MESSAGE from the PRESIDENT Pitt Community College is certainly on a roll, and I invite you to become part of the multiple successes we have experienced by enrolling, volunteering, or contributing in other ways to this significant education and training momentum for Pitt County and eastern North Carolina. The strong passage of the $19.9 million voter referendum for the Science Building and Law Enforcement Training Center in November 2013 was due to widespread efforts by many people, including the Board of Trustees and employees. The bond success has led to the recent announcement of a $2 million US Department of Commerce grant to expand the plans for the facility to include short-term industry training along with instruction in biotechnology, biology, physics and other STEM areas. Among the many other significant advances we are seeing: Dr. G. Dennis Massey, President
> Impending completion of a major addition to the Craig Goess Student Center, including a Bookstore, Career Center, Computer Lab, and Student Lounge. > Development of a Farmville Center for increased coursework and training. > Stronger partnerships with Pitt County Schools, including planning for an Early College High School program. > An improved articulation agreement with UNC/East Carolina University that eases transfer for higher degrees for students.
The Board of Trustees approved a 2014-17 Strategic Plan with measurable objectives and broad campus support. We are working on making the goals a reality, particularly in student success and workforce development. Most importantly, the number of students graduated and credentials earned continues to increase steadily, and a new Completion by Design initiative dedicates effort even more aggressively to student academic success. I thank you for your interest in and commitment to Pitt Community College as we continue to respond proactively to the educational and workforce challenges of our region.

PCC’s BOND REFERENDUM
t o main campus in Winterville. Students in the program currently train at the PCC Greenville Center on Memorial Drive and in a warehouse behind that building. the
In July 2013, PCC Trustees convened a special meeting and voted unanimously for the college to pursue a $19.9 million bond referendum in November to build a new science building and move law enforcement training services closer to the main campus. The request went before the Pitt County Board of Commissioners on August 19, 2013 and was approved to be placed on the November 5th ballot for the Pitt County volters to decide. Throughout the next few months, PCC administrators and representatives carried out an awareness campaign to explain to the community the need for bond funding in order to provide more instructional space on campus. Those efforts paid off when a majority of Pitt County voters (62.4 percent) voted to support bond funding that will allow the college to construct a 70,000-squarefoot science building and move law enforcement training closer to the main campus.
be a learning experience for college administrators as well. “We learned a lot in this campaign on how we can improve, on what we can do better, and we’re going to work to be an improving institution,” he said. Massey pledged that PCC would be a good steward of the funding voters approved on election day. “We will be very responsible with this funding,” he said. “We will do what we said we are going to do. We’re going to move forward with planning construction of the science building and moving our law enforcement training center.” Of the $19.9 million, Massey said $18 million would go toward the science building, which will provide a home for the college’s biotechnology program and much-needed space for a variety of science and technology courses.
“We worked hard, we communicated—as the Pitt County Commissioners asked us to—to a broad cross section of voters, and they supported us … 62 percent,” said PCC President G. Dennis Massey. “I think it’s a great endorsement!”
PCC is currently utilizing the county-owned Tech Enterprise Center of Eastern North Carolina on Greene Street in Greenville for biotech training. It was supposed to be a short-term arrangement when the deal was made 10 years ago.
Massey noted that the awareness campaign to provide bond referendum details to the community turned out to

2014 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
In 2012, the college trained more than 5,000 public safety officers through its Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) programs and an array of in-service programming for various law enforcement agencies, such as the N.C. Highway Patrol, Greenville Police Department and Pitt County Sheriff’s Office. The day after the bond referendum passed, a group of Pitt Community College students and employees stood alongside Highway 11 to express their appreciation to Pitt County voters. Giving a thumbs up to passing motorists and waving signs that expressed their gratitude for the support shown to their college, the students and employees made the typical morning commute a little more festive. “Our voters are what we’re about,” explained Massey. “Pitt Community College is based on the people, and we needed the people’s endorsement. They gave it to us; we need to thank them, and we showed that this morning and will continue to show that.”

2014 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
MESSAGE from the DIRECTOR During the 2013-14 college year, the Pitt Community College Foundation provided significant support for the college by developing opportunities and partnerships to support the mission of the college. The PCC Foundation Board members served as ambassadors and advocates for the college’s programs and for the 2013 $19.9 million bond referendum which will provide funds for the construction of science classroom and lab facilities and law enforcement training facilities. During the 2013-14 fiscal year, the PCC Foundation contributed $608,549.70 to the college for student scholarships, mini grants, special educational events, employee professional development, and program support. This represents a 35% increase from the previous year. While the PCC Foundation Board has been diligent in its strategic financial support for the college, it has also established new investment management plans to develop more resources for the future. Susan Q. Nobles Much of the PCC Executive Director, Foundation’s success during PCC Foundation the 2013-14 as well as the future can be attributed to the outstanding leadership and support of its board of directors, the continued support of its many donors, and over 180 volunteers who provide their service for the foundation’s events and activities. We sincerely appreciate their commitments as we work together to enhance the success of our students.
