game and that’s where the team is finding most of its success. The Pirates definitely showed what they were capable of last Friday after crushing the Marquette Mustangs. The Mustangs (4-3) came into the game with an explosive offense with elusive quarterback George Williams and 6-foot-4-inch wide receiver Presley Ingram Jr. Williams showed lots of potential but he couldn’t get yardage off the scramble and had plenty of missed connections with his receivers. On his successful runs and options, Williams would on average gain 5 to 10 yards per play. He had the ability to throw the ball deep down the field, but there was only one problem ... Pirates defensive back Aaron Webb and his teammates were there waiting. Aaron Webb is arguably the best defensive player on the Pattonville football team and he is the leader and mentor on the defense as well. “We did well in that game, but definitely not our best,” he said. “There are things we can always improve on, but I was definitely glad we held Marquette to their lowest scoring performance all year.” On the other side of the ball, signal caller Andre Webb and his offensive line were not going to allow the Mustangs’ defense to get off the hook. With a 21-10 lead, Andre Webb opened the third quarter with a 77-yard run to the

Andre Webb is fast, but the offensive line has helped him succeed. Senior lineman DeAndre James said the touchdown was a morale boost for the O-line as they felt more and more drained as the game went on but plays like that pump up the team. “Oh, we actually felt great because that wasn’t our best game as a unit, but to know we have a quarterback that can still find holes and rush for big gains like that is amazing.” Andre Webb, however, saw the run just as any other play. He explained that it’s always a great feeling to score a touchdown, but he had to give the credit back to his offensive line for giving him the hole. The Pirates now face a challenging test
in their Homecoming game match-up as they take on the undefeated Ladue Rams. One of the best teams in Class 4, the Rams (7-0) are averaging 41.7 points per game and holding opponents to just 6.85 points. The latest edition of the high school football media rankings sets up a high-profile game that has been highly anticipated since the beginning of the season. And not only because it’s Homecoming. Pattonville is No. 9 in Class 6 while Ladue comes in ranked No. 2 in Class 4. Both teams finished as runner-ups in the 2017 Missouri state football championships. Pattonville lost 36-35 to Staley on a late 2-point conversion in the Class 5 title game while Ladue lost 14-0 to Webb City in the Class 4 contest.

Steve Smith Head Coach Head coach Steve Smith is entering his 21st season working with the Pirates football team.
Smith started coaching at his alma matter in 1998, and in 2009, he was appointed to the position of head coach. Eight years later, he led Pattonville on an impressive drive to the Missouri Class 5 state championship game where the Pirates lost to Staley High School, 36-35. Smith has been a part of the Pattonville School District since he was a student. In high school, he was an exceptional football player and was named

through a lot to be there. He became an athletic trainer because he said they have the “rare ability” to see a patient’s entire injury process. “From the initial evaluation to return to play, athletic trainers get to be there every step of the way,” he said. Hubbs received his bachelors degree in exercise science from Truman State University and his
the team captain and defensive Player of the Year in 1992. He racked up an impressive list of achievements including being named 1st Team All-State, 1st Team All-Metro, and the Missouri East All-Star Game Team Captain. He left with pride and is honored as one of Pattonville’s Wall of Famers. After Pattonville, he went on to play Division I football at Northern Illinois University and was once again named a team captain and Defensive Player of the Year. He said his biggest achievements as a coach has been “sending kids to college” and “turning boys into men.” He wants people to know that personal accolades mean nothing to him. “What matters is what we do as a team.” Smith is married to his loving wife Chanelle and has three kids: Steven Smith II (12th grade), Kyah Smith (10th grade), and Samiya Smith (4th grade).
masters from Saint Louis University (SLU). While graduating from SLU, he took the board of certification exam and passed, and then applied for his license from the state of Missouri. His graduate classwork was very rigorous as he spent his mornings in classes and his afternoons at various clinical sites around St. Louis. “This didn’t leave much free time in our schedules, especially for having a job, which made it difficult to afford graduate school.” Hubbs came to Pattonville because “it was a great opportunity for me professionally.” He said he heard great things about the district and how the sports medicine program operates at Pattonville. “I was excited to join it and will help it continue to improve.”
