During Christmas, a family from a small village in Devon visited Arjeplog municipality, and were very satisfied with their stay. They only wished that they had booked two weeks instead of three days. When Shona, Mike and twelve-year-old Kody arrived in Sweden by plane, a rental car was waiting for them. They headed further north to Laisvallby and the Big Bear cabin. - It was like home, Shona says. All comforts and fully equipped kitchen. We had a great Christmas with a decorated tree and everything. - We also experienced different activities and since lake Laisan were frozen, it provided great walks during our stay. On Boxing Day (26th), we went on a guided snowmobile tour in the neighbourhood. We went to the top of mount Niebsourte and saw some stunning views. Then we drove through the woods and saw moose, Shona continues. We had a great experience with great hosts and we hope for next year to be able to stay two weeks and perhaps go mushing and horse-riding in the snow if possible. The family then drove back south and they think that the Swedish roads are fantastic to drive on during the winter. - Not like in England were a small amount of snow brings the country to stand still, Shona claims.

Arjeplog & Arvidsjaur

Welcome to a new winter season in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur! The warm autumn had us waiting very long for the snow, but luckily some colder weather eventually made our lakes freeze over. Smaller lakes mostly have a stable ice cover, but some of the bigger lakes can still be unsafe. I hope you will enjoy the magazine and find some useful information and interesting articles. The magazine will be distributed three times this year, coming issues are on February 7 and March 7.

Welcome to Arjeplog & Arvidsjaur We, the Mayors of Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur, are once again happy to welcome all of you to this year of automotive winter testing! And we want you to know that you are important to us. This area has a long history dating thousands of years back. Here hunters and gatherers lived – coming from east and west - and eventually met people moving north much as a result of what the King of Sweden ordered. We have gone through all kinds of changes, industrially as well as how we lead our lives. Today we look upon ourselves as representing prime test bed of high-tech systems, parts and vehicles and believe that we are the winter testing capitol of the world. You come here and you bring wealth, stories, expertise, inventions and ideas that will benefit the development of our regions. Thanks to you, we have more entrepreneurs, more restaurants and more hotels than other municipalities of our size. As you probably already have noticed, our municipalities (or “kommuner”, as we say) are huge when it comes to area but tiny when it comes to population. This is a challenge as our income consists of the tax that come from permanent residents only, at the same time that we still have to provide schools, elder care, infrastructure, and more. We respect your work ethics and admire the grit you display during your stay with us. Still, we hope that you get some time off to see the northern lights, exercise in our skiing tracks, enjoy our downhill slopes, have some fun on a snowmobile, and to learn more about our culture. When you are in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur, you are also in Sápmi, the land of the indigenous Sámi people that still engage in semi-nomadic reindeer herding and other traditional livelihoods. We would love to hear from you. We do not always have the monetary means to make everything perfect in an instant, but we sure are proud to say that we are professional hosts dedicated to make your time with us the most productive and enjoyable stay possible. We invite you to share our arctic lifestyle. Welcome! Britta Flinkfeldt, Mayor and Chair of the Executive Committee in Arjeplog Sara Lundberg, Mayor and Chair of the Executive Committee in Arvidsjaur 2

VITTJÅKK IS FOR SALE The ski-station Vittjåkk outside Arvidsjaur is for sale. Arvidsjaur kommun wants to sell it to an entreprenuer with ambitions to develop the area. December 31 was deadline for bids, but unfortunately no bids has come in. So now we can just wait and see what´s going to happen.

TOURISM AND HOTEL SCHOOL Hornavanskolan in Arjeplog offers a new program on tourism and hotels since this autumn. The students are positive and hope that after completing the three years of training, they will have great chances for work in their hometown.

GERMAN TELEVISION IN ARVIDSJAUR FOR A VISIT The german TV-channel RTL has been in Arvidsjaur to film about conversion from fossil fuel to green energy. They have visited several facilities, including the district heating plant that has been running since 2004.

Important information for visitors in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur REINDEER AND OTHER WILDLIFE

Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur municipality have made a folder with important information for visitors. Here are some of the guidelines:

Reindeer herding and wildlife warning signs Wildlife warnings must be taken seriously. Be extra careful at dawn and dusk, that´s when most animals are on the move.

TRAFFIC REGULATIONS Use your seat belt By law, you must use seat belts in the car, at all times.

In Sweden there are no wild reindeer – all reindeers have an owner.

Be visible In Sweden all vehicles must be driven with dipped headlights, even during the daytime. It´s not allowed to combine dipped headlights and fog lights. When walking outside after nightfall, use reflectors and reflective vests to increase your visibility to others.

Reindeer herding is carried out in areas around both Arvidsjaur and Arjeplog, which means that reindeer can be near to or on the roads. Reindeer tend to walk on the road since it´s easier for them to walk there than in deep snow. Large black plastic bags on the side of the road is an extra warning that there can be reindeer on the road ahead, but it is also to try to keep the reindeer from using the roads.

Respect the speed limits There is a 30 km/h speed limit near schools and kindergartens, and a 50 km/h speed limit in residential areas. Anyone breaking the speed limit increases the risk of an accident and at the same time you risk getting fined or losing your driving license.

Reindeer are herd animals – if you see one, there´s always more. Don´t try to outrun reindeer on the road. Pass them at low speed and be aware that they can change direction rapidly.

Don´t drink and drive Sweden has zero tolerance for drinking and driving. Not only do you risk causing a lethal accident, you also risk losing your driving licence and facing prison sentence.

Wildlife collision - important to report to 112

Snowmobiles Driving snowmobiles is not allowed in the villages or residential areas, except on marked trails. In some areas driving is forbidden. There is a speed limit of 30 km/h on the trails in Arjeplog and 50 km/h in Arvidsjaur. This is to reduce noise and the risk of accidents. The speed limit outside the residential areas is 70 km/h. Wearing a helmet is a legal requirement. Zero tolerance for alcohol applies to snowmobiles too. Only one minute You are not allowed to leave the engine of your car running idle for more than one minute. Continuing on page 10. 5

If you accidently have a wildlife collision, it is very important to report the accident by calling the emergency number 112. To make a report is never penalised, but on the contrary - if you fail to report within four hours, it is considered to be a hit-and-run case which is considered a crime. As well, do not let the animals agonise unnecessarily. Mark the place of accident, by attaching a plastic strap or tape to the closest “plough stick”, i.e. the sticks marking the sides of the road for the plough truck. Make a note of your location. This will really ease the work for those going to search for the injured animal. Any collision with wild life - including elk, reindeer, deer, eagles, bears, wolves and otters must be reported. You can collect special wild life collision straps at the local Police station, to mark the place of accident.

IGLOOTEL - soon to be opened experience that visitors are offered. Each room is made with the help of large inflatable balloons, covering them with 2-3 meters of snow on the sides and 1-2 meters on top. After about 8-12 hours, depending on the weather, the snow is frozen and the balloon can be moved for construction of the next room. Cables for lighting etc have to be installed bit by bit as the building takes form.

It is plenty of work before the IGLOOTEL is ready for its annual opening in January. As this winter has been extremely late, construction work was delayed. This year’s theme is “The arctic as a transit zone”, and students from the Academy of Crafts and Design Gut Rosenberg (Aachen, Germany) have worked based on themes of migration and population growth around the world.

The first corridor displays egg cells and their growth, then transforming into footprints of modern shoes, as in the steps we take and our paths of migration. Further ahead, footprints meet the floor, symbolizing crossing borders.

Straight after school start in September-October, they begin planning their work. First, they decide the overall theme and then smaller groups develop ideas for different parts of the IGLOOTEL. The first students arrived in Arjeplog early December. In total, 26 students, four interns and a crew of six handymen have worked hands-on with the IGLOOTEL. The interns will stay the whole season to take care of the guests.

In the first Event-IGLOO, you encounter the tree of life. This is where it all began, before splitting up into different religions, nations etc. The lounge is like a giant shaman drum that leads in to the next Event-IGLOO where mountains and valleys are displayed through different depths of patterns like in moving continents. Another cool experience is the room with 360 degree surround screens, showing films.

I got the privilege to visit IGLOOTEL when everything was under construction and am convinced that I will be struck by astonishment when the finished result is presented. The first overnight guests arrive on the 12th of January and the IGLOOTEL opens to the public for guides tours two days later. Walking through the fantastic rooms, you are struck by the amount of work behind the construction and the

- The Aurora Spa Area and the Sleeping-IGLOOs will be completed in the last few days before opening, Christina says. On site Manager Chrstina Pöttker in the icebar with the compass.

Students are working hard with patterns and smoothing the walls inside the igloos. 6

Continuing from the previous page There are two bars, one in the style of a compass and finding your direction or way to navigate, and one where local artist Stina Renberg has made an entire room to put the question of the now ongoing conflict considering the mountain of Nasa in peoples mind. Stina explains that the mountain has a dire history in the area, as it once was used for a silver mine where many workers were from Sapmi. The mountain still carries the environmental burden, even 400 years later. -The water is poisoned with lead and arsenic up there, she says. -Now a new company is on the go, who wishes to mine for quartz on the Norwegian side. Three Swedish Sami villages will be affected, Semisjaur- Njarg, Grans and Svaipa who has their reindeers on these grounds. And this concerns not only the ones that work and live on the land, but all of those who lives in the area, who wishes their children to stay and thrive here.

Sleeping-IGLOO.

- The art shows the link between us and nature, and highlights the environmental disaster that has not yet healed, and the overhanging risk that further harm will be made; and the probability of disturbance of fragile species like the polar fox, ends Stina. Social areas.

Stina Renberg in one of the igloos where her art is shown. - We are connected to nature in ways that the modern man sometimes forgets. The old pine that bends for the wind, changes in shape, but clutches to the ground is a loved part of our landscape, says Stina. 7

Net fishing - an old method to catch fish Sture Sundström loves hunting and fishing. In winter he is using a traditional method of fishing with nets under the ice, a method that can give a great catch. I followed him when he checked his nets. - I put out nets because it is fun to see if I could get some fish. It’s a leisure activity I sometimes engage in, says Sture. Lapplandsmat - food entreprenur Since late September, a new airline company - Nordica - operates from Arvidsjaur Airport and flies the Gällivare-Arvidsjaur-Stockholm route. The airport’s restaurant also has a new provider of food as well as coffee and light meals by the gate. The new restaurant and food entrepreneur is 65degreesnorth, who also own the brands Lapplandsmat and Lapplandshonung. Maria Isaksson, owner of 65degreesnorth, tells us that the company started a few years ago with beekeeping in a village outside of Arvidsjaur. Their bees are Nordic bees and since there are no sprayed fields or large factories that release pollutants, their honey is as organic as possible without being certified.

Their intention is to serve local food and Swedish meats, as far as possible, in the airport restaurant. In addition to beekeeping, catering and running the airport restaurant, the company also organizes training in finding and recognizing edible mushrooms, beekeeping and nature guiding etc. By cooperating with other local companies, they also facilitate “Like a local”, allowing visitors to take part in local genuine activities such as fishing and making traditional breads. In the future, Maria will look into possibilities of further processing, refining and certification of local raw products.
