FLUID MAGAZINE I www.pirtek.com.au
WELCOME Welcome to 2014. Following on from a year that featured much change in our business, we’ve entered 2014 very strongly and you’ll see more of that not only in this issue of FLUID Magazine, but in the months to come. The steps we’ve gone to build the brand presence of PIRTEK around Australia we believe is starting to show dividends, but much of that is only the beginning of what you will see throughout this year. Excitingly, we have recently announced a long term extension to the partnership with Japanese earthmoving giant, Komatsu. Although a global brand, Komatsu has had a strong presence in Australia for nearly 50 years and is at the forefront of implementing new, environmentally efficient products. Like us, it works closely with the community in Australia and around the world on a number of projects. The PIRTEK Wander Goals program with the Western Sydney Wanderers continues to do great things for the community, at the time I write this it has hit $22,000 in donations for the Peter Duncan Neurosciences Ward at Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital. For each goal scored by the Wanderers, we donate $1,000 to the Hospital. The team has been attracting big crowds to PIRTEK Stadium to watch each match and have been performing well. Next month we’ll officially see the NRMA Insurance Brisbane Broncos take to the field with the PIRTEK logo adorning the back of their jerseys in the NRL Telstra Premiership. Queensland has become an increasingly strong focus for PIRTEK in recent years and we’ve grown to having 31 centres in the Sunshine State now - which you’ll read more about this issue. Through the Broncos relationship and the naming rights to PIRTEK Stadium (Parramatta Stadium) - you’ll see the red, yellow and blue in primetime most weeks during the NRL season. March is also the month of what has grown to become Australia’s biggest single day fishing competition - the PIRTEK Fishing Challenge on March 23. We trust that you are all behind this with your customers, friends and local community to get them involved in raising much needed research funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. 2014 is the sixth year we’ve promoted this competition - organised by Michael Guest - and it is something that we’re increasingly proud of being involved with. It continues to grow in stature and the prize offerings that we have. This year there is a record $155,000 in prizes available. If that isn’t enough action for you, V8 Supercars begins its season at the Clipsal 500. This year sees Volvo join the fray with second year manufacturers, Nissan and Erebus Motorsport (AMG). We are once again the presenting partner of the PIRTEK Enduro Cup - and whilst that doesn’t begin until September, each event is critical in building a successful package for those endurance races. We trust you’ll enjoy the content of this issue of FLUID, which also includes a sporting calendar which you can easily print off covering the major sporting codes in Australia this year and the FIFA World Cup. Until next time,
Stephen Dutton Chief Executive Officer Pirtek Fluid Systems Pty Ltd

WANDERERS CHARGE TOWARD FINALS The PIRTEK-backed Western Sydney Wanderers are virtually guaranteed a place in the A-League Finals with a little over a handful of games remaining in the regular season. Basing themselves at PIRTEK Stadium, the second year Sydney Hyundai A-League Club has been putting in some solid performances during a busy summer period. They were nestled inside the top three as the regular season entered its final 10 games.
An initiative of PIRTEK to connect its sponsorship with the team and fans has been the Western Sydney Wander Goals - where every goal scored by the team during the Hyundai A-League season in 2013/2014 sees $1,000 donated to the Peter Duncan Neurosciences Ward at St Vincents Hospital in Sydney. At the time of publication, had reached the $22,000 mark - a tremendous outcome from the team and for St Vincents - with still plenty of opportunities remaining.

ASIA COMES TO THE PIRTEK-BACKED WANDERERS The PIRTEK-backed Western Sydney Wanderers are setting up for their first foray into international football at the end of February, when they will begin their campaign to become the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League Champions. Three games will be played at PIRTEK Stadium against teams from South Korea, Japan and China respectively and return legs against the teams WSW has drawn in Asia. It won’t be an easy task for the Wanderers, who come up against 2012 AFC Champions League victors, Ulsan Hyundai (Korea), Chinese FA Cup winners Guizhou Renhe and Japanese Club Kawasaki Frontale - who finished

third in the J-League last season. PIRTEK Stadium will open the Group H campaign against Ulsan Hyundai on February 26. The other two group games to be played in Sydney will take place on March 19 (Kawasaki Frontale) and to finish off the group on April 22 (Guizhou Renhe). The away matches for WSW will take place in China (March 12), Japan (April 1) and Korea (April 15). If they finish in the top two of the group, they will come up against the top two of Group F, which includes fellow A-League Club, the Central Coast Mariners, before heading into the quarter, semi and grand final stages.
Coverage of all matches will be shown live on Fox Sports. All at PIRTEK wish the Wanderers the best in this campaign. AFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FIXTURES February 26

PIRTEK EXTENDS LANDMARK KOMATSU DEAL PIRTEK was ecstatic to begin the new year with an announcement that it has reached a long-term agreement to extend one of its closest corporate partnerships - that being with Japanese earthmoving giant, Komatsu. Having worked with Komatsu’s Australian arm for nearly 10 years now, the relationship has been extended for a further five years, with an additional five year option. The partnership sees Pirtek provide field service support to Komatsu via its 95 strong national Service and Supply Centre network and 350+ mobile service fleet. Additionally, 14 Pirtek Service and Supply Centres that are strategically located around Australia are accredited and specifically geared to supply genuine Komatsu Engineered Standard hose assemblies. Under the terms of the landmark deal, Komatsu and its customers in New Zealand will soon be able to take advantage of the same support provided in Australia. Pirtek New Zealand will commence gearing up facilities to deliver the same service in New Zealand. “To extend our close partnership with Komatsu for the next 10 years for supply and service of their genuine hose assemblies in both the Australian and New Zealand market is an outstanding

achievement for Pirtek and a demonstration of the effectiveness of the original contract,” explained Stephen Dutton, Pirtek’s Chief Executive Officer. “Pirtek and Komatsu Australia have been working together for over 10 years and more formally via our partnership since 2009 and both organisations agreed that there was an opportunity to extend the contract whilst also expanding the scope of supply and service.” Komatsu, too, welcomed what they described as going from
a relationship to a genuine partnership. “We needed to take it from being a relationship to being a partnership that delivers quality, cost and delivery improvements with flexibility,” said Gerry Tessier - General Manager Procurement Projects, Komatsu Australia. “Through this announcement, we have achieved that.” Both businesses also have their head offices located in the strong Western Sydney corridor.

IT’S BACK - THE PIRTEK
Fishing Challenge
Circle Sunday March 23 in your diary - that’s the day of the 2014 PIRTEK Fishing Challenge. This year, the Challenge has grown to offer $155,000 in cash and prizes, all for a donation of $20, with all proceeds going to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. Inaugurated in 2009, the event is now Australia’s biggest single day Fishing competition and anglers of all ages and ability can get involved. The huge list of prizes includes a $33,000 Stacer boat - complete with a 75hp Evinrude outboard and trailer; there’s a Lowrance Electronics package up for grabs; $2,000 Berkely Fishing package and an $1,800 spending spree at BCF, among many other prizes. PIRTEK fishing ambassadors, former Australian rally Champion, Michael Guest and Australian Rugby League international, Andrew Ettingshausen are giving a lucky entrant and a mate the opportunity to fish the Challenge with them on Lake Macquarie. A special edition featuring the PIRTEK Fishing Challenge will be filmed for Escape with ET that the lucky winner will be part of. Target species will be issued for your state and fishing area on March 1, 2014 via the website and through email to registered participants. A cap and ‘brag sheet’ will be sent as part of the PIRTEK Fishing Challenge package you sign up for at point of registration. “Prostate cancer accounts for approximately 30% of cancers diagnosed each year in Australian men,” Guest said. “It has been estimated that around 120,000 Australian men are living with prostate cancer, and it is predicted that the number will increase to 267,000 by 2017. Which is why

PIRTEK, for the sixth year running, has partnered with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia to increase awareness of prostate cancer in the community and also raise much needed funds through the PIRTEK Fishing Challenge.” Guest welcomes all members of the PIRTEK family to get involved in the Fishing Challenge with their customers, friends and families to have a great day on the water come March 23 and raise money for an outstanding cause. SINGLETON CROWNED FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR
(from Left to Right) Gavin Murphy (Charters Towers - QLD Franchise of the Year), Peter Duncan (Executive Chairman), Yvette Waddington (Charters Towers - QLD Franchise of the Year), Stephen Dutton (PIRTEK CEO), Malcolm Willis (Singleton - NSW State & National Franchise of the Year), Mitch Furness (Port Hedland - WA/SA/NT Franchise of the Year), Tracey Willis (Singleton - NSW State & National Franchise of the Year), Lynn and Helen Rattray (North West Vic/Tas Franchise of the Year), Glenn Duncan (Executive Director)
PIRTEK Singleton has been awarded the National Franchise of the Year Awards at PIRTEK’s Gala Ceremony held at the Crowne Plaza, Hunter Valley. In the biggest Gala Ceremony in PIRTEK’s history, franchisees and representatives from around Australia were present for the celebration. Fittingly, the Malcolm and Tracey Willis-led PIRTEK Singleton is based in the Hunter Valley, midway between the Hunter Valley Vineyards and the Upper Hunter Mining and Equestrian district. Malcolm and Tracey were also
crowned as New South Wales Franchise of the Year. The Runner-Up in Franchise of the Year was awarded to the WA/SA/NT State Group Franchise of the Year Port Hedland from Western Australia. Other winners on the night were North West in the Victoria/Tasmania cluster and Charters Towers in Queensland. Our well deserved runners up were Milperra (NSW), Melbourne Central (Vic/Tas), Blackwater (Queensland) and Welshpool (WA/SA/NT). “The turn out for the Gala Prizegiving was the biggest that
we’ve ever seen and reflects the growth of PIRTEK over recent times,” said General Manager Sales and Marketing, Rod Chapman. “We had a fantastic venue at the Crowne Plaza in the Hunter Valley and many well deserved prize winners. “We congratulate all of our State winners and indeed all of our franchisees for their efforts throughout 2013, particularly Malcolm and Tracey Willis from Singleton, who win their first National Franchise of the Year Award.”

FRANCHISE FOCUS - DALBY, QLD The newest PIRTEK service and supply centre in Queensland is located in Dalby, around 210 kilometres west of Brisbane in the Darling Downs. The establishment of Dalby in late 2013 sees the Sunshine State now serviced by 31 PIRTEK locations. Dalby is an expansion to two franchises owned by PIRTEK Chinchilla franchisee John McCormack and managed by Rolly Heath. Originally starting out with his own engineering firm - McCormack Industries - in Chinchilla, John met Rolly through his son at the time where Rolly was looking to establish his own hydraulics business. The pair looked at a number of opportunities and with McCormack using PIRTEK product through his own company, the support and backup provided by owning a PIRTEK franchise was deemed to be the best option in terms of providing a full network of support. It wasn’t easy getting the business operational in Chinchilla. The business was established in late 2010, however due to the floods that devastated much of the state in January 2011 saw a delay of some months before they opening for business under the PIRTEK banner. Given the time lost in the cleanup following the floods and other associated challenges, finally they moved into their current PIRTEKbranded premises in September 2011.
10
FLUID MAGAZINE I www.pirtek.com.au
The business had expanded to the point where its two trucks were on the road constantly visiting surrounding towns and it became increasingly obvious there was a need for a professional PIRTEK-type service in the bigger town of Dalby. Although Dalby and Chinchilla are almost 100 kilometres apart, rather than creating challenges between running two operations, it has allowed both sites to increase efficiency and better service the customer base - whilst also bringing in new business.
John McCormack explained that the professionalism and support from PIRTEK’s franchise system and network is what stood out above all else. “It’s an unbelievably professional system - any time that our staff need advice on some part of the business or product - it’s available,” he said. “If we need to answer anything while looking to supply business, my guys will send a note to head office and it will come back with all the information that we need to best position us to get that business.
“There were an increasing number of businesses from Dalby calling us in Chinchilla looking for the range and level of service being offered by PIRTEK,” said Rolly. “There were other operators in the area, but not PIRTEK, so they would wait for us to come from Chinchilla or the guys from Toowoomba come to service them.
“The PIRTEK intranet system allows us to easily and effortlessly contact other franchisees in the network to help us out.
“Not only did that take more time, it added extra cost to the service being provided.
As is the PIRTEK way, McCormack and the team are heavily involved in local community activities - either as individuals or as a company.
“John and I felt it was the next step for our business to open in Dalby. “It is a bigger town than Chinchilla and whilst it crossed over with our franchise area, it was logical to set up a new, standalone centre there to better service the customer base.” The two operations now have three trucks and two utes - as well as a workshop and showroom across both Service Centres. In total, there are nine staff that work under McCormack as Managing Director and Heath as Centre Manager of both operations.
“You never feel as though you’re alone - our staff always feel as though they are part of something bigger in the PIRTEK family.”
They’ve recently sponsored the Queensland Polocross Championships, they work closely with the local show society and other community groups, as well as looking after a touch football team and other activities that staff may bring to the table. PIRTEK welcomes the community of Dalby as our newest region being serviced and congratulate John, Rolly and their staff on the decision to expand their commitment to the PIRTEK family.

am good mates with everyone now but they certainly keep testing me.” ‘You have your lane, your space, it’s what they give you, and I need to prove I own that.” The appreciation of Geddes skill, developed in the PIRTEK Athletic All Star Program, has been recognised by Bolt. “A few times I’ve seen him run, his technique is pretty good,” Bolt said. “He’s cool, we’ll talk. I’ll tend to watch him and see how he goes – but he’s really looked good so far.” Mills, too, passed on very positive feedback to Knowles.
ALL STAR BOLTS TO JAMAICA 19-year-old PIRTEK Athletic All Star, Jarrod Geddes has recently been given the chance of a lifetime - to trave to Jamaica and train as part of the Glen Mills squad that includes the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt. It is a rare opportunity that someone from outside Jamaica is invited to the Racers Track Club. It came about from a relationship between PIRTEK Athletic All Stars Manager, Hayden Knowles (who manages Geddes) and Bolt’s mentor, Norman Peart - the pair now co-managing the young Aussie. Peart was impressed with what he saw during a visit to Australia last year and the first opportunity was opening the door to training with Mills’ squad (referred to as a family) in Jamaica.
“When he ran that first time he was under the spotlight,” explained Knowles to the Sun-Herald. “And he turned some heads. Coach Glen Mills said ‘I really like your boy, I really like his stride, I like a few things and want him on Friday to go through a few different things’.
session because I felt as though I needed to. To command respect I needed to push myself and prove I’m not just some white boy having fun.”
“Jarrod has had to earn respect through his actions, you can’t talk yourself up with this crowd.”
Whilst he pinches himself when he looks at who is training alongside him - current Olympic and World Record Holder, Bolt, Yohan Blake, the Jamaican 4 x 100m squad...et al - he has to keep the eye on the prize.
Without doubt training under a man (Mills) that has won in excess of 100 medals in Olympic and World sprinting competition cannot hurt a sprinter like Geddes - who is still a very young sprinter at just 19.
“When I’m not looking at the superstars of track and field I think about what I’m doing here . . . you look around the track see these guys busting themselves, the intensity is incredible.
“He (Mills) has brought me from injuries, back from really bad times throughout the season to be the champion,” said Bolt. “I think he is the right person to watch [Geddes]. He’s very technical when it comes to training so he’ll get it done.”
“Then, when you sit back and think where you are it’s unbelievable. I
“In the first few days here I had to prove what I’m capable of on the track because it’s not all that a common occurrence to see a white kid running around here,” Geddes said to Daniel Lane in an exclusive Sun-Herald interview. “It wasn’t until I was pitted against one of Jamaica’s up-and-coming juniors, a 10.2 runner, that I proved myself. “I made sure I beat him,” said Geddes. “I probably went quicker than I normally would have in that FLUID MAGAZINE I www.pirtek.com.au

NRL SEASON PREVIEW - HIN Another NRL Telstra Premiership season is upon us with the competition becoming tighter
and tighter each year. With the Sydney Roosters having wrapped up the 2013 Title...the
footy is back! From PIRTEK’s point of view we’re heavily involved as ever with the
NATHAN HINDMARSH Nathan Hindmarsh is somewhat of a throwback to old school Rugby League players - loyalty personified, Hindmarsh played 330 games for the one club - the Parramatta Eels - for most of that time associated with PIRTEK. He was capped 23 times for Australia and represented New South Wales on some 17 occasions. He remains a tight knit member of the PIRTEK family and provides analysis on Rugby League to Fox Sports’ NRL coverage. Who will win? “I have no idea! The Warriors will be right up there, it will suit their style of play. “It is completely different to the Sevens, which I have played in the past. With the extra two players, it needs to be a defensive based approach and there will be a lot more body contact. “Guys like Benny Barba for the Broncos and anyone that is quick will shine in this format, but the big boys are important too - they need to run hard and you need some real grunt through the middle.” NRL - What are your predictions for season 2014? “I think we’re in for another exciting year. After a very successful cricket season in Australia I think everyone will be hanging out for some real top quality footy when it gets underway. “You’d expect Souths, the Roosters and Manly to be right in it. “For some reason I keep having the Bulldogs at the back of my mind as the team to watch. A couple of years ago they should have been right there, but injury and suspension cost them. “I think it would be hard to go past the Roosters again, but it will be a tight battle up front.”

FLUID MAGAZINE I www.pirtek.com.au
Who will get the Wooden Spoon? As long as it’s not Parramatta, I don’t care! Sorry to the St GeorgeIllawarra fans, but I reckon the Dragons could be heading for the spoon this year. They have been hanging around that area for a couple of years now.” State of Origin - Can New South Wales finally break the drought against Queensland this year? “Fingers crossed! “I think this might be the year. The Queensland side are getting another year older and the likes of Smith, Cronk and Slater aren’t any younger. “The Blues have some exciting young blokes coming through in the likes of Boyd Cordner and Aaron Woods - so it could be their year.” Explain what it means to Nathan Hindmarsh to be a PIRTEK Ambassador? “It’s great, the places I get to go, the people I get to meet and the things that I do with PIRTEK is always very interesting. “To be associated with a company like PIRTEK that is involved in a lot of charities and community work is something that I really like. I enjoy fishing and being part of the Challenge, even though I’m not
much of a fisherman! “If I can make a difference by being part of the PIRTEK family, then I’m happy to do it.”
“I think it would be hard to go past the Roosters again, but it will be a tight battle up front.”
NDY AND GORDY FACEOFF naming rights to PIRTEK Stadium in Parramatta and of course our new partnership with the
Brisbane Broncos. We caught up with PIRTEK’s pair of Rugby League experts - Nathan
Hindmarsh and the Raging Bull Gorden Tallis for their predictions of the season coming up…
GORDEN TALLIS Gorden Tallis - known as the Raging Bull - during his illustrious NRL career is a Queensland and Australian legend. Playing 214 first grade games, 160 of which were for the Brisbane Broncos, he played 13 games for Australia and 17 for the Maroons. He’s now an analyst on Fox Sports’ NRL coverage as well as being considered an authority on the game. Who will win? “I honestly don’t know. I think that is the exciting thing about this. If I knew who was going to win, then it wouldn’t be exciting! There are plenty of sides with great skillful players and it will reward them. The sides like the Warriors with great athleticism will be rewarded as well. I think it will be a great tournament and well worth watching.”
themselves up a bit with some new blood like Will Hopoate coming into their squad.
NRL - What are your predictions for season 2014? “The Roosters are as good a chance as anyone to go back to back this year. I’d expect Melbourne and South Sydney, pretty much all of the top four from last year to be very strong again.
State of Origin - Can New South Wales finally break the drought against Queensland this year?
“Manly with their young halves have a good chance too I think. “I expect the Dragons to be the big improvers with guys like Gareth Widdop this year. I also anticipate that Parramatta will drag
“But I don’t think you could go past the Roosters.” Who will get the Wooden Spoon? “I can’t really say to be honest, I’ve never been a big fan of picking the bottom side.”
(Quickly) “No!” (Laughs) “Of course they can get up this year. It has been a really good and tight battle over the last few years if you take the Series aside and look at every game individually there is nothing in it, it is incredibly tight between both teams. “I expect it to be the same again... and another Queensland Series win!”
/PIRTEK
Explain what it means to Gorden Tallis to be a PIRTEK Ambassador? “I absolutely love it! To be associated with a strong and powerful brand like PIRTEK that gets right behind Australian sport and the community is fantastic. To be part of what PIRTEK does in sport and associated with them is a lot of fun.”
“I expect the Dragons to be the big improvers this year.”

V8 SUPERCARS SEASON PRE Last year’s V8 Supercar Championship represented the most seismic shift in the category’s history - a full switch to brand new vehicles under the ‘Car of the Future’ moniker, the addition of two new manufacturers - Nissan and Erebus Motorsport; not to mention the inauguration of the PIRTEK Enduro Cup. In 2014, more change is afoot. Garry Rogers Motorsport has morphed into Volvo Polestar Racing and will welcome the Swedish brand back to the top level of Australian motorsport. Polestar is a well-respected team in European touring car racing and has won many races and Championships in various Series around the world. With full backing from Volvo Australia, they could well trump some surprises.
A big question is whether Nissan and the Erebus Mercedes squad can take a step forward and consistently deliver results.
Swedish driver Robert Dahlgren becomes the latest international to try his hand at the Aussie category. He will be the only non-Australasian in the Championship this year after the departure of Frenchman Alex Premat and German Maro Engel.
The downsized Erebus outfit welcomes ex-FPR driver Will Davison to the team. Davison will be up against it, not getting the opportunity to test the inconsistent Mercedes until the test day at Sydney Motorsport Park.
Up front, expect little to change the Red Bull Racing Australia team of defending Champion, Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes will continue to be the team to beat. Ford Performance Racing’s Pepsi Max Crew welcome young firebrand, Chaz Mostert. He’ll slot in alongside Mark Winterbottom - who, after claiming victory at Bathurst last year, is still chasing that elusive Championship win. The big question will be if the Holden Racing Team’s big off season manoeuvres can recapture the glory days. Bringing Adrian Burgess across from Red Bull to re-unite with James Courtney and Matt Nilsson from FPR shows a strong boost on the technical front, whilst the two Walkinshaw cars of Tim Slade (Supercheap Auto Commodore) and Nick Percat (in the James Rosenberg license formerly at Erebus) gives the four car factory Holden operation one of its strongest chances in some time. The FPR sister team - Jeld-Wen Racing is expected to take a step forward this year with Dunlop Series front-runner and former main gamer, Jack Perkins occupying the #18 seat, whilst Scott Pye has moved from Lucas Dumbrell

EVIEW - WHEN 4 BECOMES 5 Motorsport to be part of an all new Wilson Security lineup at Dick Johnson Racing alongside David Wall - who moves across from Brad Jones’ lineup. From an event perspective, there are changes in terms of the race formats this year. The Clipsal 500, Townsville 500 and Sydney 500 grouped together as ‘Super Street’ races will feature qualifying on Friday afternoon before two 125km races on Saturday and a 250km race on Sunday. There’s no change to the PIRTEK Enduro Cup, however, with the three endurance races maintaining their traditional format - the Sandown 500 will have its pair of qualifying races on the Saturday, the Bathurst 1000 its Friday Qualifying and Saturday Top 10 and the Gold Coast 600 its pair of 300km events. The PIRTEK Enduro Cup itself is set to grow even bigger in 2014. Getting underway to strong acclaim in 2013, the Championship-withina-Championship created a lot of interest, particularly among teams that were out of the Championship fight and they could chase some silverware of their own.
Defending Champion Craig Lowndes will be out to make it two from two, however his partner - Warren Luff - exits the Red Bull Racing Australia fold to be replaced by Bathurst winner, Steven Richards in what promises to be a formidable combination. The season will begin with the Open Test Day at Sydney Motorsport Park on February 15 before the Clipsal 500 over the weekend of February 27 to March 2. The season will be in operation until the Sydney 500 over the weekend of December 5-7.

PIRTEK MEETS THE BRONCOS FANS As the days wind down before the start of the 2014 NRL Telstra Premiership season, PIRTEK has been ramping up its newly formed alignment with the Brisbane Broncos. Since the announcement at the end of last year, PIRTEK had one of its first opportunities to connect with the fans at the Broncos Members’ Only Fan Day. PIRTEK WINS BATHURST! The PIRTEK South Adelaide-backed Contract Resources Racing team has taken a class victory in the HQ Holden support event to the LiquiMoly Bathurst 12 Hour. Crossing the line 10th outright, the team consisting of Matt Linscott (son of PIRTEK South Adelaide Centre Manager, Steve Linscott) and Ken Wright were the first two driver team home in the event, which was packed with cars, including V8 Supercar pilots Lee Holdsworth and Craig Baird.
