The
Pittsburgh Promise
A Big Idea, a Remarkable Community
Pittsburgh was built by people who dared to dream big dreams and who were willing to work extremely hard to reach them. They believed that if Pittsburgh prospered, they too would prosper. Today, with similar resolve, we believe that Pittsburgh’s future is still full of promise. Today, with similar devotion, we are able to dream big dreams for our region, our city, our neighborhoods, our schools, our families, and our children.
It’s a promise that requires a commitment of $250 million. Remarkably, in 2007 UPMC issued a challenge grant: they committed to give $1.00 for every $1.50 that anyone else gives. Since then, The Promise has raised $60 million toward the UPMC challenge, and UPMC has provided its match of $40 million. We are incredibly grateful and profoundly humbled by the trust of our community, and by the vision of our friends.
This is the heartbeat of The Pittsburgh Promise.
Of course, in order to keep The Promise we have made and bring the results that are required, we must meet our goal and raise the final $90 million that will then be matched by another $60 million from UPMC.
In order to ensure that the region’s heart keeps a strong and healthy beat for generations to come, we made a promise: •We will transform the quality of our public schools. •We will provide urban youth with scholarships to attend college or trade school. •We will infuse the region’s workforce with young, energetic, and diverse talent.

$ The Pittsburgh Promise is improving the life prospects of urban youth and families since, even in a tough economy, those with higher education find jobs more quickly, earn more, and are able to advance further.
The Pittsburgh Promise is preparing our region’s next generation of workers since two-thirds of the jobs created in the United States require some form of education beyond high school.
BILLION
The Pittsburgh Promise is growing the region’s economy since, according to CEO’s For Cities, if we grow Pittsburgh’s collegeeducated citizenry by one percentage point, then we grow the region’s economy by over $1.5 billion.
