ome classic, low tech, camping & traveling games to keep you busy on the road, in the sun or after dinner. One of the joys of being away from home and out in the wilderness is finding ways to amuse yourself that don’t involve electronics. if you’re an eight year old of course, this can easily be achieved by hitting things with a stick or finding some

e’re always on the lookout for more quirky and fabulous places to stay. the problem is, we keep finding them! there are so many inventive, brilliant people coming up with all sorts of great ideas and it makes it very hard to do what we’re about to do here, which is put them into categories. We’ve got loads of different groupings on the site like “Family Friendly”, “Blow the Budget” or “Best for llamas” (only a couple of places in that last one). to start you off, here is just one way of cutting our collection cake into five chunky slices.

- the group of players sits in a circle with their eyes closed and a volunteer walks around the outside selecting a ‘murderer’ with one tap on the shoulder and a ‘detective’ with two taps. Once both are selected the detective makes himself known but the murderer, unless they’re really very bad at Wink murder indeed, does not. the murderer then starts killing people with their deadly wink and the people killed make a big show of being bowled over by this basilisklike eye contact. it is the detective’s job to keep an eye on everyone, work out who is doing the killing and arrest them!

- is for the more agile and lively, but probably not for places with white upholstery and perhaps best played outdoors. the rules are simple. choose a hunter, everyone else is a monkey. the ground is a swamp and must not be touched by either hunter or monkeys, who will be drowned if they do so! everything else that is not the ground is a ‘log’ in the swamp. When the chase begins (the traditional signal is the blowing of a giant alpenhorn) the hunter must try to catch the monkeys. Rules vary from jungle to jungle. if a monkey is caught, he becomes a hunter, or is simply ‘out’. harsher versions turn caught monkeys into logs. decide amongst yourselves beforehand to avoid unnecessary treading on people.

First, there’s the fact that every season brings its own potential and its unique feel, from misty mornings in early spring to wood-fired winter nights. Then there’s the amazing variety of the types of adventure. Of course

a big summer festival.
The reality of course, is that there IS that kind of infinite diversity of adventure down here on the ground and happily, it’s much more accessible. The art of detecting it is a fine one though, as it can come in so many forms.
Adventure doesn’t have to be dangerous, or even energetic. It can be something tiny that you’ve never seen, a new perspective or a new skill. It can be as simple as sunset or as complex as willow weaving. As we chart the heavenly places on our site, we see this huge spectrum of activities, festivals, events and hobbies wherever we are and whenever we’re there. So start making your own star chart of adventure. Take

capture the feel of the place through its food (hence the napkin), its fun and its folk. This last one is the most important, especially when it comes to the hosts, because we like to know that you’ll enjoy staying at our places and the best way to do that is to work with people who share our ethos, who love what they do and want you to love it too. Just as we believe in being helpful and friendly when you book, we want to work with people who are like that when you stay. So if you fancy striking out to a point just off the map, where you might find something special and somewhere magical, then come and join us as we stalk doggedly along on the trail of the amazing. One day, we might even find that elephant and give him his gun back.

- a common variation on the classic “it” or “tag”, known by many names and played in various ways. establish a base and pick one player to guard it. all other players must hide while the guard counts to 40. When the guard has finished counting, they shout, “coming ready or not” and proceed to search for the other players. the other players have to get back to the base without being caught. the guard can only catch them whilst touching the base and with the other player in sight. the guard calls, “40 40 i see you!” and the caught player must then stay by the base. if a player gets to the base without being seen they can release all previously caught players and the game begins again. the game is generally over when everyone gets hungry. it involves lots of sneaking around, followed by mad dashes back to the base and people throwing themselves behind things to avoid being seen by the guard. to make the job of the players that bit harder, tether an excitable beagle, that barks the moment it sees anyone at all, to the base.

- traditionally played with proverbs, this game can be modernised using song lyrics, famous quotes or any other recognisable string of words. One player leaves the room. the others agree on a phrase. When the player re-enters the room, he or she must ask questions of the conspirators. the first person asked must use the first word of the secret phrase in their answer. the second person asked (it can be a different question of course) must use the second word. the guesser can attempt to guess the phrase as soon as they like and you might consider a points system for guessing early. agreement on the nature of the questions asked is a “house-rules” issue. it might be tricky to conceal the first word of certain phrases in the answer to, “What is your name?”

- One for the slightly more physicallyminded game player and probably for larger groups, although it might just make an acceptable alternative to yoga. a cereal box is placed in the centre of the room. each player takes turns to pick it up using only their teeth and with only their feet touching the ground. When every player has successfully lifted the cardboard (off-ground control of the object must be demonstrated) a strip is torn off the top, lowering the challenge. When a player fails to pick up the box he is out. Repeat until all players are eliminated, or in traction.

- a two player card game based on the usual whist principles. deal 12 cards face down, 12 face up (on top of each other, to save space) to each player, leaving two for each person’s hand. the non-dealer (or the person with the longest hair, biggest hat, most pets etc) chooses a suit to be trumps, based on the strength of the visible cards. the player who chose trumps leads, the opponent follows suit and the first trick is won. Players must always follow suit (including the two cards in their hand) and must turn over revealed cards when the one on top is played. the winner of the previous trick continues to lead until all cards are played. the two hand cards can be played at any time and you don’t pick up any more. they simply serve to sow a little doubt into your opponent’s mind. continue playing until all tricks are won. count up the tricks won and score a point for each one over 13. so a player who won 15 tricks scores two. the game is usually won by the luckiest person, who finds loads of trumps in the second layer of cards. they should on no account be allowed to forget that they fluked it and are probably cheating too.
