I used to lived in Farmington Hills which is close to Detroit when I was a child, but I didn't know much about the situation of Detroit. I wanted to consider about the region of my second hometown. This is my diploma project of 8mile road and for Detroit.

8mile road

The city called Detroit is in the state of Michigan, USA. The automobile industry has developed rapidly as a result of the genius of Henry Ford being born with Michigan state with rich resources back. About 60% of Detroit citizens engaged in automobile-related work, including parts enterprises and iron and steel industry, etc., it is not an exaggeration to say that the automobile industry was all of the people living here. However in 1967 the Detroit city was devastated due to various factors such as black people 's riot, population outskirts, automobile industry' s obliteration. For twenty years the time in this city has stopped. Finally on July 18, 2013, the city of Detroit will financially collapse. However, financial collapse was the beginning of rebirth. Citizen-led actions are occurring more and more in Detroit while the administrative office is watching with fingers. It is chosen as the startup place for people who want to start something. "The city where something changes as I am. "Detroit began to move toward rebuilding while exploring the shape of the city.

There is a boundary line "8 mile road" in Detroit. This is the boundary line between Wayne's county and Oakland county located in the north. It is a road symbolizing a clear division of living of the former Detroit citizen "Caucasian" who moved to the suburbs and the current Detroit citizen "black people" who had only to remain in Detroit. This symbolic boundary line is made by history, and it will be a big mental barrier after the reconstruction has progressed. Many startups have transformed the spirit of "manufacturing" inherited from the automobile industry. It may be that the spirit of "manufacturing" nurtured in such days is engraved deeply as DNA. There are high walls, but there are citizens that inherit the same spirituality on both sides of this borderline. I began to feel that there is a power to revive the landscape of this past boundary line.

â– Program

Categorize various activities overflowing in the city and create a flow for regeneration by circulating it under the circumstances of the city. By grouping them into three elements that traditionally constitute a city, connect two areas and trigger a shift of the boundary line to the urban axis.

Convert the boundary line by citizen's activities and architecture, and bring former scenery back.

By listing the startups currently being done in Detroit, classifying and typing it, I aim to draw up the trend of the demands that the activity in the town now has. I consider the problems that the city has as a request of the whole city, and link the activity of the citizen in response to various problems and to circulate. After categorizing the two axes of activity demands and requirement of city, converge it into three types of architecture with different scales.

1. Vocational training facility × Church

2. Residence × Road side shop

3. Bus terminal × Plaza

â– Method of dividing the cost The 8 mile road, which is a symbolic boundary line, lies between the Wayne county and theOakland county, and its jurisdiction is not Michigan State. In this proposal, by inserting a part of the building into the 8 mile road, it is possible to leave a part of the construction cost to the state of Michigan and disperse it.

â– School as a vocational training facility This architecture is the beginning place. At the root of the deterioration of security, there is a poverty problem, and furthermore it follows that employment problem due to the absence of work. Currently in the center of Detroit, the people who came from the other area because of the cheapness of the vacant building, have started various businesses, and employment opportunities are on the rise. This facility is a vocational training center to make it possible to people join the flow of city trend.

â– Raise land price, change boundary by promenade There is now a movement in Detroit to convert a lot of empty lands to farmland. On the other hand, there are citizens who do activities to increase land prices by long-term eyes by afforestation. This classroom is a place where its citizens lead the education of their know-how. Citizens which receiving vocational training, help this activity as a part of their training. Land prices are raised as a place of production by agricultural crops, and due to the growth of afforestation this classroom gradually overflows with greenery. Plantation along the 8 mile will restore the landscape, create a shaft as a promenade, and will be the opportunity to switch the boundary to the urban axis.

â– Symbolic church There is a church as one of the few things that continues to function in devastated Detroit city. This church is on the boundary as a metaphor of a place without hierarchy and discrimination, bring a part of bridge into the internal space, also arch of the structure drops soft light. This church is set as a place where the citizens of the city and the suburbs crowd into one space, as a place to melt the boundaries on the extremely small scale in the city of community.

2. Residence × Road side shop

â– Reform of roadside shop The roadside shop is a building type that first faces the boundary line of 8 mile road. This roadside shop which can be read as "the facade of the city". However, it has become ruined by the decline of the city, and becoming one factor which gives bad impression to the suburbs. Housing behind the roadside shop. Reform with maintaining this composition.

8mile road Shops Residence

â– Make it play as a market Therefore I set the roadside shop, which is a facade, as the location of the startup presently occurring in Detroit city. In a way it functions as a "place of expression of identity" in this city, and it can be a shake to the spirituality common to citizens living in the suburbs. A number of start-ups transform the boundaries into new markets, while creating opportunities for people going to vocational training facilities, the expansion scenery reflects the flow towards the vibrant revitalization of the city.

■ To possess space While the ruins increase in the city, new homes are never created, and the lack of houses in the poor is getting worse. Therefore, in addition to offering housing cheaply, I also considered a system that can collect loans. This building permits the overflowing of the store to the residential side by having void for extension added to the residential core. As a result, the residential side can receive the lease rent of the space, and a win-win relationship is created between the residents and the store side.

-2F Plan-

■ Updateability and scrap utilization This core, which is made as one unit in precast, can infinitely array and duplicate, is low cost and has high updatability. In addition, effectively utilize the large amount of waste materials born by advancing dismantling of empty houses in the extension part. Waste found at the bus terminal will be utilized in this extension. Because five cores are replicated as one unit, the method of utilizing waste materials and the knowhow of remodeling and rebuilding are more likely to be shared by the one unit community, and new relationships of shops to residents, residents to residents will born.

×

-3F Plan-

■ Guide by the cruciform steel The cruciform steel frame which is surrounded by the void for expansion is a structure body and plays a role of guide for expansion. This cruciform steel frame gives vision for the expansion of walls and slabs and works as a light deterrent for expansion and remodeling so that it is possible to prevent destruction of the landscape by excessive expansion and keep a certain order.

■Connect places by bus A young man launched a bus company named "Detroit Bus Company". Companies that started in 2011 currently have six buses, offer a fee-based bus service and provide services to safely send children to school in poor city. Eventually, he intend to provide services that connect the city and the airport, and carry unemployed people to work interviews. This bus is a symbol of rebuilding, the light of hope for people in the city who can not possess a car at present, when public transportation is paralyzed. I plan a bus terminal for『Detroit Bus Company.

â– Perform as plaza for citizen In designing the bus terminal, I thought that the Rotary space could be interpreted as a city square. By the large staircase, we connect the suburbs with the city with a large area and connect the boundary line with a different method from the bridge of vocational training facilities. On the night when the bus stops operating, various events are held as a place to express the activities in the startup, and the big stairs are converted to audience seats surrounding the stage. Activities carried out on the boundary gradually melt the boundary line and become an opportunity to switch to the central location of the city to the urban axis.

â– Reuse of waste materials There is a cracked window theory. It is to accelerate deterioration of security by neglecting the state where the window of the building is broken. In Detroit, movement to dismantle such empty house has started, and the vacant land born there is used for activities to convert to farmland. And there is a startup that finds value in waste materials born at the time of dismantling and converts it to DIY material. In this place, things carefully selected by the citizen as sommelier will be carried away after the dismantling, which normally does not see the light of day. Sommelier provides recipes for the use of waste materials to people in the suburbs.

Detroit hits a considerable amount of snowfall in the winter. The big staircase of this square catches the snow, converts to the water, and provides to the activity of the farmland which requires a lot of water. Currently the water charges of Detroit water and sewer that service 40% of the population of Michigan State are expensive for people in the city, and movements such as privatization and proposal for new construction of waterworks bureaus are beginning. In the summer, this large staircase and the plaza will accumulate the heat received, and by releasing it in the winter, it will capture the melting water and provide it. By utilizing this system, the initial cost is a bit expensive but the running cost is extremely cheap, so it is considered that it is possible to recover the cost in reality by targeting the city and its surroundings.

History of the city will be succeeded by this flow line connecting the suburbs and the city, even in the future where the revival has progressed and the reconstruction of the city is completed. I entrusted the memorial property required for the plaza with this architecture and bus, and aimed at positioning as a symbolic plaza space in the city.

When it was a really difficult situation, there is not much that an architect can do. Doubt about the function of the architect has increased in my past four years. Whenever I see such a situation, what I fell brilliant is people who are trying to manage that situation somehow. Even if the architecture can not confront the administration, it can promote "the power of citizens" and eventually nurture as "Civic Pride". I think that it would be nice if architecture could fulfill such a role.

â– Site feature There is a residential area nearby and academic located on the hill which are reclamated. Junior high school and high school exists top of the hill and the elementary school is stand close by the hill. There is a gate at the entrance and get the impression that separated from surroundings. But that is the feature of private school.

â– Academic component Academic is consisted of monastery , church , kindergarten , elementary school , junior high school and high school. "Akenohoshi-gakuen" is a Christian missionary school and provides a unified lower and upper secondary school education. I attended this academic from kindergarten to elementary school. Incidentally , my sister attended this academic from kindergarten to high school.

■ What's Christian missionary school A Christian school is a school run on Christian principles or by a Christian organization. The nature of Christian schools varies enormously from country to country, according to the religious, educational, and political cultures. In some countries, there is a strict separation of church and state, so all religious schools are private; in others, there is an established church whose teachings form an integral part of the state-operated educational system; in yet others, the state subsidizes religious schools of various denominations. Before designing a christian missionary school, I investigated about the missionary school's educational ideal and the feature of an architecture.

Architecture: Most of the types of school architecture incidents church to school building. Many school uses round arch window, triangle roof design but the internal space are extremely conventional.

Ideal

: The main purpose is to lear n about polite, heartiness, service mind, preciousness dignity of life through Christianity. Religious education is not for encourage the faith but way to learn about moral sence.

â– Issue and Proposal

-Superfcial copyAfter investigation of missionary school, I found that the most of school building's appearance are copy of Gothic or Romanesque architecture. I felt it is really halfway done and interior spaces are specifically common.

-Direct interior spaceTry to make a school which can inspire the spirituality of children by directing interior space dramatically. Design architecture as children can feel the religiousness gradually as they spending on their time.

-Remote special placeChurch is far from school building so its existence is very very special place. Therefore it become estranged from children with no religious belief.

-Lower the start-up hurdlesChildren can feel that they are studying at Chrisist missionary school potentially by inserting church into school building. This have an effect on lower the start-up hurdles about religion to children with no religious belief.

■ Collect elements from church Collect elements which compose church and insert associated images into elementary school space.

â– Design code Many school building of Chrisist missionary school uses round arch window. I wanted to change round arch into more flow, gentle shape, and not superfcial but the space component.

design opening

structure & design code

The design code "Round arch" which has strong religious atmosphere, still leaving its elements but change into shape which is friendly for children. In addition, use that shape as a design code and structure to shake itself free from imitation architecture. Therefore I used catenary arch to compose space. I analyzed catenary arch which Antoni Gaudi used and change into a design code which compose Chrisist missionary school for children.

â– Into the physical memory

This is a classroom which catnary arch links to children's physical growth. The wall of lower grades classroom gets bigger in high along a form of catenary arch. Moreover, the difference of distance sense to the archtop leaves memory of arch gently to children a

-Into daily life-

â– Relation of classroom and church Classroom is a place where children spend most of their time in school life, so I thought what is the good relationship between classroom and church. Not make relationship between classroom and church directly but children can see figure of nun to go to church and this have an effect on l ower the start-up hurdles. Involvement which is not direct is important, and there is a "look" and "seen" relationship between nun and children.

â– Relation between high school and hill Junior high school and high school exists top of the hill and the elementary school is stand close by the hill. In addition, there is a kindergaten in west of academy. I thought the catenary arch can be the factor to give a sense of unity to the academy. In that time, using hill and catenary arch to make a top lights and made a directed space acted in concert with hill.

This church is not gaudy, but children can feel the grace at church on a daily basis. I thought modest gimmick is important than making a exaggerate church.

Doing religious education is rather tabooed in Japan. Religion can be the negative thing easily for people who believe in any particular religion. Not to hate but meet halfway is the first step Japan have to embark. I desire this school cause a stir to make that step.

■ What's 9m × 9m × 9m ? "Design house and carry out study of light" is theme of this building. However, it must be designed in those three rules. ・Design in minimum operation ・It must be consist of only horizontal or vertical slab and wall ・Light and shadow must have maximum effect to space You have to make the plan, section and elevation in beautiful composition with following those three rules. It was very difficult to make beautiful space in the qualified space which is 9m cube, without bankruptcy. But because of two month which I spend to this architecture training, I become able to think the architecture in beautiful composition, and able to get the idea of attractive space very quickly.I also get the ideas of many patterns of window which can get the sun lights effectively. It become very important part of my architecutual thinking.

â– Making warm dark spots This lighting is an antithesis against the modern, too bright city. It creates a dark spot by causing the shade itself of a conventional pendant light to emit outward. In order to create a comfortable dark spot, the building is also required to respond, and it has potentials beyond lighting. By using shape memorized polymer, you can freely change the shade and it is possible to create a dark spot suitable for that person.

■ Theme " 源 " Associated with the 源 and used as a hint: life, the beginning of things, energy, the moment when the phenomenon occurs, water, root of various changes....... etc

■ Equipment which exaggerate " 源 " of place I picked up the keywords "life" and "water" that are reminiscent of the source and started the installation. Thinking through watching through "water" I thought that the element of the forest which is talked about was gradually exaggerated and I could make a device to express the "life" of the narrative forest.

Let one unit support the pool of water with four pillars and a foundation. Make a combination of square and rectangle as a basic unit. Furthermore, it gives 3 level differences according to the object, and aims at change of appearance by distance. The time allowed to install the installation is only one day. We carried it in precast, installed it in the place plotted beforehand and quickly proceeded the installation.
