Welcome to Arvidsjaur and Arjeplog! As Mayors of Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur we are very happy to welcome all of you to this year of automotive winter testing! You are important to us, and we very much value the knowledge, expertise and ideas that you bring to our region. You being here benefits the development of our region.
Our part of Sweden has a history of human settlements that dates back at least 10 000 years, to the time when the mountains and valleys saw light for the first time in a long while after the ice age. Hunters and gatherers inhabited the land and laid the foundation to the semi-nomadic indigenous Sámi culture which is present today. Visiting Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur also means visiting Sápmi, the traditional sámi land.
Isak Utsi
Today the lifestyles complement each other as many of us still live life’s which are depending on the nature. We are very proud of our landscapes and to many of us - the lakes, the mountains and the fauna in the area - are close to our hearts. At the same time we represent the forefront of new vehicle technology as a main winter testing capital of the world. As you may know, our municipalities are very large in terms of areal, but Lasse Forsgren. Photo: with few residents. Being few is a challenge when it comes to providing Arvidsjaur municipality schools, elder care, infrastructure and more, as our income only consists of the tax that come from our permanent residents. Your visit is a great contribution to our communities. Thanks to what you bring during your stay here with us, we have more entrepreneurs, more restaurants and hotels than other municipalities of our size. We respect your work ethics and admire the grit you display during your stay. Still, we hope you get some time off to enjoy the northern lights, exercise in our skiing tracks, enjoy our downhill slopes, go for a ride on a snowmobile and to learn more about our culture as well. We would love to hear from you and what you think of your stay here. We do not always have the means to make everything perfect in an instant, but we sure are proud to say that we are professional hosts dedicated to make your time here the most productive and enjoyable as possible. We invite you to share our arctic lifestyle. Welcome! Ica Nära Jäckvik
In February 2020, a brand new store opened in Jäckvik, 61 km west of Arjeplog. Only a short time later, the area was hit by the Corona pandemic and the store got off to a tough start. The well-stocked shop contains all kinds of groceries and a café that is well worth a visit. Maybe an excursion here by snowmobile or car, could be an option?

Important information for visitors in Arjeplog & Arvidsjaur Here are some important information and wishes to visitors in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur municipality, from the local Police and others, with a warm welcome!
REINDEER AND OTHER WILDLIFE
TRAFFIC REGULATIONS
Reindeer herding and wildlife warning signs Wildlife warnings must be taken seriously. Be extra careful at dawn and dusk, that´s when most animals are on the move.
Use your seat belt By law, you must use seat belts in the car, at all times.
In Sweden there are no wild reindeer – all reindeers have an owner.
Be visible In Sweden all vehicles must be driven with dipped headlights, even during the daytime. It´s not allowed to combine dipped headlights and fog lights. When walking outside after nightfall, use reflectors and reflective vests to increase your visibility to others.
Reindeer herding is carried out in areas around both Arvidsjaur and Arjeplog, which means that reindeer can be near to or on the roads. Reindeer tend to walk on the road since it´s easier for them to walk there than in deep snow. Large black plastic bags on the side of the road is an extra warning that there can be reindeer on the road ahead, but it is also to try to keep the reindeer from using the roads.
Respect the speed limits There is a 30 km/h speed limit near schools and kindergartens, and a 50 km/h speed limit in residential areas. Anyone breaking the speed limit increases the risk of an accident and at the same time you risk getting fined or losing your driving license.
Reindeer are herd animals – if you see one, there´s always more. Don´t try to outrun reindeer on the road. Pass them at low speed and be aware that they can change direction rapidly. WARNING
Narrow roads Please drive slowly on narrow roads in the countryside. You can suddenly meet the plough-truck, other vehicles or animals.
Do not walk on tracks made by snowmoblies It is easy to walk on tracks made by snowmobiles, but remember that they can sometimes lead you to open water.
Don´t drink and drive Sweden has zero tolerance for drinking and driving. Not only do you risk causing a lethal accident, you also risk losing your driving licence and facing prison sentence.
Wildlife collision - important to report to 112
Parking Only park where it is allowed and in the driving direction on the right side. Snowmobiles Driving snowmobiles is not allowed in the villages or residential areas, except on marked trails. In some areas driving is forbidden. There is a speed limit of 30 km/h on the trails in Arjeplog and 50 km/h in Arvidsjaur. This is to reduce noise and the risk of accidents. The speed limit outside the residential areas is 70 km/h. Wearing a helmet is a legal requirement. Zero tolerance for alcohol applies to snowmobiles too. Only one minute You are not allowed to leave the engine of your car running idle for more than one minute. Mobile phone in the car It is not allowed to talk in the mobile phone when driving. Winter in Arjeplog & Arvidsjaur 2022
If you accidently have a wildlife collision, it is very
important to report the accident by calling the emergency number 112. To make a report is never penalised, but on the contrary - if you fail to report within four hours, it is considered to be a hit-and-run case which is considered a crime. As well, do not let the animals agonise unnecessarily. Mark the place of accident, by attaching a plastic strap or tape to the closest “plough stick”, i.e. the sticks marking the sides of the road for the plough truck. Make a note of your location. This will really ease the work for those going to search for the injured animal. Any collision with wild life - including elk, reindeer, deer, eagles, bears, wolves and otters must be reported. You can collect special wild life collision straps at the local Police station, to mark the place of accident. 13
Meet Bajar and Christine Bajar Elmazoski, 46 years old, is one of the many persons that have started their lives in another country but ended up in Arjeplog. He is born and raised in Macedonia and after having lived in the south of Sweden for a while, he moved to Arjeplog in 2013 to work as a pizza baker. At the moment, he helps out his partner in her clothing shop and has a mobile food truck in town. He likes Arjeplog a lot and says he can not imagine living anywhere else anymore. He lives here together with his girlfriend and 3 sons. His tip to visitors is to go out and enjoy nature. Whether it is summer or winter, Arjeplog is beautiful all year and you should really take the chance to experience the beauty. - Rent a snowmobile and drive! /Guido van den Berg
Christine Hanselmann, was born and raised in Austria. When she was 19, she moved to Switzerland and four years ago she moved to Norra Näverliden in Arvidsjaur municipality. - Previously, I have only been in Sweden during the winter season and then went back to Switzerland to work as a nurse. Now I live full time in Sweden and work in healthcare. Soon I will have a Swedish test to be able to get a nurse ID here in Sweden as well. - For 22 years, my ex-husband and I have had sled dogs and had tourist activities. I do not do that anymore. Now I only have the dogs for my own sake, but I still rent out a cabin. What's the best thing about living up here? - It is nature and that we have a real winter, says Christine. When I was in Sweden for the first time twenty years ago, I decided to move to Sweden when my Photo: Private children became adults. - Here you can be out in nature and be completely alone. There is not much traffic on the roads either. That was one of the reasons why I wanted to move here and to get more space for the dogs. What do you think those who visit the area should try? - I think they should try to get in touch with the residents and see their real lives. Here there is much less stress and many people work here to have a good life, not for the money. That's a big difference for me. We can sit outside by a fire without having to stress away. Here we also have more spare time and I think that visitors can learn a lot from our lives here, says Christine. 14

The Swedish "Allemansrätt" In Sweden everyone is allowed to roam freely throughout the countryside. This is called “every man’s right”, a right of common or public access. This means that you can walk and camp up to three nights in one spot (with certain restrictions).
Enjoy a peaceful fire in the wild.
• Making fire is allowed only if there is no risk of the fire spreading and not allowed during summer droughts. • Picking wild berries, mushrooms and flowers is allowed, but not if it´s a rare or endangered species; in which case, they are protected by law. • Destroying live trees or any part of them is not allowed. • Taking birds eggs or nests is not allowed.
Pick cloudberries if you visit us in the summer.
• Fishing is only allowed if you have a pass or permit for the specific place where you plan to fish. • You may enter enclosed areas, but make sure you close the gate behind you. The gate may be there to keep animals from getting out – or in. However, you may not go in on the grounds around a private home, which is called “the zone of privacy”. • Finally a crucial responsibility that comes with this right is that you must clean up after yourself.
Ice fishing is a common interest among the locals.
