Thailand Wetland Site VS Urban Development In political and economic factors, Thamuang, Kanchanaburi, is planned to be part of Southern Economic Corridor project as Dawai Project is now constructing in Myanmar. The increasing of population and the development plans cause the shifting of the role of the city from agricultural area to residential area and also cause the extension of Thamuang city towards the river. In the other hand, the site, a newly occured wetland site locates within Maeklong flood plain, gets influences from 3 main water management infrastructures, Vajiralongkorn dam, Sinakharin dam and Maeklong dam.

Site Development Fifty years after the construction of Maeklong dam, changing of water level and soil sedimentation along the river create the new ecosystem in the river and around the riverbank. The conflict between urban development and the natural riverine ecosystem entailed on newly occurred wetland next to the upcoming city in Kanchanaburi. Thamuang city is under expanding towards the river dues to the growth of population from Southern Economic Corridor project. As the public openspace for the upcoming city is still inadequate, a newly sedimented land is considered as key area to serve public’s need.

Maeklong Riverine Biodiversity The ecosystem along the river is a tropical riverine ecosystem consists of freshwater wetland, marshland area, lotus lake, riparian forest and secondary forest which are growing on the newly occurred islands. The area is home to aquatic animal, water birds and many extremely rare species such as soft-shelled turtle and freshwater pearl. Changing of water level also changed the way local people live along the river, from doing agriculture to aquaculture. Failure to recognize the value of wetlandsm leads to too much agricultural and aquacultural encroachment. The situation is considered as a harm toward the ecosystem.

Site Selection The transformation of the area along Maeklong river and the urban growth in Thamuang city bring to problems of this project; disconnection between the river and the land dues to the infrastructure, trespassing and misusing on newly occurred wetlands which brings pollution to the water source, causing expansion of alien species along the river and Eutrophication. The site can be mainly devided to three key areas dues to their relationship with the neighbour communities, their ecological sensitivity and their richness on biodiversity; preserved area for community use, natural preserved area and key development area

A Living Connector The purpose of ‘A Living Connector’ is to connect the living factors; nature and human, properly. The project introduces people to the place where people and nature can live together by minimize the development only at the essential area, provide activities and spaces that match each landscape characters. The project can be devided to 3 major areas; the wetland center; the wetland park; and the community park. The site itself also acts as a buffer and transition space between the upcoming urban area and the complex natural core land.

Learning Through Discovering Different types of functions and routes are located on the site considering the typology, the significant of the plantation and the sensitivity of natural wildlife. The main funtional area for the community; plaza, market and recreational lawn are located on the high ground sedimentation area where the impact to the natural area and wild life is less and also to promote the connectivity between the site and the existing community. The routes which are vary in sizes, materials, elevation and display allow different amount of poeple per each area, encourage people to learn and discover the site while not disturb the nature.

Learning Through Discovering On the natural preserved area, the riverine island ecology, the elevated trail are located on the strong sediment area to control and minimize the foot print of the construction. Futhermore, the amount of the visitors can be limited by the size of the trail and the control node at the entrance. Different types of node points and hide observation areas, matching with types of biodiversity, are placed along the observation trail, encourage people to monitor wildlife species from suitable distance.

Makkasan : The Junction of Urban Life The urban public space will be activated by various functional spaces provided. Comercial and Residential zones are also introduced, therefore Makkasan can cover its financial needs by making profit from these zones. Former buildings and structures will be used in different functions. The loop circulation network is a combination of multi-level walkways connecting the zones all together. Various types of green area are placed according to needs; the flexible green spaces are implemented on the area which are highly used by people, while the lush types are located on the evironmental concerned area.

Urban Learning & Educational Zone : Wetland Park Grey water from Makkasan swamp will be channel through the exhibited constructed wetland park to improve the water quality and then will be keep in the retention pond as a recreation feature for the park and finally flow to the public canal.

Urban Ecology Zone : Urban Forest Trail The existing retention pond is concerned as the important part to keep the city runoff while it develops urban biodiversity within the area. The ecology learning center and the urban forest trail are introduced to limit the access of people on the environmental concern site.

Phanitaram Temple, The Service Landscape The site faces 5 major problems; lack of orientation to significant buildings; lack of community space; unsuitable environment for mediation dues to too much hardscape which accumulates heat during daytime; sea water up-rising during dry season from lack of inground water and detention area; erosion on the riverbank of Bangpakong river. The re-development on the masterplan aims to deal with these factors by using landscape as a tools to improve and serve the need by introducing specific service landscape to deal with natural environment issues, community issues and space heirachy issues.

Provide Flexible Detention Area Dealing with sea water uprising and lack of community space, unused hardscape area has been removed and transformed to the gabien wall material. Extended detention grassland can be used as a temporary reservior during wet season and can be transformed to a festive lawn during dry season. Riverbank Management Exisitng riverbank had been cut off from natural ecosystem while erosion also occured from the direction and strength of the river. Waterfront area design tends to use gabien wall to increase the efficiency of trapping sediment, prevent bank collapsing, bring the natural ecosystem back and promote waterfront area.

Site Introduction Sathorn is one of Bangkok’s significant CBD district, named after the Sathorn canal and road, main public transportation route of Bangkok city from the old time. The canal was first constructed by a chinese company in 1860 with the roads on its sides. Through times, the canal’s function was changed to a drainage channel for the water management while the core as a public urban space was devalued.

Strategies: Sathorn, Smart Eco Street The scope of the project is derived from finding the potential of the overall area of Sathorn Road, locating problems at Sathorn Road; from the radio junction to the Chao Phraya River. The main purpose of the project is to improve Sathorn Road to be a future eco road, using the Smart Eco Street concept integrates with consideration of innovative ecosystems.

Reconnecting and creating the system of circulation along the road, the bike lane and walkway are elevated from the road level for safety issue. Green area, sitting space and bus stop nodes are implemented along the route. Connect the private setback area to create continuity and support public activities and traffic.

Increasing the urban green spaces helps to increase the oxygen in the air and reduce pollution from the cars. The planting species are related to the site context and local climate to help the tree grows sustainably and permanently. Moreover, the site will act as a key space for wildlife species and biodiversity . Additionally, it also creates site identity and good scenery to the city.

Integrate Green Innovation for Urban Service

Canalscape Improvement

For urban service improvement, the project introduces the use of energy saving technology; integrating solar cell panel with the streetscape elements to produce lighting for the area during night time; implementing the map, photos and historical data on the application via communication equipments to direct the user along the site while encouraging outdoor learning and activities .

To improve the water management system, green area and innovation are implemented along the canal to help cleaning water quality. Separate the system of water management is also introduced on the site. Walkway with see-through fences and sightseeing spots are located along the canal to open more view from the roads and activate the public space.

Friends of the River Non-Profit Organization Friends of the River is a non-profit organization starts from group of citizens who realize the value of the river and the impact of the development; The 14km walkway along 2 sides of Chaopraya river which is claimed to be a new public space for Bangkok. The government had announced a mega project in Bangkok; The 14km promenade along the Chaopraya river, one of the major rivers of Thailand. Without round-the-clock study, the top-down project on the river causes impact on the way of life that is a valuable cultural heritage in the area.

My main contribution at the organization was to arrange exhibitions, site surveys and public participation activities in order to communicate with the society. Encouraging people to participate from all sectors to jointly define the development options development to the public.
