NOTE: Prime Bond must not be used in the sanitary sector, on marble or on natural stone of any kind. Neither must it be used in underground applications, on bituminous substrates, on substrates containing tar or on substrates that release plasticizers. Do not use Prime Bond on untreated (unprimed) metal substrates or for joints that have ongoing contact with moisture, such as concrete surfaces that are in contact with the soil.

Yield

One 10.5 ounce (310 ml) tube of Prime Bond is sufficient for about 42 running feet (13 meters) of joints measuring .2 inch x .2 inch (5 mm x 5 mm) or about 10 running feet (3 meters) of joints measuring .4 inch x .4 inch (10 mm x 10 mm).

Colors & Packaging

Prime Bond is available in 10.5 ounce (310 ml) tubes in white. The tubes are packaged 20 to a case. Additional colors and packaging sizes are available on a special-order basis.

Application Information

SUBSTRATE PRETREATMENT: The substrate must be dry, firm and free of dust and grease. At least one of the surfaces to be bonded must be absorbent or diffusion-permeable.

Before applying the adhesive, remove any cement slurry, mold release agents, coatings or impregnations. In renovation projects, all old adhesives, paint and loose materials must be fully removed.

Very porous, highly absorbing substrates, such as porous concrete, should be pretreated with diluted adhesive. We recommend a water-to-adhesive ratio of between 1:3 and 1:4 for any primer application.

To avoid contamination, we recommend masking the joint edges with adhesive tape before applying Prime Bond.

JOINT DIMENSIONS: The thickness of the adhesive layer should be at least ⅛ inch (3 mm), and should not exceed ⅓ inch (8 mm).

Technical Data Sheet – PRIME BOND – Revised 27 February 2015 – Page 2 of 5
Technical Data Sheet – PRIME BOND – Revised 2 February 2023

BONDING: Bonding takes place immediately after straight or curved application of the adhesive using a suitable manual, battery-powered or pneumatic caulking gun. When bonding takes place after a skin has formed, the surfaces to be bonded must be displaced relative to each other so as to break the skin. Bonding will normally be completed after a maximum of 15 minutes following application of the adhesive. Corrections are still possible after a short period of time.

Depending on the bond thickness, heavyweight parts may require additional securing until the initial strength is reached, normally in about 24 hours.

If adhesive tape is used, it can be removed immediately after bonding.

Important Information

Prime Bond must be protected from leaching, such as that caused by condensed moisture or rainwater, until a solid skin has formed. Fresh product may be removed with a damp cloth. Clean tools with water immediately after use. Cured product must be removed mechanically. Remaining residues may be softened with water and then wiped off.

If applied outdoors, the joint must be protected from driving rain and constant exposure to moisture.

The product cures by means of desiccation. High humidity, low temperature and joint depth above .6 inches (15 mm) can delay skin formation and curing significantly. During drying, the color will slightly change.

The product is compatible with most paint systems. Owing to the large number of different coating systems on the market, we nevertheless recommend you conduct your own tests concerning compatibility and adhesion prior to application.

Joints subject to expansion must not be painted over, since most paint systems will crack due to their lower elasticity compared to the sealant. If joints with low movement are painted over, the sealant must be allowed to dry for at least seven days before painting.

The function of the product can be guaranteed only if the product has been correctly applied in accordance with the technical recommendations given in this data sheet and in related standards. Sealant application in situations with strongly fluctuating temperatures that may cause premature stressing of the sealant should be avoided.

NOTE: The rate of curing depends on temperature, humidity and substrate absorbency. The data given above refer to tests conducted under standard conditions (73°F / 50% relative humidity). Under these conditions, a .4 inch x .4 inch (10 mm x 10 mm) joint will cure in approximately 14 days (with at least one substrate being absorbent). Low temperature, high humidity and joint depth above 9⁄16 inches (15 mm) will retard skin formation and curing significantly.

Data given were determined shortly after production and may vary slightly with increasing age of product and for different colors. Data are not meant for specifications purposes.

For safety data, see Safety Data Sheet. Take all preventive measures specified in the Safety Data Sheet and in the hazard markings to prevent accidents and protect health.

Information provided in this data sheet is based on the current state of knowledge. This does not exempt purchasers from carrying out their own careful inspections of incoming goods in individual cases. We reserve the right to make changes to the product data in the course of technical progress or due to operationally-related further development. Owing to factors beyond our control during application, recommendations given in this data sheet require tests and experiments by customers. Our recommendations do not exempt customers from the obligation to check any infringements of third-party rights themselves and eliminate them if necessary. The suggestions made herein for product use are not equivalent to a warranty of its suitability for the recommended purpose.
