ON THE COVER The cover photo features law enforcement officers from the various departments in our community. From left to right - Pitt County Sheriff's Office Deputy Marcia Perkins; Pitt County Sheriff's Office Detention Officer Ginger Hardee; Greenville PD Officer Sergio Munguia; Pitt County Sheriff's Office Deputy Katie Barnes; PCC Police Sergeant Tyrone Turnage; and NC Highway Patrol State Trooper Jason Locklear. The Law Enforcement Division at Pitt Community College has established itself as one of the most diverse training facilities in North Carolina with a goal to proactively meet the needs of the Criminal Justice community. Our programs consist of 3 main areas: Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET), Detention Officer Certification, and In-Service Training. The BLET Academy is held 4 times a year with 2 day academies and 2 night academies. Our BLET program has an excellent reputation and produces some of the highest State Exam scores in the region. Our students are required to pass with an 80% test score rather than the state mandated 70%. Students are also expected to achieve a 65% or better on their final PT assessment to graduate, to participate in 3 or more community service events, and to complete "additional" classes outside of the required courses by Training and Standards. We strive to give our students the best opportunities of learning available to them, whether it is through our program or the partnerships we have created with ECU and the PCC Criminal Justice 2-year curriculum program. The Detention Officer Certification is a 5-week course offered 2 to 3 times a year. It is a great opportunity for those interested in criminal justice to quickly enter the workforce with a government job that includes a salary and benefits. Our Law Enforcement In-Service Training offers both traditional and online classes to professionals locally and state-wide. We strive to not only offer the required continuing education classes, but to offer classes that will improve job performance, management skills, leadership, and knowledge. We are known as a One-Stop-Center where professionals can get needed recertifications and also learn valuable skills that allow for career advancement. For more information on our law enforcement programs, please contact Wendy Wooten at (252) 493-7572 or visit www.pccpublicsafety.com.

HUMAN RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT (HRD) It is important to know exactly what employers look for when hiring full-time employees. The Human Resources Development (HRD) program is designed to help you gain the necessary skills to find employment or improve your current work situation. The biggest dilemma people find when unemployed is knowing what to do first. Not only can we help you with the steps necessary to find a job, we will also teach you how to articulate your value, highlight your skills, and present yourself effectively in an interview. A fee waiver is available if you meet one of four criteria: > Are unemployed > Have received notification of pending layoff > Are working and are eligible for federal earned income tax credit > Are working and earning wages at or below two hundred percent (200%) of the federal poverty guidelines For more Information contact Mary Higgs (252) 493-7576 or Instructor Holly M. Sweat at (252) 493-7345.

Since we live in a world where we are overwhelmed with content, communicating information in a way that is memorable to others is more important today than ever before. During this seminar we invite you to join us as we examine public speaking in everyday life. We will discuss how public speaking can benefit your business. We will explore the tricks to making your time speaking enjoyable, fearless, and creative. You will come away with either a great elevator speech or the beginning of a presentation. Remember the term elevator pitch refers to a short, clear statement that could be made in about the time it takes for an elevator ride. Next time someone asks, “What do you do?” or, “Tell me about your business.” You will give them such a great intro to your business that they will want to know more. Presenter: Marilyn Shannon 3 hours. FREE.
Too often we hear that “luck” is the main reason a business fails or succeeds. This could not be further from the truth as successful businesses share common traits and luck is not one of them. After researching hundreds of small businesses in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia for the past nine years, the presenter created this seminar which reveals common traits that successful small businesses possess. Small businesses that possess these traits have shown growth and produced handsome profits for their owners. This seminar is designed for the individual thinking of opening a new business as well as existing entrepreneurs who seek the inside secrets of how to make their business better. Opening and operating a small business involves a huge investment of time, talent and resources. Insure the success of your business and your personal success by planning to attend this informative and enlightening seminar. Presenter: Bob Moore. 3 hours. FREE.
