Making the perfect track
A winter like this, with so much snow - how is it possible to create and maintain good ice tracks? The guys preparing the tracks at Arjeplog Test Management think it is totally doable. - But we need to spend a lot more time on track preparation than usual. It is the time spent out on the tracks that make the difference, explains Peter Nilsson. - This winter has been extreme, says Pelle Sundström. But we still managed to get good tracks in the end. - A few years ago, some of us attended a seminar at Luleå Tekniska Universitet and learnt that ice can grow about 0,1mm per hour and minus degree, so that would add up to about 25 mm per day at -10 degrees, explains Billy Fjellström. With years of practical experience, the guys att Arjeplog Test Management (ATM) prepare ice tracks for car testing every winter. This year they work on two lakes - Ullak and Uddjaur making tracks for event companies. On lake Uddjaur, the tracks are identical with famous racing tracks such as Nürburgring, Silverstone and Circuit Paul Ricard. So, what is the secret behind finishing tracks early on in the season? - We spend hours and hours every day packing the snow, so that when we eventually can start the final track preparation, we scrape and clear excess snow. As we say, no tracks are made in the staff room…
This year, the customers for lake Ullak arrived by new year’s, and the tracks were done in time. At lake Uddjaur, the first customers started dropping in around the 5th of January, by which time we had finished most of the tracks. The last track is now under completion and this is why we have borrowed a new, small tractor, to see if it is fit for the job. When the ice is 10 cm thick, they begin by running a snow mobile with a packing roll behind. When the ice has doubled in thickness (20 cm), small tractors can run on it. - That’s what works best for us. Others do differently and don’t use small tractors at all - they wait until the ice has built to a thickness that can carry larger tractors. - It is really important to keep the tracks free from snow. Just one cm of snow can isolate the growth up to 90%. Normally, the snow itself does not compose the biggest problem, it is strong winds that really complicate our job to keep the tracks clean, says Billy. Comment from the ATM customer Lapland Ice Driving, Eric Gallardo:: ”It’s common knowledge that the very large quantities of snow which fell in December were a major constraint to all the “ice track builders” as far as construction of the circuits was concerned. The ATM team were not defeated however, and applied virtually most of their resources to the Lapland Ice Driving infrastructure. This was really ”roman work”, and as a result we were able to receive our first visitors on January 5th as planned. Almost 50% of our infrastructure was open and in perfect condition from the first day, which bearing in mind the meteorological conditions were no mean feat!”

Family My wonderful wife and three wonderful kids, two girls and one boy.
Future hopes To get Laisvall restaurant going and establish a solid catering business with good flow and be the obvious choice for food and service for businesses and individuals.
Home Born in Skåne but home for me is Arjeplog since 7 years back.
The best place to be Is behind the wheel on any car. Then I relax and just think about driving.
Job Operation Manager at the restaurant at StarLakeCatering - Laisdalen Hotel.
Special skills To find solutions and fix things oddly. As well as making food out of nothing.
Best thing with my job is when you are so close to having too much, but still can handle it and having satisfied guests. Working in a restaurant is not a job it’s more a lifestyle. You must be a bit special to cope with it and you must have it in the blood.
What do you think that other people says or think about you A lot and everything is true
Spare time activities The free time you can get within the restaurant world is spent with the family or in the garage where I also enjoy being well.
Important in life The family and work. And I should be honest, the family is probably neglected because of the profession I have, unfortunately.
Favourite food Simply what is cooked here at home. When family is gone, it is pasta, bacon, cheese - a lot of cheese - in the same pot, saving a plate.
Tell us something no-one knows I have a tattoo in the neck that says “the fucking chef ”.
Motto What does not kill you makes you harder (has it tattooed on the right arm).

What can you improve about yourself Yes, that’s a lot that I can improve with myself and I work on it on a daily basis.
Dream destination The coldest hole on earth but the family does not want to follow me there, so instead I choose the Bahamas.
Imagine drifting at more than 200 km/h in total safety round an F1 circuit ... ... reproduced full-scale on a frozen lake,
behind the wheel of a high-powered sports car, under the Northern Lights of Swedish Lapland. Welcome to Lapland Ice Driving.

For a good cause: RED January Julie Allan works for Jaguar Land Rover and has been in Arjeplog earlier this winter. Despite the cold and a heavy work load, she has found time to exercise for a good cause. “I signed up for ‘RED January’ by the end of December. It is a fundraising campaign for a UK mental health charity called ‘Mind’. The goal is to get active every day throughout the month of January. ‘RED’ means Run Every Day. The aim is to raise awareness for mental health issues, opening up for discussion on the positive impact that exercise can have on a person’s mental health, while in turn raising money for the charity. The main aim for me personally is
to make mental health more of a mainstream topic. We freely discuss having a sore throat or a knee injury but if we are experiencing any mental health issues we are much more hesitant to discuss it with friends, family and medical professionals. It was certainly more challenging to find the time for running in Sweden due to the long working days. However, this is when taking time to ensure I did some exercise was most important, and time to prioritise my well-being and relax after a physically and mentally challenging day. I certainly feel that I have gained a lot from this challenge. As well as becoming physically fitter, it has had great positive effects on my ability to manage stress and teaching me to prioritise my health and well-being despite a busy daily schedule.” http://www.runeverydayjanuary.com 5

Important information
Stop to let pedestrians cross Parents in Arjeplog have contacted the local Police on several occasions, saying that it has become dangerous for their children to walk to school via the pedestrian crossing by Slagnäsvägen, close to the turning up the hill to Hotel Silverhatten. According to Swedish law, you must stop to by pedestrian crossings to let people pass. Violating this law could lead to a 3 000 SEK fine. - It would be very sad to end up with an accident, says police officer Tina Hallin. So, we ask drivers to slow down to a halt and let pedestrians pass safely at every pedestrian crossing.
Parking in Arjeplog The important traffic sign that states that only vehicles with handicap permission can park, is often neglected. Especially outside Sparbanken/ Systembolaget and Apoteket. Both on Storgatan. Even the sidewalk outside Active North Gym is forbidden to park on like any other sidewalks. It’s also forbidden to park behind Coop Konsum during certain hours. - Fines of SEK 800 will be handed out to those who park in the wrong place. Please pay attention to the signs, says police officer Anders Holmlund.
Holding a mobile phone in your hand whilst driving is prohibited On 1 February 2018, the Traffic Regulation concerning mobile phone use in the car was amended and the formulation has now been sharpened. The previous formulation was prohibiting the use of mobile phones or GPS equipment in a way that made you inattentive and dangerous in traffic. With the new writing, you may not use your mobile phone or other communication equipment if you hold it in your hand when driving a motorised vehicle. The rule is for protecting you and others in your environment. Violating this mobile phone prohibition can lead to a fine and losing your driving license. Read more: transportstyrelsen.se
