During her visit to the Arvidsjaur army battalion in January, Crown Princess Victoria was shown various weapons and sensor systems, she tried out how it is to be in the observation site and witnessed winter swimming in ice holes. The Crown Princess also had the opportunity to navigate the terrain, both on snowmobile and with the help of snowshoes. The Armed Forces’ winter unit explained their activities and soldiers and recruits shared their experiences and know-how on how to handle cold climates. Welcome to Arjeplog & Arvidsjaur We, the Mayors of Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur, are once again happy to welcome all of you to this year of automotive winter testing! And we want you to know that you are important to us. This area has a long history dating thousands of years back. Here hunters and gatherers lived – coming from east and west - and eventually met people moving north much as a result of what the King of Sweden ordered. We have gone through all kinds of changes, industrially as well as how we lead our lives. Today we look upon ourselves as representing prime test bed of high-tech systems, parts and vehicles and believe that we are the winter testing capitol of the world. You come here and you bring wealth, stories, expertise, inventions and ideas that will benefit the development of our regions. Thanks to you, we have more entrepreneurs, more restaurants and more hotels than other municipalities of our size. As you probably already have noticed, our municipalities (or “kommuner”, as we say) are huge when it comes to area but tiny when it comes to population. This is a challenge as our income consists of the tax that come from permanent residents only, at the same time that we still have to provide schools, elder care, infrastructure, and more. We respect your work ethics and admire the grit you display during your stay with us. Still, we hope that you get some time off to see the northern lights, exercise in our skiing tracks, enjoy our downhill slopes, have some fun on a snowmobile, and to learn more about our culture. When you are in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur, you are also in Sápmi, the land of the indigenous Sámi people that still engage in semi-nomadic reindeer herding and other traditional livelihoods. We would love to hear from you. We do not always have the monetary means to make everything perfect in an instant, but we sure are proud to say that we are professional hosts dedicated to make your time with us the most productive and enjoyable stay possible. We invite you to share our arctic lifestyle. Welcome! Important information for visitors in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur municipality have made a folder with important information for visitors. Here are some of the guidelines:
REINDEER AND OTHER WILDLIFE Reindeer herding and wildlife warning signs Wildlife warnings must be taken seriously. Be extra careful at dawn and dusk, that´s when most animals are on the move.
TRAFFIC REGULATIONS Use your seat belt By law, you must use seat belts in the car, at all times.
In Sweden there are no wild reindeer – all reindeers have an owner.
Be visible In Sweden all vehicles must be driven with dipped headlights, even during the daytime. It´s not allowed to combine dipped headlights and fog lights. When walking outside after nightfall, use reflectors and reflective vests to increase your visibility to others.
Reindeer herding is carried out in areas around both Arvidsjaur and Arjeplog, which means that reindeer can be near to or on the roads. Reindeer tend to walk on the road since it´s easier for them to walk there than in deep snow. Large black plastic bags on the side of the road is an extra warning that there can be reindeer on the road ahead, but it is also to try to keep the reindeer from using the roads.
Respect the speed limits There is a 30 km/h speed limit near schools and kindergartens, and a 50 km/h speed limit in residential areas. Anyone breaking the speed limit increases the risk of an accident and at the same time you risk getting fined or losing your driving license.
Reindeer are herd animals – if you see one, there´s always more. Don´t try to outrun reindeer on the road. Pass them at low speed and be aware that they can change direction rapidly.
Don´t drink and drive Sweden has zero tolerance for drinking and driving. Not only do you risk causing a lethal accident, you also risk losing your driving licence and facing prison sentence.
Wildlife collision - important to report to 112
Parking Only park where it is allowed and in the driving direction on the right side. Snowmobiles Driving snowmobiles is not allowed in the villages or residential areas, except on marked trails. In some areas driving is forbidden. There is a speed limit of 30 km/h on the trails in Arjeplog and 50 km/h in Arvidsjaur. This is to reduce noise and the risk of accidents. The speed limit outside the residential areas is 70 km/h. Wearing a helmet is a legal requirement. Zero tolerance for alcohol applies to snowmobiles too. Only one minute You are not allowed to leave the engine of your car running idle for more than one minute.
Continuing on page 10. 5
If you accidently have a wildlife collision, it is very important to report the accident by calling the emergency number 112. To make a report is never penalised, but on the contrary - if you fail to report within four hours, it is considered to be a hit-and-run case which is considered a crime. As well, do not let the animals agonise unnecessarily. Mark the place of accident, by attaching a plastic strap or tape to the closest “plough stick”, i.e. the sticks marking the sides of the road for the plough truck. Make a note of your location. This will really ease the work for those going to search for the injured animal. Any collision with wild life - including elk, reindeer, deer, eagles, bears, wolves and otters must be reported. You can collect special wild life collision straps at the local Police station, to mark the place of accident.
This months ”Hot seat” Guido Beyer, 51, Bosch Family: I share my life with my partner Christine and my two children: Franziska, 14 and Max, 20 who spend the weekends with me. Home: We live in an old house in Asperg (a small city nearby Stuttgart), which is always “under modification and restauration”. Company: I work for Bosch. Occupation: Application Engineer. What about my job: I work in a light truck project for more than eight years now. Favourite Food: Man, this is difficult... I love so many things to eat: Indian food is sincerely very high rated, cheese I like very much, steaks off course. Everything that comes from the BBQ...fish.... Now I’m starting to get hungry myself . Right now I’m dreaming of a “Zwiebelrostbraten mit Spätzle” which is a traditional medium fried Beefsteak, topped with a bunch of onions and served with golden Spätzle (the best noodles in the world, by the way) Present car: Volkswagen T4 Multivan, 340 000km. Dream car: An old Mercedes-Benz Vario Truck, rebuilt to a camping van that could carry my motorbikes to the coolest places... What’s important in life? Being authentic is very important for me. Spare time activities: Being out in the nature for hiking. I like this even more since I had a broken leg and be recovered from this. I love riding long motorbike 6
trips in southern Europe or in the Alps. A lot of my spare time is used for things like: maintain things around the house and so on. Would like to have more “quality time” for me. Dreams about the future: I have many dreams, a close one is about doing a big motorbike trip through Himalaya on an Endfield Bullet 500. Motto in life: Live and let live. A place I enjoy being most: Difficult. Right now, I would like to be in Cadaques, a beautiful village in northern Spain, close to the French border and the Pyrenees. A dream trip: I want to travel the west coast of the USA in a camping car, to show this to my girlfriend and kids. Special skills: Learning languages is not so difficult for me. Tell us a secret: Nope! Something I learned from my parents and have passed on to my children: Maybe it’s the music. Yes I was raised with a lot of music (of the sixties and seventies) and my children still have a great sense on that. Something I want to tell to the people in Arjeplog: Within all those years I got to know a bunch of you guys. It has always been a pleasure and I never left with a bad feeling. Thank you for that. I like your open-minded characters, your great nature, your houses and your way of life. And to be mentioned on high priority: Your moose roast beef. Looking forward to be back!

Arjeplog’s 15th film festival
Facinating facts about Arjeplog
The film festival in Arjeplog is one of the most important local highlights of the year. It now celebrates its fifteenth year anniversary and is visited by actors, directors and others from a selection of Swedish films The film festival “Faith, Film & Love” has a unique approach to open up for dialogue around film and life issues. Each film is followed by open seminars where the audience can meet film crew and actors to talk about the film, but also relate to more philosophical issues. This kind of meeting has been greatly appreciated by residents and by many film guests over the years. A former film festival hostess and renowned actress Maria Lundqvist coined an expression: - “Arjeplog’s film festival is perhaps Sweden’s smallest film festival, but it is one of the world’s finest.” The fifteenth film festival is opening Friday February 8 at 17:30 with a slideshow and a ceremony in the market square and closes Sunday February 10 at18:30 with a special festival concert in the church. In Sweden everyone is allowed to roam freely throughout the countryside. This is called “every man’s right”, a right of common or public access. This means that you can walk and camp up to three nights in one spot (with certain restrictions). • Making fire is allowed only if there is no risk of the fire spreading and not allowed during summer droughts. • Picking wild berries, mushrooms and flowers is allowed, but not if it´s a rare or endangered species; in which case, they are protected by law. • Destroying live trees or any part of them is not allowed.

• Taking birds eggs or nests is not allowed. • Fishing is only allowed if you have a pass or permit for the specific place where you plan to fish. For more information, contact the Tourist Information office.
TESTING FACILITIES for rent Both short-term & long-term
• You may enter enclosed areas, but make sure you close the gate behind you. The gate may be there to keep animals from getting our – or in. However, you may not go in on the grounds around a private home, which is called “the zone of privacy”.

Talk a walk in the Where to Eat & Drink sourrondings in Arvidsjaur!
Airport restaurant
Monday – Friday: 10.00 - 16.00
Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur offer many great and beautiful places for walking. Even in winter, you can enjoy nice walks, for example by following snowmobile tracks through the forest or just along pavements in the residential areas. However, do not walk on the ski tracks. They are tempting for evening walks as they are illuminated, but pedestrians destroy the ski tracks and cause a risk for collisions.

For the first layer of clothing close to the skin, wool is a good choice. It keeps warm in cold temperatures and has a cooling effect when you get warm. Synthetic materials don’t work quite as well as wool, as they are not as adaptive to changes in temperature.

Dressed for winter You don’t need survival clothing to handle the arctic climate, but good warm clothing is essential to enjoy your stay in Lapland in winter. Here is a small guide for smart winter dressing.
Where to Eat & Drink in Arjeplog!
Over your first layer, wear a thin wind-resistant pair of trousers and a thicker sweater helps. For very cold temperatures, like -15 or below, you need a pair of ski or cover pants/skirt and a warm jacket and a thicker wool or double layer hat of some kind. For mittens and gloves, a nice warm inside insulation and a wind-resistant cover helps keeping your hands warm. Cotton socks are not functional in winter, you need a wool or hiking type of sock that can transport away the moisture. An extra sock is great if your shoes are spacious enough, and even a third layer of socks when it is down to -25 or below. A wool felt sole is important, you find different varieties in the local stores. In addition to this, a buff or scarf is nice to help preserve the heat and protect the face. Remember that it all depends on how frozen you are and how used you are to the cold. A general tip is to dress in many layers, which makes it easy to regulate the temperature between inside and outside, between activity and standstill. 11
